Welcome!

Hello Rogerthat/Archive1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

Roger(?), Welcome. I suggest you ask at the Australian Wikipedian's noticeboard whether there are many others interested in a WikiProject for Australian rules football. I expect you'll get a couple of people, and User:J L C Leung from Canada is likely to also be interested as he voted for the Australian footy finals at Australian collaboration of the fortnight (it didn't get up as a collaboration, but the articles were written anyway). If you get some experienced editors offering to help, they'll be able to help set up a wikiproject. I think it sounds like a good idea, but I'm not a footy fan, so wouldn't help (but might occasionally copyedit an article). Good luck. --Scott Davis Talk 13:01, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ehem I firmly dislike your 'game' stop asking me to help it spread through this encyclopedia. Night_Bringer

Empty articles[edit]

You've recently created a couple of articles that contain nothing but category tags. Articles which contain no text other than category tags are deletable under our standards for speedy deletion, and those articles will likely be deleted by an administrator. You may wish to add some real content to these articles to prevent them from being deleted. Kelly Martin (talk) 01:45, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Football[edit]

Hi Roger, if I can call you that. I'm keen to help with the football project, and have already been doing a bit with soem of the Swans players. I'm not really happy with what you've been doing with the categories, though - I've made soem comments at the project page you set up. JPD (talk) 09:29, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Just thought I'd better let you know that I have moved AFL rising star to AFL Rising Star award so that you can link to the right place. I have fixed the pages that already linked to it. Also, when you put succession boxes, put one {{start box}} at the beginning of the boxes and one {{end box}} at the end. It looks a bit strange if you have {{start box}} before each new succession box. JPD (talk) 11:45, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

G'day Roger, thanks for your contact. I'm a lifelong Bomber fan, but have no special expertise to offer on the subject of footy. Cricket yes - you'll see my name here and there, also Australian history topics. Good luck with the project! MulgaBill 01:13, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

AFL logos[edit]

It wouldn't be hard to make some types, Essendon and Richmond can just have a black rectangle with a red and yellow diagonal stripe through respectively. Striped clothing is also pretty easy. But it will be harder for clubs like the lions, swans, eagles, dockers and maybe port power. I'll see what I can do though. DaGizza Chat (c) 12:16, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have to say - when I first read that you were starting an AFL project, I initially thought, what is there left to write about?! But now that I've had a quick look through this project page I realise that you have put a lot of thought into this, and opened up heaps of possibilities. Well done! I guess I should naturally be writing about Daniel Giansiracusa. Maybe we can have a pronunciation sound file in their for the benefit of the commentators! Wikiproject[edit]

Hi Roger, just letting you know that I removed the link to the wikiproject from the Australian rules football article, because I think it's usually considered best not to have links to Wikiprojects and other things like that in articles. Apart from that, I like what you're doing. I was glad to see those player profile link templates appearing! I'll help with the project here and there, but I've never really seen the point of actually signing up on one of them. JPD (talk) 20:03, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject AFL[edit]

Thank you Rogerthat for inviting me to the project. I'm sure I'll find lots to contribute, especially on lesser-known areas of the AFL, for example umpires. --EuropracBHIT 11:39, 19 December 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Thankyou Rogerthat for inviting me to the project. I'm afraid I don't follow AFL at all so I am unable to help. I saw your article on Bruce McAvaney so I popped in and noted that he was born in Ferryden Park, South Australia because he noted that he lived there across the road from Charlie Walsh in his childhood. This was from a book I had as a child (and still have) called the The Sportsworld Year where he was talking about the Olympics. I made the Ferryden Park, South Australia article because it is adjacent to Mansfield Park, South Australia, which is I am. At the moment I have a book with me called Australia at the Olympics and I am doing bios on swimmers at the moment, working backwards from the most recent, and creating a few more (yesterday) for the likes of Duncan Armstrong, Jon Sieben, [[Samantha Riley, Scott Goodman, and Scott Miller. I noticed that you have contributed to the Nicole Livingstone page and are probably interested in Australian involvement in sports in general, so if something is coordinated on the Olympics I would love to help - I think they are severely underrated because there is no prize money, but the standard and depth of competition is just so impressive. I have also been wandering around the cricket bios, local suburbs stuff in SA, and the Eurovision Song Contest. Thankyou again and good luck with the project. Thanks for the Invite[edit]

I'd love to help out. I'm trying to compile information on Football (all forms: Rugby, Association, Aussie, Gaelic)...to be more specific Mob Football. I'll look at what's up about the AFL and see what I can add.

Football Positions[edit]

Hey Roger. I think it would be a better idea for WikiProject AFL if we put all the positions into one article, similar to that of the Football (soccer) positions. The page is up at Football (Australian rules) positions. This page is going to need a lot of attention because I only know so much about certain positions. Normy 16:17, 23 December 2005.

