Thue-Morse[edit]

Hi, Salix. Thank you for your correction. I originally put the name in red to be consistent with the rest of the section, putting double brackets around names of scholars who contributed in this area. Those with Wikipedia articles came up with blue links and those without came up with red links. With Joshua Cooper however, there are different people with that name who have articles in Wikipedia, so the name erroniously came up blue. As a work-around, I added an editing command to make the link come up red. Do you know the right way to handle this?

Robert Richman 01:08, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi User:Rmrichman. First have a look at WP:PROF this is the notability guideline for academics. Its quite tough and there is a good chance Joshua Cooper will not pass it as it takes more than a few publication to pass. If he does not pass then there is nothing to be done as there will not be an article. If he might pass then you could use a disambiguating name like Joshua Cooper (mathematician) and use the piped link syntax [[Joshua Cooper (mathematician)|Joshua Cooper]] that way it won't point to the wrong person. Still better would be to create an article.--Salix (talk): 04:08, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think he meets the guideline yet, and I am not qualified to write the article in any case. I cut and pasted your piped link syntax. Thanks!

Disambiguation link notification for July 10[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Raadhika Sarathkumar, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Annamalai (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hello Salix alba, could you add the documentation template to Template:Bio_icon please? The page is protected or i would do it myself (doc page already exists). The issue has been discussed on the talk page: the version by User:Tranquil Pepere has been unanimously and overwhelmingly rejected. Ergo, you protected "the wrong version." While you're at it, could you also please handle [3]. Cheers, —Ruud 13:31, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Overwhelmingly rejected". I adore the formula. Does that person say that emeritus professor of mathematics is "overxhelmingly rejected". I assure you that the contribution was a translation of the french wikipedia and made with the same protocols and rules that the english wikipedia. 3overwhelmingly rejected". British humour I presume. Sincerely.Tranquil Pepere (talk) 13:41, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Ruud Koot: I think I got the right version? It has historically been Mathematics in medieval Islam or am mistaken. Edit protection was in error, thanks.--Salix (talk): 13:45, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

While, I wouldn't go as far as to claim the article has "historically" been titled Mathematics in medieval Islam, it has been named this for the largest part of the last year or two. It shouldn't be moved without another thorough discussion and definitely not to a title containing a spelling mistake. —Ruud 13:55, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How can I acknowledge your work in my thesis[edit]

On the 26th of March I asked a question on the Wikipedia reference desk about perspective correct interpolation. In my mind, your answer solved the problem in a quick and elegant way and it is easy to verify as correct. I'm not aware of any publications that have derived the exact same formula. I would now like to include it as an appendix in my master's thesis in applied mathematics. How would you prefer to be acknowledged? I will gladly share any details on the thesis work. Hello Salix alba, do we need to add the TemplateDataHeader to the remaining templates aswell (i did the left column of high-priority templates at the VE list) or should/could a bot do that part more easily? GermanJoe (talk) 18:52, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

String operations[edit]

Many thanks for fixing the problem with "ß" in math mode in the String operations article! For a long time, I didn't know how to make the "ß" display correct, and I didn't have an idea about an example avoiding the "ß".

I didn't understand why you changed "0" into "" in the table in section String operations#String substitution. John Searl's S.E.G.[edit]

Where is Prof. John Searl's S.E.G. page? I'm sorry if i'm posting in the wrong place, as i'm a newbie as a logged-in user and couldn't find another way to ask you the following: Why have you deleted the existing page of Prof. John Searl's S.E.G. Generator??? On what authority did you did that?? My guess is you haven't even made the effort to try and understand this new and revolutionary technology... I hope you're not just small minded and can't allow something on wikipedia that you can't understand. Please, put it back! Thank you. (Dalagora (talk) 01:44, 25 September 2013 (UTC))[reply]

The pages on John Searl and his effect generator were both deleted through the WP:AFD process here and here and a previous discussion here. As the closing admin I reflected the consensus of those articles. Technically you can challenge the deletion at WP:DRV. There may be a case for recreation of the SEG page but see WP:FRINGE which is the guidance for such topics. It does have a lot of coverage in the free energy websites but to give it a strong chance a mainstream source would be needed. There is a sky news report [5] but it really needs some more reliable sources.--User:Salix alba (talk): 08:19, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but still... I have 2 issues with the deletion then:

1) So why are there pages of "Jesus Christ" on wikipedia? As far as I know, there isn't any contemporary proof or evidence that he even existed... Except for some roman historian who mentions him briefly, and that is quite a few years after his death, no one else, but the christian / catholic followers write about him. So... I could be misinformed, but feel free to correct me on that. But anyway, in my opinion, there isn't anymore proof that Jesus (or God, for that matter) really exists, than what John Searl claims...

2) Just explain why you think John Searl HAS to be a crackpot... Have you watched the movie of his life-story? Have you watched the hundreds of videos of him, people that mention his work. I agree, his claims are bold, he has no current real proof or working models because he has been systematically sabotaged!

