Hi SpoolWhippets. Those maps you added to Arnold Potts are excellent additions. I'm not sure if you are looking for any other projects, but if you are there are many battle articles on Wikipedia that need maps. I have written a few articles about Australian battles in the Bougainville campaign: Battle of Slater's Knoll, Battle of Pearl Ridge, Battle of Hongorai River, Battle of Tsimba Ridge, and Battle of Porton Plantation. All of these would be greatly improved with maps, however, I am terrible at map drawing (my worst subject at Duntroon). If you were able to make some up and add them to those articles, it would be a great addition. No pressure, though, of course. The Potts article is coming along quite nicely, by the way. Yes, I'd be happy to do some location maps. I am planning to add a Boug. map to Potts, so once its done I can use that as a base for others. Hi again. A couple of refs that might be useful for the maps are as follows (they are all from the Official History, which can be found [1]) (incidentally chapters 8 and 9 both mention Potts a couple of times which might help you with Bougainville if you haven't already looked there):

Long 1963, p. 116 (chapter 6) - Pearl Ridge
Long 1963, p. 123 & 125 (chapter 6) - Tsimba Ridge
Long 1963, p. 163 (chapter 7) - Slater's Knoll
Long 1963, p. 180 & 190 (chapter 8) - Hongorai
Long 1963, p. 207 (chapter 8) - Porton Plantation
I think also that Maitland, Gordon. (1999). The Second World War and its Australian Army Battle Honours also has a general map showing the main Australian engagements in Bougainville, but I don't have the source to hand at the moment.

I have just had a look at the Slater's Knoll map as an example. How do you feel about omitting the arrows? As an interested but not trained reader of mil. history, I always feel the text tells me what happened and the map is there to locate the multitude of place names that crop up. The arrows to me are superfluous. You might feel they are essential, and as you are the author I would be keen to tailor it to what you'd like.

I'm a graphic designer, so I have access to professional software which helps :) I have been using Adobe Fireworks, which is specifically for producing good looking web graphics in jpeg or png format. But it seems WP likes where possible to have files in SVG format that are editable. I am looking into the best way to make SVGs but my first efforts have been pretty bad. Might stick with Fireworks for now. BTW I am aiming where possible to produce a map that is useful and legible at the small size in the article (eg rotating the kokoda trail to get it running down the page). I'll add it to my worklist! I have been getting some grief from Tryphon☂ about sourcing for my maps. I would have thought a map entirely drawn by me would be OK for me to put in WikiCommons as Pub Domain, but he is requiring me to declare all my sources for the "data set" used. I took a look at the map in question and I'd have thought it was cited well enough, but to be honest I'm not up on the Commons policy, sorry. Hopefully Tryphon will agree that you've cited it well enough and remove the tag. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]
Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.
On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.
For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

G'day, I'm currently doing a bit of work on Battle of Wareo and think that a map would greatly improve it. The maps you created to go with some of my Bougainville campaign articles were excellent, so I was wondering if you were interested in taking on another project. I have also done some work on Battle of Sattelberg, which could be improved with a purpose drawn map. There is a map in Dexter's chapter on the Wareo-Gusika battle on p. 660, which might help if you are keen: [2]. If you are too busy, or not interested, no worries. Hi, mate, sorry to badger you, but I didn't get any takers on the Wareo/Huon Peninsula map/s request at the Graphics Lab and the request has now been archived due to inactivity. If you are free/keen I'd greatly appreciate you taking a look. I also have another request in at the Graphics Lab, for a map detailing the 2/18th Battalion's ambush against the Japanese on 25 January at the Nithsdale estate in Malaya (and or its dispositions during the fighting in Singapore). The request can be found here: Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Map workshop#Malayan and Singapore campaigns 1941-42. It might take your fancy more than the Wareo map request. The 2/18th Battalion article is currently at Milhist A-class review and I'd like to take it to FA soon, and one of the points raised in the ACR so far is the need for a map. Hi Rupert. As of 1 July I am self-employed, so sitting at the home computer late into the evening is losing it's novelty value! But I do love doing the maps, so I will have a crack at Wareo to start. Would it be OK if when the maps are created I send them to you for upload? If I recreated the Dexter map in colour (which will make the Bns more distinct) and added an inset map showing location on Huon Pen - would that be good for both Battle of Wareo and Battle of Sattelberg? Hi, my understanding is that as Dexter was published in 1961, the map would still be copyrighted in the US under the URAA ruling (I believe). It has a couple of maps, and while they are ok in terms of licencing, they are not of any great quality. If possible, could it be redone to a similar standard to the ones you made for the Bougainville campaign? It is currently being used to display the Mediterranean, North African and Middle East theatres, to show the general vicinity where the Australian Army fought its campaigns during 1941. Second map needs to have troop movements from 1796 added. Third map needs troop movements from 1799-1800 added. Fourth map needs to show battles from those 2 campaigns added. I think they can all be built on the same map basis. creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. I was hoping that you might be able to add a couple of locations, specifically Dumpu, Saidor, Bogadjim, Madang in New Guinea. Additionally, on New Britain would it be possible to add: Arawe, Cape Hoskins, Jacquinot Bay. If these could be added, I would look to use it in various articles including Battle of Madang and several child articles in the New Britain campaign. 2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting[edit]
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. "Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Thanks for those changes, Chris. Just want to clarify one thing, though. I notice Koiari has been removed now and replaced with Navoi. Is this an alternative place name, or a different village? I only ask as the map is currently being used in Raid on Koiari to show the location of Koiari. Any way, once again thank you for your fantastic map work.
