File source and copyright licensing problem with File:Ross Degenstein.jpg

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Ross Degenstein.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 04:29, 9 January 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 04:29, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Oregon population numbers

As I and others have been reverted much of your work, here is why. First, unless you update the citations and cite where you are getting the info, the old citations remain and say otherwise. As in the text no longer matches the citation. Secondly, the one source you did provide, this one, would fail our reliable sources (RS) rules as it appears to be self-published. Now, that website does mention US Census numbers, which citations to those sources would pass RS. But, in the end, we prefer the numbers estimated by the Population Research Center at PSU as those are official numbers for the state, that they use for dividing up monies between cities, and these are the numbers usually used by the cities on their websites and on their entrance signs. Feel free to update cities with those numbers for the 2009 estimate, as no-one would object. Aboutmovies (talk) 09:03, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Please do not add unsourced or original content. Doing so violates Wikipedia's verifiability policy. If you continue to do so, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Katr67 (talk) 19:50, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

About edit summaries

Hi there. When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field. If you are adding a section, please do not just keep the previous section's header in the Edit summary field – please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you.

Please stop

This is the last warning you will receive for your disruptive edits. The next time you disrupt Wikipedia, you will be blocked from editing. Katr67 (talk) 00:27, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Let me add to this- please communicate with other editors through edit summaries, on talk pages, even on this talk page. It's hard to know why you are doing something without that. You've been asked to stop making these disruptive edits- please heed that. If you help by communicating, we can get into a discussion about why we want things done a certain way and probably suggest ways that your skills can be used constructively here. tedder (talk) 00:45, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

January 2010

You have been temporarily blocked from editing for abuse of editing privileges. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make constructive contributions. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. tedder (talk) 17:32, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
You've been blocked for making edits such as this, which insert numbers and change existing citations to imply they say something that they don't. You've been warned and asked to participate in a discussion multiple times and haven't done so. Unfortunately, the edits you are performing, even if they are done with good intent, are very disruptive, as evidenced by the number of messages from fellow editors above. tedder (talk) 17:35, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
You don't know how to what? Participate? You do it similar to how you posted this message- basically "edit" a talk page, rather than editing an article page. Communicate, then sign with four tildes (these characters: ~~~~). tedder (talk) 05:37, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Hi, I didn't see your messages until now. I don't know what you are talking about (Fred? Typewriter 8908?). Is English your second language? If there is another language you can communicate in better, I can probably find someone that can explain things to you. tedder (talk) 02:16, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

original unblock reason Ross Degenstein (talk) 01:22, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Decline reason:

I am declining your request for unblock because it does not address the reason for your block, or because it is inadequate for other reasons. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that

  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
    • understand what you have been blocked for,
    • will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
    • will make useful contributions instead.

Please read our guide to appealing blocks for more information. Jayron32 02:48, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

I think you missed the point. You have been blocked from editing, so you shouldn't be making these edits from this account or from an IP; please see WP:SOCK. I'd reply to some of your questions and comments but I'm confused, I have trouble understanding what you are saying, which is why I asked if English is not your native language. tedder (talk) 23:20, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Disruptive editing: not communicating on census numbers changes despite repeated efforts from many editors

Re-blocked without talk page access, user page deleted, talk page semi-protected

As you know, your user page was deleted. You have been blocked; indefinitely-blocked users do not have the right to a userpage. You were using it as your personal website, which is not allowed for normal editors, let alone blocked ones. You have carried on using this talk page as a personal webpage, recording the number of friends you have on Facebook. This is not what user talk pages are for. There are plenty of other websites that you could use for this purpose. So I have reblocked you and denied you access to this page. I have also protected this page from editing by newly registered, or unregistered, editors, because you have a habit of not logging in to make the irrelevant edits you want to make. If you want to appeal against your block, then email unblock-en-l@mail.wikimedia.org. BencherliteTalk 02:08, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Census population edits while blocked

Thanks for the comment on my talk page. I was not aware that you were a blocked editor. While some of the population data you have added is welcome and improves the encyclopedia, editing while blocked and using another IP address to circumvent that block is prohibited per WP:SOCK Please be mindful of that, and use the appropriate unblocking procedures if you want to have your edit rights reinstated. This is just a friendly warning that you may continue to be blocked if you continue to circumvent the policies here.DCmacnut<> 02:27, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

