Conservative Judaism article merger proposal

It doesn't seem right that the main link to Conservative in the 'Jew' template goes here, rather than the more general Masorti article. In fact, I'm not sure that it needs to be a separate article at all. I propose merging this article and Masorti into one main article on Conservative/Masorti Judaism, with smaller individual articles about the Conservative/Masorti movement in each particular country. This would help address Rick86's question above, too. Any thoughts? Nomist 11:25, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

I for one fullheartedly agree. Conservative Judaism is 'traditional' Judaism, and in that sense doesn't differ from Masorti Judaism, which is based on the same principles (with a few minor differences). In that sense I also find it a good idea to have smaller individual articles about the Conservative/Masorti movement in each particular country. I am willing to do my share in changing this and writing a few articles. Rick86 13:40, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

I have an objection to this proposed merge. Your argument, in theory, make sense. But in practice I believe that most English speaking Jews would describe "Conservative Judaism" as the more general movement, and use other terms - such as "Masorti" - for more regional specific movements of Conservative Judaism.

If we wanted to strictly describe Conservative Judaism through its institutional structures, one would end up defining a little known and poorly funded group - Masorti Olami - as the main point, and everything else would be underneath it as sub-sections. To wit:

• Masorti Olami - The World Council of Conservative/Masorti Synagogues
  • United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (North America)
  • The Masorti Movement in Israel
  • The Assembly of Masorti Synagogues - Conservative Judaism in the United Kingdom
  • The Neolog Movement in Hungary
  • (Whatever the Conservative Jews in Argentina call themselves, I don't know.)

In practice, people use the term "Masorti" to refer speficially to the Conservative movement in Israel, and less often, in the UK. Now, many Conservative Jews believe that Conservative Judaism in North America should rename itself as Masorti. No less a figure than Rabbi Elliot N. Dorff holds this way. But these suggestions haven't taken hold.

Nonetheless, I do not disagree with your descriptions. I think the best of both worlds would be to slightly rewrite the introduction to make your points clear, e.g. "Conservative Judaism is 'traditional' Judaism, and in that sense doesn't differ from Masorti Judaism, which is based on the same principles (with a few minor differences)." Bad faith deletion of new article on Shefa

Eliezer (under a new name) is trying to delete articles on real organizations. The claim he made on the Shefa Network page is false and disingenuous. The Shefa Network is a real group within Conservative Judaism, and in fact is already larger than many organizations that Wikipedia already has many articles on.

The Shefa Network already has several hundred members, they have their own journal, their own website, they have already had two major conferences, and two more conferences are planned soon. Yet Eliezer and a friend of his are trying to delete its article? Eliezer has refused to even discuss the issue on the article's discussion page, despite the fact that I am trying to engage in civil discourse. Eliezer and his friend haven't even tried to see if the group exists.

Note the timestamps; they tried to delete the article within minutes of its creation. They obviously didn't even try to read the group's official website, or read its academic journal. They certainly never went to any of Shefa's conferences! They also never joined Shefa's e-mail list and asked anyone about the group. Look, attempting to delete a page without even trying to ascertain the facts is clearly against Wikipedia policy. And doing so while refusing to engage in dialogue is editing in bad faith, by definition.

If someone somehow still doubts that this organization exists, I can arrange for an interview with its founder, or its journal editor, webmaster, and members of this organization who have been to Shefa's academic conferences. RK 14:09, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Jewish Eindhoven

Ik weet niet meer voor de volle honderd procent of deze rabbijn nog steeds rabbijn is van de Joodse gemeente in Eindhoven. Ik heb de informatie hierover uit een bijlage die volgens mij vier of vijf jaar geleden in de lokale krant, het Eindhovens Dagblad, stond over de verschillende religieuze gemeenschappen in Eindhoven en omgeving. Ik kan me herinneren dat er toen een uitgebreid interview met deze rabbijn in stond over de Joodse gemeenschap in Eindhoven (hij kwam zelf uit Tilburg). Misschien heb ik de bijlage nog ergens thuis rondslingeren. Ik moet echter eerlijk bekennen dat het goed mogelijk is dat hij inmiddels geen rabbijn meer is van de gemeenschap hier - ik ben er meer uit mezelf vanuit gegaan dat hij dat nog steeds is na die paar jaar. Ik zal kijken of ik erachter kan komen of dit nog steeds het geval is. Voor zover ik weet is de Joodse gemeenschap hier in Eindhoven nog steeds actief, dus er is neem ik aan wel een rabbijn actief.

Hoi Daniel, ik heb het nog eens opgezocht en inderdaad: 1) zijn naam is niet Wiersema maar Witsema; 2) hij is niet de rabbijn maar de gemeenteleider en degene die de synagoge beheert. Ik denk dat voor officiële diensten een van de verschillende rabbijnen van het NIK aanwezig is, maar zoals ik het nu lees (ik heb eindelijk het krantenartikel bij de hand genomen) is Witsema niet de plaatselijke rabbijn. Poeriemgrap

Het was ook niet zo`n geslaagde poeriemgrap (naar mijn nederige mening) veel mensen zijn eringestapt en er is niet duidelijk gecommuniceerd dat het om een grap ging (vooral omdat het zo serieus gebracht werd); je artikelen zijn trouwens verder van een geweldige kwaliteit, als ik zo vrij mag zijn. --Isolani 15:32, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

broken sentence in the NIK page

Hi,

I am now translating the Nederlands Israëlitisch Kerkgenootschap page to Hebrew. Since you contributed a lot to this page, I was wondering if you could help me figure out something about it. There is a sentence that seems broken to me: "Because of its proximity to Amsterdam, with more than 15,000 Jews the center of Jewish life in the Netherlands, Jewish Almere is steadily growing." Can you fix it or explain it to me?

What the sentence means is the following: Almere is a city located near Amsterdam (basically attached to it). With Amsterdam having a large Jewish community (15,000), there is a steady flow of Jews leaving the city for its suburbs or the cities located nearby. Therefore Almere is seeing a boost of its Jewish community, due to Amsterdam Jews moving just outside Amsterdam city limits. I hope that answers your question! - Rick86
