Did you have the permission of the Base/Shipyard? As I understood some naval facilities were off limits for photography because they came within the scope of 'the act' (i.e were 'restricted' or secret areas)?

Sfan00 IMG 11:44, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bae, which owns the yard, did allow photography in the areas I have photographed. Nothing in those photographs is in a classified or secret area. Steel city ady 13:21, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

VT group plc own the building, not Bae, my mistake. Steel city ady 20:17, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Did you have permission of the vessel/base concerned? Sfan00 IMG 12:05, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HMNB Portsmouth did allow permission for photography during the International Festival Of the Sea (IFOR) celebrations. All precautions were taken to ensure no classified or secret areas were photographed. Steel city ady 13:21, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images queried earlier[edit]

OK have added the clarifcations you made to the image summary. You might want to add simmilar clarifcations to other simmilar photos you may have uploaded.

Will do. Can tell I'm new to adding pictures, can't you? :-) Steel city ady 14:02, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BTW If you are happy with these being under a 'free' licence, I strongly suggest you upload them to Wikimedia Commons :) Sfan00 IMG 13:59, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How do I do that? Sounds like the way forward. Steel city ady 14:02, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Try asking politely on Wikimedia Commons or if you have IRC #Wikimedia-commons on freenode :) ShakespeareFan00 21:43, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added an image for RFA Fort Rosalie A385 - the larer version doesn't seem to come up for people not logged in with id's - the message says an image isn't uploaded, but you can see the smaller version on the page itself. Any suggestions? Steel city ady 10:18, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added clarification on this image that permission was granted for photography and no classified locations or details were compromised by the photography. Steel city ady 14:15, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome[edit]

Welcome to WP:Ships! I particularly enjoy the pictures you are adding to Royal Navy ships articles. Maralia 04:41, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I am doing my best to update the images for entries where there are none, as well as adding to the various histories and details from people I have spoken to at the various bases and entries on the royal navy website. Naturally, citing sources for the word-of-mouth firsthand material will be hard. Steel city ady 17:09, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can I ask if you have written documented permission to take this photo? Normally one of the conditions of entry to tours of the dockyard is a strict no cameras rule and photography is forbidden. Justin talk 13:42, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The photograph was taken during the navy Days open day 2006 and permission was granted for photographs in that area. All areas where photography was disallowed was either signposted or restricted to public access. Steel city ady (talk) 17:59, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery images[edit]

Please upload your images to wikimedia commons, as this way the images can be used more easily and on other articles. Please also note the wikipedia policy on image galleries, WP:NOTREPOSITORY, and the discussion here. Thank you. Jhbuk (talk) 13:08, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery images were put up in a hurried manner without the specific descriptive elements added. I have added those descriptions. Images are added for illustrative purposes, rather than for picture sake. I hope this helps. Steel city ady (talk) 17:19, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In order for pictures to be encyclopaedic they need to add value to an article rather than simply look pretty. A photo of Daring's launch is certainly encyclopaedic, but not one of her name plate or badge. In reviewing the gallery you added, I found nothing of encyclopaedic value, and deleted the gallery (see WP:NOTREPOSITORY). Your photo of the boat might be considered encyclopaedic in Type 45 destroyer, but probably not in this article. The pictures of the ship itself are superfluous to those already in the article. Yours, Shem (talk) 12:19, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can be convinced that nameplates are non-encyclopedic, howeever you also deleted the images on the HMS Ocean page which highlight functional, ship-specific features such as the aft loading door, and also highlighted the assault craft and materiel carried by the ship, surely encyclopedic?
