@HclUSA: I'm not sure what you mean by "always banish what newbies do." In regard to changing it to a better version -- I did. I replaced all instances of the SVG with the JPG (which you, in turn, reverted twice). In general, photographic images **should** be in jpg format. There is no reason to have a photographic image traced into an SVG. The resulting image will be massive in size and lose a ton of detail.   • Per WP:HEADERS: Only the first word in the caption or header should be capitalized (except for proper nouns).
  • Per MOS:ENTO: The en dash in a range is always unspaced, except when either or both elements of the range include at least one space, hyphen, or en dash.
  • Per MOS:HYPHENCAPS: In article text, do not use a capital letter after a hyphen except for a proper name.
  • Per WP:EL: one should generally avoid providing external links to... Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a featured article. Moreover, Liquipedia is user-generated content and cannot be used as a source (also it is an unreliable source; see video-game reliable sources).
  • Per MOS:CURRENCY: In general, the first mention of a particular currency should use its full, unambiguous signifier (e.g. A$52), with subsequent references using just the appropriate symbol (e.g. $88), unless this would be unclear.

Conflict of interest

I assure you that I have no conflict of interest. Frustration with a rather obsessive immature heckler reddit group, yes. Conflict of interest, no. I can tell that they seem to ache to add personal commentary on why they think this system is inferior to their favorites and the people who run it [Intellivision Entertainment] losers. I am not affiliated with Intellivision Entertainment, have no reason to edit on their behalf, except common decency, and do not care if it succeeds or not, except as a novelty or alternative gaming entity, if it is deserving. As far as images, the article had no images. I tried to put up one of the console and the unique controller and it got taken down and I was told I needed ones owned by the owners. So, I bugged Intellivision a number of times to send me something of the console and controller, and that is what they contributed. I was told the guy who posted it wasn't the official owner and they took it down. I spent a lot of time figuring out the paperwork to certify it was permitted by it's owner and someone still tried to take it down, but, having the documentation, I was able to have it retained. So, after the effort involved, you can see why I might not care to have it removed. I really don't want to try to start from scratch on another image.Daltonsatom (talk) 23:51, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

You reverted to an obsolete logo for Sustainable Australia

Hi, I noticed you replaced the logo at Sustainable_Australia with a newer version on the 14th of January. A comment was added about using a transparent image. The previous version included the slogan #RedefiningGrowth. This image needs to be restored. You can see it is currently in use at https://www.sustainableaustralia.org.au/ . @Teraplane: Hello. The slogan in not a part of the logo. Moreover, per Wikipedia:Logos#Logo choice: Logos that contain slogans should be omitted in favour of equivalent logos that do not. The slogans can be described in the article's prose, or the article's prose and infobox (not in the infobox alone). eSports -> Esports

@Nehme1499: Hello. The team's official name should generally be used, so if they write it as "AC Monza Team eSports", we should too. Esports VOD links