IP blocked

As you were evading the block (accidentally or deliberately, I don't know) by editing as 208.107.212.115 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), I have blocked that IP address and told you to use {{unblock}} to request an unblock of your main account. I have re-enabled talk page access to allow you to edit this talk page. BencherliteTalk 10:39, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Thank for re-enabled talk page. Yes, This is Ross Degenstein. Yes, I have use the IP Address at home. I work at US Census Bureau and number of population. But no Personal information. No Facebook, either. 2 years ago it is not skills. Now I knew how to. Skills sources, citation, etc. 7 months ago I made edit in all 254 counties in Texas in a months. Not you. You can go to talk to Tedder in Oregon. Rossdegenstein (talk) 11:27, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Ross, you need to use the {{unblock}} template to ask for this account to be reinstated. Just add this: {{unblock | reason=your reason here ~~~~}} and type in your reason for wanting to be unblocked. You also need to pledge not to do the things that got you blocked in the first place. Based on my recent experience with you as an IP editor, I do not believe that you were intentionally trying to break the rules, you just didn't completely understand what was being asked of you. If an administrator would be willing to unblock your account, I would agree to watch over your edits for a few months to help coach you on the rules and avoid any further trouble. Skills sources, citation, etc. 7 months ago I made edit in all 254 counties in Texas in a months. Lastweek I made edit in all 67 counties in Alabama. I read in Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline#Demographics Rossdegenstein (talk) 00:03, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Decline reason:

I understand that you are, as you say, hearing disabled, although I do not understand why that should cause your written English to be so poor. More to the point, I am not at all convinced that you understand why you were blocked, particularly as you openly admit to block evasion by editing as an IP. You need to understand why you were blocked, and convince us that you will not do it again, in order to be unblocked.--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 21:12, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

  • When you say "Lastweek I made edit in all 67 counties in Alabama", does that mean you were evading your block by using another account or editing while logged out? -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 08:47, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi Boing! said Zebedee, Oh I said "Lastweek I made edit in all 67 counties in Alabama" I used IP Address is 208.107.212.115. 208.107.212.115's contributions you see on the bottom. Long wait someone admin. My user and IP address has been blocked both. Good Overnight. Rossdegenstein (talk) 09:12, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Oh no! Still blocked never unblock. Yes, I am hard of hearing (deaf). My english language. I used the IP Address made edit in any city, county, state for number of population on census number and added historical population table. I got Email in the early morning. James B Watson has blocked 165.234.184.69 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) in six months at Grand Forks Public Library? I have four IP Addresses. Rossdegenstein (talk) 22:40, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
You see, while you are blocked, you are not allowed to edit Wikipedia even from IP addresses, and doing so constitutes block evasion. You need to stop editing altogether and seek unblock here *before* making any more edits to the encyclopedia. -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 07:59, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Even though this try for being unblocked was not successful, don't give up. Your edits show no evidence of vandalism, which would make it much harder to convince an administrator that you deserve another chance. Your edits appear to have been a good faith effort to improve the encyclopedia. However, you seem to not understand many of the rules here. This is a big deal to our community. Take a few days (or longer) make yourself familiar with Our Basic Rules (simple version).
Additionally, your initial block was the result of not using an edit summary or communicating with other editors when they had concerns, so please read Help:Edit summary and Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. You seem to be doing much better with this, based on my experience with you. At issue right now and as stated above, using an IP address to edit while your main account is blocked is absolutely not allowed here. This is called sock puppetry here, so please read Wikipedia:Sock puppetry. For any other things you may have questions about, see our help pages or ask here on your talkpage.
Do not edit Wikipedia from anywhere until you have been unblocked. When you have read and believe that you now understand the rules, just add {{unblock | reason=your reason here ~~~~}} to this page again and fill it out. When you fill it out next time, you need to show them (in words) that you now understand why you were blocked (Disruptive editing and Sock puppetry) and that you will not do it again. I again offer to adopt you as a user and help guide you through any problems if you are successful in having your account unblocked. Altairisfar (talk) 22:07, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Accept reason:

This admin has great faith in Altairisfar. Further infractions, a continuation of the same disruptive edits, will lead to an indefinite block that may well be infinite. Happy editing, Ross. Drmies (talk) 04:13, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

  • Altairisfar, are you sure you want to take this case on? Are you sure you can communicate here and get the policies and guidelines across? I think there is an awareness now of why they were blocked, and that socking is a no-no. Drmies (talk) 02:32, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I'm sure that I'd like to take this one on. I've never gone to bat for a blocked user in my years here, but I strongly believe that this one deserves another chance. If the policies aren't followed this time, they should realize that a new block will likely be permanent. Altairisfar (talk) 03:55, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Drmies! Now Ross, if anyone leaves you a message asking you to stop doing something or performs a revert/undo on any of your edits, please stop what you're doing and contact me. I'll also be watching this talk page for any changes, so that hopefully we can head off any issues before they become real problems. I'm on Wikipedia several times a day, so if you have any questions or a problem with anything just leave me a message on my talk page. I also have set up archiving for your talk page, if you would prefer not to archive it you can remove the coding that I added to the top of this page. Happy editing!!! Altairisfar (talk) 04:29, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Ross, feel free to drop me a line as well if I can help. There's lots of friendly and helpful people around--we're not all jerks, and even the administrator who blocked you is a good guy (we go back a long way). Anyway, with Altairisfar helping you out you can't really go wrong. Happy editing, Drmies (talk) 04:45, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi Drmies and Altairisfar, Thank for unblocked. Yes, I must following rules and policy on Wikipedia. If anyone send and post to my talk page for revert/undo. I understand. How I can edit to any city, any county, etc? 2010 Census is always stay and not replace until 2020 Census. I will watch this my talk page, my watchlist, etc. --Rossdegenstein (talk) 08:38, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, now you can edit all of the cities, counties, and etc. that you want. The ones you've done so far look great! Altairisfar (talk) 13:34, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Flags in the infobox

