Well, thanks for the star :) I don't contribute to DYK as often as used to do. When I'm not so busy, I'll try to nominate articles by others as I formerly did. I believe we should involve more prolific contributors into the process. Cheers, Ghirla -трёп- 11:31, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cookies

Thanks for the plate of cookies you left on my talk page the other day! :) I'm not sure why, but I only just noticed them tonight. I can't say I've had the experience of having one of my doctors bake me anything, but at least I can now say that I've experienced it in a virtual sense!
By the way, when I was coming here to your page, I forgot the (The Scope) part and went to User:Samir by mistake. The username has no contribution history and doesn't exist in the user creation log (or any log that I could see), but there was a message on the talk page from User:Ghoshi. When I clicked onto Ghoshi's talk page, I realised that the post on Samir's talk page seems to be a response to a question you asked Ghoshi in July. Anyway, I'm going to move their comment here after this message, but I thought maybe User:Samir should be blocked and maybe the pages redirected here since you sign as Samir and there's probably a reasonable chance that people might mistakenly go looking for you at User:Samir. The account doesn't have an edit history and I'm really not sure if it actually exists, but I redirected the user and talk pages to your userspace until you have the chance to decide what to do. Cheers, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 16:19, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, no cookies. I worked in the Medical Support Unit for the RAAF (Air Force) and a doctor there once took me to the Officer's Mess for lunch. And a couple of years ago I worked for a Nursing Unit Manager who used to cook us soup in the middle of the night. But sadly I've never worked for a doctor who has baked us anything. :(
By the way, I have a q for you. Would you class UTIs as an STD? It seems like a very narrow way to class a broad and wide infection. The actual Urinary Tract Infection article mentions sexual activity, but it doesn't define it as an STD. Then you get to the very end of the article and there's the STD template. I think the template without any explanation in the text could be a bit conusing to non-medical people. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 18:05, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for multiple edits, but I have another question...In Australia, drugs like morphine and pethidine are kept locked in a separate DD (dangerous drugs) safe or special locked cupboard and when a nurse administers them, another nurse checks the dose and counter-signs the DD book. Is it true that in Canada, the nurses just keep morph/peth in the drug trolley with everything else, give it independently and that they don't have to counter-sign for each other when administering it? Sarah Ewart (Talk) 18:24, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Your information on all fronts was very helpful. I'm going to go ahead and remove UTIs from the template and I'll try to explain it to Qrc2006. Thanks Samir, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 19:15, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Freak Accident

I'm a little bit confused about your decision on The Freak Accident to deny A7 speedy deletion. I am not challenging your authority to make that call and respect your decision. I just don't understand it. It's my goal to master the speedy deletion method, so if you have anything else you could tell me about your decision that might help, please do so. Erechtheus 19:34, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for the explanation. I did not know that there was such a dispute over A7. Now that you have clued me in, that explains quite a bit about why I have seen that category treated the way it was. Erechtheus 02:08, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

STD/STI

could you please unblock me, Samir. I truly wish to cooperate to make this template the best it can be. I will not add Hepatitis C back in, allthough i believe the debate should continue and then it should either not be returned or just permanently kept off whatever the consensus is. But i wasnt able to add crabs, had to get someone else to help me. And now i belive the page is "protected", i have many suggestions for bettering it. see the talk page. Qrc2006 04:37, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thank you very much, and yes i do agree that the information must be accurate.

Another user told me that you are a doctor. Let me ask you, can Hepatitis C be transmitted by anal-oral contact also known as Analingus and Rimming. If person A licks person Bs anus without a barrier, could they get Hepatitis C? Qrc2006 04:58, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

are you sure, well im glad to hear it, my mom allways gets mad at me when i mention ive rimmed someone, cuz i do it without a barrier as long as the person is right out of the shower, im vaccinated for A and B, and yeah i was always told the chance was so low to get C from it that it was safe. Do you know why the CDC wesbite says that stuff about risky sexual behavior and hep c with the links i provided to the CDC on the talk page.

Vandalism on my userpage

Thanks for reverting the vandalism to my userpage, with the image being swapped for that .gif - I don't understand what his/her problem was (I've never encountered the username before), but I'm guessing a sockpuppet of a user who I have disagreed with in the past. Anti-CD3

I included anti-CD3 approaches because Van Heel & West devote space to it in their very thorough review and clearly felt it was promising. That's why I referenced the list itself to their review, with specific points referenced to other sources. I cannot personally judge whether anti-CD3 induced immune tolerance is any less experimental than PEP/EPB2 enzyme therapy, of which even phase I trials still need wide dissemination! JFW | T@lk 09:15, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I reread the article's paragraph on anti-CD3. All the references (117-119) are to papers about T1DM. It is quite brave to use infliximab in coeliac, given the lymphoma risk inherent in coeliac. JFW | T@lk 19:15, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, now was that worth a Barnstar? Gratitude. JFW | T@lk 09:04, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi back at ya!

Hi Samir, and thanks for the heads up! I thought that it would be okay to close the no consensus ones, as that defaults to keep, but I'll stick to the Keep, merge, and redirect ones as per the link you gave me.

