Just a note to thank you for un-suspending the RfC

I have no interest in kicking Archtransit while he's down, and I think it's unfortunate that there are those who DO have an interest in doing so--but I thought suspending that RfC was a spectacularly bad move, for the reason you cited, and I'm glad you reverted that action. I'm no fan of WikiDrama but I think the average user has a right to speak, and lately I've noticed several instances where an admin has slapped an archive tag on a debate because they didn't like the direction it was taking or because it was "generating more heat than light". To me, that's a reason to keep a discussion OPEN, not to close it--because if it's really generating that kind of emotion, clearly it's an issue that needs to be brought out into the open and discussed. (The BetacommandBot situation springs to mind.) Anyway--thanks. Gladys J Cortez 23:06, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

DNFT

Redvers, do you have a reason for calling MickMacNee a troll? I've noticed several times that you've replied to his comments, or reverted talk page discussion with "DNFT" (Do Not Feed Trolls). Calling someone a troll when they are not is really not helpful. Carcharoth (talk) 00:53, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Okay, first things first. This talk page is a working area for the betterment of the 'pedia. Since it has my name on it, I control it quite rigorously and reserve the right to refactor, ignore or remove as I see fit any threads that are not contributing to the page's goal.
That said, an error on your part – I've noticed several times that you've replied to his comments, or reverted talk page discussion with "DNFT". No reverts of him. Not one. No multiple uses of DNFT, just one, when I removed an unproductive thread in its entirety, and the reason was simple: what was productive about this type of comment? What did it want to achieve? (And one other: when he lit a further fire in the David Shankbone thread on a noticeboard; again no revert).
If a person is displaying a monomania over a subject, is starting dozens of threads in different places about that subject, is told not to and responds by creating a further page, that this further page is worded as an attack page, that their discussion deteriorates into posting pointless things like this in order to get some sort of response, I think we can be sure that they are trolling.
I know that you agree with his aims (I hope not his techniques) but I don't think you're that short of allies that you need to defend such behaviour. It's really not helpful. ➔ REDVEЯS knows how Joan of Arc felt 10:33, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough. Those were the only two I noticed as well. Sorry about that. Still don't think using the 'troll' word is helpful. It (to use a phrase you used) "pours fuel on the fire". Carcharoth (talk) 11:56, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

ANI thread change noted

FYI see this. East718 removed a comment, and your "both" comment now appears to apply to me, though I was the one saying El C should wait, so I noted that East718 removed his comment later, thus changing the apparent meaning of your comment. If I've misunderstood this, please let me know. Carcharoth (talk) 10:07, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes, you're correct; I never meant to suggest you were one of the ones threatening a punitive block. I was specifically appealing to El_C and East718 and the ec nightmare that was that thread changed this, for which I apologise. ➔ REDVEЯS knows how Joan of Arc felt 10:22, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

MedCab case

Hey, you set this up but I've heard nothing from you on the article's talk page. Did you want to be part of this mediation? Discussion is at Wikipedia talk:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2008-02-04 Code Pink, please acknowledge acceptance of mediation on Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2008-02-04 Code Pink. Thanks. At first I thought you created the case but weren't a party for some reason. Duh! Not sure where I got that idea. Please review my disclaimer of COI on the article's talk page.--Doug.(talk contribs) 04:33, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

  • Hi Doug! No, I'm not part of the dispute. I was asked by one of the listed parties to mediate the dispute [1] since I had, some time ago, reason to stub (or delete? can't remember) the article when it was turned into an attack page, but mediation isn't my thing – I have neither the patience nor the skills required. So I set up a MedCab request for them. My name is in the history and on the talk page of Code Pink, but from quite a long time ago and I continue to know nothing about the subject nor have more than a passing interest in it. Thanks! ➔ REDVEЯS knows how Joan of Arc felt 08:37, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

List of Roman Catholic dioceses in Great Britain

First, I left an edit comment there, up on the third edit after undoing your edit and deacons. Check the edit history again. Secondly, please see the category discussion. It's all tied in together. The decision was to keep the category so everything else with it gets restored. I appreciate your concern. Do you have a problem with the concept behind the revert? If you do, please come to the discussion for the "Category:Roman Catholic dioceses in Great Britain. Thank you very much. Benkenobi18 (talk) 11:58, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

