Bovids and dinosaurs

If you ever get the urge to write about fossil bovids, this new paper reminded me of your articles:[1] News article:[2] FunkMonk (talk) 18:25, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, presently I am focusing on extant bovids - their articles are in a very dilapidated state. I will need to study some of your awesome fossil species articles before I write my own. Suggestion noted. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 03:47, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, sadly enough, many of our articles about extant species are in worse shape than those about extinct species! So in a sense, working on those of extant ones is more important. I've long been thinking of getting aurochs promoted, though, a scary task, and I don't have the sources for it, but could maybe be a nice collaboration some day...FunkMonk (talk) 04:02, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
I love collaborations, how about starting our work on it now? As it is a bovid it is on my work list, and as you are eager to improve it let's do it together! It is fun working with editors like you. Took a close look at it, now I see why you call it "scary".Sainsf <^>Talk all words 04:08, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Cool, I guess I'll do the taxonomy part, hehe! Might not be able to go into full gear immediately, but I'll certainly give it a look soon. My main concern is that the topic is so heavy that we need a specialised book for guidance, such as the very expensive:[3] I also think all the stuff about "breeding it back" might be better off in a separate article... FunkMonk (talk) 04:17, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Right, taxonomy is often too technical for me. I am good at the rest of the parts. Just saw the book online, some have free PDFs online but this one hasn't. Not even on Google Books. Not sure what to do... Sainsf <^>Talk all words 04:29, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Just checked Google Scholar. This seems encouraging. Till we are able to set hands on this book, we may start with these sources. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 04:31, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Yep! I may also have some sources lying around that could be used (like this one[4])... If the book was on Google Books, we could maybe have requested the whole thing in the source request, I got a whole book about Mascarene birds there once... FunkMonk (talk) 04:41, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
So let's begin. I will do the first section - Etymology, the easiest too! Just for a start. What are you gonna do? Sainsf <^>Talk all words 04:45, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
I'll try to sort out the stuff about the scientific name versus that of extant cattle. Seems to be a complicated issue (take a look at the talk page)... And then I guess the taxonomic history and evolution. So you're free to take on the rest until I'm done there one day! FunkMonk (talk) 04:58, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Turns out that the article already cites lots of information from our coveted book. Looks like we need not be so hopeless then. Seems I will have to postpone work on this article, even the etymology looks complicated! Sainsf <^>Talk all words 05:01, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
No rush! I guess this is one of those articles that will be improved slowly, but surely, while we work on easier articles... FunkMonk (talk) 05:07, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Which article(s) are you hinting at now? Sainsf <^>Talk all words 05:10, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Another interesting extinct bovid could be the steppe bison... Mummies and cave art! For myself, I'll probably nominate Lesser Antillean macaw (which you also reviewed) for FAC after the spotted pigeon, since in the meantime, more evidence supporting its existence has been found... Also thinking of Giganotosaurus and a few other extinct animals. Only other mammal on my list is Homotherium, though... Do you have anything in the works (apart form your current nominations)? FunkMonk (talk) 05:26, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Steppe bison looks something new... Let me have a look at the macaw article when you nominate it! I am busy nowadays, coming here to complete the reviews I had begun and working on a few articles here and there. What do you mean by "in the works"? Sainsf <^>Talk all words 05:31, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
By in the works, I mean which articles are your next goals to improve? FunkMonk (talk) 05:35, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Nothing to do with fossils. I was thinking of nominating Bovidae and Dromedary for FAC, but only one can go just now (unless co-nominated) and I am not gonna be around regularly. Additionally, I am trying to make Good Topics out of Taurotragus and Tragelaphus. Camels are also on the cards, as is Deer. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 05:40, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Rather important and broad articles! It is both sad and satisfactory that so few Wikipedia editor's work intensely on expanding the animal articles that it can be a playground for very few editors... The bird project seems to be practically dead now, and the dinosaur project almost went extinct for a few years! And I see you're almost completely alone in your editing field... Luckily we have people like Cwmhiraeth, who edit very broadly. FunkMonk (talk) 05:48, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
That is what amazes me, I always see you, Cwmhiraeth, Chiswick Chap, Cas Liber and just a few other editors in FAC or GAN in relation to animals, birds and plants. Seems we have been assigned departments, you manage "fossil species", I "mammals", and Cas Liber "plants"! The situation is so poor that we often have to ask each other to take a look at our articles, because no one else seems interested in them. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 05:55, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, it used to be easier not too many years ago. Not sure what happened... FunkMonk (talk) 05:59, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Wikiextinction, I guess. Why don't you write on fossil Wikipedians ;D ? Sainsf <^>Talk all words 06:00, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Hehe, I kind of did once in a way...[5]
Dinosaur-related editors are becoming extinct, just like the dinosaurs... seems I will soon develop horns as I edit mammal articles and Cas Liber is gonna get all leafy! I mean we are supporting whole whorls of this encyclopedia! Gives a feel of importance. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 06:23, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Yeah... Even more reason to march on... We're creating the standards for future writers to follow, in a sense! FunkMonk (talk) 09:34, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