Just a quick question for my own clarification. You see, I started closing the discussion becuase I saw such a big backlog there, and I'm going up for Admin relativley soon, so I thought that it could only help. But wouldn't closing no consensus AfDs fall under WP:IAR? This isn't an attempt to still try and close no consensus AfD's, but as I say, I'm going up for Adminship soon, and worried if these closures may have an adverse affect on my RfA. Thanks for any advise. Yours, Thε Halo Θ 13:00, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My pages

Hi Samirjee, while I thank you and others for removing repeated vandalism from my user and talk pages, I do believe that all pages belong to Wikipedia Foundation and I do not own anything here, except the pride of being a true wikipedian. Rather I feel privileged to edit wikipedia: foolish or intelligent vandalism, including to my user and talk pages, are not going to deter me from my mission statement on my user page: "I am here with a mission: to contribute to realize the objectives of the dream of Jimbo Wales (the founder and the president of the Wikimedia Foundation) and his team." Regards. --Bhadani 14:59, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

However, I do believe that when the entire wikipedia is open to be freely edited, I do not mind some vandals visiting my user and talk pages to record their remarks. Such foolish remarks like Bhadani is a pimp and so on is not going to deter me from my mission. I request you to please unprotect both the pages: let 100s of vandals should come, they would find that they shall fail to kill my motivation to be around wikipedia. Let 100 flowers bloom! --Bhadani 15:32, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Marsh Stages Coeliac Disease Diagram

Diagram To Show Coeliac Disease

Hey Samir, the diagram won't be a problem at all. It will likely take about a week from now depending on when I get around to it. Its very unlikely to take more than that. If you come across any other diagrams of the disease please be sure to point them my way, as I've not heard of the disease first hand so I'll be basing it on other diagrams and my own textbooks if they make any mention of it. I'll keep you updated. Thanks WikipedianProlific(Talk) 12:06, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your lucky, I got around to it today. There may be inaccuracies in it, if there are can you let me know as I am not entirley sure of the differences between some of the 'types' of the disease, so it may need some adjusting. I assumed type 0 is the standard jejunum epithial appearance. And then went from there. I've not placed it on the article page yet as I'm not sure where you'd want it to go. Seems best for you to place it. Anyway, as always if you have any more requests be sure to let me know, although I am fairly busy at the moment but I'll get around to them at some point. Thanks. "Shooting"

You claimed that "it's being reported in all Canadian media as a 'shooting' not a 'shooting incident'." I then cited numerous examples of Canadian reports that describe this as a "shooting incident." (In other words, your statement was false.)

You then cited references to a "shooting." Well, of course there was a shooting, and of course this is being reported. I never denied that. The problem is that this term refers to the primary portion of the story (the gunman's rampage). In common usage, it does not refer to the suicide that followed. The ITN blurb doesn't present a full account of the events that occurred, so stating that the suspect died in the "shooting" implies that this was a shootout among multiple individuals.

I can't imagine why you object to the phrase "shooting incident," which generates approximately 500,000 Google hits (including dozens from Canadian sources pertaining to this exact story). —David Levy 22:21, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I object to unnecessary words. "Shooting" does refer to the suicide. The gunman shot people then himself; it's all part of how the word "shooting" is used in Canada. Your first web search picks up articles that, for the most part, talk about the "shooting" first (in the lead) then mention it as an incident. Hit #2 is titled "Politicians express sorrow over college shootings". Hit #3 is a letter to the editor. Hits #4 and #6 are Hit #1 updated (not a press document, but MUHC's website update), and Hit #5 is Hit #2 updated. For hit #7, "incident" is not contained in the text of the article (which only uses the term "shooting" in the text) but is only found the caption of the image. Searching google news (see Template talk: In the news for the URLs) finds "shooting" in more than 10 times more articles then "shooting incident". The banner headlines and lead articles of the Globe, Gazette, National Post and Star today all reference the "Montreal shooting" or "Dawson shooting" in the banner or the first paragraph of the text. None calls it the "Montreal shooting incident". A2 of the Star says "...the shooting, punctuated by the suicide of Gill, 25" NOT "the shooting incident, punctuated by the suicide of Gill..." You also quoted a Regina local newspaper story on a student group 2000 km away as a primary source, which hardly seems appropriate. I think that the term "shooting" is analagous to "shooting incident" and the word "incident" is superfluous -- Samir धर्म 22:39, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
1. Popular Canadian usage isn't the only relevant concern. People from all over the word are reading this, and it should be written in such a manner as to be properly interpreted by as many as possible. Are you suggesting that the term "shooting incident" is less understandable by Canadians than "shooting" is?
2. The reports that you cite, like our article, are detailed accounts of the events that occurred. Conversely, ITN contains a tiny blurb (without any background information or chronology), so stating that the suspect died in the "shooting" is ambiguous at best.
3. The phrase "shooting incident" generates approximately 500,000 Google hits—including dozens of reports pertaining to this exact story from such Canadian sources as CBC News, the Toronto Star, the Ottawa Citizen, the Montreal Gazette, the Vancouver Sun, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, Canada.com, McGill University Health Center and others. To you, this might seem like more that what is necessary, but I don't understand why it's objectionable (especially given my explanation that it reduces the likelihood of confusion for some people). —David Levy 22:51, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A "shooting" is a noun that is an incident. -- Samir धर्म 23:01, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To some people, "shooting" is a noun that describes in instance in which someone fired bullets at one or more other people (or one in which two or more people fired at each other). "Shooting incident," conversely, describes both the shooting and its aftermath. —David Levy 23:15, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Calling it a "shooting incident" is redundant. -- Samir धर्म 23:01, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Then why have CBC News, the Toronto Star, the Ottawa Citizen, the Montreal Gazette, the Vancouver Sun, the Leader-Post, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, Canada.com, McGill University Health Center and other Canadian sources used the exact phrase "shooting incident"? I'm not even including all of the Canadian sources that have used the term, let alone the non-Canadian ones.
The fact that "shooting" means one thing to you doesn't negate the fact that it means something else to others. Quite frankly, you're being rather selfish by declaring that only your perception matters (given the fact that the phrase "shooting incident" is no less understandable for anyone). —David Levy 23:15, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A "shooting" is an incident where shooting takes place. It's being reported as the Dawson shooting twelve times more frequently than the Dawson shooting incident. The shooting encompassed the suicide, as the shooter shot himself. Here's a quote on how the noun is used from CNN: "Canada's worst mass shooting took place in Montreal when gunman Marc Lepine, 25, killed 14 women at the Ecole Polytechnic on December 6, 1989, before shooting himself." [1]. The "shooting" clearly encompasses the "killed 14 women" and the "shooting himself" -- Samir धर्म 23:23, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You're still missing the point that the ITN entry is not a complete news report. You're citing full-length reports that contain all of the pertinent details, leaving no possible ambiguity.
When people with no prior knowledge read that two people were killed in a "shooting" (without any other information being provided), some will automatically assume that they were shot by other people. —David Levy 23:34, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's analagous to a banner headline in a newspaper. Every banner headline I've seen uses "shooting" not "shooting incident". It's really quite simple. Incident is redundant -- Samir धर्म 23:41, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We actually eat this in the United States.
1. No, the ITN entry is not analogous to a newspaper headline, because it isn't immediately followed by specific details.
2. I've already cited a Canadian newspaper headline that contains the phrase "shooting incident" (after you falsely claimed that "it's being reported in all Canadian media as a 'shooting' not a 'shooting incident'").
3. Repeatedly stating your opinion (that the phrase is redundant) as fact does nothing to bolster your argument. —David Levy 23:54, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok if we just keep this on Template talk:In the news? The points are pretty much the same -- Samir धर्म 23:58, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Talk Page Comment