No, I saw your edit, and I didn't think it was vandalism at all. Your edit was very sensible. The only reason I reverted was because of the decision to keep the category "Roman Catholic dioceses in Great Britain". Once that category was restored, then the disambiguation page was no longer appropriate, and the list was restored in it's former condition. Anyways, I felt it would be clear reading the edit summary at the top what I was trying to do. Again, I thought your edit was entirely sensible, and I apologise if you thought otherwise.Benkenobi18 (talk) 12:15, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Highfields School

I don't undserstand what I did wrong in listing Highfields School for AfD – that is what I was told to do (it ought to be speedy deleted). It is entirely non-notable. Has WP become en extension of teh Yellow Pages all of a sudden? Please let me know what I'm meant to have done or help rather than prevent discussion about removing this bog standard comp from this encyclopedia. 86.145.215.26 (talk) 20:20, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

You need to give detailed reasons. You can post these on the talk page of the article – I'll pick them up from there. You might want to read Wikipedia:Guide to deletion as well. You also might want to note that precedent on Wikipedia says that all schools are notable, alas, alas. ➔ REDVEЯS knows how Joan of Arc felt 22:30, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I see you now gave reasons (specious, but reasons nevertheless) and an admin came along without needing to read your mind and made Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Highfields School for you. Where people are voting keep, because all schools are notable (I'm told). Please remember that powers of telepathy are only given to every third admin, so when you get one who can't x-ray your mind for what you were thinking, WP:AGF. Hi, could you please consider undoing your deletion of this userspace draft, which the user has been working on after I salted the page in article space. Please see User talk:CIreland, User talk:Eva Evangelakou, [2] and Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2008 February 22 where the editor was advised to redraft in userspace. Of course, it is overly promotional at the moment and utterly lacking in sources (and should technically be on a subpage), but this is a good faith and cooperative user and a possibly notable subject. Thinking Allowed

Aha! Was wondering if anyone would notice ;-] Best wishes, Flapdragon (talk) 15:35, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

BR Totems

I noticed that you created the image and I'm trying to find the HEX number for the colour so that it can be added to routeboxes. Do you happen to remember which one you used here? Thanks. Ravenseft (talk) 21:36, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

The totem images are all on a gradient – specifically because totems date from before Pantone and hex numbers, and in reality often show amazing variability between each totem. I just have LMR totems left in my collection now (but have a new kitchen and bathroom thanks to the others!) and the remaining ones really don't have much in common, even allowing for the fading from bright sunlight. The original colours were hand-matched: a current paint colour was chosen, then a dye that would resemble it after firing on vitreous enamel was chosen to match it. So the best that can be done is an approximation. When I was previously asked about this, I found a file online with a good approximation of the colours here but I haven't since checked to see if this is still there, let alone still accurate. All I can say is that the colours I used aren't wrong – they were taken from actual photographs of actual totems actually 4ft from me – but I don't warranty that they are right!
If you want a quick-and-dirty version of the colours, look at the boxes on Template:Bigfour. I did my very best to match the colours there with the average of the totems. They're perhaps a tad too dark (the totem images for the BR template are perhaps a tad too light) but are as close as I could get with a couple of hours of work. ➨ REDVEЯS dreamt about you last night 22:24, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I think I've cracked it with the help of the link you provided above from which I extracted the RGBA codes which could be converted to HEX. Not great, but I think it has worked out ok – see here. One final question and excuse my ignorance, but where (i.e. region) was the black BR totem used? Ravenseft (talk) 21:58, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Western. Some strange experiment (or possibly fault that made it past managers?). Five stations had them. It might be worth noting that there were two SR greens – and – this difference is probably clearer here. There was also, I'm told, light-blue with yellow markings for stations that served Butlin's holiday camps – presumably places like Filey Holiday Camp station. But now I'm just complicating matters! :o) ➨ REDVEЯS dreamt about you last night 22:49, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
How interesting, I'd never have imagined that there could be such variety. All the more reason to replace the "Beeching Blue" which is so often used in BR routeboxes. Thanks also for Filey, I'd never given that one much consideration before. Ravenseft (talk) 20:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

