Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

TBAN Reminder

As I'm sure you're aware the recent AN discussion walks the line of your TBAN. So far I don't see the kinds of statements that lead to the TBAN and the specific people you've inquired about do not fall with-in even a broadly construed definition of the Holocaust or anti-semtisim. And while you should have given Coffee time to respond before going to AN (something you've acknowledged) I don't yet see any insinuation towards him of anti-antisemitism. However, both Coffee and TheSandDoctor have noted that there are elements of antisemitism at play in these edits. As such the conversation might reach a point where you won't be able to participate further without violating your TBAN. Further, as I have noted when we've interacted in the past, please do try and continue your focus on content not editors. This diff (to use your language) starts to smell like what happens when you're building to the kind of statement that would be a violation of the TBAN. Apologies for reminding you of things you already know but this felt like a situation where an ounce of prevention - even at the risk of annoying you - was worth a pound of cure. Barkeep49 (talk) 08:00, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Barkeep49, I meant that someone was pranking the OTRS to have them remove all these categories and lists. Sir Joseph (talk) 08:08, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Sir Joseph, I can't go into details but I see strong evidence against the suggestion the ticket is a prank or false filing. There's a lot more I wish I could write but I am bound by OTRS confidentiality myself. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 08:20, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Barkeep49, so all this is from ONE ticket? That is even moresbsurd. That does not make sense at all. Something is certainly not right then, to change dozens of lists and cats because of one complaint? What was the process? Who was involved? Sir Joseph (talk) 08:34, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
As you don't trust my response to date enough to avoid having nagging feelings, I am declining to say more (though I will encourage you to read OTRS policy on confidentiality if you haven't recently). Hopefully someone whose answers you will trust will reply to your question here or at AN. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:56, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Barkeep49, I didn't say I didn't trust you. You said you can't go into detials and you have strong evidence. But it's one ticket. So I'd like to see as much as I can. I mean something is amiss when you are deleting hundreds of entries. That is why I think it's a prank. I fail to see how having Allen Ginsberg or Uriah Levy or perhaps Haym Solomon labeled as a Jew would be detrimental and require OTRS handling. Sir Joseph (talk) 15:59, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Våler & Os articles

Thanks for that! Shouldn't the original article locations (Våler, Hedmark and Os, Hedmark) be turned into redirects? As I now understand it, the areas are moving district, but there's nothing "wrong" with the original title that means that there shouldn't be redirects, and there are a lot of backlinks. Blythwood (talk) 05:26, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Ah, just seen you did that afterwards. No worries! Blythwood (talk) 05:27, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Blythwood, I think because the page had a PROD on it, the script didn't work, so I had to manually do all that. Usually it automatically makes a redirect with a swap. Just one more reason not to cut and paste. :) Also, I think the inbound links gets fixed by a bot within a day or so. Sir Joseph (talk) 05:29, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello Sir Joseph,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Move mishap

Hi. Talk:Tulsa race massacre/Archive 1 and Talk:Tulsa race massacre/Archive 2 are now redirects to themselves. I would fix it, but I'm unable to find the original archives. Hope you know where to find them. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 00:28, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

  • Never mind; I found them. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 00:31, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
R'n'B, thanks, that was weird indeed. It looks like @El C: moved the talk page archives but not the actual talk page itself which is why the RM request was made. But not sure how that even happens. I've noticed weird things happen every once in a while with the round-robin swap that I manually have to check, but I guess I missed this one. Sir Joseph (talk) 01:08, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
  • I missed it, too. Thanks for attending to this. El_C 01:09, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Arbitration case opened

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog/Evidence. Please add your evidence by March 23, 2020, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration.

All content, links, and diffs from the original ARC and the latest ARC are being read into the evidence for this case.

