I'm sorry they've gotten to you too. It amazing people will spend more time criticizing an article than it would have taken to clean up themselves (e.g., grammar et al). Contributor's apparent conflict of interest

An article about a company, Envision EMI, LLC has been repeatedly and substantially modified by an individual with an apparent conflict of interest. I have reverted some of his edits and re-added content with a request to discuss further edits on the talk page. In the past few days he has again removed content that in my opinion progressively erodes the content. For example, this edit reduces content about legal allegations, and the edit summary suggested the information was adequately covered in a later section. The contributor then further reduced that later section here. In another example, the contributor has two or three times removed, without discussion, a well-sourced statement by a former employee that goes to the heart of the legal allegations. ("She said the company extended the enrollment period during 2008 to capitalize on the public's excitement about Obama's inauguration.")

I asked the user on April 9 to disclose whether or not a COI exists and have not received a response. He continues to make what appear to be NPOV edits. Details can be found on the talk page here.

Since I've been trying to work with the user for a period of several weeks, perhaps I am too close to the situation. Thanks for taking a look. -- btphelps (talk) (contribs) 15:30, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Frederic Chopin

Hello. I am seeking assistance in resolving this matter. If you review the entire talk page for the Chopin article, you can see that the issue of whether the lead should refer to Chopin as Polish, French, or some combination thereof has not been settled. I have attempted to revive the discussion, but it has devolved into personal attacks. Can you help me with an anonymous anti-Semite

Hi. I left the following messages for JRosenzweig yesterday. However, I now see he has not been active since the 20th. So I am asking you as another bureaucrat if you can look into it. Thanks:

this is the ofending edit. I realize that when it comes to anonymous users there is very little one can do, nothing if it is an internet cafe. But I also know in some cases anon IP addresses can be traced to a private service or someone who controls access and can identify the offending individual and take appropriate action.

I have a pretty thick skin and don't care whether the offnsive talk is kept, struck out, or reverted. But I think this individual has exhausted his or her right to use our talk pages to offend. Are you able to find out if it IS possible to identify an actual individual and stop them?

Gibraltar Case Comments

I just wanted to bring to your attention a few things on the Gibraltar case.

1. When I was having problems I said some regrettable things, which I have apologised for, if you still feel a topic ban is appropriate then I'm not going to argue about it. I just make the point that bans and blocks are supposedly preventative not punitive. I made those remarks whilst in a bad place, they haven't been repeated and they're out of character. Now that I am a lot better is it still appropriate?

2. The assertion that the self-governing status of Gibraltar is an "opinion" not a fact. Sorry but I cannot accept that remaining in the case. Gibraltar is self-governing, it is a fact that the Spanish editors could not dispute. Instead they have tried to use a combination of synthesis and original research to try and minimise the status in the article. Their motivation in doing so is based on Spanish nationalism toward Gibraltar, where it is portrayed as a British colony on stolen Spanish soil. Those comments are only serving to buttress Spanish nationalism to skew the POV of the article not to achieve NPOV. I think you're being incredibly naive if you feel those remarks are helpful in steering the dispute, I can see those remarks coming back to haunt you in various nationalist disputes.

3. When this case was started, I couldn't participate fully as my father was ill and another editor was hospitalised. The evidence produced by a number of editors who've effectively held the article hostage was directed toward removing editors they disagreed with by topic bans; you'll note that I didn't propose of suggest any blocks/bans/sanctions against individuals. Effectively what you're proposing is to remove one side but leave the other intact. You're rewarding editors for baiting others into uncivil remarks.

4. In reading your comments I can only conclude you have apparently disregarded the workshop. In the workshop there was case of RHoPF hounding editors, walls of text being put up to derail discussion by Ecemaml, non-apologies such as "I'm sorry you were offended by my joke" not to mention examples of bad faith and uncivil remarks:

[3] activity, obstinacy, discourtesy, incompetence at communication, and nationalism form a demonic combination
[4] "Gibnews' rottweiler" repeated [5]

[6] I get a sense of "if I'm going down I'm taking you with me" here.
[7] So that is three untruths in the same section from you, Why are you telling untruths here, Justin?

5. In the workshop, the editors were lobbying to have my conduct examined more fully. I would still welcome that.

6. This was never an arbcom case, there had been no previous attempt at long term solutions. I can only note my bitter disappointment that arbcom would punish one group of violators while allowing another group of violators to go free without even a token slap or even have their conduct examined at all. Particularly an editor who apparently delights in teasing and tormenting those with temporary mental problems. I've seen this editor hounding people for years and I can't believe he is going to get away with it again.

