WikiProject Outline of Knowledge status report[edit]

It's been awhile since the last update. I guess it's time to dust off the cobwebs. Just in time for the new year. Happy New Year!

The set of "Outline of" articles has grown to about 480. The ones currently being worked on are listed below. Please take a look at them to see if you notice anything you can add or improve. Here they are...

Recent additions include:

Outlines recently moved from draft space to article space:

Outlines undergoing overhaul include:

Except for Saskatchewan, all the entries above include descriptive annotations to aid in topic selection. Please add as many missing annotations to those as you can.

To assist in the maintenance (such as spotting and reversing vandalism) of the outlines and their support pages , please watchlist them. At a minimum, please watchlist the support pages:

The wikiproject page has been overhauled. It includes tasks, guidelines, and a participants list.

See ya there!

Regex question[edit]

I can't figure out how to use the "new line" code in search and replaces in WP:AWB. Everything I've tried just doesn't work.

Any help you can provide would be most appreciated. The Transhumanist 01:06, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Interoperability - Mutualink Article[edit]

I am sorry that I did not respond sooner. I was expecting comments on my talk page. I am new to this process. I do not understand the comment about my Interoperability article reading like an essay. Aren't most of the Wikipedia articles written as easays? The article is loaded with references that document the fundamental points made in the article and provide verifcation for the statements made. In terms of the references to Mutualink, they can be interpreted as "advertisements" in that they point out how one particular company has taken an innovative approach to meeting the highly complex requirements and goals of the Federal Gov. I am sure you as virtually everyone else has heard of "impossible" and/or impractical requirements made by WDC. Emergency communications is far too important a task to let this issue go unresolved. I attempted to point out how in this case, a company did in fact, meet the needs of the governement with a pracitical solution.

Please review the article once again with the comments above in mind. If you disagree, please tell me what I am missing. Telecom881 1/2/2011. Telecom881 (talk) 00:28, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia articles are not written like essays, at least not in the sense that I'm referring to. The goal of our articles is to share information that is notable, verifiable, neutral, and, perhaps most importantly, from reliable sources independent of the subject. In short, information on Wikipedia shouldn't be synthesized. It is critical to remember that we are an encyclopedia, not a publisher of original thought.
I am sorry to say that an article with as narrow a topic as this, and in such an essay-like format, will be very hard to render suitable for Wikipedia. Remember that, despite our popularity, Wikipedia has a very specific scope: we are making an encyclopedia, not a random repository of ideas and concepts.
Should you change your article such that you wish for another review, you may do so by adding {{subst:AFC submission/submit}} to the top of the page. This will resubmit the article so that it is eventually reviewed again. Respectfully, Robert Skyhawk (T C B) 03:12, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Regex newline[edit]

I didn't know about the multiline box. I'll let you know when I successfully search replace strings using newline. Thank you.

Tried newline in WP:WikEd, and it works fine as long as you click the Regex button first.

Got regex pretty much figured out in Grep, though newline is irrelevant, as the tool pertains to article titles only.

I'll keep you posted. The Transhumanist 22:51, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Article alerts[edit]

You wrote:

The Article alerts service is back up and running, thanks to a new bot. I was thinking that the OOK project would benefit from this, seeing as Outlines are routinely subject to random PRODs and AfDs. Rather than relying on Watchlists, this service would allow us to quickly see articles that are nominated for deletion, among other things.

Along that line of thought, what is the best way to get a list of all Outlines? Would it be better to use transclusions of {{WikiProject Outline of knowledge}}, or a certain category? Robert Skyhawk (T C B) 18:58, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, please move forward on this using {{WikiProject Outline of knowledge}}.

Keep in mind that I've posted a request to rename the WikiProject at Wikipedia:Requested moves. The Transhumanist 23:28, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

JavaScript[edit]

It's JavaScript I'm interested in, not Java. ;) See JavaScript#JavaScript and Java. Many scripts on Wikipedia are written in JavaScript, including WikEd. Thank you for the category tip. I found the relevant category branch at Category:User js. I've finally decided to take the plunge and learn how WikEd works, to see if outliner functionality can be added to it. Should be very interesting. You are welcome to join me in this endeavor, if you'd like. The Transhumanist 22:46, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: I just read the article JavaScript, which mostly covers implementation of the platform, hacking vulnerabilities, debuggers, etc. Now looking for online tutorials. I'll keep you posted. The Transhumanist 00:25, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've started watching/reading Douglas Crockford's video lectures on JavaScript, and I'm about halfway through Volume 1: The Early Years. So far, it's pretty easy to follow, and interesting. I'll keep you posted. The Transhumanist 02:10, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to join WikiProject United States[edit]

Hello, Robert Skyhawk/Archive 5! WikiProject United States, an outreach effort supporting development of United States related articles in Wikipedia, has recently been restarted after a long period of inactivity. As a user who has shown an interest in United States related topics we wanted to invite you to join us in developing content relating to the United States. If you are interested please add your Username and area of interest to the members page here. Thank you!!!

