SVG tip[edit]

Thanks for the tip. That may work well for the word INTERSTATE, but I'd certainly like to keep 000 as numbers so that it can eaisly be switched to another #. When it comes to actually using the SVGs for each highway though, that might make sense. I need to streamline the blue in the SVG. Oklahoma State Highways Project[edit]

Scott: good idea to start this project, thanks for doing it. There's been some discussion of the convention we should adopt for numbered route articles at Wikipedia:Naming_conventions/Numbered_highways. I started working on the New York State highway articles only to find out that some, like SPUI, are leaning towards 'Route N (State Name)' which I have now decided is preferable. This is because

1) the road is usually refered to as "Route N" locally,
2) The disambiguation of (State Name) rather than having the long title "State Name State Highway N" I believe is wiki-preferable,
3) I believe that not all state DOT's call their routes "state highways" in most references. I only researched NY (my main area of work) and mostly they use "Route N", but the WP aticles are almost all "NYSHn" ;-(. So, before you proceed you should look at, and participate in, the discussion and see what the outcome (if any) is. --Censorwolf 20:05, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blaise ketone synthesis svg image[edit]

Hello Scott5114, I noticed that you changed the reaction scheme image on Blaise ketone synthesis from a PNG to a SVG image. I changed it back because the PNG looked slightly better in Firefox and MUCH better in IE. My question is: Is there a reason to display SVG images over PNG images? I ask this because I draw MANY reaction schemes for chemical reaction articles. So far, the PNGs have worked well. SHS-compliant SVGs[edit]

The hardest part is the rounded corners.

In that case, I'd make all of the rounded edges out of 90 degree arcs of circles with 50 mm radii (or radiuses). Actually, those are tricky; 50 mm is to the outside, then 40 to the outside of the black line, then 25 to the inside of the black line. Do the black line in one shot that's 15mm thick and has a radius of 32.5 mm.

As far as the outside edge of the sign goes (50 mm away), that doesn't really technically need to be drawn. (In real life, the physical edge of the metal or whatever should be there.) However, the invisible line between the sign and transparency (the difference would only be noticable on a non-white background) should definetely exist.

This is how I did my first Interstate shields. When exported to PNG (before someone (was it you?) informed me about the object-to-path trick), Inkscape seemed to put a very thin line there, which was kind of cool. SPUI actually put a line around his that was extremely thin. Somewhere in the WT:IH, he and I discussed this line. Basically it's advantage is that you can see the difference between sign and transparency on a white backround. SHS itself actually puts a thin grey line there for illustrative purposes. The advantage to omitting it is that it looks better on non-white backgrounds. However, SPUI illustrated to me that it is not noticable. Bottom line: all of the Interstate signs now have these.

So yeah, I recommend that you do the following FIRST: once you've got the canvas size right, make four FULLY ENCLOSED (with the outside white, and 0mm strokes; otherwise they are two big) white circles (temporarily change the background color to green so you can see them) and have them in the four corners. Have them touching the edges of the canvas at two points but not crossing them. Then fill in the rest of the sign area with two white rectangles. Then, you can make the 15mm black lines in the corners as I described above. Then, make the other 4 straight lines.

That's the hardes part there. I'm not exactly sure how to make the barely-visible grey line thing, but like I said, it's not completely necessary. The text should be easy enough to figure out, just make sure it's centered and the right height (I know no way of getting it right, just start the text at 75 above the bottom and 300 from the left; then just write "ALT" (centered) and keep changing the font size until it's 75mm from the top. Obviously, use size D lettering.

Just one last note: I know you're just making a M1-4a right now, but all of the M3's and many of the other M4's seem to use the same dimensions and so forth (except for text size), so let me know when you finsih. Oh yeah, one last thing: if you make the Interstate-style ones, make sure you look up the exact blue coloration. (white and black are just #000000 and #ffffff)

I-95 Exit List[edit]

Hey, thanks for your contribution to the I-95 Exit List. I, and I'm sure the others involved, appreciate it. I just was wondering if you could bring the table in line with the others on the page, so that we have the same basic format for the entire article. I've summed it up on the I-95 Exit list Talk page.
