Red link categories

Please do not add nonexistent, red link categories to articles and pages on Wikipedia unless you plan on creating the category yourself AND the new category fits into the existing Wikipedia category structure. See WP:REDNO. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 19:40, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- User:Liz I was planning on creating that category but it has been deleted. I am running into problems with recent recategorizations in this area. If you are willing to help, I've left a question in the Teahouse but have gotten no responses, I would appreciate any advice you could give me on how to address this. Hi there, Skvader, and thanks for all the well presented, detailed biographies of women you have created over the past few months. Most of them have reached C class or even higher. As you are a librarian, I think you would be a useful member of the Women in Red project where you would be able to assist less experienced contributors and take part in our discussions on future planning, etc. You can do so through the box at the top of the project's main page. Wheelchair-bound
Why are you removing this phrase from articles? Can you please cite a Wikipedia policy, or literally anything else, that says this phrase shouldn't be used? – PeeJay 17:34, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
- Happy to list some reputable sources that say that "wheelchair bound" is not appropriate language.
- "Wheelchair bound" is included on Wikipedia's own List of disability-related terms with negative connotations
- Wikitionary suggests this phrase is not an appropriate term: wiktionary:wheelchairbound
- The American Psychological Association suggests not using this phrase [1]
- The ADA National Network suggests not using this phrase [2]
- The California Courts suggest not using this phrase [3]
- In many cases, the phrase is not needed. For example, in the page you just reverted my edit on (1973 Minnesota Vikings season), the previous sentence informs that the player is paralyzed. In other cases, when it's more appropriate, I'm rephrasing to more accurate, respectful phrasing, such as "requiring the use of a wheelchair" or "using a wheelchair." Thanks for asking! - Wikipedia and Wiktionary are not reputable sources, as Wikis cannot be used as sources for themselves. The others you say "suggest not using this phrase", which is hardly prohibitive. Unless I see evidence that the term is regarded as actually offensive, I don't see any reason to go around removing the term en masse. – PeeJay 22:42, 24 December 2022 (UTC)

- The American Psychological Association states: "wheelchair bound" or "confined to a wheelchair" are both "negative and condescending terminology"
- The California Courts states: "wheelchair bound, confined or restricted to a wheelchair" is "inappropriate"
- The New York City Mayors Office for People with Disabilities states: "Wheelchair Bound" is an "offensive term"
- The UK Cabinet Office lists "confined to a wheelchair" or "wheelchair-bound" as "words to avoid"
- The National Center on Disability and Journalism states: avoid "confined to a wheelchair" or "wheelchair-bound"
- The United Nations Office at Geneva states: "confined/restricted to a wheelchair" or "wheelchair-bound" is "language to be avoided"
- The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations says: "do not use the following terms," including "confined to a wheelchair, wheelchair-bound"
- The New Zealand Ministry of Social Development says to "avoid" "heelchair bound, confined to a wheelchair"
- CDC Disability and Health Promotion branch states: "do not use" "confined or restricted to a wheelchair, wheelchair bound"

None of the cited material constitutes a Wikipedia policy, including the list of disability-related terms article, that requires this change to be made unilaterally by you across the entire site.
