Hello! I just wanted to flag an RFC you may—or very well may not—be interested in. The page is 1984 New York City Subway shooting, and, concededly, the question is hardly the stuff of exciting debate: "Should this article, concerning firearm-related violence with multiple persons injured, be included in mass-shooting categories, even though no sources directly refer to it as a 'mass shooting'?" I wanted to bring this question to your attention because I noticed you once reverted the removal of the categories in question—though it appears that may have been only because their removal wasn't justified, and not because you had strong feelings on their appropriateness. While I'd of course appreciate your input, if you have no interest, I completely understand, and I apologize for taking up your time! Have a great day, --Jerome Frank Disciple (talk) 14:23, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

Information icon Please remember to assume good faith when dealing with other editors, which you did not do on WP:ANI. If you have been editing Wikipedia long enough to know what vandalism is, you have been editing long enough to know what is not vandalism. User:MrsSnoozyTurtle is not a vandal. You may think that her edits are harmful to Wikipedia, and they may be or may not be, but she is trying to improve the encyclopedia. Do not accuse regular editors of vandalism unless you actually have evidence of harmful intention. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:12, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Couldn't you then make that statement about most editors who are described as vandals then, including at AIV, Robert McClenon? Considering that's all about prescribing someone's actions as vandalism. Intentionally reducing an article to two sentences and removing all reliable sources used in the article after the AfD did not return the Delete outcome that was desired showcases intent in the action itself. An intent that is meant to make it easier to get the article deleted in the future. And which I rightfully describe as vandalism of said article. SilverserenC 04:27, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from MYtun (13:16, 12 May 2023)

Hi, I would like to create a new Wikipedia article about a topic that does not have a current webpage. How can I do that, or can I do that? --MYtun (talk) 13:16, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi, MYtun! My suggestion is to work on building the article in your sandbox first, which would be at User:MYtun/sandbox. The main thing you'll need for whatever the topic is is reliable source coverage discussing the subject at length. So things like newspaper articles, published books, academic papers, ect. GOOD Meat

Hi Silver, I recently started a draft for GOOD Meat. I thought you might be interested. Seems to be getting a lot of attention lately and will likely continue to. Best, Thriley (talk) 16:41, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Hey, Thriley, I started looking into this one. But according to the New York Times article you already have in there, Good Meat is just a division of Eat Just. Is there anything that would give the division enough notability that wouldn't just apply to the parent company itself? The information about their cultured meat presentation in Singapore is already in that existing parent article. SilverserenC 02:47, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Oh GREAT. I didn’t notice that for whatever reason! Thank you for letting me know. I think there are a few other companies in that field that might meet notability. I’ll look into it. Best, Thriley (talk) 03:00, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Micjax! Based on your edits, I presume that you are Michelle Jackson? First off, you shouldn't be editing your article directly, that's a violation of the conflict of interest policy. You should make suggestions on the talk page of your article for others to implement. But giving a review over what you've changed, it seems fine, though we would prefer some form of secondary source for the international career section, such as a newspapers article. As for an image, you're going to first have to have a photo that doesn't have any copyright protections. Then you can upload it yourself along with a declaration of consent for its usage. See the third paragraph here that starts with "You can also donate content, such as photographs, to Wikipedia" for instructions. I hope that helps. SilverserenC 01:38, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Question from Wikauthor2023 (03:40, 22 July 2023)

Hi mentor, How should I write an article about a published author and photographer which won't get deleted by editors? --Wikauthor2023 (talk) 03:40, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Wikauthor2023! The first and primary thing you'll need are reliable sources that cover the subject in detail. Whether that be in newspapers, books, or academic papers. In the case of an author, reviews of their books from reputable sources helps count towards them meeting the minimum requirements of notability. Might I ask the name of the person you're wanting to make an article on? I can likely help you dig up some sources. SilverserenC 03:47, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

The author/photographer is called Bahram Abedini. Wikauthor2023 (talk) 03:51, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your help finding sources for that article. Much appreciated. Welcome! That whole AfD discussion is strange. Is there some reason for there to be an active negative campaign against her from somewhere? SilverserenC 21:38, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
I don't know, the internet is a strange place. From what I can make out, the editor who made the AfD nomination has only been around for a couple of months, and that day he went on a nomination spree and nominated lots of articles for deletion, and a couple of the other accouns have only been around for a few days, so those could be very inexperienced editors or sockpuppets, I have no idea. The whole thing is probably my fault because I didn't elaborate more when I created the article. Dr. Vogel (talk) 01:19, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Talk Page discussion of other users behavior WP:No personal attacks

I am not an admin. I am just a regular, no-body user.

Several days ago, you said: "I would expect long-term editors to be aware of this very basic structure and formatting of Wikipedia articles." [1]

I responded to you on that page, but after reviewing Wikipedia policy and guidelines, I should have removed the comment instead, and brought my concerns to your talk page.

Per Wikipedia:No personal attacks, "comment on the content, not on the contributer." "It is as unacceptable to attack a user with a history of foolish or boorish behavior, or one who has been blocked, banned, or otherwise sanctioned, as it is to attack any other user."