Request...[edit]

Please start Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Popular pages - the instructions are at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

See others at CAT:POP or WP:POPT. The department is at [1], and the department head is User talk:Mr.Z-man.

For the classifications, you can probably modify the template {{WikiProject Outline of knowledge}} to accommodate those.

Let me know what you think. The Transhumanist 14:08, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Two heads are better than one. Coordinating on the WikiProject page would be fine. As long as the objective moves forward. Please push this through to completion. The Transhumanist 23:39, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Robert Skyhawk,

The article that I submitted-re: Absorb LMS was declined, and I understand that it may have been due to a conflict of interest. Please allow me to explain by copying the link to a reviewer that I had originally informed of my situation. When I originally began the article I had been researching local tech firms and had found Blatant media- which had this killer app- Absorb LMS. I am a huge wikipedia fan and have been using it since it began and decided to write an article about them as they are known yet not listed on the encyclopedia. Then part way through my drafting of the article my situation changed... see the link below please.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Chevymontecarlo

I applied to Blatant and they brought me in and now I work there. The owners were unaware of my intention to even get them on the encyclopedia, and still are to this day, so no matter what they remain uninvolved. I wanted to be upfont and transparent as you can see by my communication as I respect the regulations, so if I should desist from attempting to submit this again then I will back off immediately. Please let me know what you think. Thanks for your time and consideration. I just wanted to have a globally used and notable app recognized- nothing more.

What would you suggest that I do?

Absorb LMS[edit]

Hello Robert Skyhawk,

The article that I submitted-re: Absorb LMS was declined, and I understand that it may have been due to a conflict of interest. Please allow me to explain. by copying the link to a reviewer that I had originally informed of my situation. When I originally began the article I had been researching local tech firms and had found Blatant media- which had this application- Absorb LMS. I am an avid user of wikipedia, and decided I'd write an article about Absorb LMS as they are well known, and have been recognized as an innovative LMS, yet were not listed on wikipedia. Then, part way through my drafting of the article my situation changed... see the link below please.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Chevymontecarlo

I applied to Blatant for employment, and started there on Dec 14- after I had begun the article. The owners were unaware of my intention to even write them up, and I think that the 2 founders are still unaware to this day, as I only did it with the good intention of having them listed along with the many other LMS's because they are used in many countries.

I wanted to be upfont and transparent to wikipedia- as you can see by my communication- as I respect the regulations. If you feel that I should desist from attempting to submit this again then I will back off immediately. Please let me know what you think. GOCE drive news[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Outline update 2011-01-18, and an invitation...[edit]

Robert,

Thank you for setting up the alerts page. That should help a lot.

As you probably know, I'm in the process of getting the outline development team back up to speed. I hope you will help keep an eye on things.

With that in mind, here's a copy of the update on the project I've been sending everyone, followed by an invitation...

We've undergone a name change: the project has been simplified to "WikiProject Outlines".

The current main focus is on increasing the availability of outlines. If readers can't find the outlines, the outlines can't help them. We need to figure out the best places to put links, and the best ways to attract external traffic directly to these pages.

While studying the link structure to outlines, I came across a navigation aid I forgot we had that you might find useful:

If you'd like to use the main page with outline links instead of portal links, set Wikipedia:Main Page alternative (outline links) as your default main page. See the instructions.

Due to the occasional sniping attempt on outlines and their support pages, outlines now have an alert page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Article alerts. Please go there now and add it to your watchlist.

Tarheel95 and Robert Skyhawk are working on a project to track traffic to outline pages. Speaking of traffic...

A discussion on outline traffic analysis has been started on the Outlines WikiProject talk page. You are cordially invited to participate. Your input is greatly needed on possible ways to increase the availability of the outlines. All ideas and feedback are welcome. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely, The Transhumanist 08:37, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: don't forget to watchlist the alert page mentioned above. Cheers. -TT

P.P.S.: how goes the traffic tracking project?