Hello; you seem like someone I can trust on this. I saw this comment on the talk page for Pope Benedict XVI Islam controversy and feel it ought to be removed because it is trolling. This user has been blocked for personal attacks previously, and I believe this would be a okay thing to do, but I do not want to be accused of removing something anti-Muslim just because I'm Muslim (perhaps I really do have an sub-conscious bias still). Anyway, your opinion on what to do with the matter would be appreciated. -- tariqabjotu 22:52, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is your problem? My comment is on point; it is not trolling. Talk pages are not trolling. Anti-muslim? See --- can't say anyhting negative about them. Now, here it is again:
Perhaps the article should provide a list of recent things moslums are angry about; this might add perspective to their obvious over-sensitivities to any negative comment and their uncany ability to take umbrage at nearly every self-perceived insult. Every such event is followed by screaming and ranting in the streets and burning flags and hanging effigies and calling for 'death to this' and 'jihad to that' and claiming there will we more suicide attacks and that everyone else on earth is wrong and..... Let us list everyhting they do not like so that we can provide disclaimers at the top of everyhting we say so that we don't draw the wrong cartoon about the profit Muckmud or claim their belief system might be flawed or whatever. Good golly, cannot the Pope (or any religious leader) provide his observations about islum without enciting yet another childish, global tantrum. What happened to civilised and intelligent discussion? Can we not criticise islum? Can we not note things and provide observations about buddhists and atheists or jews or Japanese or Eskimoes or African bushmen without somebody getting his shorts all in a knot? What a bunch of over-sensitive and insecure people. Man, they gotta lighten up! Let us list all those things in the article along with all the other recent tantrum-generating events. Are there any comments?~~``DocEss 23:19, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely agreed that it was trolling, and as the rants spilled over to my talk page and back to the article's talk page, I've blocked the user for disruption. I note that it's not his first block. Take care -- Samir धर्म 23:29, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help. As a side note, I took care of another by the user you just blocked and one other incident. I'll just live with any accusations of bias that come my way. -- tariqabjotu 23:34, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I'm on the standby clerks list for WP:RFCU, and if one has to leave Wikipedia, I'm next in line to take over. Regarding the Wikiproject involving Australian football, I am the co-ordinator of WP:A-L with one other user, and although I am not a member of WP:AFL, I still do a lot of work for them, like the template for the 2006 AFL finals series article. DYK is one of my favourite parts of Wikipedia, and I have done a couple of template-runs (where I give the UpdatedDYK and UpdatedDYKnom templates to the users who did the respective things) for admins who couldn't be bothered or had to go half-way through the process. Unfortunately, until I'm a sysop, I can't do the whole process :( Cheers, and thanks again for your feedback, Daniel.Bryant 03:43, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

May I ask you what this [2] is supposed to mean? It makes me feel tlike you have something against Indian users. Badminton may have been a troll, but what makes him different from User:Ikonoblast? In short, Badminton is a troll. He was not blocked for ideological issues, but was blocked for contravening the blocking policy despite multiple warnings. I will question anyone that supports those actions -- Samir धर्म 22:42, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re User-Dhartung

In response to your note on my talk page, User:Dhartung does not have my respect. I do very much consider it a kind of Wikipedia TROLLING when someone proposes an AfD for an article out of ignorance or bias. The true spirit of Wikipedia should be to contribute, not to destroy. A better Wikipedia person would have taken the time to enhance, improve, and update the article rather than irresponsibibly nominate it for deletion. An irresponsible AfD is NOT a way to gain the respect of other Wikipedia contributors. The way to gain the respect of others is to responsibly edit and improve Wikipedia articles, or simply suggest that others do so, which is something that Dhartung do not bother to do, or take the considerate time to do, before making an irresponsible AfD. Consequently he has my thumbs down. Janniejode 18:12, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lostintherush, just check out the vandalism on my userpage by a User:Vgowda. Please block him. ---Tipu Hero 05:26, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I request the admin to take cognizance of this. Also if we compare this and this, I dont see how Tipu Hero doesnt deserve to be blocked too. Mahawiki

Hi dear Admin,

This is to bring to your notice the wiki-feud I've been having with User:Mahawiki for almost one month now. It started with the Belgaum page which went to mediation, warnings were handed out to both parties, and when Mahawiki's incivil ways continued, Admin:Bluyugen handed him a warning and then a block. Find that [3].