The secondary mailing list is in use for this case: arbcom-en-b@wikimedia.org

Need consensus on List of interment/concentration camp page

Hello Sir Joseph,

Are you willing to stop by and add some points to be had here?: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_concentration_and_internment_camps#USHMM_and_Open_Letter_to_the_Director_of_the_USHMM

There's some bizarre phrasing that I thought I could fix since the source does not make the claim, but there is a lot of opposition. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2607:FB90:4A34:9254:58E9:3552:CAC8:CAA5 (talk) 00:39, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Edward Kosner

FWIW, I do think that your continued participation at Kosner is a a violation of your TBAN or at least the broadly construed aspect - the reason for Kosner's reluctance quite plainly stated is antisemitism. I am involved with regard to that content so this is me in my editor hat asking you to consider the point. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 18:55, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

On 22 April 2020, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Thirty-fifth government of Israel, which you nominated. Just a courtesy note to let you know I've closed that discussion without any particular consensus for any kind of interaction ban between the two of you. I appreciate your reluctance to agree to such a restriction, and without removing the "no fault" part of it there was little chance of a consensus to impose one, given the intentional lack of any evidence against you being provided. But it's very clear that neither of you feel further interactions between you are productive, so I'd strongly recommend you continue your informal non-interaction with each other, and this will be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Best wishes! ~ mazca talk 20:12, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

You misrepresented a source at Jaba', Jerusalem

At [1] it appears that you are suggesting that the source does not call it a "segregation wall", although the section heading is "Jaba' Village and the Israeli Segregation Wall Plan" and the first sentence in that section says "The Israeli Segregation Wall Plan has had a negative and destructive impact on Jaba' village." That's not a good idea, and if you actually want to make sure that NPOV is followed I'd think you would have to use both terms. Doug Weller talk 10:01, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Doug Weller, the link is to separation wall and the article is at West Bank Barrier a neutral term, segregation wall is a redirect and a pov term. It's not a neutral term and shouldn't be used. Sir Joseph (talk) 12:16, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
How are they not both POV? And no, the link is to Israeli West Bank barrier, so it's a pov link. The redirect doesn't count, only the actual article. Doug Weller talk 13:23, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Doug, respectfully, I think the determination as to what is or isn't a pov term in this case should be decided through article talk page discussion. El_C 13:26, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Doug Weller, she changed the link to Segregation wall which is a redirect to Israeli West Bank barrier a more neutral term, AND THE ACTUAL TITLE OF THE ARTICLE. I don't think I have to explain to you how segregation wall is a POV term, and besides how changing a link from an article to a redirect is not the correct thing to do. Further, as the article itself points out, the BBC and the NYTimes both use the term West Bank barrier. Sir Joseph (talk) 13:44, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Doug, with the utmost respect for you (as I have always had from day 1 of my WP birth) and the need for compliance with NPOV, I did the research regarding your suggestion in an effort to reach a compromise, and the following is what I found: the cited source ARIJ is at the very least, an involved advocacy in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which is a valid reason to exclude stating material cited to them in WikiVoice. Their views which are based on their research may be included provided we use WP:INTEXT (forgive the wikilink but my use of the term intext attribution was once a target for ridicule so I've made it a habit to wikilink as a safeguard). Having said that, I'm of the mind that DUE is also a consideration since the term "segregation wall" raises a WP:REDFLAG in light of it being supported by a primary source. Atsme Talk 📧 15:22, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
@Atsme: I think you know I would prefer sources about the organisation, and Applied Research Institute–Jerusalem, not a terribly good article, doesn't mentioned its pov. I am happy with the word barrier, but not with either separation wall or segregation wall on its own. I've been saying that at Huldra's talk page as well. Hopefully the discussion as moved on to the article's talk page. Huldra raised the question of the ARI as a source at RSN but there was no conclusion. Doug Weller talk 15:46, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Doug Weller, Plus, as I'm sure, it's always best to link to the actual article and not to a redirect. It's this secret POV push this subject area can do without. Sir Joseph (talk) 16:14, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Not to be repetitive, but the primary title on the English Wikipedia is Israeli West Bank barrier. All other terms for it are contested. So, that's the starting point. Including (or excluding) these additional terms would depend on consensus reached on the article talk page (or lack thereof). Still early days. El_C 16:19, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
@El C: as you say. That should be the starting point, with no redirects. Doug Weller talk 17:19, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Doug, I'm glad we're in agreement. El_C 17:33, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Apology accepted. Sir Joseph (talk) 17:35, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Eek Oppose