My recent edits

I apologize for any misunderstandings or issues caused by my closing of AFD's. I forgot one step, my bad. Please see the current discussion on my talk page and also, are you implying that you are banning me from closing AFD's? If you look at the one's I closed, they were all either relisted and closed with a keep, or just closed with a keep. There is an exception with one article, which is also discussed on my talk page. Dustitalk to me 16:53, 12 March 2008 (UTC) Please note I am not being disrespectful or biting you, just asking some questions

Hi Dustihowe! No, you're not banned from closing AfDs. I'd just rather, for the time being, you chose not to. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Neofuturism was a mistaken close; for me, after a lifetime it only seems that long... here, quite an obviously mistaken close on several levels. But we've all got to start somewhere, and starting with a fuck-up is not unusual nor a problem. I'm still here, as living proof!
I reverted every other close you made due to the speed you made them. Even after so long here, I can quite often spend half an hour staring at one AfD with 5 keeps and one delete, knowing that that one delete argument makes the most sense. Voting is evil, so AfD is not a vote. A simple count of heads will not work – ever. I reviewed three of your closes and all of them were slightly too complicated to close with a minute's consideration. On that basis, all had to be reopened. And two had to be relisted as the discussion needed extending.
AfD can be an intricate and complex experience. It has ways and means that are perverse and awful to deal with, but eventually make a degree of sense. You'll get there! Keep contributing to discussions and trying to spot the pattern in the closings. There is one, but it's very hard to see! Nope. As the writer of WP:CAIN, clearly I don't believe in that as a "policy". I confess I didn't pay much attention to the dates – I just saw this and this from them, plus no further useful contributions. I would say you didn't decline the block by adding this comment, you just added a comment. To decline a block, you need to remove the entry, not just comment. Do you want me to unblock the account on procedural grounds? I will if you want. Or you can. Either way. ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 21:52, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
If you could unblock, I would appreciate it as I would prefer to avoid even the slightest appearance of impropriety. I am all about blocking vandals, however this editor appears to have stopped after receiving the {{uw-vandalism4}} warning on the 8th. The editor who made the AIV report contacted me on my talk page; apparently he was not aware that WP:USER and WP:VAN allow editors to clear their own talk page, however I still do not understand why this was reported to AIV seven days after it happened (so much for "must be active now"). Thanks for your time, Kralizec! (talk) 23:04, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Also, declining AIV reports has been a bit ... tricky for me (I have only been an admin for three months). People can get real bitchy when their AIV reports are just deleted, so I always try to instead leave a comment on AIV as to why I did not block. Sometimes the editor replies with more information or diffs that help to otherwise explain an unclear case of vandalism. If AIV is slow, I will often just leave a note on the editor's talk page, however when AIV is backlogged (like it was today), I just put a quick one-line comment on AIV itself. Do you have any suggestions on a better way to do it? Thanks, Kralizec! (talk) 23:11, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Unblocked. Yeah, people do get bitchy about having their reports removed. Ignore them. There's no other choice – the page is so busy and so vital, wrong reports or unactionable reports disrupt the flow of the page for everybody. I only leave reports up with a note if I have reason to believe action will shortly be required – and note that I will be stalking the vandal's contribs for XX mins. Leaving a note to say "no action taken" or the like just causes the next admin to take action. And the report would never be cleared until someone took action. So remove the report entirely with a descriptive edit summary (for your own use, in case the reporter complains days later) – rm 127.0.0.1 – stopped after 4th warning or rm Someusername – only warned once or rm Someotherusername – not edited for 9 days. If the reporter complains, you have right on your side – the instructions on AIV couldn't be clearer if we tried, and we do say that incorrect reports are subject to being removed (as are complex reports, which AIV is not equipped to handle). ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 08:33, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. Please explain why you deleted the page – the MFJ is an important civil rights movement in London. I was going to develop the article but you deleted it too fast! Please restore it. Paki.tv (talk) 13:27, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

WP:CSD#A7 – an article on a group or organisation that failed to assert notability for its subject. Hang on! It's not an advert... I was just trying to start a stub. It's not a commercial product in any case, so no selling is involved. I took a break from page-creation, and page is deleted by the time I got back to continue... an hour later! It is notable software, even if only useful to a section of Apple product users. Your article, written in glowing sales language, also failed to assert notability for its subject. With respect to your editing experience, you seem rather hasty at deleting. I'm not sure you followed my point: You deleted the article while it was still in the early stages, so it's rather early to be pointing out the lack of notability!

