I'm really sorry to hear that you also had a really bad experience with your first edits :( I do believe that showing negative energy towards another editor will generally make them not want to edit. I do appreciate your honest, trust me, my own edit, many many years ago were knocked and torn down and deleted! However, I do believe in the power of positivity when it comes to encouraging new users. IMHO, if I was in your situation, I'd channel your anger into welcoming new users in a way that you weren't welcome. But, that's what I've done. You also have a team of fellow e-volunteers and IMA folks who'll gladly lend a hand when anyone is giving you a hard time, so please know that I'm here for you if you need it! :) SarahStierch (talk) 02:56, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

New Orleans Hackathon
MediaWiki and Wikimedia developers' meetup Hi, SarahStierch. I'd like to invite you to come to the New Orleans Hackathon 2011. It's an opportunity for MediaWiki developers and Wikimedia operations engineers to come together to work on advancing Wikimedia's tools and infrastructure, focusing on Wikimedia Labs (starting with the dev-ops virtualization cluster), and to train and to squash bugs. The theme of this event: "the infrastructure of innovation". We're going to improve and discuss the Wikimedia Labs projects infrastructure and other stuff that makes it easier for anyone to supercharge Wikimedia with awesomeness. We're going to work on our gadgets/extensions/tools support, authorization/authentication strategy, dev-ops virtualization, and general training and hacking. It's mostly going to be dev sprints and bugsmashing, with some discussion and workshops. Gals Panic

Well, thank you for showing some attention to an article I created over five years ago. haha! To clarify on the Steve Austin issue, I'm fairly certain it's a different guy because shortly after I wrote it, one of the guys in the band made a comment on their MySpace page questioning it himself. So I took it out. It made sense to me that it would be the same guy (same instrument, same city), but if I couldn't be 100% certain, I didn't want to leave it in. We (details upon request)

are looking for someone to check an inscription on the General William Tecumseh Sherman Monument in Washington DC. SIRIS and the original wikipedia article used the word "prefect" but an editor has just changed in to "perfect." Which I believe to be the correct wording, but . . . .... Is there a way you or another Washington DC person could check the statue? By the wayGoode, James M. The Outdoor Sculpture of Washington, D.C.: A Comprehensive Historical Guide, Smithsonian Institute Press, Washington, D.C., 1974, has the word as "perfect." Life is supposed to be interesting. GenderGap and IRC

Thanks for your invite of 21Aug11, to join the chats on #wikimedia:GenderGap. And yes, I would like a recommendation for my IRC client or application. I usually use Firefox browser, on an iMac using O/S X Leopard, so I could use Chatzilla if I got it. But if you recommend a different one, that would be even better, by me. (I should add that I'm really short of time to do all the WP writing I'd like to do; but will at least observe the chatting a few times. Hello Sarah, I have completed your survey! I shall pass it on to other female Wikipedians/Wikimedians that I know (not many at this point). I really did not realize the gender gap existed (and at such a wide imbalance). I do wonder what this means for the content of this site. I do understand that we do not want to merely reproduce the male-dominated, "Western" (white), middle-upper-class view of the world (history, culture, things that are deemed important to write about), but I do wonder if there is yet any evidence WHAT this gender gap means to Wikipedia (in terms of content/other concerns?) Also, just like sports viewership which is still very male-dominated, what ARE women doing with their time? One would think that we have escaped gender roles at this point, but maybe we have not. Thank you! I have signed up for the gender gap mailing list as well. I am very interested in what this gender gap means for Wikipedia and also regarding the different types of knowledge that are excluded from Wikipedia and what this means too (eg. oral history). I wish I had gone to your "Wikimedia & Indigenous Peoples: Pros, Cons and Community" talk at Wikimania 2011; it would really help with my project right now haha. My username indicates that I am female, but only to those acquainted with certain languages. This illustrates one of my problems with the assertions about the sex ratio among editors on Wikimedia projects. I don't think Wikimedia has any basis for thinking it knows what that ratio is, and insofar as female editors are less likely to declare their sex, there may not even be an imbalance. Talk with National Research Council?