I do not want to turn the clock back and go through all those content disputes again. Infact, I dont want to present to you the details of any content dispute we've had. All I want to present to you is the brazen incivility and personal attacks being committed by User:Mahawiki either in the course of his content disputes or even simply just out of spite.

All the diffs(exhibiting his incivility and personal attacks) I provide below are from AFTER, I REPEAT, "AFTER". ADMIN BLUGYUEN INTERVENED, WARNED ALL OF US, AND HANDED MAHAWIKI A BLOCK.

Please find below dozens of instances of blatant incivility and personal attacks by User:Mahawiki either on me or on User:Dineshkannambadi and all Kannadigas in general. His remarks are in extremely bad taste and counterproductive resulting in undermining of the good faith efforts of the other editors to carry on editing their articles.

While I dont want to go into each and every diff and explain it, just to give you a sample of his incivility, he has made edits where, even if only in jest or sarcasm, he makes atrocious claims like, I am on a kill Mahawiki mission, that User:Dineshkannambadi is the Kannada (Bin) Laden(sic). In another edit, even if only for jest(which I certainly dont find amusing nor appreciate esp., when it comes from him), he has threatened to sue me. He has called us cultural TERRORISTS, losers, notorious, shameless etc., etc. He uses the word vandalism like one would use 'Hi' and 'Hello'.

Find all the above and much much much more in the diffs I've provided below. Whats worse is his antics are going unchecked because Admin:Blugyen who knows about our feud is on a wikibreak and Admin:Sundar whose intervention I've sought more than once, is busy with other things(I presume, in real life) - which ofcourse, I dont hold against either of them.

But wikipedia will be a poorer place if brazen incivility like this goes unchecked for weeks simply because many admins dont know about it or the ones who know are by force of circumstances, too busy to deal with it.

I request immediate and harsh action on Mahawiki.

Once again, let me remind everyone that in the links below, none of them pertain to any content disputes. I belive in dealing with the content disputes on the relevant talk pages and dont usually bring it out on user talk pages.

Infact, I have even not listed below, the atrocious claim he made a couple of days ago that I had deleted and later undeleted an article. Also not listed below is his blatant removal of {{fact}} tags I had added in a couple of articles without even clarifying or providing a citation for the claim which I had tagged. Also not listed below may be umpteen other instances of incivility and npa violations on his part that I might have missed.

All the diffs below deal purely and only with his brazen incivil comments and personal attacks not just on me, but on User:Dineshkannambadi and also highly respected historians like Mr. Suryanath Kamath et al(who have been cited in some articles by Dinesh) whom he has trashed and dismissed in the most uncivil manner possible.

Apart from this he also makes disparaging remarks on Karnataka and Karnataka politicians who he keeps claiming are oppressing and torturing Marathi speaking people in Belgaum. This is not a content dispute, this is plain nonsense and insanely belligerent language.

His incivility apart, he has made it a habit and a routine to go around all over wikipedia branding me and Dinesh as 'Kannadi' vandals bent on Kannadizing all articles we touch. Ask him if we have included any uncited material or if we has ever cited any references for his numerous claims or whether he has taken it up on the article talk page instead of on a random user talk page. His answer will be negative. And yet, that doesnt stop him from going around shouting that we have been vandalising articles!!

Anway, I dont want to veer this towards the 'content disputes' which is a whole different matter altogether. Content disputes can always be discussed and agreements reached. Let me present to you just his brazen incivility and personal attacks.

Here we go -

3RR Question

Hello, Samir. I'm back with a question for you. I reported a user on 3RR yesterday. The result of the admin decision was a block for 12 hours. When the block expired, but still within the 24 hour window, the user completed another revert to make #5 in < 24. Since then they have made 2 additional reverts but some of the original reverts rolled off the 24 hour clock. The first of these made it 4 in 24 and the second made it 5 in 24 again. What do I do now? Do I edit the old case on WP:AN3 or do I make a new case and if so, how do I deal with some of the edits rolling off the end of the cycle? Thanks --After Midnight 0001 01:26, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! Thanks for your prompt response. I feel bad now that I didn't supply you with any diffs or anything. I was just posing it as a hypothetical, and was prepared to do the work for AN3, and then you figured it all out and researched it on your own.
The Barnstar of Diligence
In recognition of you going above and beyond the call of duty and for your resourcefulness in doing so, I award you The Barnstar of Diligence. After Midnight 0001 01:56, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Samir. Can you please check out User:Zandvoort as a possible block evasion on this matter? It looks like you might not be online right now, so I'll also post this over on WP:AN/I. Thanks. --After Midnight 0001 02:12, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again. I'll start the RFCU, this will be my first one, but I think I can figure it out. My only question is that I'm not sure who to list as the puppeteer, Burneville was the one whose block was evaded, but I think the original reverts started with anaons and then Pflanzgarten. I think I'm going to go with Burneville as the other incarnations are old enough that they might not even be accessable any more due to password loss etc, but I will list them in the write-up. --After Midnight 0001 03:05, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Revise that, Pflanzgarten was blocked just 10 days ago, I'll use that as the puppeteer. --After Midnight 0001 03:13, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, per your advise, I submitted to WP:RFCU. It was deemed obvious. So, what now? Does this allow further blocking to take place based on block evasion? Should any other activity be taken, or should I just "keep an eye on things"? Thanks --After Midnight 0001 04:21, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Samir. Thanks for the note that you left on my page about blocking one of them. It looks like User:Zandvoort is now the "sock-du-jour". --After Midnight 0001 13:15, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is unfortunate. Some of the changes that he seems to want have been incorporated into the article over the months, but it appears that this user is only interested in an all or nothing approach. It is a shame, because they all do seem to know quite a bit about the topic, but I'm sure that you have seen many more of these types of circumstances than I have over time. --After Midnight 0001 13:54, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BadGut website