Per WP:AVOIDYOU: As a matter of polite and effective discourse, arguments should not be personalized; that is, they should be directed at content and actions rather than people.

It also states: "Discussion of a user's conduct or history is not in itself a personal attack when done in the appropriate forum for such discussion (for example, the other editor's talk page.."

While your comment to me was mild, you have a history of discussing editor behavior on talk pages in much more strongly worded terminology, strongly enough I won't quote them and just provide the diffs:[2] [3] [4] [5]

I have to ask you to please refrain from discussing other editors behavior on talk pages, and focus on the content. I will try to do the same. Denaar (talk) 17:29, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

You really don't understand how my comment WAS commenting on content and editing, ie the lack of understanding of how to properly format and edit ledes? Commenting on a person's editing is fully fine and is not a part of NPA whatsoever. All Wikipedia editors, especially long-term editors, are expected to understand how to properly write and edit Wikipedia articles. SilverserenC 22:33, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Vandalism

Please refer to WP:VAND: "On Wikipedia, vandalism has a very specific meaning: editing (or other behavior) deliberately intended to obstruct or defeat the project's purpose, which is to create a free encyclopedia, in a variety of languages, presenting the sum of all human knowledge". My edit is not vandalism. Zenomonoz (talk) 23:16, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Zenomonoz, I disagree with you on the content matter, but I agree your edit wasn't vandalism. Silver seren, I think you're a great editor, and that you'll be better off if you lay off the v-word a bit in cases like this. If you give WP:BLANKING a re-read, and WP:VAND in general, it's clear actions like Zenomonoz do not count. It was an explained removal of content, even if you or I disagree with the reason for it. Question from Rognosc (11:41, 17 August 2023)

hi i wanted to ask you how to create a new wiki page --Rognosc (talk) 11:41, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Rognosc, so the first thing you'll need is to make sure you have reliable sources discussing whatever the subject is you want to make a page on. These reliable sources would include things like newspaper articles, published books, academic and scientific papers, ect. We need these sources with enough in-depth coverage of the topic in order to meet the general notability guideline so that the page you create is kept here on Wikipedia. With all that pointed out, I should ask, what is the topic you want to make a page on? SilverserenC 00:30, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

The infobox contains no additional information that the lede doesn’t already cover other than the URL, and is presented on the exact same line as the lede. Even the phrasing is almost the same. What purpose does it serve to show the information twice at the same spot? NM 00:58, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

@Northern Moonlight: What are the cases where the vast majority of an infobox wouldn't be covered by a lede anyways? For people, maybe marriage and kids and some education, but that's pretty much it. Infoboxes are meant to be replications of the lede and such, with the information being more direct and easily accessible than having to read through the lede itself. SilverserenC 01:29, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
I’m ok if you keep the infobox but remove or rewrite the 3 line sentence in “purpose”. Infoboxes are great for items of one or two phrases, but not for prose. NM 01:37, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello there! I see you've been quite active in some things related to the above mentioned pages. I'm pinging you @Silver seren: directly to ask for some help. I've started 3 initiatives for these pages. If you could spare some time in the near future, could you please take a look at the proposal and voice your opinion? Of course, if you have interest, time, and energy to participate that would be amazing!

Here are the projects:

1. Talk:Philosophical_pessimism#A proposal for an overhaul of the article — this initiative is already in progress. The idea is to raise the quality of the page by switching it from a mere historical account to a more encyclopedic format.

2. Talk:Philosophical_pessimism#A proposal to split the History into a dedicated page — related to the one above. The historical account is overly detailed. It would be much better to have a dedicated page for the history of philosophical pessimism and leave only a brief history in the main page.

3. Talk:Antinatalism#A proposal to create a dedicated page for Benatar's axiological asymmetry — here, the idea is to extract the axiological asymmetry argument into a dedicated page. This way, a more detailed presentation could be given. In addition, we could expand on the various responses others philosophers made and counters from Benatar. Other pages could have a brief description and link to the details page.

I hope at least some of this will spark your interest! Fantastiera (talk) 14:07, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Edit disagreement on The Real Anthony Fauci page

Original Edit Note: I propose an edit to correct an inaccurate statement in the passage. The text suggests that the book likens vaccine mandates in the United States to living under the rule of Nazi Germany, which is not found in the book itself, and the cited source does not support this claim. This edit is essential to ensure the accuracy and fairness of the information presented on Wikipedia. Revised Response: My edit is based on the explicit wording in the source, which states, "which includes a book about 'The Real Anthony Fauci' and saying Anne Frank was better off than Americans under supposed vaccine mandates because she could at least hide from the Nazis." The passage in the wiki may imply that this statement was made in the book itself, but according to the source, it was made during a rally. The source [6] explicitly states, "It’s the vaccine skepticism, which includes a book about 'The Real Anthony Fauci' and saying Anne Frank was better off than Americans under supposed vaccine mandates because she could at least hide from the Nazis," with its own embedded source to [7] that itself says, "At a rally against vaccine mandates in Washington, DC, on Sunday, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. likened vaccine policies in the US to the actions of a totalitarian state, even suggesting Anne Frank was in a better situation when she was hiding from the Nazis." Dear Mentor,

I have information regarding scientific approximation of the mass of GRO J1655-40, a black hole. The estimate of 5.4 to 5.7 solar masses for the mass of GRO J1655-40 was provided in an article referenced as:

Z. Stuchlík1 and M. Kološ1 (June 27, 2016). “Controversy of the GRO J1655-40 Black Hole Mass and Spin Estimates and its possible Soilutions”. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. The Astrophysical Journal, Volume 825, Number 1. ApJ 825 13.DOI 10.3847/0004-637X/825/1/13.

