Hi Pengo, Just an idea, but why don't you co-licence this image under GPL? I know that this image is not "free software" per se. The main idea behind it is just that you can publish the whole image under one licence (GPL) and not two...

OK, thanks. Went and saw Jill on Thursday before doing the walk and she gave me the low-down. The 'track' was a bit rough and we lost it at one stage, but eventually got back on it. It doesn't go down to the river/creek anymore, though it was within earshot; apparently a biologist had warned the walkers could impact on the frogs down there, so they took that bit out. It was an interesting walk overall, but we had to rush a bit as it was getting late and didn't want to try to find our way out in the dark (so that meant limited time for photos). Jill said she didn't think we'd get to Goolengook, suspected the bridge was out, but hadn't actually tried herself for a long time; we wouldn't have had time anyway. --jjron (talk) 15:43, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Pengo,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. July WMAU Melbourne Meetup

'Needs washed' as copula omission

Hello, Pengo. You recently edited Copula (linguistics) in a way that suggests "The car needs washed" is a copula omission. I'm not aware of any published analysis that calls such constructions copula omission, though they may well exist. It's also possible, though, to analyze this construction in a way that does not imply copula deletion, e.g. as a variant of "The car needs washing." Simia maxima

Hi Peter,

I noticed that, back in 2006, you created the Simia maxima redirect to King Kong. Was this a joke, or is King Kong ever actually referred to by a scientific name in the relevant films or other media? The term doesn't appear on the article, and I have been unsuccessful in tracking down references to the term. Unless we can source it, I would recommend deleting it; I can't imagine anyone using it as a search term unless it appears in the media somewhere.

Missing ants

Hi Jonkerz. Sure thing. I can do that. I've got some bad news for you though: the list looks the same when you include blue links (i.e. it's all red links). Good chance there's some redirects from synonyms missing though. This is the whole list. All ant species (Formicidae) which were found in at least 40 publications (the minimum for google ngrams to pick it up), as long as one mention was after 1970. Publication stats

Was wondering if you can run the script that you are using to generate the top published taxa on a given list. It would be nice to see the most published species in List_of_birds_of_India - actually would like the full list with the number of publications next to them - even if it is only indicative and based on google scholar. I was earlier trying to prioritize them based on reporting rates in the field as on User:Shyamal/todo but sometimes one finds too few published sources (at best only taxonomic descriptions and field identification). @Shyamal: Hi.. Thanks for asking. Unfortunately the way I have it set up, I don't have a quick way to make a list which filters for only Indian birds or birds on that list. Next time I start working on it I'll see if I can add it as a feature though. First I'll make a general bird list which you can try to filter. So I finished the top 100 a while back ago; I haven't really edited much since. This time I'm interested in a list of the most written about ant genera and/or genera+species. Hey @Jonkerz:, sorry don't have the time to make any new lists at the moment. The list already has all the species I could find in google books, so shrinking it just to genera would look pretty similar anyway. I never tried searching for just genus names without the specific name because I figure the data would be too noisy (e.g. picking up every mention of "Azteca", ant or not).

I'd recommend just counting how many times genera appear in the list maybe to give an idea of importance? Sorry can't be more helpful, but hope that's useful all the same. —Pengo 08:55, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Handling species epithet redirects

What would you do with strobilacea? As you may be aware, there are a number of species epithets on Wikipedia that redirect to a single species, when Wikipedia has multiple articles on species with that epithet. There are some disambiguation pages for epithets, but I'm not interested in working on those myself. I usually redirect the epithets I come across to Wiktionary if there is a Wiktionary entry for them. Wiktionary doesn't have a strobilacea entry yet, and I'm not sure if it would be bad practice to retarget Wikipedia's strobilacea to a non-existent Wiktionary entry. Should I get it deleted? Or can I redirect strobilacea to Wiktionary? Plantdrew (talk) 04:22, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