Hi SJ. Sorry to see you land in oppose. Given your previous neutral and stated openness to supporting, I'm wondering what in response to your question you found lacking or was it just the March 2019 ANI thread you linked? Not trying to change your mind which is why I'm posting here, I just genuinely want to understand your perspective better. Thanks, Barkeep49 (talk) 17:58, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Barkeep49, to be fair I actually was OK with the answer to that question. Granted, everyone should get equal treatment, but asking for advice on an admin AND established editors is decent advice for a newbie admin. I happened to be reading the ANI thread and I just didn't like the tone of how people were dismissing the civil concerns. I did switch to a weak oppose, if that matters. Sir Joseph (talk) 18:38, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the insight into your thinking. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 19:05, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

A joke

I can't remember who originally added it to WP:JOKES but one of my favorite pieces of content isn't really a joke but is a parable: A Wikipedian and a vandal are stranded on a deserted island. On the first day, the Wikipedian builds a raft, but at night, the vandal destroys it. The second day, the Wikipedian lets the vandal know that one or more of his contributions to the raft did not appear constructive, and rebuilds the raft. The vandal destroys it. The third day, the Wikipedian asks the vandal to please refrain from making unconstructive changes to the raft, and rebuilds it again. Again, the vandal destroys it. The fourth day, the Wikipedian tells the vandal to please stop destroying the raft, and that if he destroys the raft again, he may not be allowed to participate in the building of the raft. The Wikipedian rebuilds the raft and the vandal destroys it again. On the fifth day, an admin finally arrives with the navy, announces that nobody can build a raft until everyone on the island agrees about whether or not a raft should be built, and sails off. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 17:24, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Barkeep49, yeah, that's a good one, and it's true. Many articles get caught up and locked due to vandalism and then good edits can't be placed. Then again, there is also Wikipedia:Lamest_edit_wars which is also a fun read. Sir Joseph (talk) 17:42, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

DS alert

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Sir Joseph, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Sir Joseph,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Double Standards at Wikipedia

I just love how in the past I was COFFEEBLOCKED for telling an admin that "You're not a good admin" and that was a personal attack (and the hubris of it was that in the block note, Coffee even said it was insulting to an AE imposing admin, as if that makes a difference, and in the unblock request an admin doubles down and says, that's a personal attack. Meanwhile, we have people calling others, assholes, using derogatory language, vile insinuation, and admins not only see it, but let them get away with it. What's worse is that when I commented at Jimbo's talk page about something, he threatened me because he made a reference to my block log. I then made a request to ARBCOM to get rid of some of my bad blocks, especially the one that Swarm did, which was an egregious violation of policy. Their response was that they can't because to revdel a block log requires community consensus or agreement of ARBCOM. Imagine that, I request from ARBCOM an agreement from ARBCOM. I then ask them to provide me with a vote tally but they refuse claiming the deliberations are private. I respond that I am not asking for deliberations, but just a vote, and they refuse. I highlighted several of my blocks that were problematic and I told them why I can't go to the community. They decided to WIKILAWYER and hide behind that rather than be transparent, or even IAR. On 23 June 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Jacob Frankel, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the United States Army employed its first non-Christian chaplain, Rabbi Jacob Frankel, during the American Civil War? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Jacob Frankel. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Jacob Frankel), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Nishidani