The solution you're proposing might reduce conflict, well if you ban only one side then what's left can violently agree on skewing the POV of the article. What it isn't is a long term solution, I did propose something like this some time ago [8], it would be more workable. Justin talk 09:50, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Yes, "unknown lizard A/B" are both those common skinks you always see. Yeah, at the "unknown insect" (first photo) does look like a crane fly, but it could possibly be a scorpion fly - Thats what I would've thought. --JamesDouch (talk) 02:44, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Note re Lar/Polargeo

The situation between Lar and Polargeo, similar to the situation between Lar and Stephen Shultz is escalating. Here is the sequence of events:

  1. Polargeo adds some views to the uninvolved admin section.
  2. Lar moves these and adds one of his own views.
  3. Polargeo reverts this, accidentally removing Lar's view.
  4. Hipocrite returns Lar's view.
  5. Lar move's polargeo's view again, and threatens to block Polargeo if he returns his view.

Lar was asked to stop removing views on his talk page and instead take a lower-drama action of noting his problems on the page by me, seconded by Thparkth.

This is rapidly spiriling out of control and needs emergy Arbcom intervention to prevent further disruption. I have asked both Lar and Polargeo to stop. Perhaps the individual who choses to stop first should be rewarded, as opposed to losing by default. Just a thought. Hipocrite (talk) 14:25, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

I am fairly stupid. I've been on Wikipedia for a while and still don't understand the whole place. There are still things that I am discovering.

One is what you mentioned.

I think that Finland is preferred to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland

When using diffs, one has to use a URL (http....). So how do I do the following hypothetical example.

...this editor is a ___ when he or she did this http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Finland&action=historysubmit&diff=364995480&oldid=364936557

What should I actually do to get that padlock like you mentioned? Do I cut and paste that diff then manually change it to http://secure.wikipedia.or then the rest? WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Hungary Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. What I've noticed at DYK the past couple months (this is an issue on everyone) is that everyone takes the hooks right at top that are verified, rather than trying to clear the backlog, and as a result there are articles from nearly 3 weeks ago still hanging around. Yes, I see you're making preps for the queue, which is good. I just don't see the fairness or point in promoting a hook added the 31st when there are ones so old still sitting there. One more thing: some of your DYK image protection was too short - it takes time for the set to get to the main page, +6 hrs, +some admins (like me: ) might swap queues. I usually protect for 3 days (on en.wiki. Can't protect on commons). Jerome Tiger DYK

I nominated this article for a DYK, but unfortunately I was off-wiki when a problem arose with the hook being edited out of the article. I notified the author about the DYK nom, but apparently he didn't monitor the situation, so unfortunately the hook problem was never rectified. I see that you disapproved it.[12]. I was wondering if it's too late to salvage this DYK? He's a well known Native American artist, and I think this problem is fixable. If the first time it was published in the US was before 1978 and it was published without a copyright notice, then it is PD. I would just strike the license and tag it as whatever the Commons equivalent of {{subst:nld}} is. Thank you for telling me that the article about Kaja Bordevich Ballo was so successful. Unfortunately I doubt if I can contribute that way in future. The next time I edit any Scientology article at Wikipedia Scientologists will probably get me banned from editing those articles permanently. I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong as nobody can read and understand all the complex Wikipedia rules but fighting the Wikipedia justice system is sometimes frustrating and very difficult. Don’t try and fight Scientologists here unless you have supporters behind you.

I don't need a break, I need justice. I don't think the arbitration against me was just, partly the decision was unjust because no Wikipedian can possibly read, understand and learn all the rules. Further the decision was unjust because the decision was taken overnight when I was asleep before I had time to prepare a proper defence. I found out that I would face arbitration in mid evening, I made a preliminary start at a defence and decided to sleep over it before working out my defence properly. The following morning the decision had already been taken.