Hi Sarah

I work for the National Research Council in Washington, DC (specifically, the Division on Earth and Life Studies, www.dels.nas.edu), and we are interested in learning more about how we can contribute to Wikipedia. Over the past month or so, I’ve been talking with Cheryl Moy and Daniel Mietchen to develop some strategies about how we might do this, and they told me about the GLAM project.

On October 26, I’m holding an informal lunchtime session to tell the staff in my division a little bit about Wikipedia and how our organization might contribute to it. Although the GLAM project is a bit different to what we’d be working on, I thought it would be great if one (or both, I'm also going to contact Dominic McDevitt-Parks) of the DC Wikipedians in Residence might be able to come and make a guest appearance. Perhaps you could talk about Wikipedia in general, why it is important for organizations to contribute, about the GLAM project, and your own experiences as a WiR.

Do you think you might be interested in this? If so, please let me know, and we can discuss this further.

I was looking at your Public Art lists, saw DC, took a look at the list, which is excellent, and wondered about murals. I've created a page for a DC muralist/health reform advocate, Regina Holliday, whose murals are for the most part in Chevy Chase (I still need to shoot some photos so that they can be CC'ed and placed through Wikimedia). Is there a list of DC murals on Wikipedia, could I start one or could I add her to your list?

A thought: you don't ask whether someone's username indicates, or hints at, their gender, although you ask if people have been described as he/him. Another thought: if you've selected editors by choosing those whose username appears specifically female, you've got a non-random subset of female editors (and perhaps a few eccentric male editors). In particular the answers to the question about being addressed as male will be skewed, but there may be (a) differences in people's experiences in other interactions because other editors know/assume they are female, and (b) differences in the characteristics of women who choose to be obviously female and those who don't. Sorry if this is all obvious. Not sure how else you could find subjects for your survey. Would the Signpost let you put a couple of lines asking for recruits? (To hit another non-random set of editors, those keen/geeky/time-rich enough to actualy read the Signpost!) PamD 15:07, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

The survey closes on Friday, so I think I'm okay with the coverage, thank you for the suggestion. I actually based my recruiting on 1) a tool created to examine what gender people chose on their preferences 2) if they have the "female" or "woman" (or related) userboxes on their page 3) if they identify themselves as a woman on their talk page. I have emailed over 1000 people and only 3 came back as men thus far. It has also been shared on twitter, facebook, most Wiki-mailing lists and being shared by others. Also, I think what is less appealing for women on wikipedia is the fighty environment and the look of wikipedia. Wikipedia has a far distaste in its looks, wikia project is much more colorful and more user friendly. I also think that socialization is slightly more important for women to keep editing than it is to men; women are more likely to feel unwelcomed if their edits are reverted, while men are more likely to revert the edits back and discussing the issue with the other editor, women seem to care more about how their edits are welcomed and this seems to affect their socialization; that may lead many women to leave wikipedia. That's why I think wikia project has more female editors than wikipedia, but, most editors are still male. I would like to see improvements. (: I was actually aware of this huge gender gap, but I hadn't yet taken a survey about it, so, thank you for giving me that opportunity! Nevertheless, I think it's a great idea. I'm quite concerned that the information here is often skewed, since there are so many more male than female participants. And with skewed I don't even mean deliberate lies, but the inclusion of information on males and the exclusion of those on females.

For instance, in the history section, where sometimes mothers are not even mentioned even if they played political roles in the life of the child and the child's connection to maternal relatives turned important later.Peaceingalaxy (talk) 13:58, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks a lot. It's good to see others caring about this issue too. Women are often filtered out in certain articles, which do have mentions of men doing less important things than they did. An example would be something like: "An important peace was negotiated (by the king's mother or wife, who is not mentioned) and then he appointed his <male inferior> (whose name is mentioned) to manage one castle for him". There are more recent studies which finally acknowledge the political roles of women in history, but this is often not reflected on Wikipedia. Peaceingalaxy (talk) 10:14, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
