RalBot needed[edit]

Is this Wikipedia_talk:Non-administrator_rollback#Has_anyone_contacted_those_who_participated_in_the_discussion_at_Wikipedia:Rollback_for_non-administrators.3F something your RalBot could help out with? MBisanz talk 05:00, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your support in my RfA. It was definitely a dramatic debate, that landed on WP:100! I paid close attention to everything that was said, and, where possible, I will try to incorporate the (constructive) criticism towards being a better administrator. I'm taking things slowly for now, partially because of the holidays and all the off-wiki distractions. :) I'm also working my way through the Wikipedia:New admin school and double-checking the relevant policies, and will gradually phase into the use of the new tools. My main goals are to help out with various backlogs, but I also fully intend to keep on writing articles, as there are several more that I definitely want to get to WP:FA status! Thanks again, and have a great new year, --Elonka 05:15, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you OK if this happens? I already added the section for its article next week. I personally think it is a good idea and a Message from the editor might be nice to get other ideas for it. The Placebo Effect (talk) 22:16, 7 January 2008 (UTC) [reply]

Sanger interview?[edit]

Has there been any progress or regress with the Larry Sanger interview you mentioned a while back? I drew up some potential questions, in case the interview is still a possibility: User:Ragesoss/Sanger. Cheers--ragesoss (talk) 02:20, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your Bot's delivery of Jan 2nd Signpost[edit]

Hey there...

Just wanted to let you know that the delivery of the Jan 2nd Signpost was not sent to my talk page. In looking into it, I followed the bot-trail back to you, and it appears that the bot did not delivery any Jan 2nd editions according to its history.

I have subsequently looked the edition over on its page, but wonder if there is going to be an issue with this week's edition?

Just thought I would bring it to your attention. Thanks. --Jordan 1972 (talk) 18:08, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jan 7, 2008 Signpost[edit]

Collaboration template[edit]

Hi, I have replaced the tag on Brisbane and left my thoughts on the matter at Wikipedia talk:Australian Collaboration of the Fortnight. I am interested in hearing more from you on the matter. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 02:05, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From the editor[edit]

I just wanted to note that I have also helped get the tutorial series going and recruited many people to help. I would have added this myself, but I don't want it to look like I am giving myself credit and editing your From the editor. The Placebo Effect (talk) 21:58, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I come bringing praise for the new feature – very nice. Just FYI: I wrote a somewhat-detailed tutorial about using templates. Perhaps the Signpost would like to extract from it. Also, Awadewit and I recently tackled a tricky issue involving blockquotes with nearby left-aligned images. She suggested we get the word out, and that the Signpost would be helpful. Details are about a third of the way down on this page. (If you like, I'd be happy to write it up in a more concise format.)
Cheers for a wonderful weekly product! – Scartol • Tok 19:37, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ral, I just wanted to say thanks for covering this in depth, and nice work digging up links for the appropriate articles. :)

When the Signpost first started I thought its coverage was a little dry. Now I am grateful for its impartiality and thoroughness. Indeed I think some Wikinews reporters could learn a thing or two... So thanks to you and the other Signposters for recording the small happenings in our community, it is such a valuable resource.

Suggestion[edit]

Following some discussion here, I had an idea for a new signpost feature - "Wikipedia Dispatches". The name is an allusion to the award a solider can receive by being mentioned in dispatches - an official after-action report. It would cover high quality editing and other contributions that have happened that week the english Wikipedia. Think of it as an expanded version of the new featured articles/photographs and DYK listings that we have every week. If you're interested, I can look for someone willing to write it. Raul654 (talk) 21:46, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At least two people are interested in writing such a section. See this Raul654 (talk) 16:19, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User history[edit]

Hi. Thanks for participating in my RFA. Am I to understand that any admin can read the talk page history of User:Wyss? Gwen Gale (talk) 05:38, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you're still watching my talk page, I left another note for you there. Thanks. Gwen Gale (talk) 18:43, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment on my talk[edit]

Thank you for letting me know about your change of heart on Gwen's RFA. That's a classy thing to do. I'll take your suggestion and look at the conversations again, though in fairness it would take a lot to get me to change my mind. In either case, though, classy thing to do. - Philippe | Talk 22:27, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Something else to note in the signpost[edit]

Pushing work on core articles...