Hello, what is the proper way to reference an official recording of an esports match? Specifically for League of Legends, Riot Games has both an official site [1] and an official YouTube channel [2] where VODs are posted. Are these not acceptable because they are videos? Or because they are primary sources? Is there a certain way they are done for traditional sports, or a precedent that has been set for esports? @Chaddude14: Hi. We generally don't use the matches themselves as sources, since it can easily lead to original research. As a rule of thumb on whether or not to include content in an article, we should only include content that third party reliable sources publish.
Licorice is a notable subject and warrants an article. However, there is quite a bit of unsourced information, as well as fancruft, in the draft. For example, I don't see sources for the following statements, and it's likely that these should simply be removed:
  • ... with Ritchie preforming especially well in the latter game, going 7/0/6 on Kled.
  • Ritchie's counterpick Hecarim made another appearance in Cloud9's match vs Gen.G where he shut down CuVee on Aatrox to help his team to an important win.
  • Ritchie's Aatrox once again made its mark on two of the three games, neutralizing the mages picked by Afreeca's star toplaner Kiin.
The following statements are either unsourced or they are not actually present in the sources that are currently provided. I'm sure sources exist, however:
  • In playoffs, Cloud9 were matched up against the eventual Champions, Team Liquid, and were swept 0–3, ending their run in the quarterfinals.
  • This could/should be cut down a lot, as well: ... and Cloud9 chose to deploy even more unconventional strategies in the toplane; but this time, they were well answered. In Game 1, Cloud9 allowed their opponents to lock in toplane Viktor, a very contested and powerful champion, choosing to take Ekko as an unexpected counterpick. However, the matchup did not play out as expected, with Ritchie falling behind early, and eventuallt resulting in a loss. For Game 2, Cloud9 took Viktor immediately, but then later took Aatrox as well, sending Viktor to another lane. Although Ritchie's Aatrox went even in toplaner, Fnatic still took the game. Game 3 saw the Viktor vs Ekko runback, but once again, Ritchie struggled in the matchup and Cloud9 once again lost the Game 3, eending Cloud9's Cinderella run with a 0–3 sweep.
  • With his new team, Ritchie's individual performance significantly improved, and with him at the helm, Golden Guardians achieved an even 6 wins and 6 losses after the trade, a significant step up from last place. They finished the 2021 regular season with an overall record of 14–31, setting up a tiebreaker with Ritchie's former team, FlyQuest, where the winner would receive the final spot in the playoffs. Golden Guardians prevailed, in large part due to Ritchie's performance on Renekton, in which he dominated FlyQuests new toplaner, Kumo, on Camille. Due to GG's victory, the team qualified for their second playoff appearance in the organization's history.

Got it, I see how it can come off that way, I actually added a lot of these later in the draft, as I realized I had mentioned little to nothing about his actual game play, just awards and how his team finished. Again, due to lack lack of quality articles about esports players, there wasn't really a precedent for me to follow, and basing Licorice's page off of formatting from football athletes can only take me so far. Would it be appropriate to remove specific individual games details from the "Career" section and add it as raw statistics in another section? Would take any sort of funcruft/original research discussions away. If so I would base them off of this site {https://oracleselixir.com/} which is run by what I believe to be a reliable journalist and is frequently used by Riot and the official broadcast for stats. @Chaddude14: That's precisely why many esports players do not have articles -- its much more difficult to find third-party reliable sources writing about specific individuals, rather than just the team's general performance. When writing esports players articles, I generally avoid writing too much about individual game events, unless they are well-covered playoff matches or championship matches. I wouldn't recommend using the Oracle link for a reference (they attribute Leaguepedia for some of their info, which is WP:UGC and therefore, is not reliable), as well as I don't recommend creating a dedicated stats section (WP:NOTSTATS), as most people would have no idea what they mean. I rarely include statistics, and if I do, I try to make sure that they are easily understandable and published by extremely reputable sources (e.g. ESPN). If you want some other points of references, here are a few articles I have written, that I think are not overly detailed, while still summarizing an esports player's career: birdring, Carpe, ChoiHyoBin, Fleta (gamer), super (gamer). I don't claim that the aforementioned articles are perfect (in fact, after reading again, some of them are slightly off WP:NPOV), but hopefully they help. – Pbrks (t • c) 23:56, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
That makes a lot of sense, just feels strange as the games themselves are widely available. In sports can the broadcasters watching the game live and giving their analysis be a source? Also I read WP:NOTSTATS, and was wondering if converting a couple general stats to rankings would be appropriate, something along the lines of (2018 - 2nd in KDA among Toplaners, 2019 - 4th in KDA among Toplaners) to keep it concise and easy to digest. {https://gol.gg/esports/home/} would be the other site, or I could exclusively use stats that come directly from Riot and LoLEsports. Also also, from reading the articles you suggested, I noticed that some of the more popular Overwatch hero's having pages, while others such as Baptiste do not. Is there a reasonable threshold of popularity and that some of them reach and others don't? Or are some of them deserving of pages that just haven't been written yet. Also also also, I noticed that some League characters redirect to the League page, such as Kled but others like Viktor, don't, and none of them have their own page (that I'm aware of). Of course League has about 5x as many characters, but should they have links and/or pages? Once again I appreciate you taking your time to help me out. @Chaddude14: On the front page of gol.gg, it states: Hi, I'm Bynjee, I'm a developper [sic]. I started Games of Legends in 2014 because I couldn't find these kind of stats. Seems like a by-gamer-for-gamers kind of website, with typo errors to boot. I don't think dedicated sections are appropriate. Stats from Riot or LoL is not appropriate either; you should only include stats that are published by reliable third-party sources, and if so, it would be best to include the stat in prose.
The popularity of a character is not enough to warrant an article; there needs to be significant coverage of a video game character in order to justify them getting their own article. The folks over at WP:VG are very strict on this (which is a good thing). Viktor does redirect to the LoL page (Viktor (League of Legends)). I don't know much about the LoL characters, so I can't say much in regards to their notability. Possibly the main character(s) from Arcane (TV series) would be notable enough for their own now, since it may be that they have much more media coverage, but I am not sure. I think a List of League of Legends characters could be warranted, but again, the topic of "League of Legends characters" as a whole would need significant coverage by third-party reliable sources. Lastly, I wouldn't add links in Licorice to LoL characters at the moment, since the link will just redirect them to the main LoL Wiki page, which is not very helpful for readers.   • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