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering the barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Thank you for participating in this year's first Backlog elimination drive! We hope to see you in March.

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of March. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 50. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, we hope we can see you in March. MuZemike delivered by MuZebot 00:01, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Outline collaboration[edit]

Here's the latest addition to the religion section of Portal:Contents/Outlines. Wikipedia has rich coverage on this subject. Very interesting, especially from sociological and historical perspectives.

This is a call to all members of the Outline WikiProject and outline aficionados to help refine this outline. It needs annotations, missing topics added, and the entries in the general concepts section placed in more specific sections. Let's turn it into a beehive.

Come join in on the fun and get acquainted with members of the Outline WikiProject!

The Transhumanist 04:52, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: I had no idea this religion was so extensive or that it had so many followers. Hope to see you on the outline!

Thank you for the startup help[edit]

Hallo Robert Skyhawk,

I would like to thank you for the help with editing my very first article on Wikipedia. I am starting to translate some articles from the Serbian Wikipedia, mainly about artists and scientist from Serbia that are not widely known. Although the template is very intuitive I managed to make a lot of mistakes in the first attempt (the article on Jevrem Jezdić) since I am not familiar with Java and HTML (maybe even this statement is irrelevant). I am hoping to translate some articles first in English, and then with help of some friends to expand them to a few more languages. Once again thank you.

Regards Martijn Pavlovich (talk) 10:41, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's my pleasure to help out, and it's nice to see someone who is willing to do translations here, especially in a language that probably doesn't get too much work on en.wp. If you haven't already, make sure you visit the Translation page to learn about how translation works here. There are certain templates and processes that ensure that the creators of translated material are credited. If you ever need help, feel free to ask me on this page, or you can type {{helpme}} on your own talk page followed by your question, and someone will come by shortly to help you out. As a final note, if you're a native Serbian speaker, may I suggest you put {{User sr}} on your user page? That will tell people that you speak Serbian, which may come in handy at some point (see Wikipedia:Babel for more information about these templates). Untitled[edit]

Hello Robert,

I will appreciate your help tremendously. I am trying to work on Gutierrez' biography. I have submitted my changes, justifications, documentation, etc. Fluffermutter is making suggestions. I am incorporating the suggestions. Would it be too much trouble to take a look at what I would like to include. I would like wiki to reflect Mr. Gutierrez' artistry and legacy. Thank you so much. --Maryphillips1952 (talk) 17:41, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Robert, Are you Fluffermutter? Are you the one helping me on the biography? If so, thank you. Do you now when the changes can be inserted? I do not want to do anything wrong again. Again thank you so much. Best regards, Mary --Maryphillips1952 (talk) 17:48, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mary. First of all, I am not Fluffernutter, but rather an entirely different user who answered your help request yesterday. I can see why you might get momentalily confused with so many users buzzing around this place.
Second, I'd be happy to take a look at your work, but I'm not exactly sure where it is. Are you referring to the actual page about Horacio Gutiérrez, or some other draft you've been working on? Once I know where to look, I'll be happy to help you.
Finally, let me extend my personal welcome to Wikipedia, and let you know that I along with many other people who have been helping you this past while will do anything we can to help you establish yourself here. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 19:47, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Robert.

Fluffmutter established a page to discuss submissions to Mr. Gutierrez' page prior to inserting. There is a link on my talk page from Fluffmutter to Mr. Gutierrez' page. It seems to me someone opened a page for Mr. Gutierrez awhile back, but did not build it with a body of information worthy of Mr. Gutierrez' artistic legacy. It seems a bit odd that someone would take the time to find articles of his back injury, but not of his Emmy, Grammy nomination, discography, etc, I question the sincerity of some of the editors on this page. I would really appreciate your help. And, would be willing to pay for wiki editing tutoring, if I am taking too much of your time. I want to be sure I am following proper protocol. Thank you very much. Best, --Maryphillips1952 (talk) 23:32, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Mary[reply]

Ok Mary, I've taken a look at what you've written on the talk page and while I don't have as much background on the dialogue between you and Fluffernutter, your suggestions look solid. We should be very close to implementing what is clearly some considerable effort and research.
Rest assured that there's absolutely no need to pay for my services. I, like everyone else here, am a volunteer. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 23:42, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your help and time. It is greatly appreciated. I would like to continue to edit and expand his biography in the next few days. And welcome your suggestions. How does one insert pictures into a biography? Does one need special permission?