After a report to WP:AE when the behavior pattern continued after being informed of site policies, the user received a warning from Sandstein (talk · contribs). We have reviewers for a reason but you should have the courtesy to wait till its filled. DYK should be a nice quiet area to work in but many avoid it like the plague because it's amazingly hostile to newcomers. Here's the problem: I have no idea when a prep will be "finished" beforehand; it may take minutes, it may take hours, and it only takes minutes until it's moved to the queues, where a problem becomes horribly hard to check and solve. If your expectation is that I refrain myself from performing quick fixes on issues that others may miss (and do miss) and be around at the precise moment you're done filling the prep, I'm afraid we have different interpretation of what courtesy is. Then again, I don't really see how and what any of my edits have affected in your editing, other than that you may have had a minor edit conflict for a couple of seconds - which comes with the office. Just for the record, it's the usual practice to use the {{inuse}} template when filling the queue. It's not compulsory but if you don't use it others are inclined to make their own additions as you have discovered Rlevse. The "unwritten rule", if you like, is that if you don't use the template, you are inviting others to help you assist with the update. Hope that helps clarify things. Apart from that, I would just like to add that I very much regret any impression you may have had Rlevse that DYK is "hostile" to new contributors, I think we all appreciate the assistance but sometimes the regulars forget to mention that. I was hoping perhaps that an initial tactful intervention might prevent tempers getting further frayed, but as it appears that hope was misplaced, it might be best if I bowed out of the picture as I have no desire to take sides and potentially exacerbate the situation. If there really is a behavioural problem here, I think that will become clear enough in time, right now it just seems to me this is a fairly minor thing that has perhaps been blown a little out of proportion and I think it would be best if everyone just tried to put it behind them. While on user:Dahn to discuss an issue he had with my DYK nom of Juan Jose Carbó, I noticed your conversation above the one I started and felt we had similar experiences with this editor. I felt that he was a bit insensitive to my nom and on my talkpage in these series of DIFFs where he basically admitted he doesn't look at the full nom (to verify hooks) and seems mainly focused on commenting "on the problems as they show on T:TDYK" when he "has a nom". In essence, I told him that he had twice taken me to task on the talkpage and that he should treat other editors' noms like I am sure he wants his noms treated. He didn't see it that way and the conversation rapidly went downhill with him reverting our comments on his talkpage. I don't know if language plays a factor for this editor but he doesn't seem to realize that he should be "more helpful" on the the DYK nom page versus actively looking for issues. The better editors usually "improve" noms when they can and only leave a direct comment when the nom needs serious rework. The best ones use the template to come to the editor's talkage and discuss the issue in private. I know this because I have earned 20 DYKs in the last two months from when I first had an article nominated. I really agreed with one statement you made about the DYK nom page being almost a select club. If you're "in", you're made like flint. Not, and your noms can languish. I was trying to contribute there until I ran into a wall. This experience with Dahn is not good either but I don't know what can be done because I don't know if just our two experiences would matter. Still, his relevations on my talkpage do seem to show a bias. I feel that if you're going to look at noms, an editor should do so from an WP:AGF attitude that you will do your best to improve the nom if it's workable, the hooks and then approve the nom. ----moreno oso (talk) 20:01, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Simply because there are too many noms with pics for us to use all of them. On the queues I do I try to use a very diverse set of pics for the lead DYK. If you want to know why yours was one I dropped it was because the people are all far away and you can't see them well in the small DYK frame. Actually, I would like to ask you an administrative question. Many of the hooks that writers submit aren't so interesting or catchy. Many times I suggest an alternate hook. Stephen Brackstone

With regard to the removal of Stephen Brackstone at WP:DYK, I'd like to make it clear that the phrase "taken off" was referring to the substitution of the player and as such the ref does support the hook. This is a common Brit Eng expression for substituting a player (examples that help clarify this are this and this) and for me this misinterpretation is no justification for the removal of the article from the list. Disagreements happen all the time on wiki. It's inherent in the process and I've had my own DYK run ins, but I still enjoy it. DYK miss

I just saw that I overlooked my DYK notification and that you deleted the nom. The hook was actually properly cited by the closest subsequent reference, which cited several consecutive sentences. But there is still the busted ref, number 1, that is used twice. It renders a "server not found" error and I don't think it should be in DYK in that state. May I ask what would be the standard or basis required or observed by the Wikipedia community in placing the photo of a US Naval Academy alumni beside the list, in addition, for an alumni not so included to have his picture also placed beside the list. It would help a lot of people researching on the subject matter to have the picture of the mentioned alumnus right there on the article itself, it is a short list after all and the picture will just be small for which the space beside the table is ample enough to accomodate. Ok thanks I really appreciate your comments and will do as advised, btw I just checked the article's page again List of United States Naval Academy alumni (legislators) and the list of names now run quite below the row of pics on the side admitting perhaps the placement of two more pics without running below the list of names. I hope this request for one more pic may be given due course by the Wikipedia admins, sysop such as you and the rest of the Wikipedia community. Thanks so much, I'm learning to appreciate the quality and amount of collaborative work that goes into every article on Wikipedia. Update balance

I notice you seem to have prepared a few updates recently with more than four bio hooks. An update should never have more than four bios, unless it's absolutely unavoidable (ie, nothing but bio hooks left). Given that there are plenty of verified hooks at Suggestions ATM, it's not as if there aren't plenty of other hooks to choose from.

And BTW, don't forget to choose a funny/quirky hook for the last slot - I've just noticed a few so-so ones lately, although I don't know whose updates they were. Gatoclass (talk) 05:00, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 June newsletter

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were Ian Rose (submissions) (A), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader), Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) (C) New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion.