"Wikipedia has had its criticisms for not getting enough core articles or vital articles up to scratch compared with much of the more pop culture oriented material. The Core topics Collaboration Of The Fortnight is a great place to push some of these articles to Featured Status. Many of these articles are pretty big and may be quite onerous for a single editor to reach Featured standard, so they are highly suitable for a collaborative effort."

Or something similar...cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:29, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

a thank you note[edit]

Thanks for participating in my RfA!
Although it failed 43/27/0, I'm happy because the outcome has been very helpful in many meaningful ways. Your support and remarks contributed so very much to this. Most of the editors who posted opposing opinions have never edited with me but since I strongly support their high standards about confrontational editing and civility, I've taken their comments very much to heart. Thanks for expressing your deep and kind understanding of everything (and yeah, for what it's worth, I'm still wincing). I think it all goes to show why civility has (and should have) so much sway here. The support and ecouragement to run again soon has been wonderful, thanks again. Cheers! Interview[edit]

Some time ago, you asked me to remind you that you were interested in doing an interview after my book on editing Wikipedia came out. It's due out tomorrow, so this is the requested reminder. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:48, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, Monday should be no problem. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 21:44, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please see User talk:John Broughton/January 2008 interview. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 17:13, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the name change, please don't get me started on all the issues I have with the information that O'Reilly has been sending publishers. (Re the incorrect name - the guy listed as the author is actually the author of another O'Reilly book, due out later this year, and the ISBN of his book is exactly one number higher than the ISBN of my book. I asked the O'Reilly folks, a couple of days ago, to fix this; haven't heard back.)
As for the March shipping date from Amazon, which I assume you got from them when you ordered the book, I do find that odd. I know that O'Reilly has already shipped a (free) box of books to the Wikimedia Foundation, for example, so there really are books out there. I'd be reasonably willing to bet that you'll get your copy from Amazon in the first half of February, not in March, but then again I don't know anything about the vagaries of how long it takes to print books or to ship them to bookstores and on-line sellers. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 13:40, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dispatches[edit]

Thanks for spiffing up my sandbox. Does this mean it's actually going in the Signpost? When does the latest issue appear? Marskell (talk) 10:52, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost Tim Vickers interview[edit]

Hi there, I saw in this week's signpost an interview with TimVickers. As you may have seen, completely by chance I have also interviewed him for the Wikipedia weekly podcast - it is the current live episode.

I left a note here: User_talk:Arknascar44#Tim_Vickers_Interview requesting the author of that article to put in a mention to the podcast as it is highly relevant and not even an old episode! Perhaps if Arknascar44 is not available or something you could add this in? I left the link and a summary I thought might be appropriate at that talkpage link.

I'd really appreciate it as it would be really good publicity for the podcast. I know that Signpost doesn't want to advertise for the podcast but this is so much more than advertising - it's about the most highly relevant "see also" link you could possibly get.

Cheers, Witty Lama 12:13, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone ahead and been bold by adding a short note at the bottom of the interview, setting it off enough (I hope) to make it clear that it's not part of the interview, regarding this. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 13:57, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dealing with advertising and spam - a tutorial[edit]

Wikiproject Mammal Collaboration[edit]

note for newsletter?

One of the greatest joys for me here is getting articles up to Featured status, and collaborative editing and review which goes on in Wikiprject Dinosaurs and Wikiproject Birds has been great at bringing folk closer together in polishing these articles up. Possibly even more than these two projects, WP Mammals would benefit from a collaborative approach, as many key mammal articles are quite sizeable and lend themselves more to collaboration than single editing (unless the editor is incredibly persistent/obsessive/time-rich/insane/ or brilliant)

Thus I have set up a mammal collaboration to see how we can make some kickass furry critter articles. Nominating key articles is ok, even if you can't do much work on them.

The other benefit is it facilitates Peer reviewing and copyediting as well as reviews at FAC time. FAC can be a big place and I have missed reviewing things I owuld have been interested in due to the needle-in-a-haystack feeling...cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 01:16, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BAG Changes[edit]

Hello. You may remember, some time ago, joining the BAG under the trial "open membership" system. Based on a lack of opposition to a reversion of this trial, I have now decided to be bold and perform it. The BAG has returned to a system under which users must go through a short period of discussion (like RfA, but less formal) before being added to the group by either a 'crat or an existing member. At the moment, I have said that discussions should last for 10 days and that community noticeboards should be spammed to encourage participation in each request - evidently this is to avoid the "cabal" impression.