You could consider reporting Nishidani at WP:AE or probably even better at WP:ANI for his incivility at Talk:Judaism#Construal., although from the fact that he didn't revert me a second time when I removed his personal attack[3] I guess that he is making an effort to be less confrontational. Debresser (talk) 10:50, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Debresser, I should, but unfortunately, nothing will come of it. At AE, it will come to nothing, since it's not an AE area. And at ANI, I'll get sanctioned because that's how ANI works. Sir Joseph (talk) 14:02, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
Well, I don't think you're the one who'll get blocked, but yes, WP:ANI is not always populated by people who think straight. Debresser (talk) 17:10, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
Debresser, well, I asked El_C to do something about it, but we'll see what happens since Nishidani continues to be nasty and insulting. Sir Joseph (talk) 22:27, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I'm wondering why you chose this wording instead of Category:Rabbis that emigrated to Palestine or Category:Rabbis that emigrated to Ottoman Palestine? I know these are awkward, but that's what we usually write in biographies. "Land of Israel" seems archaic. Yoninah (talk) 00:33, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Yoninah, hi, that's what it was originally, IIRC, and it also then encompasses the whole land, which we have an article for. Theoretically we can create an Ottoman subcat, similarly to how we have an Israeli subcat, and then a Byzantine, etc. Sir Joseph (talk) 17:27, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
I prefer Land of Israel, because to them, that was what they did. Debresser (talk) 21:16, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Friendly warning

Unsourced qoute

Greeting, you reverted a removal of unsourced quoted material at Hayyim ben Joseph Vital citing "quote is sourced to reference used below". As a seasoned editor please look at the 2nd paragraph of the lead of THE POLICY on verifiability. All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed.. This was not a WP:BRD edit but was based further on the same policy that includes: BURDEN: The burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material, and The cited source must clearly support the material as presented in the article. Also, Any material lacking a reliable source directly supporting it may be removed and should not be restored without an inline citation to a reliable source., with the references explaining this in further detail.
We might argue wording such as "Must" or "should" but the bottom line is that if you are a regular contributor to this article you should provide an WP:inline citation or really self-revert the good faith and clear policy-based removal of unsourced quoted material, Further, when tags are placed on an article such as the May 2015 "Unsourced" tag in the "Early life" section, and it was to be removed, you might fall on the short stick side of a WP:dispute resolution if reverting it against policy. By-the-way, that 2015 career tag is why I didn't just tag the quote as needing sourcing. If those issues have not received any attention in over 5 years adding another tag would likely not do any good. My policy base actions sure got some attention but not the type that would actually resolve any issues. I hope there can be some "friendly" collaboration. Thank you, -- Otr500 (talk) 14:40, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Yom Kippur on OTD

Sorry, the article is not eligible for inclusion due to the {{more citations needed}} tag at the top. howcheng {chat} 04:31, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

@Howcheng: I just now removed this old tag, since with 61 citations in this not overly large article I see no justification for it. Debresser (talk) 16:34, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
Howcheng, I agree with Debresser, I think the article can be placed back on the OTD page. Sir Joseph (talk) 23:37, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but I disagree. The "Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur" section has one footnote, "Prayer service" has none, "Avodah: remembering the Temple service" has one, and "Mishnaic and Talmudic literature" has two. That's not nearly good enough. howcheng {chat} 00:20, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
I added some sources. Debresser (talk) 07:27, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
The details of the Avodah were added in this edit by a 2006 IP editor, and their source is indicated in the first paragraph of that section.
The details of the Prayer service section were added in stages by User:Shirahadasha, who hasn't edited since 2019. Perhaps other editors can find sources for these. I added one, at least, and tagged the section. Debresser (talk) 07:53, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Status of Jerusalem neighborhoods

Hi, I'm beginning to understand from the discussion at User talk:Supreme Deliciousness that there is no policy page on the status of Jerusalem neighborhoods. That user keeps insisting that any Jerusalem neighborhood is not part of Israel, while many others contend that West Jerusalem has always been part of Israel and never been claimed by Palestine. I'm feeling that we would be up for a tremendous fight with the pro-Palestinian editors on these pages, but should we try to gain consensus on the status of West Jerusalem/East Jerusalem/non-Jerusalem? And where would we begin? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:03, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Sir Joseph,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Rank Username Num reviews Log