I saw that User:Sirprojects went and populated gastrointesinal articles with links to http://www.badgut.com (Canadian Society Of Intestinal Research) (see contibutions). A quick look at the links shows that they are to the relevant specific topics at that site, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dyspepsia&diff=79511377&oldid=79188315 and badgut seems to at least be reasonably full in its descriptions. So two questions that I think you might be better able to judge:

  1. The information whilst good, is without references (although to be fair, the webpages do offer the reader to contact the charity to be sent further information). So do they really "add infomation" to that already in the articles and merit being an external link ?
  2. I find Sirprojects' repeated descrption of "<link> Free information provided by a registered charity, the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research" awkward. I was tempted just to cut to "Canadian Society of Intestinal Research", but if this is a particular respected Canadian research funding/education body then perhaps some description of "worth" of the site should be made. Clearly as a UK GP I have never heard of "Canadian Society of Intestinal Research" nor have any idea how notable/important it might be... care to comment ? :-) Yours David Ruben Talk 22:38, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Usman Farooq

You indef-blocked Usman Farooq (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) based on some circumstantial evidence, but U.F. denies being MaverickInUrFace (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), and this is a plausible denial. I requested CheckUser but they declined (maybe I should have taken a shrubbery). What is your view on unblocking? The threatening post by MaverickInUrFace was pretty lame anyway, IMO. Valarauka has looked into this in some detail and supports unblocking; CheckUser was declined. I will unblock, if that's all the same to you, as the connection seems somewhat tenuous and the user is showing reason rather than the usual hysteria. Guy 07:47, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reg my article 3 Ds of drinking

Hi Samir,

I wrote this article 'Three Ds of drinking' #REDIRECT 3Ds but it was deleted by you. I have discussed this with fellow people who drink and they said this was true. Can you pls correct it and update if you would like to. The article was as follows

The three Ds of Drinking namely Diet, Dilution and Duration are considered to be a informal thumbrule for drinking.

Diet It is always advisable to drink after you have had your meal. But if you want to get high quickly, you can drink without having a meal.

Duration Duration is the time for which one drinks. It is common sense that if you spread your drinking time for quite a while, you can enjoy it and also drink more.

Dilution Dilution goes hand in hand with Duration. If you want to drink more and also enjoy it, start with a mild (diluted) peg and then graduadly increase the concentration.

Thanks, Senthil

Encyclopedia Dramatica

Hi,

Just wondering why on earth is it not possible to have an article on Encyclopedia Dramatica? I've discovered Encyclopedia Dramatica and Wikipedia recently, and think they are both great! But I can't find an answer anywhere. Since you apparently hold the power over it being deleted, or whatever the deal is, perhaps you can clue me in? Encyclopedia Dramatica is a pretty weird site, and looked here on Wikipedia to get some genral information on it (like I do for just about everything), but its blocked? Why? I don't understand

What shall we propose for DYK from my newest article? - CrazyRussian talk/email 04:44, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kelly Ellard

Since you've reverted the article so that it includes Reena's ethnicity I expect that you'll provide a citation on why that's important to the case. Not only that you need to word it so that the crime doesn't come across as a hate crime, or that Ellard was a racist. Do this promptly or I will revert it again. oesophagitis

hi samir, after reading one of your article and noticed that you're specialised in the digestive system, am taking this liberty to ask you a question which's bothering me for years, Is Oesophagitis curable? i have been diagnosed with that particular disease in 1982, and i have taking antacid since then, in the past i used to take some french medicines, Phosphalugel, Malox, but nowadays i take Gaviscon liquid, it does relieve symptoms but the heartburn and pain keeps coming back, prior to 1982 i used to enjoy eating chillies and hot & spicy food, something that i cannot do anymore, everytime i take the risk of eating hot food the pain gets worse. i look forward to read your answer on this issue faithfully yours. mustapha sw_londres@hotmail.com

delete/protect old username

Hi, Samir! You don't recognize me, but I was BaseballBaby in my past Wiki-life. I took the plunge and asked for a new username because of anonymity concerns. Could you, as an admin, delete and protect User:BaseballBaby and User:Baseball Baby? I created the latter account a couple of months after I registered the first to prevent impersonation – I remember seeing a suggestion somewhere to do so and it seemed prudent, so I did. If you need me to verify it by logging in as the latter, let me know and I will.

I love the BNL anecdote on your userpage! You just know Ed has used that in an ad lib somewhere, but at least you haven't been immortalized like the old lady wanting directions to the Bryant Street Theater. :-) I'm really, really bummed that they're not touring close enough to me this fall – I've seen them four times – but I have lots of buddies on barenaked.net who will send photos and phone love. (Yeah, I'm one of those BNL fans. :-D) I'm not digging BLAM, though – Rolling Stone called it "Dad rock," which had to hurt the guys, but I can't disagree too much with the label. Maybe the album will grow on me... I didn't like Automatic for the People either at first and now I love it, but I hope BNL's next album rocks instead of snoozes.