Please revert to avoid the inconvenience of my doing so (I'd have to research that), and have a look at the finished page. If you have any further comments, please copy to my talk page, thanks. Centrepull (talk) 19:46, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

(WKP = wikipedia – You appear to be an active editor, I've seen your edits and signature about a lot. Impressive, given the size of Wikipedia).

Not hasty in deleting at all. It's called speedy delete for a reason. See WP:CSD for more information. It's quite simple: an article needs to assert notability from the start (not difficult) and to not be advertising from the start (also not difficult). Note that the period of deletion until your complaint was over an hour: plenty of time to do both. And the amount of time from putting the article in your user space until you complaining again was three hours – again, plenty of time to do something. ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 19:53, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm an agent of the Council of Europe, in particular from the CODEXTER department, and I like to add to your page some more information about the questions of what is CODEXTER and its work, projects and legal sources.

Thank you for any advice.

Block of User:Huggle

I'm not quite sure how a block was necessary here. He probably would have stopped making the edits to AIV/UAA if he was told to. Your thoughts? Feel free to reply on Huggle's talk page, or here. - Rjd0060 (talk) 19:58, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

How would he be told to? He left a very clear message that things left on his tool's talk page would be ignored and his main account is inactive. Exactly when would he have stopped? When he read the email an hour or day later? ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 20:04, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
I would have attempted it on his talk page. The message that was on his talk page (which is now removed, btw) I took differently. If he's sitting at the computer testing Huggle, he'll get messages left there. Thanks for commenting though. - Rjd0060 (talk) 20:06, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
And if it hadn't been an admin who spotted the disruption? Or if I'd been scared off from commenting and let him get on with it? How much rope? And I know the message has been removed – clear evidence that it shouldn't have been there in the first place and that Gurch knows that. If the test edits from the automated tool will stop, then the block can go, as I said originally. ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 20:09, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
It is your decision. All I asked for was clarification from you on the block, which you've given me, and I thank you for. :-) – Rjd0060 (talk) 20:10, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Let me clarify a bit, he was testing a serious issue with Huggle that involves the noticeboards. The bug is, any user reported at UAA, wouldn't get warned and would be reported automatically to AIV. Which has cause a large number of false reports, I know I've made a few. I even pointed to bug out to him. He may not have any other option but to test on the noticeboards. --ÐeadΣyeДrrow (TalkContribs) 20:16, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Then he needs to say what he's doing in advance and not have a talk page clearly marked "out of bounds". He could also, at any point, have told me this himself. Gurch hasn't. The block – only 3 hours – stays until he decides to communicate. It's all what we're about here – communication. Automated editing tools are abused often enough as it is, without a tool owner behaving as if they don't have responsibility for their edits. ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 20:21, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, that's how Gurch is, he aint the most communicative guy. So I said it for him. Felt like I had to considering I pointed out the bug to him. --ÐeadΣyeДrrow (TalkContribs) 20:27, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
There's still no need to make multiple test edits to high-traffic pages. And he just has to say he won't do so in future. But so far, silence. ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 20:34, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

advice please

Dear Redvers,

I'm hoping you can offer some advice here. You declined to speedy delete this, but this guy is completely circumventing deletion review. (Previously when he posted this stuff on talk pages it was deleted because it was seen as a circumvention of the deletion review process, for example, see this.)

I can't reference old talk pages of the now-deleted articles because they were deleted along with the articles, but the consensus of many editors was that the sources he is using are primary, foreign, or mis-represented. Please see this for full explanation and an egregious example of one mis-representation. Despite numerous requests he has failed to come up with secondary sources -- if he had them it would be fine.

It seems he should be held to the same Wiki ideals and guidelines as we do everyone else? Thanks, Renee Renee (talk) 22:30, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

You need to send the article to WP:MfD (whilst it is in userspace) and explain the problem. Point out where else it has been, if it has been in articlespace or talkspace. Point out the problems with the piece, clearly and concisely. If the community decide to delete, there is then effectively a ban on recreating it since it can be deleted anywhere as a repost. Details of how to nominate are at WP:MFD#How to list pages for deletion. ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 22:36, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. Much appreciated. Renee (talk) 23:12, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Mel Robertson

Hi:

I'm new here on Wiki, so maybe I've done something wrong, but I'm just wondering why my page for American Filmmaker, Mel Robertson, was sent into speedy delete twice? She's a notable filmmaker, who has an academy award for producing and screenwriting awards as well. please let me know how I can fix this...