Hi, I changed the date of the Broadway preview date of Porgy and Bess to December 17, which is what the reference shows. JeanColumbia (talk) 20:21, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thank you. I made that edit on behalf of a blocked anon; s/he didn't mention that fact. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 20:29, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am sure that you made the edit in good faith, but editing on behalf of a blocked user, thereby helping them to evade their block, is not acceptable. In fact it is in itself a blockable offence. I am not suggesting that you should be blocked, since, as I said, I am sure you did it in good faith, but I am letting you know so you can avoid making the same mistake again. JamesBWatson (talk) 19:43, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You know, now that you mention it, that probably wasn't the best idea. I considered the edit itself to be harmless, but that does seem to violate the policy. Won't happen again. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 19:46, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Talk Page[edit]

Hello Robert, I need your help. I am sorry to bother you. The talk page with the link for Horacio Gutierrez' biography has been deleted (or I cannot find it). I have added information on his biography on his site with your help. I am afraid they will delete all my entries again if the page is gone for discussion. Can you please take a look at the website, my entries, and where the page might be? Thank you very much.--98.178.187.55 (talk) 15:14, 1 July 2011 (UTC) Hello Robert, It seems I have two accounts Mary52 and Mary1952. I did not know. Problem is solved. Thank you. Can you please check Mr. Gutierrez' website and let me know, as an expereinced editor, that what I am doing is Ok. I fear there are users and other editors that want to delete the work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maryphillips1952 (talkcontribs) 15:55, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, glad you've got your account issue sorted out. As for your changes, they look solid. You're using references, which is good, and your tone is largely neutral and encyclopedic. I'm satisfied enough with your work that if someone were to revert it for some reason I would restore it, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Have you got your missing page taken care of? Robert Skyhawk (T C) 16:18, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Robert, Thank you. I really aprreciate your help. It seems I am also Maryphillips52. I only want one account. How do I delete the account - Maryphillips52? Thank you and sorry to bother you so much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maryphillips1952 (talkcontribs) 16:24, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mary, you can't delete the other account; they never get deleted. But if you just don't use the other account there shouldn't be any problem. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 16:28, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Inserting a picture w/permission[edit]

Robert, What is the best way to insert a picture to the biography? Do I need prior approval (wiki and artist)? Thank you.--Maryphillips1952 (talk) 20:44, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To put a picture on Wikipedia, it has to be freely licensed, or in the public domain; basically, we have to be able to use it legally. Do you have a picture in mind? If so, is it freely licensed? Robert Skyhawk (T C) 20:46, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of contacting Mr. Gutierrez to ask if he had any pictures I would be able to use on his wiki site with his permission.--Maryphillips1952 (talk) 21:16, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You can feel free to contact Mr. Gutierrez, but be aware that in order for us to upload a picture, he or whoever owns the image has to release it under a free license. They can't give permission only to Wikipedia, nor can they release it under a non-commercial license. There is a page here that gives a good guide for requesting permission to use an image; ideally, the copyright holder would use the same free license that we use, which is called the CC-BY-SA. The page I linked to will explain in better detail what you should do. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 23:27, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the information. Do you think I can use one of his program pictures that appear after a google search until I can obtain another picture and permission? Are there pictures already available at Wikipedia that may be OK to use. If so, I would to see if there is one that may work? Of course, I will also contact Mr. Gutierrez to see if he approves of the picture. Thank you.--Maryphillips1952 (talk) 01:32, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To be clear, we can't upload a picture until we get permission, so unless you can find a picture that's already freely licensed (possible, but not likely), we can't upload it without permission. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 22:55, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I will wait. Robert when I googled "Horacio Gutierrez painist" .... the sentence that comes up after his birth is .."Because his canellations from the reference page. Is it possible to have this sentence not be one of the first things one sees on a google search? This was not the case earlier today. Thank you. I don't see what you're talking about; my Google search reveals, "Horacio Gutiérrez (born Horacio Gutiérrez, August 28, 1948, Havana) is a .... Muller, Alberto “Horacio Gutiérrez: El Mejor Pianista del Mundo", ..." Robert Skyhawk (T C) 23:57, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Robert, You have to google "Horacio Gutierrez pianist." It does not appear with just Horacio Gutierrez. This is what comes out of a google earch on IE. I looked at the reference and it has "{{cite news|quote=Because..." Thank you again. Maryphillips1952 (talk) 00:30, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Horacio Gutiérrez - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horacio_Gutiérrez - CachedSimilar Horacio Gutiérrez (born Horacio Gutiérrez, August 28, 1948, Havana) is a .... " Because of a back injury, the pianist Horacio Gutierrez has canceled his ...