I hope this information proves useful.\

Hi, Tom m. welsh! I agree that that looks like a proper source to use for that information in the article GRO J1655−40. Is there a reason why you can't add it with your account? You should WP:Be Bold and make the change. SilverserenC 19:31, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from SteveOuellette (21:23, 3 November 2023)

Hello mentor!

Just checking in that I did the edits here the right way, since this is my first one. Thanks!

It looks good to me, SteveOuellette. The statement in the article was uncited and you explained properly on the talk page how it doesn't apply (also, a personal website essay by Lane on the subject probably wouldn't meet our reliable source requirements, we would want something properly published for such a claim). So, good job! SilverserenC 22:08, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mörrenmorcogi Micó (12:00, 10 November 2023)

Hello, Silver Seren! I am hungarian beginner and I have accidentally put a page on a hungarian historian to the english user page. I will continue on hu.wikipedia.org. Can you continue mentoring me or should I look for a hungarian mentor? --Mörrenmorcogi Micó (talk 12:00, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Mörrenmorcogi Micó. If you're going to be editing on Hungarian language Wikipedia, then yes, you'd want to find a mentor over there, since the rules and regulations for making articles may be different from English language Wikipedia. Good luck! SilverserenC 21:24, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Signature and accessibility

Hiya :). Would you be willing to change your signature colour (the Silver part) to something that meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines? It currently has a contrast of 1.81:1, where 4.5:1 is recommended for contrast with the white background. this tool may help you find a different colour. I've prefilled the colour black we use in Wikipedia. A possible alternative is #757575 (or #949494 if you bold the silver part). Thanks in advance ☺️. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 20:29, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Femke. I was actually using span style color codes rather than HTML ones, "silver" in this case. I've changed it to "gray", does that work better? SilverserenC 23:21, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for changing :). It's clearly better, but strictly speaking still a tad too light (see the WebIAM tool). Gray is #808080 I believe, and #757575 is dark enough. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 20:07, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
"DimGrey" now, is that better, Femke? SilverserenC 22:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Perfect, thanks :) —Femke 🐦 (talk) 17:53, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Ayushshah-Elsner (06:24, 2 January 2024)

hii, silver seren --Ayushshah-Elsner (talk) 06:24, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

i want to ask you that if there's a website that has great authority and content that helps users but wikipedia does not have any information about it, is it ok to create informational page for that website. For example if you search "lifewire" on the google it will show the wiki page of lifewire.

please guid eme through it. Thank You --Ayushshah-Elsner (talk) 06:30, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Ayushshah-Elsner! To have an article made on Lifewire, you would have to show that it meets the notability requirements. Question: Is the Lifewire website you're referring to different from the Lifewire article we already have? SilverserenC 17:03, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Hello,
i am not talking about lifewire i just gave you an example, like lifewire can i create page for some other site that produces their original content on their website. So, when anyone that website name they can know what that website is what kind of information they provide and etc... Ayushshah-Elsner (talk) 04:35, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
The first thing you've need to do is make sure that there are reliable sources that discuss the website in question. So that means news articles and other such reputable sources of information. You have to have enough such sources to show that the website meets the general notability guideline. That is the requirement for allowing an article to be made on a subject on Wikipedia. DYK for Nancy Nash (actress)

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Nancy Nash (actress). Howdy Silver, any chance there is an available source for Draft:Zeke Faux's education? His linkedin says he went to Cornell, but I can't seem to find a good source that says so. A belated Happy New Year to you! Best, Thriley (talk) 01:31, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Zeke Faux - a History graduate from Cornell University - has been researching finance for more than 15 years.
Does this work, Thriley? It's from Diario Financiero, so it should be reliable. SilverserenC 04:20, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Perfecto! Thank you Silver. Thriley (talk) 04:23, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Edit

how can I edit a paragraph on Wikipedia without computer and without codes Fdeii (talk) 15:30, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Editing something on the internet without a computer or smartphone would be quite difficult. SilverserenC 17:19, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Began working on this article and wanted to get your opinion as to notability and article layout etc. I do not often work on actor articles and I remember working with you on Vivienne Baber a couple years ago. Thank you. Bruxton (talk) 23:00, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

Hmm, my concern right now, Bruxton, is the lack of significant coverage. While there are several articles entirely about him, they are from early in his career and there isn't evidence of sustained significant coverage since then. That's what I fear others would bring up if someone takes the article to AfD. SilverserenC 23:33, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, so borderline. Maybe I will leave it in draft for a bit. Bruxton (talk) 23:42, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