Hi Roger, I've done some work on the Football (Australian rules) positions article, linking positions internal to the sections inside the article; but the 'Aussie rules team' box links HB etc. to separate articles, I don't know how to change that. Keep up the good work! Ibroadbent 11:05, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Wikiproject AFL[edit]

Hi Rogerthat, I love my footy but my Wikipedia interests lie elsewhere. I won't join up, but I'll keep making the occasional football contribution. By way of apology I have just added Warwick Armstrong to Category:Australian Rules footballers. Snottygobble | Talk 11:43, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tables conversion[edit]

I think you can save your Word document as HTML? There are a number of tools for converting HTML tables to Wiki format; see Meta:Help:Table#External_links. I notice on that list a tool for converting CSV to Wiki format - if you have access to Excel that might be an even easier option. Snottygobble | Talk 08:22, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Profiles[edit]

Sure I'll look into what i can add for some AFL personalities. I tend to edit alot of Entertainment/Television articles alot so this may suit me better. Mike 12:36, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why does Commentators cover Broadcasters? Broadcasters are 100% different and have nothing to do with commentators I believe Broadcasters are an Impotant part of AFL look at the current battle over broadcasting. Mike 12:48, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously that info needs to be added but that would take alot of time getting information together with sources etc.. That may be a project within iteslf and probably should be put together 100% before any brodcasting info is added again along with all the different state local current broadcasters too as I only know what occurs in Victoria ie. State Radio Stations which air AFL games. Mike 12:54, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Collab[edit]

Hi, mate, thanx for the invite. One of the major concerns atm with the rugby league wikiproject is the manual of style. We dont really have one. I was going to have a read through the Football's (Soccers) WikiProject and adopt most of its structure, with probably a change of colour for templates depending on how articles related to Football use colour. I'd suggest the AFL wikiproject do the same. It probably wont require much fiddling, most templates and infoboxes etc are just copies of previous ones, probably defined from Football articles. We're a relativly young project on the management front. And being xmass and new years, everyones a little slacker around this time of the year I believe. POds 23:13, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Aussie Rules Footy[edit]

Regarding adding Aussie Rules Footy to Category:Australian rules football computer games, is it Wikipedia convention to consider console games as video games in categories and articles? I would have thought that NES games would not be classed as computer games. Remy B 05:29, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tks for invite[edit]

Thanks Rogerthat. I'm not much of a footy follower, but I do keep track of high profile Australian people, so I might be able to help out from time to time. I've just added some info to Ron Casey's page (including his date of birth) as my token gesture for now. Noticed you've got the McGrath family on your to do list. I have some McGrath's in my background, but no famous footy players as far as I know. Cheers JackofOz 08:41, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gday Roger, thanks for your nice comments regarding my work with SEN 1116 and adding some articles on sports broadcasters, they are much appreciated.

Hi Rogerthat, you have been doing some great work lately on AFL. I am not too much of a compute whiz, so can you please tell me how to keep up with the number of players created for each club. Eg. Port Adelaide players[edit]

Ask me again after I've got this dispute sorted out and I actually know which club is which. ;o) Seriously, I don't think it's an important enough distinction to make in the categories, and it could confuse newbies (both to Wikipedia and to Aussie rules). Regardless of the legal situation, everyone thinks of the AFL, old SANFL and new SANFL teams alike as being Port and any article worth reading should make clear exactly which leagues each bloke played in, which clubs they played for, and when they played in them — and link to the correct club in each case. I'll have to check the Whatlinkshere for Port Adelaide Football Club every so often to make sure everything's being linked to where it should, but that won't be a problem. ~J.K. 22:41, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • AFL results in the main year events - Sorry, AFL just isn't international news. You can't accuse me of home nation bias, as I've been deleting the FA Cup and League Cup results as well (I must have done a reasonable job at avoiding UK bias since you appear to think I'm a Yank). The Red Sox thing stayed in because the Americans have been banging on about it for so long that even the British media noticed when they won, which is not something they ever do with your Aussie rules thing. The 2005 AFL Grand Final is a sporting backwater, it's about as important as the Oxford Cambridge boat race in international attention. It's not an event of international interest. Edicts from above are a growing concern for those who believe Wikipedia should be what it purports itself to be in newspapers, magazines, and to new members: a community of editors. As a community, we believe that members who have greater power should use that power to promote consensus and a neutral point of view. When an administrator abuses his or her greater power to promote self interest or personal POV against or without the consent of the community, we believe that member should lose his or her administrative or higher powers. Would you be interested in starting and/or promoting a Wikipedia:No confidence area for the purpose of demoting administrators and above who use their power to push personal POV?