@Plantdrew: Hmm, I don't think Wikipedia has a particular policy, but Strobilacea should probably be a disambiguation page. Soft redirects to Wiktionary are usually for verbs and other parts of speech. Have a look at Sativum, Albus, Officinalis, Elegans, Vulgaris for examples, as they are all very common specific epithets. The disambig pages only have a tiny number of the species they're found in though. See catalogueoflife.org for a list of many strobilacea species. —Pengo 10:27, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

@Plantdrew: Yeah, a wiktionary link box and a list of existing Wikipedia pages is plenty. You could spend a lifetime making and maintaining these kinds of pages by hand. List of least concern fishes

In case you haven't noticed the problem yet, List of least concern fishes is in the hidden Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded. That's because {{columns-list}} is being used for virtually all the content, and the amount of content is exceeding the 2MB include size. Looking at the bottom of the article shows that MediaWiki has given up trying to expand the templates—for example, it shows Template:Reflist rather than expanding it. I have fixed a couple of pages like this with a module but I'm not sure much can be done here because the template is very efficient. Perhaps a template exclusively for this function would help because all 222 calls to columns-list are identical, so the template does not need to make decisions about parameters. I saw the fuss which is reflected in the above section and want to emphasize that I am not planning to blunder into the article! I might be able to help, if wanted. Hi Johnuniq. Thanks for pointing it out. As a work around, the column formatting could just be removed, perhaps just for the end sections of the article. However, if you have a better solution which works, such as making a template exclusively for this function, please do make the changes and I'd be happy to incorporate the solution back into Beastie Bot so other similar pages also take advantage of it (and so problem wont reoccur when the page is eventually updated again). I do welcome any genuine edits or fixes to the page. —Pengo 05:37, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

So far, so good. You will see I did an edit at List of least concern fishes which has removed the problem. My workaround uses Module:Biglist but is not fully emulating {{columns-list}}. It works for the colwidth parameter, but the template has several other parameters that I have not bothered to implement. It defaults to colwidth=30em so if wanted that parameter could be omitted. I note in the Biglist documentation (which you appear to have written) it says the module "is not intended for use in articles". Does that need to be edited/clarified? If I understand correctly, you expanded the list partly using a bot. Please note that the "connecting term" in the names of botanical infraspecies must not be italicized, so you need to produce links like [[Cycas szechuanensis subsp. fairylakea|''Cycas szechuanensis'' subsp. Extended confirmed protection

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. Syagrus disambiguated

I see you cite on your page "Syagrus" as an interest of yours. Just want to alert you that I added a qualifier to the main article on "Syagrus," the genus of palm trees. I made the article title "Syagrus (palm)." The reason is, there are at least three things called Syagrus, dealt with to one extent or another in Wikipedia; several links were going wrong, and I went through and fixed those and disambiguated. There are:

• the genus of palm trees--we have individual articles on the species, an article on the genus, and a category page for the genus;
• a genus of beetles--we have individual articles on the species, and we could have an article on the genus some day (although a category page is unlikely);
• a Greek poet--we have an article.

The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Origins of the "Focus stacking" article

I intend to improve the "Focus stacking" article. To do this I would like some background, if you can remember, where you found information for the original writeup of the article. Anything you can remember could be helpful. Also, I have a few questions...

1. Do you know of, or where I might find, reliable secondary sources that reference primary sources?
2. What other names for this topic were considered?
3. Why was it written as a "digital" process even though the title is more general?

I don't wish to burden you with a lot of work, so whatever you can recall would be helpful.

@NewageEd: I created the article over 10 years ago and I don't remember much. From the commit comments, it appears it was based largely on a section from Depth of field. Perhaps there's bits of information gathered from various app websites too, but I'm not sure. In those earlier days of Wikipedia you could get away with creating a more stubby article without too many sources and just letting it grow.

Looking at the redirects to the page (which it looks like I made most of), other names could have been "Extended depth of field", "Stack focusing", "Extended depth-of-focus", "Extended depth of field images", and "Focus stacked [image]".