Thanks!

mp —Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxpeirpont (talkcontribs)

Did you say that up-front in the article? The main reason articles are deleted is for not asserting notability. People often write articles about someone who may be notable, but then don't say why. Editors here are not omnipotent, so you have to provide all the information up-front ("Mel Robertson is an Academy Award-winning producer and screenwriter" rather than "Mel Robertson is a producer and filmmaker" or the like). You also need to provide a reliable, third party source confirming it. You also need to write in an encyclopedic tone, ensuring that you're writing for us, not writing for Mel or advertising something. ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 08:38, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Diff Deletion

Per this diff. I'm not sure if it works here (it should), but there is some user js I found at the Wikimania wiki that allows you to modify Special:Undelete to have a Select All and Invert All button added next to Restore and Reset. And all boxes should be checked by default, allowing deleting diffs like the aforementioned a lot easier. You might give it a lookover. I can't seem to find it again at Wikimania but you should be able to pull it from my personal js here for use in yours if you so desire. --Charitwo talk 12:08, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for that – I'll take a look. The main issue here was actually not the ticking and unticking. I'm naturally nervous of having to delete a page with more than a thousand or so revisions in order to remove one of them – the servers can take a huge hit. Oversight has the benefit here of removing one without temporarily remove lots. ➨ REDVEЯS is a satellite and will be set alight 12:27, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

If possible for you, could you please add these important informations to the article that you have protected? There seems to be lots of confusion going on, and therefore these citations are aiming at clarification. I would suggest to add this at the end of paragraph "2008 unrest in Tibet#Violence in Lhasa" Thanks --Rédacteur Tibet (talk) 20:58, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

According to GCHQ, the UK government communications agency, agents of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, disguised as monks, triggered the riots. It is therefore speculated that the riots were deliberately calculated Beijing.[1]

According to Ruan Ming, the CCP staged the incidents in Tibet to force the Dalai Lama to resign and to justify repression of the Tibetans. He declare : « The demonstration on March 10 was meant to be peaceful. You can see from the pictures that the demonstration was all monks. The CCP arrested some of these monks and killed them. The killing angered some young Tibetans. By March 14, the Tibetans could no longer stand the killing of innocent monks and protested ». Ruan thinks the events in Tibet are aiming to influence world opinion. « The Dalai Lama has always proposed a peaceful solution to Tibet issues and has won the world's recognition. With all that in mind, the CCP has framed the Dalai Lama for having 'carefully planned and stirred up the event.' This is exactly like how the CCP framed Zhao Ziyang for the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989 and accused Zhao of 'splitting the Party and supporting unrest.' The Dalai Lama had already said he would resign if the unrest continued. The Dalai Lama is influential globally and if he really retired, the CCP could gradually push and label the Tibetans as terrorists like the Xinjiang independence movement. This will give the CCP an excuse to ignore Tibetans appeals and to further repress them ».[2]

No. Discuss changes on the talk page, come to a consensus, use the {{editprotected}} template to attract attention. Do not attempt to short-circuit this process in the midst of people edit-warring over an article: that's why it is edit-protected in the first place. ➨ REDVEЯS paints a vulgar picture 21:06, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

In theory, these are all now tagged together sensibly, with the exception of one I wasn't sure of (that didn't come up on the CU either, so the seed of doubt is sown). And there's consensus in the making that DWhiskaZ, and thus his socks, is now banned for Wikipedia and can thus be reverted on sight. ➨ REDVEЯS paints a vulgar picture 20:47, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
The edit that Mahmoud123 originally made to Muhammad article was based on a misunderstanding of sources, unawareness of the structure of the article & a unique and creative (but false) WP:OR synthesis. That's to me a fingerprint. All other users listed there were created with the single purpose of defending that edit and went right away to Muhammad article and defended him. To me, it is either him or an obedient meatpuppet of him (he might have called someone). It is however much more probable that he has simply used another network connection. By the way, User:Mohun might be him as well. Please see Talk:Muhammad#Mahmoud123's edit (Again) --Be happy!! (talk) 21:18, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
