Sakshama

please unprotect the page Sakshama, when wikipedia is having articles for techfest, techniche and other technical fetivals. then why not a article for sakshama, a technical festival which was started from a small town of india in the year 2007 and now it is going to celebrate it's third version and it has been said as no #1 technical festival of north india. so i want to write a page for it please unprotect it. you can find more at http://sakshama.org or you can find the same communities on orkut and other social web Aashish K Mahaswary (talk) 15:46, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

GIMP

Thanks, I've got Inkscape, but I don't fully understand that either. One reason I'm reluctant to change things like maps is that I tend to default to really basic software. I might give Gimp a go next time out. Thanks again for the colour edits, jimfbleak (talk) 18:08, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Swallow-tailed Gull

Updated DYK query On 15 September, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Swallow-tailed Gull, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Amazon Video-Clip

Have created an video-clip using 'Downloadhelper', managed to convert it to an MPEG, rotated part of it and then saved the whole as an .ogg file. Unfortunately tried to upload it but got a bit worried about the licenses and as it's not the same as the original on flickr I thought it might be easier if I sent it to you first and let you sort that out. Can you give me an email address? Aviceda talk 05:54, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

I think it would be best to upload the full length original stream in ogg format to commons first, so the original is on the records. Then, upload the edited and rotated form with the same name, which will "go over" the unmodified version. As far as I understand, its license on flickr permits modification, so it is ok to upload your modified version. Because you are worried, I have asked the at copyright questions help desk Wikipedia:Media copyright questions#Talking parrot video on flickr and you can see how the discussion goes. Snowman (talk) 08:13, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Might be easier for me to send it to you as an email attachment. Aviceda talk 10:06, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
I am not sure about that, because someone has answered your copyright question at the help desk. Snowman (talk) 14:24, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi Snowman, Amazon clip uploaded

hopefully I've complied with the copyright, unfortunately I can't hear the sound but that does happen from time-to-time with my linux setup, please let me know if you can hear it OK and there is no other issues. (I've left a message on the Wikipedia:Media copyright questions#Talking parrot video on flickr informing of my success) Aviceda talk 08:07, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Great. The sound works fine with Ubuntu linux. Is there a way of choosing the frame that is shown as a static image on the page before the video is played? Is there a way to remove the black margins at either side of the film? Snowman (talk) 08:59, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
If you experiment with the thumb code in the markup, thumbtime=n you might be able to fix it (note change that I've just made to previous post), unfortunately I can't seem to nail it down to well (ie change thumb to thumbtime=1) let me know how you go! 09:26, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
I have tried all the whole numbers up to 40 (in a grid of 10 at a time) and I think that you have got one of the best ones. Snowman (talk) 09:45, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
I could probably have 'cropped' the black-lines, but remember I rotated a rectangle, so that would have changed the image from 'landscape' to 'portrait', I wish I could find out more about 'thumbtime', there seems to be very little out there on the 'net....Aviceda talk 09:55, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
I think that it would be worthwhile to upload the original unedited stream in ogg format, so that the original is on record, and perhaps, in the future, it might be reedited with new software. The image on flickr could vanish, if the owner deleted it. For static images, I always upload the original flickr work in its original form, and then upload modified versions, which could be with the same name or a different name. There is no problems with showing where the modified version came from then. Snowman (talk) 11:37, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Health and education

I've created a potential education section here for the "History of Coventry" article. I'll see what I can add on the topic of health-care and hospitals in due course, but in any case, your comments and input would be most welcome. Perhaps I should post a similar note on the Project talk page and bring in a wider range of views? --Red Sunset 22:30, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Are any more illustrations needed? Snowman (talk) 22:01, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
If the original private house that was converted to the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital in 1838 still exists, that would make a good addition – I've an idea I've seen the address somewhere and will let you know what it is. Perhaps one of the hospital on Stoney Stanton Rd in later years in contrast to the University Hospital might be useful also, but otherwise I don't see that others would serve any real purpose. Cheers :) --Red Sunset 22:17, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
The foundations of the original St Mary's Church have been unearthed and are on permanent view (I think that is what they are). Perhaps, an image from inside the old cathedral showing the tower rather than the far wall and window. Snowman (talk) 22:22, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
The original C&W hospital house was at the end of Little Park St so probably no-longer exists. I misunderstood your question and thought you meant photos for the "Health and education" section, and yes an image of the foundations would be of interest as there is mention of them in the article, as well as one of St. Michael's tower and spire from inside the old cathedral. --Red Sunset 22:47, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Golden Eagle

Hi. I just redid my change of earlier today for the sorting of Golden Eagle. It is necessary because when you look at the Category page "Birds of Turkey" you will see that all of the other birds there are referenced alphabetically according to the first word of their name, not the second. Your change makes "Golden Eagle" solely stand out as unalphabetical.