Take a minute and think what the instituted powers, like nuclear, coal, oil and even the "green" ones, and actually hundreds of other related industries that are based on a current "proven and working model" based on the internal combustion engine, have to loose if his revolutionary technology is real? And to what measures would they go to stop him?

You think he would waste a lifetime with the same consistent story? Isn't there any BBC footage about his "levity discs" experiments in the 70's, 80's available? I'm not sure he ever says that all that has been "erased" from existence...

Well at least the sabotage has gotten good to the point that he can't event have a page in here!!!

Please just go on Youtube and search "John Searl" and "S.E.G." and watch if not all, at least most of it... His lif-estory (it's there, the full film) explains a bit of everything, from "how he came up with it", to "why we aren't all using it right now". Then tell me again you still think HE's the crackpot...

I would expect that from the "media", that (it's a fact) is ALL OWNED by those same powers mentioned above! But people like yourself...? Who, I would think, could see a bigger picture and should have a better overview of the world we really live in, and you really don't... --95.94.230.248 (talk) 15:43, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The above article kind off confuses me. On one hand its suitable but on the other hand what is the notability here? Am I missing something?--Mishae (talk) 18:38, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The relevanvt guideline seems to be Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Notability guide, Wikipedia:Notability (people) and Wikipedia:GNG#General_notability_guideline. Of these I think he passes the GNG there is significant coverage of his capture. He is really a special case as he is notable more for his capture and not his military record.--Salix alba (talk): 21:35, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

People from pages[edit]

Hi Richard,

Can you generate a list along the lines of Wikipedia:VisualEditor/TemplateData/List that tells me who is doing most of the TD work, including any templates that weren't ever listed at the TD page? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It would be kind of difficult. The List I've made just uses an api call which tells if a page has template data on it, the api call can't actually found when that edit was made or who did the edit. You could look at diff on the List to see which pages have had the template data added recently and then look at the pages history to see who added the template data items. I've had a look through the some of the more recent edits and most seem to be by users which very short edit histories i.e. < 50. I'm guessing this might have something to do with the google code-in. Most user seem to be quite good at ticking things off at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/TemplateData and the history of that is a good indication of who's done the work.--Salix alba (talk): 02:42, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think that you're right about the code-in.
So it sounds like I'll need to make the list by hand. Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:32, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback needed on using special characters[edit]

Hello. Thank you for using VisualEditor! Having editors use it is the best way for the Wikimedia Foundation to develop it into the best tool it can be.

While we always welcome general feedback (please report any issues in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product or drop your feedback on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org), the developers are especially interested right now in feedback on the special character inserter. This new tool is used for inserting special characters (including symbols like , IPA pronunciation symbols, mathematics symbols, and characters with diacritics). It is intended to help people whose computers do not have good character inserters. For example, many Mac users prefer to use the extensive "Special Characters..." tool present at the bottom of the Edit menu in all applications or to learn the keyboard shortcuts for characters like ñ and ü.

The current version of the special characters tool in VisualEditor is very simple and very basic. It will be getting a lot of work in the coming weeks and months. It does not contain very many character sets at this time. (The specific character sets can be customized at each Wikipedia, so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants.) But the developers want your ideas at this early stage about ways that the overall concept could be improved. I would appreciate your input on this question, so please try out the character inserter and tell me what changes to the design would (or would not!) best work for you.

This is the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

  • How often do you normally use Wikipedia's character inserters?
  • Which character sets are useful to you? Should it include all 18 of the character sets provided in the wikitext editor's newer toolbar at the English Wikipedia, the 10 present in the older editor toolbar, or some other combination of character sets?
  • How many special characters would you like to see at one time?
    • Should there be a "priority" or "favorites" section for the 10 or 12 characters that most editors need most often? Is it okay if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited priority set?
    • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
    • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
  • The wikitext editor has never included many symbols and characters, like and . Do you find that you need these missing characters? If the character inserter in VisualEditor includes hundreds or thousands of special characters, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should be done for users without enough space to display more than a few dozen characters?
  • Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
  • Some people believe that the toolbar already has too many options—how would you simplify it?

The developers are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed, even if this requires significant changes. Please leave your views on the central feedback page, or, if you'd prefer, you can contact me directly on my talk page. It would be really helpful if you can tell me how frequently you need to use special characters in your typical editing and what languages or other special characters are important to you.

Thank you again for your work with VisualEditor and for any feedback you can provide. I really do appreciate it.

sup and sub[edit]

I ran the bot thru the articles. Your ([^<]*) regular expression worked well. It did fail in a few cases in which there was another non sup/sub tag between the ( ). I did fix those manually. I'm not happy with how Checkwiki finds the problem cases. There are too many article without a closing sup/sub tag and not the ([^<]*) problem. So, I'll be adjusting it over the next few days. A new dump should come out this week. Bgwhite (talk) 00:03, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. From my POV it was the ... which was the biggest problem. I find it hard to motivate myself about thousands of tennis articles.
([^\[\|<]+)$$1 was good at fixing tennis articles with an unclosed tag at the end, the majority of check wiki 99.--Salix alba (talk): 10:38, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
