Ἡ Βικιπαιδεία ἑλληνιστί[edit]

Hi there, I am contacting you here as this seems to be the wiki you are most active in. There is currently an ongoing proposal with regards to having an ancient Greek Wikipedia, accompanied by an active incubator wiki that has plenty of articles already. I thought I would let you know as you have an interest in ancient Greek, so you're more than welcome to participate if you find it worthwhile. Gts-tg (talk) 17:19, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar
For initiating the process which disposed of Philodoppides. I still remember the mixture of admiration and fury I felt when I uncovered a longstanding well-constructed obscure biographical hoax, and how long it took me to be certain. At least "Bilitis", "Ossian" and "Rowley" wrote some decent poetry.

Out of curiosity, is "doppides" a plausible name element? I have some Latin but no Greek worth speaking of, but it feels wrong to me. Narky Blert (talk) 16:30, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this! You're absolutely right, -doppides isn't plausible; the name should mean 'son of Philodoppus', but -dopp- isn't a syllable that occurs in any ancient Greek word or name as far as I know. I suspect it's based on, e.g., Pheidippides (Pheid-(h)ipp-ides, 'son of Pheidippus'). Poimenlaon (talk) 18:05, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Came here to award the same barnstar! Thanks for your attention to detail, and for raising the issue so clearly. —Ganesha811 (talk) 23:54, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