This all arsises from a limitation with the Wikipedia Category referencing system. If you look at a list such as "Birds of Canada" you can see what an absolute mess is made when birds are sorted by the last word of their Common Name.WikiLambo (talk) 18:08, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Whoops; I did not see the DEFAULTSORT. Snowman (talk) 18:12, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Levi Fox

Thanks for the tweaks. I haven't added any cats, but otherwise do you think the article is ready for release? What's the purpose of the {{Persondata}} template? --Red Sunset 21:39, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Personaldata is for indexing somewhere on wiki. I think that "Shakespeare Birthplace Trust" could make a separate article, which will be enhanced by specialist editors. There is a redlink to it from the "Stratford-upon-Avon" article. Lets think about making two pages for a few days before moving the sandbox. Is that reasonable? Snowman (talk) 21:54, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
I spotted an SBT redlink somewhere too when checking out the wls. It wouldn't be a bad idea to create a page for it; there may be something that can be gleaned from their website and then, as you say, specialist editors could work on it. I'm grateful for the work you've done, but some of the flow and refs have got a bit jumbled so I'll tweak it some more – probably tomorrow. --Red Sunset 22:26, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Update: I notice you've already addressed my points; cheers! :)--Red Sunset 22:30, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
It is partially unjumbled probably. It looks like it is going to form two pages, perhaps over the week end. There are many photographs of the Birthplace on commons, but I am not sure if there are any images of the Shakespeare Centre, which is next door. Snowman (talk) 22:40, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Apparently it's a controversial concrete and glass structure – quite a contrast! --Red Sunset 23:05, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

I wanted to know if you (or any friends of yours) are interested in dermatology, and would be willing to help me with the WikiProject Medicine/Dermatology task force? Kilbad (talk) 14:07, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Actually, I do not usually formally join wikiprojects; however, I can help I little I think. Do have have histology photographs of skin diseases that can be uploaded? Snowman (talk) 21:50, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
I actually have a lot of dermpath slides, but not way to get good photos or scans of them. kilbad (talk) 03:56, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:High Windows.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:High Windows.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:24, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing me up to date. I merely removed the border from the image; however, I was not informed that it was changed for a different version of the book cover on the article "High Windows", prior to now. It looks like it can be removed. Snowman (talk) 18:19, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Your idea

I've replied to your request on my own talk-page; since we might want to open up the discussion to others, I thought it useful to have it all in one place. Btw I'm about to make an edit to the page which I think you'll approve of :-) almost-instinct 12:56, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

LiftSystem

Thanks for looking at the article – can you spot any other potential improvements? Out of interest, does it make any difference whether or not we use the wikitable format? Did you rate it as "Start-Class" per the banner or "B-Class" as in the edit summary? Cheers:-) --Red Sunset 21:18, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

It is very good and I like the images. I put it as a B class, but there is a bug in the template and it shows as a Start class. Someone should report it to get it fixed. I was thinking that if you started it as an article and developed it within 5 days then you could get a DYK. There are other constraints on what a DYK is. Snowman (talk) 21:48, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
I copied the hidden text from the banner drop-down into the assessment template per the instructions there and it seems to work now! Thank-you. --Red Sunset 22:12, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Cheers Snowman, I've self-nommed it for DYK, had three article DYK's already but they were nommed by someone else. Will see what happens, there are a lot of nominations competing. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 00:44, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Hey, it was on the main page as DYK yesterday. Snowman (talk) 22:55, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Like Andy Warhol said 'we all get 15 minutes of fame!' I was on Grampian TV news once for five minutes but that's probably not fame! Nice to see it there, a rare moment for the av project. Those guys dealing with the DYK's work like beavers, top stuff. Cheers. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 23:15, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
I have contributed to a few DYKs, which were collaborations and several editors got the DIY badge each time. I did not nominate them myself, so I am not familiar with the nomination process. Snowman (talk) 18:14, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Wired article using a picture of yours

Hi, Snowman. Did you see this? —JerryFriedman (Talk) 22:45, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Gosh yes, it is my photograph. I took the photograph of some of my PDAs on one of my chess boards. There is a small link to the wiki at the bottom of the page, but it is easy to miss. I am glad my photographs are of some use. Snowman (talk) 22:52, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Shakespeare's Birthplace

I'm having problems with the main image not loading at 300px, or in actual fact anything greater than 200px! Any ideas on where the problem might lie? --Red Sunset 22:03, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

