From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, film looks interesting and I just watched the trailer; I play mountain dulcimer myself.

The issue right now is that it's not written in an encyclopedic style, but you should be able to fix that easily. You need to avoid abstract phrasings like "about following your dreams" and stick to very dry, factual language. And definitely don't use vague and advertising phrases like "takes you on a heartfelt journey--both musically and narratively--inviting you to see this musical instrument in ways you might not have imagined.". To be blunt, that's just fluff and not actual real information to inform a reader.

That's not to say that emotion can't be noted. If the message of the film is "people playing the dulcimer in the 1960s-1970s felt they were set free from industrialized music", that's fine to note. But don't turn it into "it was a fascinating time, full of struggle and rage, and a yearning for a... etc. etc." sort of emotional verbiage.

Here are the top things needed:

  • Remove any emotional/flowery/promotional/"movie trailer voiceover" language from the article. Stick to "just the facts, ma'am".
  • Ensure the "Plot summary" section actually summarizes the plot rather than raises an aura of mystery. Plot summaries are very direct on Wikipedia, they concisely say what actually happens in the film. No teasers, no cliffhangers. We don't need a shot-by-shot description, but aim for a paragraph or two of "the film starts out explaining the Appalachian roots of the instrument, then delves into J. Johnson's rediscovery of the instrument for an academic audience in the 1930s. Next it covers how the earliest post-WWII folk clubs adopted the instrument for X reason, etc." Something roughly like that.
  • Right now almost all your footnotes don't go to the actual source, but rather to Duclimuse's website. That can get your draft disapproved for copyright violations of the source articles. If the source articles are available online (Mercury News, etc) please link directly to the original source. If not available online, just give us the full name/date/title/publisher of each source, but do not link to copies on Dulcimuse. I suggest looking at WP:Referencing for beginners for ways to tidy-up your footnotes.
  • Glance around a little on Google, see if there are any other sources of serious media/academia mentioning the film that you can cite. Not blogs/forums/Facebook/Wordpress, but professional publications that have a reputation for fact-checking, quality control, etc. See WP:Reliable sources.
  • You may also find it helpful to take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Style guidelines.

If your article gets reviewed just as it is now it'll likely be declined, which isn't a problem, that just means you need to keep fixing it and then Resubmit when ready. Just don't be surprised or let down if it's Declined and you end up having to do several back-forths with reviewers to keep improving until it's ready to publish. Hello Pdelich, I don't generally answer private messages because that would reveal my email account and my real name to do so. Would you mind if I answer your question on my Talk page? I can do so in a way that doesn't reveal any particular details of your question, just answers it broadly. If that's good for you, just post a some basic "Sure, reply to my question generally" message on my Talk page for me to respond to. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:39, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You have new message/s Hello. You have a new message at David Condrey's talk page.

Copyright problem[edit]

The article was in a draft page at Draft:Hearts of the Dulcimer (film), and would still be there for you to improve if it had not been found to be a copyright violation - the "Main cast" section was a copy of http://dulcimuse.com/castcrew.html.

Before you tell me that you wrote it and agree to its use, I must explain that copyright is a very serious issue for Wikipedia, and we cannot host copied material, even temporarily, and cannot simply accept assurances from someone on the end of a wire. Release under Wikipedia's CC-BY-SA license allows any reader to copy, modify and re-use material for any purpose including commercial, and we have to be certain that the actual copyright holder understands and agrees to that.

There are two ways we can go from here:

  • You make an appropriate release, either by replacing "Copyright © 2014, Hearts of the Dulcimer. All rights reserved" on the source website by an appropriate release, or by sending a permission email from an address associated with the website. How to do that is explained at WP:Donating copyrighted materials, and it is important to read that carefully and follow the forms of words prescribed there. For general background, see Wikipedia:Copyrights#Contributors' rights and obligations.
  • I restore the draft for you without the copied passage, and you add to it in your own words, avoiding WP:Close paraphrasing of the copyrighted source.

Let me know what you would like to do. You can reply below here - I will watch this talk page.

There is a further issue I should explain: in writing here about your own film, you have from Wikipedia's point of view a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and you should read that page and the Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Generally, when editing where you have a COI, declare your interest (your username makes it fairly clear, but if in doubt state it explicitly), and don't edit directly, but make suggestions and submit drafts (as you have) for uninvolved users to consider. Hi John CD,
In response to the issues you brought up, I sent an email that is associated with my website regarding declaration of consent for all enquiries. The instructions also mentioned to place this on this talk page: {{OTRS pending}}
You asked me what I would like to do ... if you would kindly restore the draft in my sandbox, I will address your other issue of declaring COI.
Please let me know if there are any other pending issues you would like me to address. Thanks so much for your guidance.

Draft restored to Draft:Hearts of the Dulcimer (film) and OTRS template added to its user page. As restored, the page was in the queue for review, so I have done a procedural decline to put it back in the waiting state, to give you time to add your new references and the OTRS permission when it arrives. When it is ready, you can click the blue "Resubmit" button. JohnCD (talk) 20:02, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission at Articles for creation: Hearts of the Dulcimer (film) (December 7)[edit]

Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by JohnCD was: You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit when they have been resolved. JohnCD (talk) 19:54, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John CD,

I'm not sure what "Procedural decline to allow for new references and OTRS permission for copied text" means and what I need to do to remedy this. Would you please explain what is wrong and how I can correct it?

Thanks, pdelich (talk) 20:02, 7 December 2014 (UTC)pdelich[reply]

I have explained above - as restored, the page was in the queue for review, but if it had reached the head of the queue, the reviewer would probably have declined it, because it has not yet got OTRS permission or your new references. "Procedural decline" just means that I taken it out of the queue to allow you to fix those issues - then you can click "Resubmit" to put it back in the queue. JohnCD (talk) 20:06, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again,

Hopefully I have properly addressed the issues you brought up. I added the OTRS tag to the section you mentioned, added a statement in the overview section that we (the filmmakers) created this page for the COI issue, added a new reference, citing it in the overview. Did I miss anything? If anything else is needed, please let me know.

Thanks again for your help! pdelich (talk) 21:48, 7 December 2014 (UTC)pdelich[reply]

Looks good, see what the reviewer says. You could perhaps add something about when and where it has been shown, and its reception. Take out the line about you creating the page - you have put it there for the best of reasons, but in principle we don't have authors' names in articles, the point being that nobody owns an article, and contributions are recorded in the page history. For COI declaration it would be enough to put on your user page that you are the director of the film. After the article is published, if you want to suggest changes on the talk page, you could add (director of the film) after your signature. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:53, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I really have appreciated your guidance and encouragement. Thank you! I removed the COI declaration as you suggested and placed on my user page that I am the filmmaker for Hearts of the Dulcimer. I'd like to put an info box on my page like I've seen other films do (e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosquita_y_Mari). Where can I find information on how to do that?

I'm afraid to add information about how the film's been received because I fear that someone will say that it's marketing and promotion. We've only had rave reviews from those who have seen our film, but since I'm the filmmaker, placing those kinds of comments may make it seemed biased.

Hello Primefac,

I've waited 2 months since your message about the OTRS ticket. How much longer will it take?

OTRS Review[edit]

Hi Pdelich, Hasteur and I have removed your submission from circulation until the OTRS ticket can be completed. This is to keep it from being repeatedly declined for copyright violations. At the top of the submission you'll see {{AFC submission|t||u=Pdelich|ns=118|ts=20141207214038}} - once the ticket has been processed, simply remove the "t" after submission, making it ...submission|||u=.... If you want more help, stop by the Teahouse, the IRC channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance.. Primefac (talk) 17:16, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