Oh, I see. Unfortunately, Google doesn't update its results every day; it's more like every month or so. Since Wikipedia is constantly changing, Google's versions of Wikipedia articles are out of date most of the time. There's no way for us to fix that I'm afraid. Thank you Robert. I think the site reflects Mr. Gutierrez' life, work, and accomplishments. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maryphillips1952 (talkcontribs) 01:08, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Robert, Do you know if one is able to correctly use an article link I found using a school online article databse search. I can find the articles in NewsBank. When I copied and pasted the link, it worked for me, but it required login information for others. I deleted the url link from the reference on wiki. I am finding newspapers are charging for use of their archives. I paid to search for the Full text article and have a PDF file, but would like to have a link, if possible. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Best, MaryMaryphillips1952 (talk) 18:19, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think I read if you download the citation as a Bibliography, the link should work. I will try to see if this works. Any suggestions? Best, MaryMaryphillips1952 (talk) 18:44, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE drive invitation[edit]

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

Protocol to Translate English Biography to Other Languages[edit]

Hello Robert, What is the appropriate protocol to have Mr. Gutierrez' biography translated to other languaues (i.e. Spanish, German, French)? Do I need to do the translation myself and then open a new page in each of the wiki language pages? Or, is there an automatic translation process and insertion by Wikipedia. Again, thank you for your help.Maryphillips1952 (talk) 20:30, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Different Wikipedias probably have different procedures for translation, although I'd imagine they don't differ greatly from what we do here. You would have to figure out how it works on that particular Wikipedia and go from there. This would probably require that you know at least a little bit of the language of that Wikipedia, or know someone who does. There is no automatic process insofar as article must be translated by hand; we don't accept machine translations and I would imagine that most other languages don't either. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 20:26, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I have friends who speak Spanish, French, and/or German. I can have them translate the biography first. Does anyone have to approve of the translation before opening a page in another language? Thanks again.Maryphillips1952 (talk) 22:36, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would think that their "approval" process is identical to the one we have here; create the page (and mark it properly as a translation), and if it doesn't get deleted, it's approved. Robert Skyhawk (T C) 23:25, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Need for article[edit]

The state of U.S. Damns are failing. They all need to be renovated or replaced. They were almost all built 50 plus years ago. TVA is doing concrete reindorcement and internal age related repairs on our hydroelectric damns. The State of these damns would be a good article. Also it will help motivate that work as an option in the new elections jobcreation platforms.65.91.116.33 (talk) 23:00, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mystery[edit]

On September 23rd, traffic to Portal:James Bond doubled, and has stayed at the new level since then. I can't figure out what happened. Please solve this mystery if you can.

See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Portal%3AJames_Bond

Traffic to Outline of James Bond stayed the same (though it was at the higher-level already), which leads me to suspect changes made somewhere in Wikipedia.

See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Outline%20of%20James_Bond

I'd like to find out what happened, in case it reveals helpful link placement tips that can double the traffic to outlines.

I look forward to your reply. The Transhumanist 22:07, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please help fill in annotations at Portal:Contents/Outlines[edit]

Please go to Portal:Contents/Outlines' and fill in as many missing annotations as you can, even if it's only one or two. Every little bit helps!

The annotating of the entries on Portal:Contents/Outlines is nearing completion.

Annotated entries look like this:

  • Basketball – team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules.
  • Canoeing and kayaking – two closely related forms of watercraft paddling, involving manually propelling and navigating specialized boats called canoes and kayaks using a blade that is joined to a shaft, known as a paddle, in the water.
  • Cricket – bat-and-ball team sport, the most popular form played on an oval-shaped outdoor arena known as a cricket field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard (20.12 m) long pitch that is the focus of the game.
  • Martial arts – extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development.

Entries needing annotations look like this:

The links to the country outlines don't need annotations (they are listed by region).

Even if all you can do is one or two, the support will be greatly felt. Many hands make light work.

Thank you. The Transhumanist 00:33, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