I guess there is a temporary hiccough, which I can not explain. Snowman (talk) 22:44, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
The hiccough is inexplicably better now; these things happen. Snowman (talk) 18:16, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your work on the article, the image and infobox look great! I've nommed it for DYK, but we'll see what happens. --Red Sunset 19:10, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
"In 1846, P. T. Barnum proposed to buy Shakespeare's Birthplace and ship it brick-by-brick from England to the US." ... I did not know this. Snowman (talk) 19:27, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad you mentioned that; it made me check my refs, some of which I'd mixed up! According to the BBC site, it doesn't actually state that Barnum proposed to buy it in 1846, but we know from the SBT site that was when the property was put up for sale. --Red Sunset 20:55, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
And provide the infobox image linked to the DYK page at a suitable small size? Snowman (talk) 21:10, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

(Return) I did try that yesterday but it wouldn't load at any size. I'll try it again. --Red Sunset 21:16, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Done! --Red Sunset 21:22, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Fine. Snowman (talk) 21:23, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
The DYK fact is independently repeated on the Barnum biography page, where the ref is a book, but as the book is not available here for checking, it can not be used as an additional ref. Snowman (talk) 21:27, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the update; I've commented on the DYK page and adjusted the article slightly. --Red Sunset 19:54, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
Update: now has "verified" tag and is ready for DYK! --Red Sunset 21:18, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
That is good news. Snowman (talk) 21:20, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for prompting me with the "Barnum" hook; more interesting than the one I originally proposed. --Red Sunset 21:28, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
"Brick-by-brick" is used in the original text. It did seem a bit strange, but then it makes more sense when you think that part of the outside of the building had been refaced in brick before the SBT acquired it, ie. when Barnum saw it! --Red Sunset 21:35, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

upload request

Thanks for the many photos you've uploaded! Another request: You just uploaded a photo of a toucan here, but I managed to miss the earlier photo in the same photo-stream where the bill is shown far better. Consequently, it also shows the intergrade bill-pattern far better. If you have the time, could I get you to upload it and then exchange it with the photo I just added to the article here ? (the text on it being an intergrade also fits for the new photo, so no reason to change that). Thanks. • Rabo³ • 12:03, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Completed - it appears to me that recently the links on en wiki are staying red for a few hours if the link is put on en wiki before the image appears on commons after a new upload to commons, after the new image has been processed on commons somehow it appears on commons, and then the en wiki page might need to be re-saved (with or without making an edit on the page) presumably to clear a wiki casche or a bug in the wiki software to clear the red link. Snowman (talk) 12:17, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
I have already cleared the red link on the en wiki page by re-saving the page with on edit - nothing is registered in the page history that anything has happened if no edit is done at the same time, but it makes a big difference to the new image which becomes visible. Editor review, etc.

Thanks for your editor review. Your criticisms were well-thought, civil, and constructive, and I'll keep them all in mind. By the way, I noticed that we encountered the same vandal the other day--"User:Scizozorro", I believe. If you see someone, like him, adding nonsense beginning with "Tony Hey Tony," feel free to report them to "WP:AIV" right away, as they're likely a sockpuppet of the infamous "User:Runtshit" (see "Wikipedia:Long_term_abuse#Runtshit"). Cosmic Latte (talk) 02:18, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you. I do not see any confirmation that User:Sciz is a sock-puppet, and I have no evidence to corroborate that it is a sock-puppet. Snowman (talk) 12:22, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Biological clock human

Hi! Sounds like you may be considering making some changes to this image. I know nothing about MDD but a little about circadian rhythms. A suggestion. It is unlikely that melatonin secretion continues clear 'til 07:30 in this clearly morningness chronotype person. What was likely meant is that melatonin levels have returned to their daytime (undetectable) low by 07:30. Its half-life is less than an hour, so this would make sense. Thanks, - Hordaland (talk) 19:40, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

This is interesting, I had not focused on melatonin metabolism. I think that it would be a best if you would contribute this knowledge and your keen observations to the discussion on the MDD talk page. Snowman (talk) 19:50, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, you seem to have stepped unwittingly into a mine field, don't wory about it. Both the cropped images are better than the original lead image, which was only selected because it gave the full on iconic image that is recognised arownd the world. Regarding the new, my puritanical classicism prefers the Yomangani version because I think an architectural page whouls show the architecture at close hand and all else is secondary, but I'm not that othered which one is chosen. Blackbird image

I think it would be problematic even with an adult male. Differences from nominate T. m. merula are that T. m. aterrimus is slightly smaller, its bill averages relatively shorter and the adult male is duller black or tinged brownish. The size cannot be judged from the excellent photo, the bill isn't obviously shorter, and on a first summer male the plumage is unhelpful.

On range, it should be aterrimus, but merula/aterrimus intergrades occur in the Balkans, or it could be a vagrant nominate bird. I'll add it to the article anyway, sicne we don't have this plumage. Thanks jimfbleak (talk) 16:15, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