As you have already been a member for some time, you're likely to be an excellent candidate to apply to the group and I encourage you to do so. Alternatively, if you totally disagree with my changes and fail to see any merit in them at all, I'm hoping to take part in discussions on WT:BAG. Though I must ask now if I may - please don't revert me without a decent amount of discussion first. Thanks, and if you have any questions about what I've done, please leave me a message, send an email or chat on IRC. Martinp23 17:29, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FA-Team and first mission (MMM)[edit]

Dear Ral,

Many thanks for volunteering to join the FA-Team. We now have a first mission, to help the Murder, Madness and Mayhem WikiProject improve twelve articles towards featured article status. These articles are really interesting, and the person in charge of WP:MMM is enthusiastic about our support, so this mission should be a real pleasure. Please watchlist the mission page and the WikiProject page as well as some (or all) of the twelve articles. The students contributing to these articles are all new to Wikipedia, so please be ultra-friendly towards them.

The coordinator for this mission is Wrad (talk), who may suggest further ways in which you can help. I will provide back-up. In particular, it might be useful for you to indicate which of the twelve articles interest you most (or which ones you are watchlisting) on the mission page.

Thanks again for joining in. I think this will be a lot of fun for all of us, and hopefully we can make it fun for the students too and create a few more featured articles between now and April. Geometry guy 22:08, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Game (game)[edit]

Hi, could you consider removing protection of The Game (game). Two published sources now exist. I have written a prototype article at Talk:The_Game#The_Game_.28game.29_2 based entirely on the references (links included). I don't have an account so if you want to communicate with me could you please respond to my prototype article on The Game talk page. Ouch[edit]

I was reading RfA, and I saw your question about Ignore all rules. I don't know if that's commonly asked for users attempting to become admins, but that is one brutal question. :) I'm not sure how I'd begin to answer it, myself. Enigmaman (talk) 06:39, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see you finally got him for not answering it. You can't Ignore Ignore? Darn! I've been following this with some interest. Enigmaman (talk) 02:11, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a dispatch?[edit]

I really can't commit to doing this often, but I don't want the dispatches to die so I'm working one up quickly. If you already have one, consider mine for next week. It's at User:Marskell/Sandbox. I'll tell you when I'm done. Marskell (talk) 18:57, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Um, did you redirect User:Marskell/Sandbox to the dispatch? This is really bizarre: I can't find any of my old sandbox history. Marskell (talk) 19:07, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, Wikipedia Dispatches: Great saves at the Featured article review can be a dispatch, if you don't have one already. It is a bit of back-slapping, but Raul suggested the dispatches to reward people for their work and I think this qualifies.
Please don't move the sandbox. Cut-and-paste to your desired target. By moving, you're moving all of the sandbox history. Cheers, Marskell (talk) 19:47, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Broken link for Vanished user[edit]

The link [[/Vanished user|a vanished user]] does not work from Single-Page View. This "allows the user to vanish" more than presumably intended. You may prefer a specific figure for tagging instead of "thousands". The final tally was 69,000 articles tagged and assessed. --ROGER DAVIES talk 06:28, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now I think of it that's slightly misleading, as we waded through 69,000 articles to arrive at a subset of just over 30,000 tagged and assessed for Milhist. We tagged many thousands for WPSHIPS, WPAVIATION, WPUSA, WPFRANCE, WPBIOGRAPHY etc even if they weren't Milhist articles. As this is getting complicated, it's probably best to replace "assessment and tagging of 69,000 military history-related articles" with "the evaluation of 69,000 articles" as every single article needed evaluating irrespective of whether it was subsequently tagged and assessed as Milhist. --ROGER DAVIES talk —Preceding comment was added at 09:26, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A minor point: the first election concluded in February 2006, not January 2006; so, technically speaking, I wasn't a coordinator until the later date. :-) Kirill 17:39, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Milhist Coordinator election
Thank you very much for your support in the recent Military history Wikiproject election. I'm more than happy to serve the project for another six months! --Eurocopter (talk) 15:34, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject report[edit]

