Adding unsourced material[edit]

Hello and welcome! Just a note to follow the above: adding collections to articles is fine, but adding them without sources is not. All material on Wikipedia needs to be verifiable. Do you have a source for items like this edit?ThatMontrealIP (talk) 20:44, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mercy11: unfortunately the focus on the Kalamazoo museum extends to this edit that removed other (sourced) collections. I also note that the user's contribs (about 100 or so) are all about the same thing: adding the Kalamazoo museum. Seashell414, are you connected to the museum in any way?

Seashell414- Yes, I am an intern there working on a project. I am trying to backtrack and add sources. Many museums don't add sources to their collections section, so I thought it would be okay if I didn't source it. It's frustrating that other museums don't cite an item by the artist in their collection, yet remain on the list. It's unfair.

The formatting for many collections sections is rough, so I tried to clean it up. Make it easier to read. Seashell414 (talk) 14:23, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Seashell414. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Seashell414. hello! If you are working for the museum (you say above that you are an intern), you are an employee, paid or not. We have rules about this to keep the Wiki neutral, since employees are by nature more likely to promote their employer's organization than someone unrelated is. Thank you for disclosing. I fixed your user page so the template reads properly, as it was hidden with nowiki tags. I think your edits as an employee of the museum will be ok if:
  • if adding collections, they are neutral and fact-based,
  • you do not remove other museums from articles, as you did in an edit above,
  • you include and double check the sources,
  • you don't create new "collections" sections that include only the Kalamazoo museum. Focusing on a single museum is what we call WP:UNDUE and possibly WP:PROMOTION. An editor interested in the neutrality of the Wiki would add three or four museums, for example.