Adding information on an analogue/film process would be great. I only wrote about what I knew, could easily find, or what was my interest at the time—all of which would have pointed to the digital process. My hope when creating a new article is always that it can be improved beyond the scope of my knowledge and research so I wish you all the best in improving it. —Pengo 23:58, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

Asking for your comment about 2018 Trypophobia article RfC

Hi, Pengo. I saw that in the RfC on Trypophobia that you were the only user who argued in favor of removing the image which induces Trypophobia. I'm now trying to explore why users otherwise unanimously decided to keep the image. I was wondering if you had any opinions on your gauge of the situation when the RfC occurred in 2018. I'm not sure if your opinion on the issue has changed, but users in the talk page for that article are emphasizing the near-unanimity of that decision. @IronMaidenRocks: I know someone with serious trypophobia. I can tell you they and similar users were not commenting because they were not going to a page with a heap of images that make them throw up in their mouth. @IronMaidenRocks: i.e. there's a huge selection bias as the page is inaccessible and actually hostile to people with more serious forms of the condition. It's like running a survey on a page that claims epilepsy doesn't exist, and asking whether we should "censor" flashing images, and the entire survey page flashes rapidly. What do you think will be the result? How much input do you expect from people with photosensitive seizures? I don't know what I said on the RfC—you didn't link it—and I don't know why you're asking, but I don't imagine my views have changed, no. —Pengo 02:29, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Can I ask you both why you think all except for one of the users (you, Pengo) who participated were corrupt participants? Half voted to collapse the photo out of concern for sufferers, and some of them went up against those who didn't seem to care for sufferers or thought of the condition as probably false, but you describe everyone except for one as cruel and biased. What gives? I think it's a shame that so many wouldn't even vote to hide the photo, but I don't think most of them were intentionally being cruel. I don't think a new poll will change anything either, but it's okay to try. Acidsetback (talk) 22:28, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

@Acidsetback: I personally never questioned the other participants' motives, did not call them corrupt, nor assumed bad faith. I was unaware of any connection to 4chan trolling or brigading of votes.

All I said was the participants were necessarily a biased sample due to the design of the page. Both the discussion and the wikipedia pages leading to it were (and still are) inaccessible and literally hostile to those with the condition being discussed, especially those with more severe reactions, and no attempt was made to seek the opinions of those with the condition, so of course people with the condition, whose opinion should be valued in the decision, are going to be unable or unwilling to participate. I haven't looked back but I believe there were no voices of anyone with the condition, let alone anyone with a severe symptoms, nor any attempt to include their voices.

There's also a pile-on effect where once a view is established in a forum, dissenters mostly don't bother to respond, which would further discourage anyone from responding if they had got that far.

I did not call anyone intentionally cruel, although it's not difficult to see how such a conclusion could be reached. Honestly, it's such a stupidly obvious thing to not to show big spiders on Arachnophobia and not to make the background of the Photosensitive epilepsy page strobe different colours. So if someone repeatedly supports vomit-enducing images on Trypophobia, then I can absolutely see why that would could be seen as a deliberately cruel act, but that is not something I actually said. —Pengo 00:10, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