Yeah, sure thing - if nobody minds. :) Regards, Rudget. 15:55, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds great. Glad I'm able to update the format where necessary. Rudget. 17:12, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support[edit]

Ral315/Archive 29: I wish to thank you for your support in my unsuccessful bid at becoming an Assistant Coordinator for the Military history WikiProject. Rest assured that I will still be around, probably even more than before, and I have the utmost confidence in the abilities of the current and new coordinators. I might also mention that I am already planning on running again in August. As always, if you need anything, just get in touch. -MBK004 21:30, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

News and Notes[edit]

Here's something you might want to add to the News and Notes section of the Signpost: I'm Proud to be a Wikipedian. Do you think that' a good thing to put in? Soxred93 | talk bot 17:39, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ral[edit]

If you have any time, energy or enthusiasm for discussing any of the recent wiki issues in an audio format - inspired by the good people at 'wikipedia weekly' I've been inspired to setup Wikipedia:NotTheWikipediaWeekly which will have its first 'round table' at 1am UTC, March 4th - you'd be most welcome, and you'll see from our topic list that we aim to discuss some aspects of wiki life you've expressed an interest in recently....

Your thoughts would also be most welcome regardless.

Question[edit]

Hi, I'm struggling to add an image off commons to the infobox on this page: Flores, Buenos Aires (Image:Flores-Buenos Aires map.png) I cant figure out what I'm doing wrong. Is there any chance you could look at it for me? Regards. English peasant 14:35, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just a heads up... I noticed some grammatical errors in WJBscribe's quote, which were originally posted by him. Will's comments were made during a normal conversation, so it's no big deal. However, you may want to either correct them or place [sic] on them on the Signpost article. - Mtmelendez (Talk) 13:01, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost[edit]

Just wondering, could I write for the Signpost and possibly create a new section of the Signpost? I have experience with writing newsletters for WikiProjects and would like to help. STORMTRACKER 94 Go Sox! 00:55, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jimbo Signpost article[edit]

Great work on the Signpost article about recent events related to Jimbo Wales. Cla68 (talk) 03:05, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Damn, I was just about to say the same thing. Impressive Ral! - Mtmelendez (Talk) 04:29, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks :) Ral315 (talk) 06:52, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the piece was well done. Tactful, well-sourced, well-worded. Cirt (talk) 07:15, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Seconded thirded... Fifthed. I was having trouble understanding what all the hoopla was about, but your story presented things in a nice even, and well-referenced way that tied it all together. It's an interesting window into how the more distant parts of our little clan operate. -Pete (talk) 09:07, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

signpost delivery[edit]

When your bot "delivers" the signpost it creates a section name of ==''Signpost'' updated for March 3rd, 2008.== (example). Later, on some talk pages that signpost is delivered to, MiszaBot III archives old sections and changes section headers. (example). Would it be possible for your bot to put the space after the first == and before the second == when the signpost is delivered? --Rockfang (talk) 14:56, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Understood[edit]

Ah, I see what you mean here. That earlier thread had gotten a bit out of hand, and I apologize for being part of that. Also wanted to drop a note to say how good a job I thought you did with the extremely difficult Marsden story in this week's issue. The story got to the point where it had to be covered, and you handled it like a professional, in my opinion. I think you do a really professional job in general. I've always wanted to write for the Signpost, but my real life employer prohibits it. Sigh. I hope you don't mind too much that I sometimes tend to sort of troll the tipline. --JayHenry (talk) 23:00, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also find that amusing. Also, I have adopted User:Ral315/WTHN as my standard. Cheers. Maximillion Pegasus (talk) 04:38, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can we put an advertisement for Wikiproject 'Spotlight' in an edition? We really wanna get it back together. Respond on my talk page please. Mm40 (talk) 00:20, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost - WM09[edit]

I've got an update on Wikimania 2009, and the discussion about the safety of Wikimania 2008. Ral315 (talk) 21:22, 9 March 2008 (UTC) - If you don't mind, could I take the WM09 story? dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 07:41, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm...I suppose there isn't that much information out yet. I've added a bit anyways. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 07:46, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
