Hi Samtar. The theory is my own, based on the common usage of the slang term 'ho' and a sense that in [maybe] most platoons there would be at least one guy who was a bit reckless and more likely than not to get a medal, if only a posthumous Purple Heart. Concern for him and his team members would make him a talking point.
The derivation from Chinese is a rather convoluted argument and in no way approaches the meaning of the phrase gung-ho.
I haven't found any references to back up my theory, per se, but I was told that the Boy Scouts in the UK have a slightly derogatory term for one who is greedy for merit badges. psic88 16:38, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
