Calling all active WP:NOVELS members

WikiProject Novels Roll Call

WikiProject Novels is currently holding a roll call, which we hope to have annually. Your username is listed on the members list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active within the project. If you still consider yourself an active WP:Novels editor, please add your name back to the Active Members list. Also feel free to join any of our task forces and take a look at the project's Job Centre to get involved!

Next month we will begin the coordinator election selection process. We hope to have more involvement and input this time around! More news will be forthcoming. Thanks, everyone! María (habla conmigo) 14:14, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

rfa

You're welcome. If you maintain your good record then try for rfa again in about six to eight months, you should have the time needed then to have a realistic shot at passing an rfa. TomStar81 (Talk) 04:57, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

...that is, if you have good numbers of edits, and "admin-ish" work by the time that comes along. Allowing this RfA to continue is a baaaaad idea if you do wish to become an admin. (talk→ Bwilkins / BMW ←track) 15:23, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
I disagree. This is a great way to get feedback about edits and to learn what it takes to become an administrator. And also, Pyfan, please see my comment in the neutral section of your RfA. I left you a note about WP:LAVT that should be helpful. Best of luck, Malinaccier (talk) 15:48, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
As do I. Although an editor review would have been more appropriate, the RfA is open now, and there's no harm in letting it run for a few days so the candidate can receive some constructive criticism. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 15:50, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Signing in the RFA

Hi! I was reading over your RFA, and just wanted to suggest that you sign responses to people in your RFA to avoid confusion. For instance, where you're having a conversation with OlEnglish under discussion, it would read a little easier if you signed your responses. I wish you honest good luck with your RFA and posted my support, by the way. -FaerieInGrey (talk) 00:06, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Regarding you RfA

Hello! I just wanted to drop in to say that I admire your perfunctory answers to the questions posted by me; no hard feelings between us even though I opposed, eh? Cheers. Imperat§ r(Talk) 01:32, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

I realize this may be an extremely rude and irrational request, but could you possibly squeeze enough time to review Agatha Christie for Good article status? If you need an example, just look here! Even though it's not complete, it should be decent enough to start one; in case you need help, I can prod you along...Cheers. Imperat§ r(Talk) 01:34, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
To do it, all you have to do is follow the link posted at the top of the talk page and follow the rules at WP:GAN. Again, thanks a million! Cheers. Imperat§ r(Talk) 01:56, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Mwahahaa....I just posted another question XD Don't worry, it's not serious... :P Cheers. Imperat§ r(Talk) 02:57, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

I suggest that you come back in a few moths with an edit count of over 2,500 and you'll more that likely pass, cheers. Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 07:54, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

I think you got enough useful comments out of your RFA as you will get at this current stage. I would recommend for everybody's sanity involved and in particular in view of the perception of a future RFA which you will go through to withdraw at this point. Lingering on now will only reflect badly and with the qualities you do show it would be a shame if that would prolong the time it will take you to be an admin unnecessarily. Agathoclea (talk) 00:13, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I saw your review for the above article and noticed some rather major problems. I have therefore opened a reassessment with a list of problems, so that the article can be revaluated. Regards--Jackyd101 (talk) 11:32, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: The Paul Bunyan Thing

Although I thought it was rather funny, as well as apparently true, I do agree with your rather quick removal of the change. I apologize for it, as I was unable to stop myself. I use "apparently" because Paul Bunyan was a fictional character, who had no stated sexual preference. While the statue would indicate that he did, as shown on THAT particular page, it may not be true. Using the evidence acquired from that particular article, one would assume that the creators of said statue would have implied that Paul Bunyan was a fister. Which is not a definite fact.

Sincerely,

James "not Jimmy"

Hi Pyfan, sorry that went the way it did. I was still assessing your contributions when I noticed you'd withdrawn, but might well have moved to neutral or weak support, and I was one of your opposers last time. I'd already noticed much more use of edit summary, the lack of which was a minor criticism of mine last time. I did say in your first RFA that I hope to support later in the year, might I suggest how you might achieve that? For the next three months go on editing as you have been - spend time in the areas you enjoy and try out a few areas you haven't worked on, if you are still studying read the articles related to your studies and maybe there will be edits you can make in those areas. Then after three months start a new editor review, and invite those of us who opposed your RFAs to comment (probably best not to invite too many at one time and don't bother with people who are no longer editing). PS Feel free to answer my question 5 here or on my page. ϢereSpielChequers 12:12, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Could you not revert the changes please.

