Pietermaritzburg railway station[edit]

Why did you Pietermaritzburg railway station to Pietermaritzburg train station with a comment of "reverting sockpuppet", when the article has never before been at the title Pietermaritzburg train station? How can you be "reverting" a move when you move the article to a title it has never had before? Similarly, how in this edit can you claim to be undoing John Snow II's edit? He just wikilinked railway station which was already there; then in your supposed "undo" you changed "railway station" to "train station". Please explain. - htonl (talk) 10:14, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Htonl, it was an error, and I apologize. I was doing a mass reversion of hundreds of counter-to-policy multi-account edits by one person, and I was a bit too zealous on that one. I highly appreciate you reverting and politely bringing it to my attention. Thank you. Red Slash 20:36, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the article has used the "zation" spelling since its formation, so I would at gunpoint have to say it's probably originally in American English. Red Slash 20:24, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
kicking myself as I almost mentioned that. No, the 'z' is an alternative BritEng spelling, see Oxford spelling. I see editors make this mistake frequently. I'm a dual national by the way, from Miami but living in the UK. Dougweller (talk) 04:53, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal with teeth[edit]

Something tells me this is going nowhere. The biters do not want a process with teeth to bite back. I am about ready to give up. Sad, because I really think the hostile reception at New Page Patrol, and to a lesser extent at Articles for Creation, is the main reason for so few new editors. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:16, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, Aymatth2. We need some way of knowing whether or not an edit has been made by a newbie, and then we need to be gentler with them. I started a long time ago, when I could see the direct impact my edits were having online; without that feedback, I don't know how anyone gets involved with WP Red Slash 19:30, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Since you are obviously interested in this matter, would you like to help draft the proposal, at Talk:Hillary Rodham Clinton/April 2015 move request? Some things that you have said in the various discussions so far about the absence of a consensus to have this title in the first place would be useful to have there. April 2015[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Billion, without good reason. They need to have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. RM?[edit]

I noticed that you recently moved the page Military intervention against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to Military intervention against ISIL and listed RM as the reason why. I am wondering where this requested move you cited is because there isn't one on the article talk page. - SantiLak (talk) 03:53, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here you go, SantiLak! Red Slash 04:26, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your closure of RM[edit]

Your recent closure of the RM relating to ISIL was entirely inappropriate. There was no consensus on the page and policy was not strongly in favour of move which is what you have stated and which is simply your opinion. You should have joined the discussion to express such an opinion, rather than closing the review. For more information see WP:RMNAC. Please revert the moves. Should you decide that that is not possible, a move review will be submitted. Regards. Mbcap (talk) 07:33, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'll stand behind that closure, Mbcap, though a move review is absolutely on the table for you. I'll explain in depth why I made the decision that I did, and why I'm pretty sure there indeed was a policy-based consensus to move.
First, two policies are important here: WP:CONCISE and WP:CONSISTENT. Nobody seriously disagreed that WP:CONCISE applies; a policy being 100% applicable is typically a killer argument in a move request unless another policy can be shown to be in conflict with it. Therefore, the opposers would've needed to give some policy-backed reason, and they pretty much all appealed to WP:CONSISTENT. Did it apply, though? Is the ISIL title really less consistent? No fewer than nine different titles with ISIL in their name were cited by the proposer. The main article, of course, is not located at ISIL, which is a strong argument against the requested move. But given that, again, nine different articles are at ISIL (now 13), it's hardly inconsistent to have them there. The usage of America and AAA in article titles is common, and no one ever refuted the proposer's argument. (He could've used other examples; the CIA's page is at Central Intelligence Agency, but look how many titles have CIA in the name!)
As for the acronym, again, AAA is a pretty good example for why that argument doesn't fly. One editor said that AAA was irrelevant because it's the common name, but no one denies that ISIL is more common than The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
To summarize, no reasonable argument was made in favor of the longer title besides consistency, which was pretty well shown to be a wash--either title would be inconsistent with some other articles. When you take that and you compare it next to a very clear and compelling WP:CONCISE case made by multiple well-respected editors, you have a policy-based consensus to move.
What I have done is not to express an opinion or !vote; I analyzed the policy-based arguments in favor and in opposition to the move, per WP:CONSENSUS, and made a decision accordingly. If I did so incorrectly, you have my blessing to file a move review. I will not take it personally. I do not, however, believe that I erred in my closure of the move request. Red Slash 00:58, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response but there was still no consensus with both sides having valid arguments. Your arguments are valid and so were the opposers ones. There was no clear consensus so that is why I disagree with your close. I do however appreciate the time you have taken to explain. Mbcap (talk) 22:31, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Concise[edit]