My husband and I were injured in an MVA a few weeks ago and both of us have been in outpatient PT (love cervical traction & massage – I wish I could keep doing it!), but I should be back regularly in another week or so. Thanks very much for your help! KrakatoaKatie 20:39, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again - I have another request that I should have made at the same time. I moved my old talk page to my new one as I was instructed, and I haven't logged on since I made the change. Tonight when I got here, I found that an anon IP editor recreated my old talk page with old content from my old _user_ page. I blanked it again tonight, but can you delete User talk:BaseballBaby and User talk:Baseball Baby when you get a chance? I can't believe I forgot to mention my talk pages (this is why I don't work on the floor while taking muscle relaxants!) but what troubles me more is that someone may actually try to impersonate me. I also noticed that User:BaseballBaby is _not_ protected from recreation, and given this slightly unsettling development I think it and the talk pages should all be protected from future recreation, in the manner in which I've seen other user pages and articles protected from recreation. If you can't do that, let me know and I'll scour around for a bureaucrat. Thanks again - KrakatoaKatie 08:24, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your unwarranted remark

Here's one for the One-who-cannot-be-trolled! — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 15:47, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey user, your out-of-place remark [42] is in poor taste and in bad faith. Do you know Malayalam and the meaning of the word to guess that it is obscene? Or did you rely on the opinion of two users who looked at once credit-worthy because they cried foul on somebody's user name? If that is the case, you are relying on somebody who in turn relies on ignorance ("I didn't know the other meanings for it"). I can let you know that the two users concerned have plainly refused to look up the word in a local language dictionary and never denied the fact that it is a proper name among the scheduled castes of Kerala. Ignorance, lack of receptiveness, élitism and disdain for the peripheral lives- you have been party to them. And one user who googled the word in question and found that it meant a very loose cunt in some Icelandic language epitomises the wisdom of your ilk. Kundan After Sundown 18:15, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey troll. Here's elitism for you: I don't give any credence to anything you have to say. Go away and troll elsewhere. I suggest LiveJournal -- Samir धर्म 23:13, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good for you. Happy to see that it too was removed. -- Samir धर्म 05:35, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, this was the trolling that started it: [44] Highly inappropriate, especially on an RfA. Also, accusing me of bad faith in dealing with you, when you talk about cooking the goose on a unanimous RfA? Really think that's appropriate? Add to that these niceties: "Who the hell is this guy? Haven't heard of such a celebrity as yet. I am fairly familiar with the mass media in Kerala. The pathetically written article looks like a sexed up C.V. and looks pretty trashy at places." (which is a blatant policy violation of WP:BLP and would warrant a block in and of itself) andCan you understand English? ... This would mean to anybody who can read and understand English... Be aware that I'm fully willing to take administrative action should your trolling continue. -- Samir धर्म 05:38, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You are bending policies and guidelines to suit your purpose. And you have taken my comments out of their contexts (where they were never thought inappropriate, until you unearthed them for your purpose) to chide me and brandish your power to ban. Granted that my comment on the RfA page was inappropriate, does that give you any right to pass disparaging comments on me and call me a troll and ask me to quit? Your expression of willingness "to take administrative action" is flagrant usurpation of the trust bestowed on you by the community. Kundan After Sundown 06:18, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No one is bending policy. Your edits speak for themselves. Be advised that if you continue with tendentious edits, you will be blocked under WP:BP. Consider the same to be a final warning -- Samir धर्म 06:21, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I second Samir's warning. You are undoubtedly trolling and continuing to do so you will be blocked. --Srikeit (Talk | Email) 06:45, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You resort to personal attack and you call me names. Even if you are true in your accusations against you, your wrong stands above mine. You are an administrator and you know the WP policies and you trample them down and assume that you come out clean and warn me about blocking. Sounds like a great joke. It would be a disgrace on Wikipedia if administrative abuse is allowed to continue in this vein. You can block to your heart's content, if that will hep to wash out the ignominy of your blatant abuse. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kundan After Sundown (talkcontribs)
You're a funny guy. I suggest a career in comedy. -- Samir धर्म 16:37, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Samir. I do do not think you are dealing (as an admin) with this situation in the best possible way. You have a right to feel that user:Kundan After Sundown’s remarks at the RFA are inappropriate. But there was no need for name calling. WP:NPA says clearly that "There is a subtle difference between "You are a troll" and "You are acting like a troll", but "You seem to be making statements to provoke people" is even better, as it means the same without descending to name-calling. ". Isn't it our policy to "comment on comment ; not on user"? Later you quoted a few remarks by user:Kundan After Sundown to support your claim that user:Kundan After Sundown is a troll. I think, it would have been better if you had done this earlier ( rather than doing it after it lead to a conflict). Are you sure that those remarks you quoted are violation of WP:BLP , since they are comments in the talk page and not edits in any article. (They are inappropriate, of course) Is it proper to threaten to take administrative action against someone with whom (and while) you are engaged in a conflict? If you feel administrative action is necessary, give proper (and specific) warning in the talk page of the user. It is always better to use warning templates, in its proper sequence and citing the specific reasons. You first called this user a troll, then asked him to leave wikipedia and refused to discuss and then cited reasons for you action. This RFA gave me a chance to look at the edits of User:Deepujoseph . In contrast, I see that Deepu has shown great restraint and strict adherence to policies even when he was personally attacked. As an administrator, the community expects you to set models for dealing with conflict and difficult users. Please do not create an impression of administrative abuse.(These comments are slightly modified version of my earlier comments. see the page history)Clt13 09:42, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to quote this from WP:DFTT.