In such an area, any editor could call for a show of support or no-confidence for an administrator or higher. People would sign for either support or no-confidence along with examples of the editor in question creating an edict without consensus, or a statement of why they believe the alleged edicts are in line with community consensus. Please feel free to start or add to Wikipedia:No confidence and to duplicate this message or tell other editors who want to see Wikipedia succeed. --KIMP (spewage) 19:26, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AFL Rookie Drafts[edit]

Hey Rogerthat, just responding to a message about the AFL Drafts. First of all, I have a copy of AFL 2006, which provides all the stats, records and drafts up to the end of the 2005 season, so I have no problem in adding the pre-season, the proper draft and the trades made to each draft, just as soon as I get around to making them all first!

Secondly, your question about formatting the 2003 and 2004 AFL Drafts. It's quite hard to explain. I copy the info at the top of an already-created draft in edit mode and put it in the new box. For every new entry, you put |- on a fresh line then start a new line and start it with | (in the draft's case that would be the overall draft #). Start a fresh line and put in another |. To finish that line it ends with |- (which will count as the start of a new box as well). To finish the box entirely, put |} instead of |- and the box will finish. If a certain box finishes with | instead of |-, the next line will be on the same line as the other one, so previewing these articles for mistakes is vital. So, just for an example: (if you need help just go into edit and look for yourself)

Round Pick Player Recruited from Club
Priority 1 Brett Deledio Murray Bushrangers Richmond
Priority 2 Jarryd Roughead Gippsland Power Hawthorn
Priority 3 Ryan Griffen South Adelaide Football Club Western Bulldogs

At the moment I am quite busy (because I just started Year 11) but I can probably add the rookie drafts to their respective year this weekend. I'll add it to my jobs to do list on my user site. Normy132 07:02, February 1, 2006.

Got your note[edit]

Got your note on Fremantle players, actually I'm a non-aussie soccer fan! I felt sorry for the dockers article a while back and tried to add a few bits and since then it's been on my watchlist. Best of luck with your projects though! Cheers SeanMack 14:31, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Saints[edit]

Hello (or, undoubtedly, G'day).

When I created the page for When The Saints Go Marching In, my first effort was to consolidate all the references to the song under that one name and set up redirects for all other versions of the name. Second, I created a disambiguation page, "The Saints," to avoid having to go through the Aussie rock band the Saints. My next move will be to streamline (reduce) the references to football teams.

To be brutally honest, St Kilda's fight-song is of no interest to anyone outside of Australia, and probably of limited interest in Brisbane and Perth. It is taking up way too much space in the article. The question is one of appropriateness and proportion.

On the other hand, more information can never be bad, and many articles are of only limited interest to the majority of readers. So I am certainly not thinking of wiping your work out.

I was considering transferring your addition to the St Kilda article and setting up a link to it. It appears to me that that would be a more appropriate venue for it. And anyone looking on the song page would be clearly directed to the club's lyrics. Does that seem reasonable and satisfactory to you?

Please let me know your feelings on the matter; I will do nothing for a week to give you time to consider it. Let's do this together. B00P 12:56, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have created a specialized page for sports usage, slightly editing your contribution. There is a link from the Main Article. I hope that you approve. B00P 08:24, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject AFL[edit]

Thanks for the links, I'm interested in joining. :)

I started the Chris Judd article some time ago when I first joined Wikipedia. Haven't been on the site much until recently so I'm still very much getting used to things (apologies in advance if I stuff up). Willo kenobi 02:51, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Peter Bell[edit]

G'day Roger. Normal Wikipedia style is to use the most common name, and/or the claim to fame in brackets. The idea is to make web searches go straight to him. No one calls him Peter F. Bell and no one will search the web or Wikipedia for him under that name. So I've changed "Peter F. Bell" back to Peter Bell (footballer). I suppose we could have "Peter Bell (football)". If there was a famous soccer or gridiron player, then we might have to go to middle names or "Peter Bell (Australian football)". Grant65 | Talk 03:14, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what you mean. I've moved it. Try Peter F. Bell. Grant65 | Talk 05:23, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And why did you move it back? Grant65 | Talk 10:25, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
From Wikipedia:Use most common name:
We want to maximize the likelihood of being listed in external search engines, thereby attracting more people to Wikipedia. For example, the pagename is Jimmy Carter and not "James Earl Carter, Jr."; the string "Jimmy Carter" in the page title make it easier to find: search engines will often give greater weight to the contents of the title than to the body of the page. Since "Jimmy Carter" is the most common form of the name, it will be searched on more often, and having that exact string in our page title will often mean our page shows up higher in other search engines.
And if you check Special:Whatlinkshere/Peter_Bell_(footballer), you will see that nearly all of the links to from other pages point straight to Peter Bell (footballer). Grant65 | Talk 10:32, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but is Peter R. Bell at all well known? There must be lots of Jimmy Carters in the world, but the most famous one is at Jimmy Carter. Grant65 | Talk 10:47, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, this is a tricky one. Let me think. Grant65 | Talk 10:52, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you're right. I didn't realise there was another one until you added him to the disambig page. After all we talk about Nathan G. Brown and Nathan D. Brown. Sorry for the hassle. I'll fix it.Grant65 | Talk 11:01, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