It is a very well known fact that Gujaratis love food! We have Jalebis when we like to celebrate something. So, here are some for you for taking time and reviewing Kerala for GA. Your good comments and help are really appreciated. Enjoy! Yash! 05:35, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Yash! Yuuuuuummmmm, they were so hot and crispy! Gujaratis do win hearts everywhere! Won't you take Kerala to FAC? It is too well-written. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 05:42, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

They surely do! The references are formatted well enough for GA status but FA will require more inputs. Since there are so many of them, with me going to get caught up in a research project for months, it will take some time unless someone else gets around it. The article is in a great shape otherwise and it can surely achieve FA status. Yash! 05:50, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Take your time. But the only worry is that many editors keep editing such important articles and spoil it too much. I hope this article is protected. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 05:57, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Me and a few editors actively review the changes so hard to miss any significant or unconstructive edit :) Yash! 06:08, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for taking it up. I am making the changes. Please let me know what to do with duplinks you have mentioned, should it be hyperlinked only once in the article?Magentic Manifestations (talk) 18:28, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

Magentic Manifestations Good. We generally link words once in the main text (can also be linked once in the lead). Duplinks or duplicate links are the repeated links which are not kept unless the word absolutely needs a link there in the interest of the article. In most of the cases we remove these duplinks. Work patiently on the article, your hard work can lead to an FA! Sainsf <^>Talk all words 19:05, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

The Reviewer's Barnstar
For taking up the GA review of Climate of Argentina. Ssbbplayer (talk) 19:06, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the GA review on the Climate of Argentina. I am really glad that the article has been recognized after I took the initiative of improving and copyediting it over many months with extensive research. It was one of the most hardest articles to edit in my opinion. It was really good that you mentioned on how I made the article easier to read; that was a major problem during my expansion. The process of identifying problems in each section in the GA review made it simplified the review process. The review was really good and quick. It is one of my greatest contributions I have done and I plan to hopefully bring more articles to GA status and FA status. Ssbbplayer (talk) 19:06, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

@Ssbbplayer: I love reviewing articles for GA criteria. And nominators like you make it an amazing process. I congratulate you and praise your efforts for Wikipedia. 2016 GA Cup-Round 2

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Round 1

Greetings, GA Cup competitors!

Wednesday saw the end of Round 1. Sainsf took out Round 1 with an amazing score of 765. In second place, MPJ-DK earned an astounding 742 points, and in third place, FunkMonk received 610 points.

In Round 1, 206 reviews were completed, more than any other year! At the beginning of March, there were 595 outstanding nominations in the GAN queue; by the end of Round 1, there were 490. We continue to make a difference at GAN and throughout Wikipedia, something we should all be proud of. Thanks to all our competitors for helping to make the GA Cup a continued success, and for your part in helping other editors improve articles. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 2 so we can lower the backlog as much as possible.

To qualify for the second round, you needed to make it into the top 16 of participants. Users were placed in 4 random pools of 4. To qualify for Round 3, the top 2 in each pool will progress, and there will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 9th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 2 will start on April 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on April 28 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 2 and the pools can be found here

Also, remember that a major rule change will go into effect starting on April 1, which marks the beginning of Round Two. Round 1 had an issue brought up in the rules, which we are correcting with this clarification. We believe that this change will make the competition more inherently fair. The new rule is: All reviews must give the nominator (or anyone else willing to improve the article) time to address the issues at hand, even if the article would qualify for what is usually called a "quick fail" in GA terms. To avoid further confusion, we have updated the scoring page, replacing the term "quick fail" with the term "fail without granting time for improvements". We expect all reviewers to put a review on hold for seven days in cases such as these as well, in order to apply the same standards to every competitor. The judges will strictly enforce this new rule.

Good luck and have fun!

Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase.