  • Administrators are not empowered to block usernames for "trolling".
  • When you try to decide if someone is a troll, strive to assume they are not. Explain errors politely and reasonably; point them towards policies, the manual of style and relevant past discussions. Don't conclude they are a troll until they have shown complete inability or unwillingness to listen to reason or to moderate their position based upon the input of others. Even in that case, it is likely better to remain silent and let others conclude the obvious instead of calling someone a troll and creating even more mayhem.

and this from WP:BNTV

  • Do not insult the vandals. Most vandals are either newbies who don't know any better, or true vandals and trolls. Getting angry and insulting, deriding them, or verbally assaulting them will either alienate potentially useful future users if the former, or play right into their wishes if the latter."

Clt13 10:15, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • What a wonderful speech! I'm well aware of policy, thanks. May I add that supporting trolls is not something I would suggest -- Samir धर्म 16:35, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Well, you have to demonstrate that you are aware of policies; what you can do and what you cannot. It seems you have nothing else to say other than this claim and this action [[45]]Clt13 11:20, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for landing here. I just wanted to add in response to comments by Clt13 that some time(s) it would be in the interest of wikipedia, in the longer run, to ignore all rules, and save the Project's resources from meaningless discussion and the instruction creep. --Bhadani 15:26, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • You know how policies are adopted in wikipedia. ( after much thought, considering many possible abuses and based on consensus) If you are ignoring a guidline, you have to admit it first and justify it. We have a very clear policy regarding how to deal with trolls, vandals, impolite users, etc. You need to ignore this rule, only if someone is making use of the loop holes in the policies. In this case there was no need for it. When you talk to some one ( even to a vandal) as if you are talking on behalf of wikipedia, you have to adhere to wikipedia policies. ( That is why these policies/ guidelines have been adopted). What I quoted shows that, in this case, the action of this admin, is against our policies. My intervention was to clarify this; not to propmote trolling. If my action was promoting trolling, you can direct that criticism acgainst our policies as well. Clt13 11:20, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I hope that was an impromptu speech by Clt13. You need to check the history of this user and the articles that he has created only for disruption. He chose that username only for trolling. End of the matter. — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 15:50, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • I respect you right to have an opinion. But there is no voting going on here. It will be helpful if you say something related to the specific questions I have raised . Clt13 11:20, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • Why are you sticking up for trolling? Putting a question on Deepu's RfA about this matter was over the top. You've said your piece, now don't feed the trolls yourself by continuing to back them up -- Samir धर्म 23:47, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
          • Finally, to Clt13, if someone trolls an RfA by mocking the good faith contributions of an excellent contributor, they have what's coming to them. If they then scoff at being treated the same way, supporting the troll and clamoring they've been wronged as a result is tantamount to supporting trolling. I don't suggest that you do it -- Samir धर्म 00:02, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That clarifies it. You treated this user the same way. I saw no difference. I was not discussing the action of that user. I found you ( an admin ) no different from that user. My ponit was about the way you reacted. Just one more thing. This is a very personal opinion of an ordinary user (who , when offended, cannot threaten with blocks and bans, who has no buddies among admins to vouch for ): The damage that vandals and trolls can cause is limited to a few articles. Admins can destroy wikipedia by showing scant respect towards policies.Clt13 04:08, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh get off your high horse. You are writing here to support a troll. That is what is destroying wikipedia, but you don't seem to get it. This matter is closed and I don't want to hear your preaching any further. If you don't like it, file an WP:RfC and see who supports your opinion -- Samir धर्म 04:16, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vitamin U

Hey there... Do you really believe that the ulcers symptomatic of UC are not benifited from Vitamin U (methylmethioninesulfonium chloride, MMSC)?

Studies show that Vitamin U helps to prevents and can revert ulcer damage in gastric tissues.

The cause of UC may be debated (is it autoimmune, etc); but the symptoms can be significantly lessened by MMSC.

Please double check these links, or search a bit more on PubMed about MMSC and UC:

Request for Help!

Hi Samir,

I’m sending this message out to about 4-5 people I’ve worked with here on Wikipedia. Its not a blind carbon copy to 1000 people. Sorry its only partially wiki-related...

Basically as you probably know I make a lot of diagrams for use on Wikipedia in my spare time while studying a Biochemistry BSc (hons) degree at the University of Sussex in the UK. Next year (in my final year) I’m planning on starting up a medical graphics company. Its been suggested to me more than once that some of my diagrams are as good as, if not better than those presently in research papers and text books, so it seems like a good logical progression (and more so something I enjoy!) to start up a company producing them.

But without a reputation, and as a nameless student work will be stagnant or non-existent. So I’m desperately trying to make a small name for myself and to build a credible reputation as both a scientist and artist. So to cut to the chase what I’m messaging people about is just to say please please please, if you or any of your colleagues are publishing research articles/text books etc. and need bespoke diagrams please get them in touch, I would be forever grateful! I’m very very happy to do the jobs for free as I enjoy them anyway and the exposure would help me no end! They have nothing to lose, if they don’t like what I produce its not like they paid for it, and are under no obligation to use it. I can’t stress how helpful a diagram in a published work would be for me. I do have a portfolio of generally better work than the pics here on Wikipedia, but examples to show colleagues are those such as:

”Caeliac Disease, Upper Jejunal Mucoasl Immunopathology”

Anyway, as always if you need any diagrams done here on Wikipedia, I’m an email away! If you do by any chance know of anyone seeking a scientist/artist then please be sure to get them onto me! (My email is nick-daines<at>hotmail.com). Thanks!