9 Hughesdarren (talk) 4,520 Patrol Page Curation
10 Utopes (talk) 3,958 Patrol Page Curation
Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Out of line

You are out of line (diff). I already told Debresser that he needs to provide assurances of being willing to self-correct, if he wishes to avoid the sanction. I don't appreciate you casting aspersions about me or my motives. Please do not do that again. You should not mistake me as a target for you to attack whenever you disagree with something I do.

By the way, the appeal is still open. The latest admin to have commented on it was Thryduulf, who writes: If anything, a two week block without a topic ban is too lenient given how obvious it should have been that the behaviour was completely inappropriate. (diff). But, no, you go with "punishment." That's just lovely. Please take note and adjust your behaviour accordingly. I would rather not have a repetition of this. El_C 06:06, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

This is what you wrote, "oh, a topic ban is coming. That was the original plan (diff), and it remains so." Sir Joseph (talk) 16:27, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
So? What about it? I mean, it was the original plan. That was just me stating the plain fact. How you, somehow, go on to interpret this as serving as a "punishment" on Debersser for filing an appeal is quite beyond me. Why would I seek to penalize someone when they question my decision, anyway? Either such an appeal would validate my position or it would invalidate it. Whatever will be, will be. I welcome extra review as a matter of course and most definitely hold no grievances over those who seek it. El_C 16:40, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

And I had the same thing happen to me, and this was after I asked an admin about it and he told me to file an appeal which I did and he then punished me for it. Like Debresser I have no faith in the community and admins here. Sir Joseph (talk) 16:37, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Frankly, at this point, I'm not that interested about what happened to you with respect to your own appeal; nor, for that matter, do I wish to learn more about your faith or lack thereof in "the community and admins" (or whatever). I just would prefer if you were to keep any aspersions about me to yourself, if you don't mind. El_C 16:45, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Films about Chabad

Hi!

You reverted my re-adding of the movie Code of Silence from the section on Chabad in film and television. I understand your reasoning, but I feel that several of the works still on the list are no more "about Chabad" than Code of Silence seems to be. From its own description: "Manny Waks was a victim of child sex abuse at the Ultra-Orthodox Chabad Yeshiva in Melbourne. He demands the perpetrators be brought to justice, as well as the Rabbis, whom he claims covered it up. His father Zephaniah, who claims he has been virtually excommunicated for informing secular authorities, demands his name be publicly cleared. But what price will the father and son pay for blowing the whistle on the leaders of this powerful Jewish sect? ... This is a film that reveals the ongoing dominance of an ancient Code of Silence and the consequences for challenging it." Does that not sound like Chabad is a central part of the film? Or at least as central as it is in for example "Welcome to the Waks Family – a 2003 documentary of a Chabad family in Australia", "The Rabbi Goes West – a 2019 documentary on a Chabad rabbi who moves to Montana", "Gut Shabbes Vietnam – a 2008 documentary on a Chabad family in Vietnam", "Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities – a 1993 TV adaptation of the one-person play by Anna Deavere Smith. It explores the Black and Hasidic viewpoints of people connected directly and indirectly to the Crown Heights riots."

I am in favor of adding back Code of Silence, but I could also agree to focus the list more narrowly on works about Chabad as a religious movement, rather than the stories of people in the Chabad community. Wish you all the best! Knuthove (talk) 19:47, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

It could be that Chabad is central to the film, according to Waks, but it's not a film central to Chabad. It's like saying any Hallmark movie should be in the article of Christianity or Christmas, as an example. Sir Joseph (talk) 20:36, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
I'd say that is an argument for removing most of the movies on that list, as they are not central to Chabad, but merely movies about members of Chabad. It seems inconsistent to me to remove Code of Silence but keep the other movies. Do you agree? Knuthove (talk) 20:51, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
I think it makes sense to remove many movies where the people being Chabad is the only reason for inclusion, rather than the movie being about Chabad. You might want to post on the article talk page and see about consensus for other movies. Sir Joseph (talk) 22:35, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your input! I wrote a new section on the talk page. Knuthove (talk) 23:47, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Why did you revert my edits??