Hey Ross, you might not want to put the state or American flag in the infobox for the city, town, and county articles that you edit. The policy (WP:INFOBOXFLAG) does say "human geographic articles - for example settlements and administrative subdivisions - may have flags of the country and first-level administrative subdivision in infoboxes". So adding flags is acceptable by policy, but in practice other editors very often object to it and remove them on sight. It's up to you though. Altairisfar (talk) 02:58, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Thank for posting. EEK! I won't replace {{USA}} and {{flag|North Dakota}}. I saw in every city and town in Colorado has lot of Flags in the infobox is wrong. Not me. Who anyone edit in every city and town in Colorado. Not good. I can post [[United States]] and [[North Dakota]] in the infobox. No photos. --Rossdegenstein (talk) 13:24, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
No problem. Like I said, it is supposed to be okay to add them to settlement articles, but every one that I've ever added to an article was later removed by someone else. Altairisfar (talk) 13:57, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Dealing with vandals

Hi, Seem I don't know how to. If anyone vandalism in any page. I undo and post to any IP Address. I used the List of huggle warning. I made edit this. --Rossdegenstein (talk) 06:53, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Hey Ross, I don't use Huggle (it can be complicated), so I can't really explain how to use it. I use Twinkle for my vandalism warnings (but it can be complicated to use also). The easiest way to start off may be to just add {{subst:Uw-vandalism1|insert the name of the article that they vandalized here}} (and be sure to sign your username after the warning with ~~~~). If they keep it up, higher and more serious warnings can be found in the top row (marked Vandalism) of the chart at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. Just be absolutely sure that it is vandalism before you add a warning to their page. If you're mistaken, it can come back to bite you in the butt. The one you did was completely correct though, it was definitely a vandal. I hope this helps, if not leave me another message here and I'll do my best to help. Kirkland, WA population

I may have a conflict of interest at Kirkland, Washington, so I'm suggesting you look at http://www.kirklandwa.gov/depart/CMO/City_of_Kirkland_Profile.htm for a population estimate. Kirkland recently had a large annexation which doesn't seem to be reflected in the figures you posted today. — Brianhe (talk) 02:05, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank for posting. Yes, 50,697 population in Kirkland in 2012 Estimate from U.S. Census Bureau. 80,505 in 2011 Estimate from City of Kirkland. 81,480 in 2012 Estimate from Office of Financial Management. Next year I will see in 2013 estimate. 50,697 will change/increase to 85,000 in July 1, 2013 Estimate from U.S. Census Bureau. --Rossdegenstein (talk) 06:15, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

2012 Estimates

I just got your comment, sorry for being slow to respond I've been busy with starting a new job so I haven't been logging on recently. You mentioned Indiana and West Virginia which I will be doing along with Wisconsin, Maryland, and Maine. I won't be doing Alabama because I haven't edited any of the cities in it already, I'm only updating the cities in states that I have updated to 2010 census data because I know how those cities are formatted making my life easy. If I were to try and do estimates for states I haven't already standardized via my previous updates it would be terribly slow going because a large number of the automated edits would fail due to not finding the proper formatting. Jamo2008 (talk) 02:01, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Hey there, looking at the WV pop updates thus far, good job on the info boxes and data., However, the article space reflects a differentr count than the infop box. As WV has 55 counties, I am willing to do them. I just did Hardy County and indicated in the article space that the pop figure is based on a 2012 estimate from the 2010 census. Let me know if this is in keeping with the update. ThanksCoal town guy (talk) 15:06, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

City Articles - Website field

Please truncate the website URL into something more "pretty". For example, on your recent edit for Ord, Nebraska you should change "website = http://www.ordnebraska.com/" into "website = [http://www.ordnebraska.com/ ordnebraska.com]". If the domain is too long, then I'll use "City Website" as the text. Some people use the Official and URL templates, but I personally prefer the shorter truncated domain to prevent infoboxes from growing too wide on some URLs. • SbmeirowTalk • 21:55, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

City Articles - Reference for population estimates

Hi. You should quit adding the reference after the year on the "pop_est_as_of" field in the infobox of city articles, because of layout problems in the infobox. Instead put only the YEAR in that field and add another field called "pop_est_footnotes", see the following. (yes, I know this example has 2012 estimate instead of 2013). By the way, this is how I'm now reordering the fields as I clean up articles. • SbmeirowTalk • 21:46, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Population updates