I believe the decision to delete this article was made in error, so I have asked for a deletion review. Since you were involved in the AfD on this, I wanted to inform you so that you might weigh in. PT (s-s-s-s) 17:31, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Post Election Selection Trauma Deletion

I was wondering if you could elaborate on you decision to delete this article. While I agree this concept is not the most significant. However I have been studying the concept of consensus as it is understood both within WP and in other contexts. It would seem to me that consensus has not been reached if dissenting points of view have not been adequately addressed. Based on the deletion policies here, unless the article violates one of the big three then the arguments to keep an article have far greater weight than those for delete. I do not feel that there was consensus in this AfD, the keep arguments were not adequately addressed by those who wished to delete the article. Thank you for your response. Ratherhaveaheart 19:45, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ratherhaveaheart. I saw consensus on the AfD (certainly was majority), and specifically, did not see any evidence that there was substantial coverage in media and other sources. GabrielF commented on it not being an academic term, to which I add that it's not a DSM-IV diagnosis or contained in PubMed; this has not been disputed. As such, notability of the term is defined by sources that reference it, of which, the argument raised was that they were insufficient to upgrade it beyond what is commonly considered as a neologism (an argument that was not substantially refuted). Hope this explains things; you are, of course, more than welcome to call for a deletion review if it does not -- Samir धर्म 00:12, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and a question

Thanks for the welcome and tips. A question: the difficulty in creating references for medical articles, or any other article, is very important. Although the ability to create PubMed URLs using Wikipedia:Citing_sources/example_style#Medical_journal_abstracts helps, Wikipedia:Footnotes is very tedious. PUD and H. Pylori

Hi Samir - Thanks for your comments about the timeline. You did make the critical error of admitting you know something about this stuff. :) I'm writing a more detailed history of PUD and H. pylori for my dissertation, which I hope to add here once it's finished. I had a question, which perhaps you can answer. (I asked the Reference Desk, but didn't get a great answer.) Palmer's study in 1954 didn't find H. pylori in the stomach because he failed to use the silver staining technique (or so I'm told). I would like to know two things. (1) Why exactly does H. pylori only show up clearly using this technique? (At the RD I got the generic "somethings take up different stains" answer, which I understand.) (2) Would not using this technique represent a serious error by Palmer? (I.e. Were there lots of bacteria which only showed up using this technique that were known about in the 50s? Did everyone use this technique when doing histological studies in the 50s? etc.) No problem if you don't have time to give me a detailed answer, we're all busy. Thanks again for all your help! --best, kevin [kzollman][talk] 06:23, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Samir - Great! Thanks for all the details. I really appreciate it, as I'll be talking about this case in Vancouver next week (the philosophy of science association meeting). --best, kevin [kzollman][talk] 19:40, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eid Mubarak

Thanks... hope you had a nice Diwali. Eid-Mubarak! It is today, and celebrated with gusto here in Delhi. I hope to get some more DYKs for WP:Eye, with the excellent support of AED. I see you are going great guns with lots of stuff. Cheers! EyeMD T|C 20:32, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

University of Northern Colorado Moves

Samir, I've added context for the below moves. Thanks. Gdutmers 21:28, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved these to User:Gdutmers/West Campus Facilities and User:Gdutmers/Central Campus Facilities until you've completed them. Could you add a little bit of context at the top of the article (like, This is a list of the facilities at the West Campus of ....). Let me know when this is done and I will move back into the main articlespace. Thanks -- Samir धर्म 21:10, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Gdutmers. Do you think the lists would work better as separate articles or as part of the main article? Personally I think main article, but we'll go with what you think is more appropriate -- Samir धर्म 21:30, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Samir. I hope I've figured out how to communicate with you using proper Wikietiquette! :-) I assume that the person who added the lists made them separate articles so as to reduce the amount of scrolling necessary to read the main article. I agree with you that if the lists are included at all, they should be part of the main article rather than separate articles. I'm trying to decide if they are even necessary. I'm not sure that the names of buildings really have much usefulness to readers of the article unless they are attending or did attend the university. What do you think? Ryan Sugden

I wonder if you could elaborate on your reasoning for closing the above AFD as delete. Whilst I understand it is not a vote per se, I count 10 deletes and 10 keeps, plus the article meets the standard for sportspeople at WP:BIO, which makes a good case for there being no consensus. Catchpole 09:43, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just saw this posted to your page and have looked over the AFD, and I'd concur that it should've been no consensus. – Chacor 10:06, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to elaborate... but please bring up a DRV as this was a difficult call but a clear delete based on the arguments. In my opinion, the argument raised that he was a trainee at Oldham (where he started 5 times in 4 years) and all of his other starts were in semi-professional leagues was not refuted and was backed by the soccerbase link. This is the strongest argument in the AfD, as it is the only one that attempts to define notability per WP:BIO. I'm swayed by arguments on notability as opposed to determining notability based on !vote counts on AfD's. Hope this explains things -- Samir धर्म 11:26, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you. I just noticed that the article has been re-created anyway - see Ryan Sugden. I have to go now, I'll decide if it's worth DRV later tonight. Catchpole 11:55, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thanks

When I started my second editor review, I had no idea how greatly helpful it would be to me. Here are people from across the world who I've never met or laid eyes upon, taking their personal time to think about me and offer me valuable criticism and advice. And the stuff I've learnt is more helpful in real life than just on Wikipedia. This is an experiment I will never forget. I thank you most sincerely for your kindness, for helping me be a better person. I am very much in your debt. Rama's arrow 15:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