Why did you revert the use of honorifics? Would it not be applied the same logic that considers it discongruent to strip Dr. or M.D. from someone of those qualifications, to judge the same by the title "Rabbi" (which is not merely granted without merit, but instead awarded through the passing of tests of both knowledge and ethics). Furthermore, why was the information and references that I added concerning a forged letter from Rabbi Kamenetsky, also reverted. In terms of judging another with Good Faith and giving each individual the benefit of reasonable doubt, I feel that you may be lacking in such traits considering that ALL of the edits were reversed rather than pinpointing the orgin of the problem. SamPezlov (talk) 04:12, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

SamPezlov, It's not necessarily all instances of using "Rabbi" but we don't use it throughout the article. We try to follow guidelines and sometimes that means we need to drop the Rabbi. Also, you removed (or negated) his views on vaccines when you re-wrote the part of his saying it's a hoax. Sir Joseph (talk) 23:57, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

I re-added the sections that I don't believe were the problematic parts (such as his policy regarding allowing an unvaccinated child into a school, and the forged kol korai). P.S. For future reference, don't make sweeping reverts that harm the entirety of the article for the purpose of correcting the few misdeeds. SamPezlov (talk) 03:33, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Testimonial for Yoninah

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I've quoted you in Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Obituary, which is a draft Signpost obituary for Yoninah. On her talk page, you left a note saying "תהי נשׁמתה צרורה בּצרור החיים". Would you like to provide an English translation? I can do it myself on Google Translate, but I figured you might prefer your own interpretation.

However, please note that I can't guarantee that your testimonial will appear in the final version of the obituary, as it still has to go through review by Signpost staff. Also, if you prefer that I remove your comment from the obituary, I'd be happy to do so. Edge3 (talk) 14:46, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi, sure and appreciate the ask. The text is usually translated as "May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of life", it is most often found on the bottom of a gravestone, and Yizkor prayer, and comes from the book of Samuel 1, 25:29. Sir Joseph (talk) 14:52, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll add it in. Edge3 (talk) 14:57, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Also, a small nitpick, Jews don't usually use RIP when discussing the deceased. If you wish to honor her, you can use BDE, or Barukh Dayan Ha'emet, or "Blessed is the true judge" which is often said when hearing news of someone passing, and is part of the blessing said at a Jewish funeral. Sir Joseph (talk) 15:23, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for that suggestion. I've added it into the obituary's blurb as well. However, I just checked Bereavement in Judaism, and the spelling ("Barukh... dayan ha-emet.") is slightly different from yours. I understand that transliterations often differ, but I'm wondering if you know WP:HE well enough to know which version to use? Edge3 (talk) 16:02, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
If you want to use English, you'll get various spellings and even I used two types in my reply. There's academic, street, spoken, etc. But I think since we're dealing with a Wikipedian, we can use "academic" and what you posted would be correct (without the "..." because we are skipping the middle part, so "Barukh dayan ha-emet" or "ha'emet" works). In Hebrew, it would just be, ברוך דיין האמת. The apostrophe or dash is merely spacing the "the" word.Sir Joseph (talk) 18:07, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks so much. I think I'll keep it romanized for now, since it's a blurb that will be posted on the Signpost front page, and not contained within the article body itself. You'll see that there are lines in the article kept in the original Hebrew. However, the Signpost editors might have different thoughts once they start editing. Thank you for what you said on Yoninah's talk, - see also Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2021-03-28/Obituary! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:00, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