You can get as uppity about this as you like. The fact is...i am right.

And this kind of stuff contributes to MISINFORMATION on the www. AND adds fuel to the people who denigrate all the good stuff on Wiki.

Warnings?? Vandalising!!!! Do me a favour.

Just would someone stop obstructing people from putting FACTS right.

Great Expectations

I was really excited to see a GA nomination for Great Expectations so congratulations for undertaking the effort! However, I can't help but feel the article isn't ready yet. Articles on novels should probably have information on publication history, how it was received by critics, and how scholars analyze the story. All that information should be attributed to reliable published sources ("sparknotes" likely won't pass as reliable). Some of this is in the lead, but remember that the leadshould only talk about what will be further fleshed out in the rest of the article. Right now, most of the article is plot summary (which has improved considerably since I last saw it) but it shouldn't be the most important part of the article. If you don't mind my advice, take a look at an article I worked on with several others that was granted Good Article status: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Look at the sections, what they talk about, and how many footnotes there are to get an idea of what GA-quality articles on novels are looking for. --Midnightdreary (talk) 17:33, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your opinion and advice, I'll remove the GA request and work on it for a bit longer, thanks — OliOR Pyfan! 19:50, 23 November 2009 (UTC).

Rfa?

I recall that about a year ago you self-nominated for adminship and in one of the most interesting rfa's in memory your request garnered a number of moral supports before being closed as unsuccessful. My question to you is do you still want to be an admin? You've got a chance now I think, and I would be willing to nominate you if you like. TomStar81 (Talk) 09:01, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

  • Hi Tom, Thank you for your great faith in my abilities! I would definitely still like to be an admin, I have one question first though, I have been relatively inactive this last month and a half due to the fact that I was on holidays overseas. My question is this: Do you think this will have a significant impact on the result of an RfA? Sincerely and thanks, — Oli OR Pyfan! 10:14, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
We've had people who were at rfa with long inactive streaks before; people do take notice of that at admin request because things change (albeit subtly) during the time spent away. If you remain relatively active for about three months both on site and in admin-related areas (like afd or rc patrolling) then you should offset the time spent in absence and that will help balance your rfa. Otherwise, you are more or less at the point now where your contributions and your time here on wikipedia make another rfa a real possibility. TomStar81 (Talk) 21:42, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Community de-Adminship - finalization poll for the CDA proposal

After tolling up the votes in the revision proposals, it emerged that 5.4 had the most support, but elements of that support remained unclear, and various comments throughout the polls needed consideration.

A finalisation poll (intended, if possible, to be one last poll before finalising the CDA proposal) has been run to;

  • gather opinion on the 'consensus margin' (what percentages, if any, have the most support) and
  • ascertain whether there is support for a 'two-phase' poll at the eventual RfC (not far off now), where CDA will finally be put to the community. Matt Lewis (talk) 01:03, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. —DoRD (talk) 12:51, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 15:17, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you very much for signing up for the July Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two and a half years, all the way back to the beginning of 2008! We're really going to need all the help we can muster to get it down to a manageable number. We've ambitiously set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog this month. In order to do that, we're going to need more participants. Is there anyone that you can invite or ask to participate with you? If so, we're offering an award to the person who brings in the most referrals. Just notify ɳorɑfʈ Talk! or Diannaa TALK of who your referrals are. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

  • Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.

GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

No problem :). I'm just happy that we're finally in a position to do something about RfA! — Oli OR Pyfan! 14:18, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
It looks as if I'm the coordinator of this project. Although I started it, I'm an admin already and have nothing personal to gain or loose, but I don't really want to be seen as the leader or pushing my own opinions or ideas. Would you consider being a permanent coordinator of the project? It would mean doing the kind of stuff you are doing already, and moving threads to their respective new sub pages as they occur, and perhaps striking or removing inappropriate or irrelevant comments, and generally keeping the whole thing on track. If we start a very short coordinator list, I would put my name on it. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:56, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
I'd be happy to be one of the coordinators :). — Oli OR Pyfan! 02:44, 13 April 2011 (UTC) P.S. I hope no water hits your window...

Hey

How's everything going, Pyfan? I've suggested that we require inactive RfA reform members to reconfirm their membership on the task force. The details are over here. It looks like Kudpung (coincidentally) is thinking somewhere along the same lines. Please let me know what your thoughts are about this idea. Regards, Swarm X 06:01, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