I notice you approved the DRAFT article Turner & Hooch (franchise) and rated it C class. It barely looks Start class to me ("a usable amount of good content", "weak in many areas", "article should satisfy fundamental content policies" "the referencing is inadequate, although enough sources are usually provided to establish verifiability"). It does not seem as if it passes WP:FILMSERIES or even WP:GNG. There is a rash of franchise articles that have been approved too early with very little information in them, and in my opinion very little chance of ever becoming {{good article}}s.

I understand the desire to encourage editors and be generous when reviewing DRAFT articles but Wikipedia does not need even more low quality redundant repetitive series/franchise articles with little chance of going anywhere.

We are a Chair of a University, all the claims are covered by the named books, websites and publications. Each layer of hairpin ends is twisted in accordance with the winding scheme. During the associated rotation the tool has to be moved in an axial motion for height compensation. @NosferatuTheVamypre: We need sourcing in the article in order to verify that the information is correct. Moreover, Existence ≠ Notability. The subject must meet the general notability guidelines; we need significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject to show that the topic is notable enough for inclusion in Wikipedia. Can you provide me with credible source examples I can use? There are articles on the show, but it's not exactly a BIG show so a lot of the sources are generic sites that are pretty much near the level to your basic blogs. Nevermind, I found some good article sources. The amount was bare because as I said, it's not a high-top show that gets much attention, but I found four good sources altogether; one on the ID site of the show's page, a Futon page, an article about auditions for Season 2 episode 1 I had to throw in there somehow and finally one on TV Tango mentioning it with some descriptions of it overall and when its seasons aired. I hope this is good. Also, the title needs to be changed to SHADOWS. I forgot to add the "S" at the end of that. Question about watermark removal.

Hello,

  I was wondering how you go about removing watermarks from photographic images. What software do you use for this process? What are your techniques and/or do you have any hot tips or valuable insights from all your experience? I suspect there is no general advice, and it really depends on the type of watermark in question and the particular circumstances. Still, if you can recommend some software that indispensable for this process, that would be super helpful. 
  
  Lastly, this is just out of curiosity, presume you wanted to make a watermark that was difficult or resistant to removal, what approach would you use? Or said differently, is there a type of watermarking that is particularly difficult or laborious to remove?

@DrBurningBunny: I use GIMP for watermark removal. Like you said, there is no one method that will work every time, but generally, I use GIMP's "clone" and "heal" tools for opaque watermarks (for translucent watermarks, sometimes you can just adjust the color and do some light cleanup). Obviously, the larger the watermark, more likely, the harder it will be to remove. The most laborious watermarks to remove are opaque watermarks, but it really matters where they are placed. If a watermark is sitting on top of a very plain part of an image, the removal will be quite easy (e.g., see the image history of File:Golghaltan 20190504 01.jpg). However, if the watermark is on top of a complex part of the image, it will be much more difficult (e.g. File:England U19 squad v Greece U19.jpg, it being over the shoes makes it difficult to remove and still look nice). – Pbrks (t • c) 18:51, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