I'll raise this concern sometime, unless you'd like to come to Talk:Trypophobia. I'm now of the opinion that you'll find cooperative users there. One thing I'd wonder is how to get in touch with people who have Trypophobia who might have varied opinions to share. No doubt taking just a few people's opinions would not represent everyone who suffers from the condition. I'm also unaware of Wikipedia's standards on polling a demographic for representation, especially considering this is a conversation dealing with style rather than content. Otherwise, I'm thinking of reaching out to researchers and psychologists who have studied the condition to get their take on the article as a whole, the location of the picture, and if some more appropriate and less shocking picture might be found. --IronMaidenRocks (talk) 13:11, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Pengo, here's a link to the poll: here. There were a few people who participated in the poll who have trypophobia and who were very sympathetic toward sufferers. Some who don't have the condition were sympathetic toward sufferers. But IronMaidenRocks says most users voted to keep the photo in the lead "mostly because of concerns about censorship", that you "believe that the RfC decision was made out of bias and cruelty", and that they (IronMaidenRocks) agree with that. IronMaidenRocks says the argument that the photo should remain for its educational value is "downright barbaric." With the way they put it, it was a white male conspiracy theory to keep the photo. IronMaidenRocks also says an ableist bias occurred. That may be so, but it appears there was no such bias for most of the participants. Most didn't argue censorship, and most didn't come from 4chan. These were years-old users voting and the voting discussion appears to have been advertised on Wikipedia, and so that's why it had a large participation. IronMaidenRocks put words in your mouth. Because, if you read Pengo's first reply, they used what I see as rather strong language which I interpreted, and I distinctly clarified that the way I said it was my own interpretation. Furthermore, why are you on a user's talk page discussing the subject of Talk:Trypophobia about discussion taking place there? I came here to ask Pengo questions about the discussion and whether they'd like to participate again. There's little that you've said or asked here which couldn't have been posted in that discussion. Here and here, on two different users' talk pages, you even accuse me of mocking you, others being against you, and then you changed the headings of your reports to say "Users engaging in disruptive/unbecoming behavior in Talk:Trypophobia discussion." I count one user (you) engaging in disruptive/unbecoming behavior at Talk:Trypophobia. I didn't quote everything because I didn't think "seem to believe" was important and communication usually includes summarizing what someone has said, lest you go into TLDR territory. I came to Pengo's talk page because you advertised coming here and gave a certain impression of Pengo's feelings. You also mischaracterized the polling. I wanted to know Pengo's feelings from Pengo's own mouth and I didn't want Pengo left with your inaccurate summary of things. I'm not discussing the topic of trypophobia here on this user's talk page. I'm discussing exactly what you discussed here on this user's talk page. I won't discuss with you further than to say that there's no way that I could relay someone else's opinions without making my own impression of it. Pengo has not said whether my interpretation was accurate enough, so you are accusing me of something that hasn't happened yet. It looks like you asked Pengo questions in such a way as to paint me in a bad light, a very literal twist on WP:Lawyering. And, before you say it, you and other users have repeatedly implied that my calling attention to your behavior and possible biases is a violation of good faith. These rules exist, in part, for us to compare the behavior of others to the rules, just as much as it is for us to compare it to ourselves. Being in the majority in the discussion doesn't give you the right to police behavior completely at the minority's expense. You've made numerous bad-faith accusations, and you've done it again. Pengo clarified their position by saying they "personally never questioned the other participants' motives, did not call them corrupt, nor assumed bad faith" and that what they "said was the participants were necessarily a biased sample due to the design of the page." That's different than what you said. They also talked about hostility and how the participants were "a biased sample" partly because of that. There does exist hostility in the polling discussion, but it was only among a few. And what Pengo said is still different than your characterization of their feelings. If anyone "lawyered" something, you did by insisting that prefacing some things you've said wasn't characterizing things in the way you characterized them.

You've also shown that you half-read and half-analyze situations. At two different users' talk pages, you described me as "a user who was previously uninvolved". And now you've said, "Being in the majority in the discussion doesn't give you the right to police behavior completely at the minority's expense." But I was involved before you, and I said, "Removing the image altogether is preferable, but the discussion shows voting was split. About 50/50. There was less agreement to collapse the image or tuck it away at the bottom of the article." Did you miss where I said "removing the image altogether is preferable"? And now you want to talk about self-interpreted rules only being followed by a user when the user agrees with them? That's you, is it not? I didn't express "indignance several times", as you claimed on two different users' talk pages. I expressed bafflement that you'd characterize all voters except one as cruel when half of them voted to collapse the image so that sufferers wouldn't see it unless they chose to see it, and when some who didn't vote to collapse it expressed sympathy and empathy.

I don't want to come find you anywhere. I said at Talk:Trypophobia that I'm not going to follow you to these pages you dinged me at with an alert. But you don't get to say that I can't respond on another user's talk page or on an article's talk page, especially when you've dinged me in an alert to the talk page and have mischaracterized and insulted my character. You seem to have a problem that includes trying to police who participates and what they can say. Leave Pengo in peace. I'm not going to clutter this user's talk page anymore. How we will see unregistered users

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