Hi red,

I regularly see you quoting this even on two syllable titles like plant sap and, from what I've seen, its your ~most quoted policy. I appreciate that I may be at the other end of the spectrum in not mentioning this policy but thought I would mention it. For me I've personally been getting into thoughts of optimum length of description but realise that this may be word games. GregKaye 02:59, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Greg, I am a very very big fan of concise titles. I like to put as few barriers as possible between our readers and the information they're seeking; that's why I'm such a huge proponent of putting articles at primary topic, slimming hatnotes, rewriting ledes, and putting articles at concise titles. I'll admit there's also significant satisfaction, for me at least, to seek information about the world ocean and find that information instead at Sea. I see that you are predisposed to ... value conciseness significantly less than I do. What do you mean by "word games"? Red Slash 22:52, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Its something I'm still trying to get my head around but there are certainly some instances where concise and optimum length may be synonymous so me preferring one to the other might be my word games. My concern is that (at least from my opinion) concise does not always apply and that, in some cases, longer and more descriptive titles may help readers identify the topic. For instance, I have never seen a biographic title in the format Biographic subject (notable definer A and notable definer B). In these cases some people may be "familiar" with the subject as a mountaineer while others may be be familiar with her/him as a computer programmer.
To this effect I recently wrote up a Wikipedia:List of Johns whose Britannica article titles contain broad description. In all these cases the base title (the name of the subject) is fairly short and that's even with Britannica's habit of adding titles directly to content. However a less wordy version of their subtitle contents may sometimes, I think, work well in parenthesis.
My main predisposition is that the main issue is recognizability and that, in this, there are various cases in which conciceness will either help or hinder the recognizability of the subject within the title.
Perhaps an irony is that this has been a lot of verbiage on the topic of "conciseness". Anyway, at least it has helped me think things through. Cheers. GregKaye 05:01, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate that here, in relation to issues of conciceness

Masjid al-Haram[edit]

Hello Red Slash. In Talk:Masjid al-Haram#Requested move 1 May 2015, I (i.e. the nominator for the move) reached the conclusion that the current title "Masjid al-Haram" is the optimal title for the article. Most !voters who supported the move from "Masjid al-Haram" to "Al-Masjid al-Haram" also seem to be ok about the current title as they have expressed on the talk page. So I wanted to withdraw my move request. But I am not sure if I am myself authorized to do so. Can you withdraw the move request for me? Thanks. :) Khestwol (talk) 09:19, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Khestwol, thanks for the invitation--you are right to have not closed the request yourself. Once someone else agrees with you, we have to let the RM run its course. Kosovo[edit]

Hello Red Slash. I'm trying something new to resolve the Kosovo debate. At the moment, I am waiting for a reply from Anastan and then I might need to contact one or two other editors to achieve some form of agreement in principle. That should bring a peaceful end to the bitter disagreements. In the meantime this is just a courtesy post to let you know that if Kosovo (republic) is a disputed territory then naturally the autonomous province is also disputed. It was not written as if to be but I have now made some bold changes to it. That will level the playing field in the interim. I hope you like the change, here is the edit, notice the lede and summary. --Oranges Juicy (talk) 07:36, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Oranges Juicy, for the heads-up! I don't have any problem with what you wrote on that province's page. I'll see you at Talk:Kosovo! Red Slash 01:04, 14 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Soda to soft drinks[edit]

Just wondering what your reasoning/justification was for your mass-moving of a lot of soda articles to "soft drink". --Prince Ludwig (talk) 23:30, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Prince Ludwig! The justification is WP:COMMONALITY, which demands that where neutral titles exist (that don't favor one variety of English over another), we should shoot for them. That's why we have grey (uncommon but okay in North America) instead of gray (very uncommon in the UK and other places). Red Slash 04:13, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Base (chemistry), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bitterness. RMs at Tagalog articles[edit]

Hi Red Slash. Can you now, please reopen the RM at Talk:Tagalog (disambiguation) so that the issue could be properly resolved in accordance with the !votes on that page and on Talk:Tagalog language? BD2412 did the right thing I think to revert the controversial, undiscussed move by kwami. However I won't be content if the language page stay at Tagalog even though far more !voters presented the argument to move it back to "Tagalog language". Consensus on both of these Talk pages must be counted and then both RMs can be closed. Thank you. Khestwol (talk) 12:41, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Odd edit[edit]

Whoops, SmokeyJoe and User:Deor, sorry about that. I have an autoreplace function in my Firefox, and it must've automatically replaced a swear word in that post. I'm very sorry, and I will change that to make sure it doesn't happen again. This is pretty embarrassing! Red Slash 15:43, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ceramics[edit]

Regarding your recent edit to Ceramics, which redirected that title to Pottery, please point me to the "prolonged discussion" which settled on that target, as I'm having trouble finding it. I have found a lengthy history of bold edits on that page, but I would hardly characterize Talk:Ceramics as ever having hosted much discussion. I have reverted your move of this article, which is linked to by several hundred pages. Southeastern are a "train operating company" (TOC), a term recognised by the entire industry and which conforms to the standards and conventions of WP:UKRAIL. Pages should only ever be moved without discussion if the page is recent or not widely linked to. -mattbuck (Talk) 22:27, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mattbuck,, is that really the most concise way to disambiguate the company? Could even (company) work? That said, your reversion is of course appropriate, per WP:BRD. Red Slash 19:56, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Using (Train Operating Company) is the preferred method of disambiguation as it is consistent among UK rail articles and is the industry term for such a company. It also makes clear what it actually is, whereas "company" or "rail company" could be anything. If you wish to suggest a change, you should go to WT:UKRAIL. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:15, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Red Slash -- I am curious why you decided to move Hastings West-Northwest Journal of Environmental Law and Policy to Hastings West-Northwest? The portion of the title that begins with "journal" is not a subtitle (see this source and this source). Although some sources abbreviate the title as "West-Northwest", nobody abbreviates it as "Hastings West-Northwest." Per Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals/Writing guide#Title, the full title should be used. Unless you have other objections, I will move the page back to its full title. Best -- Notecardforfree (talk) 02:21, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Notecardforfree, you are more than welcome to. I'm not an expert, but I thought it would be best to use the shorter title. If it really isn't a subtitle, then go for it! Red Slash 19:54, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