Hello, thanks for all of your excellent work on updating population figures for all sorts of US geography articles. I just want to let you know, though, when you update the county pages with the reference http://www.census.gov/population/cencounts/mn190090.txt, make sure to update the mn part to the correct state abbreviation. Otherwise, edits like this will point to the Minnesota population listing, instead of North Carolina (in this case, you should use http://www.census.gov/population/cencounts/nc190090.txt). Thanks. kennethaw88talk 02:47, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

As above, thank you very much for your updates to the 2013 population estimates; it is a huge task and it's wonderful to see other people working on it! I'd like to ask, however, if you could leave the website entries in the infoboxes showing their actual URLs. Based on my reading of the documentation for the URL template, it appears that showing the actual URL is the preferred practice. Let me know if that's not what you gather from it. Best wishes, --Ken Gallager (talk) 13:46, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

2014 population estimate

Hello, Rossdegenstein. I saw on Minneapolis that you seem to think the U.S. Census released a new population estimate for 2014 at http://www.e.gov/popest/data/cities/totals/2014/SUB-EST2014-3.html. I can't find it there. Is this not a list of states? My Firefox gives me an error when "Minnesota" is clicked. Thank you for any help. If you prefer, this remains an open question on the Minneapolis talk page. Thank you. -SusanLesch (talk) 22:34, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Susan, Click to http://www.census.gov/popest/data/cities/totals/2014/SUB-EST2014-3.html Thank you. --Rossdegenstein (talk) 01:00, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply. Is that not a list of states? When I go there, I click "Minnesota", and get an error http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/error.xhtml. -SusanLesch (talk) 03:22, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
OK now I can read it. Switched to Safari. Thank you for your help. -SusanLesch (talk) 17:14, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Can You Confirm that All North Dakota and Washington Places Have US Census Population boxes updated to 2014?

Hi, I've been adding US Census Population templates to all incorporated places in the United States (with the help of a script I wrote). It appears you may have already taken care of everywhere in North Dakota and Washington. Is that correct? I figured I'd ask you rather than waste time on doing it myself if it's already been done. Thanks. DemocraticLuntz (talk) 21:37, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

Thank for updating. Yes, I made edit in Arizona, North Dakota, and Washington for 2014 Population Estimate. Yes confirmed. You can edit it. Wow you made edit in historical population table in all over 50 states in the United States! Good Job! --Rossdegenstein (talk) 21:53, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

Population citations

Please respect the original citation style in articles that you edit, especially those that are FAs and GAs. You should link directly to the state table, include the Census Bureau in the publisher field, and use the full name of the dataset ("Annual Estimates of the Resident Population: April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2018"), as I have demonstrated at Arlington, Washington. Alabama

Hi there, I see you worked on updating the list of cities in Alabama list with some estimates from last year. I think it's best to wait until next year to get actual census data instead of using last year's estimates (which are not very encyclopedic, they are just guesses not actual counts). There is a bot that automatically updates these lists with new numbers every census, so editing piecemeal like you have done will prevent the list from updating automatically next year. Population estimates in county articles

Please do not add unreliable sources like "World Population Review" to the estimate boxes. We should only be using estimates from the Census Bureau or state-equivalent agencies at worse. SounderBruce 22:33, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Sounder Bruce, Thanks for leaving the message to me. The U.S. Census Bureau is correct and real. The World Population Review is wrong and fake. On May 4, 2021 was released for County/Metro on July 1, 2020 Estimate. I found the 2020 Census and 2020 Estimate in Washington state. 7,705,281 population on April 1, 2020 Census. 7,693,612 population on July 1, 2020 Estimate. Less than 6,000 people have died of COVID-19 since March 13, 2020. The City/Town on the U.S. Census Bureau will be released on June 17, 2021. I remembered you. 2 years ago you revented in Lynnwood and Marysville. I visited Moses Lake, Grant County, Washington on March 13, to 17, 2020. July 1, 2021 Estimate by the U.S. Census will be released in late-March 2022 to late-May 2022. The 2020 Census will result by October 2021. Rossdegenstein (talk) 23:49, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
The 2020 estimates are practically worthless, so it would be best to hold off on updating the tens of thousands of city articles until the proper results are released in October. SounderBruce 23:00, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Hey User:Rossdegenstein, for the infobox 2020 is not considered an estimate year, only the non-decade years such as 2011 to 2019 are census estimate years. The official 2020 decade census should be released sometime this year, so please avoid using 2020 estimates, instead the 2020 decade census is what we need changed when it is officially available. Per your edit history, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Rossdegenstein it appears a lot of articles need to be restored. • SbmeirowTalk • 19:37, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