@Ahmad1387: The draft needs better references. I would recommend fining sources from reputable news agencies. We followed that series with more true crime hits like SHATTERED and EVIL LIVES HERE: SHADOWS OF DEATH.". A source like this one of a few provided on the parent show's page so I can't imagine the spinoff needed many to prove its case. I can't find one by this source on the spinoff so we're out of luck there. Then there's this audition for Season 2 episode 3 of Shadows of Death: https://www.backstage.com/magazine/article/now-casting-a-new-hbo-pilot-needs-talent-74362/. Can't see how THAT isn't credible. I'll added this to the article for sure since it looks credible. Then there's some conflicting info here regarding Season 2 episode 3: "I Forgive you". The channel website has it airing on April 25th, but it's the third episode in the season. The first source is only relevant mentioning the show, not much to really get from it. But it's a source used on the parent show's page for something else so I figured a similar one mentioning the spinoff should be significant in a way. Backstage is made of use because it can address the whole covid thing on behalf of the participants of the show which I made a statement of. I don't see how a press release isn't credible when it's from the people who run the show and its basically information on the show's episodes and airdates. The article on the cop's death is detailing what happened and that his case is featured on the show. @NosferatuTheVampyre: I think you are confusing reliable sources with sources that demonstrate notability. Yes, press releases are reliable (usually); however, they cannot be used to demonstrate that a subject is notable. I can start up the company "Pbrks Pancakes" and throw out a bunch of press releases... but that doesn't mean that my pancake business should be on Wikipedia, even though there exist reliable press releases. To demonstrate notability, we want to see that other people care enough to write about the subject. Well it doesn't seem like it's not just "other people" but certain ones that have sources high enough for your interest. Maybe if President Joe Biden wrote about the show it would be of standard to you and what this site wants. Unfortunately, other stuff exists. These aren't my standards, these are Wikipedia's standards. Writing a new article is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, and having your article not accepted/deleted is very frustrating -- it's happened to me as well. However, if you are not able to find the appropriate sourcing to create a new draft, that does not mean that Evil Lives Here: Shadows Of Death information cannot be included at all. Help with transparent background reverts

Hi Pbrks, thanks for almost single-handedly clearing out Category:Images that should have transparent backgrounds. I am trying to do my part and I replaced two images with transparent versions: File:World Lacrosse logo.png, File:World Netball.png. For some reason my edits have been reverted twice by two seperate users without a stated reason. To avoid edit warring I don't want to revert further, and I'm wondering if you have any advice. @Auguel: Hi. I'm surprised someone noticed! Thanks for trying to get transparent images. The category had over 2,000 images in it, so it was a long process :) I reverted the World Netball image to the transparent version. The only thing I can think of is that Markuss86 is trying to upload higher resolution images (for the World Netball one, it was simply reduced back due to WP:NFC guidelines). It's in my opinion that both of the transparent versions are just fine, but if not, I can remove the background for the World Lacrosse logo so that its at the higher resolution. – Pbrks (t • c) 03:05, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

@Resmise: I can't speak much to what Japanese sources are considered reliable. In many instances, you should just "know" whether or not a source is reliable. For example, (I know you already removed this) consider https://jpop.fandom.com/wiki/MADKID. You should ask yourself: "Who wrote this?", "Is the website/author reputable in regards to their journalistic works?", "Is it well-written?". The answer to these three questions for the aforementioned website is "A lot of random people (user-generated content)", "No, its a fan site", "I guess, but it's only, like, three sentences". So, you should conclude that, no, it is not a reliable source. Basically, look for well-known, reputable news outlets. Make sure the page has a real author (not fan writings), and make sure it is well-written.
Now, a reliable source does not necessarily help prove that a topic is notable. The following can be reliable sources (so they can be included), but they would not assert notability: interviews, press releases, articles with only a passing mention of the subject, articles published by an entity that has ties with the subject (e.g., a Nippon Columbia article about Madkid).
You can also check out Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources, a where common sources are listed. You can also check out Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard, a place where people ask if particular sources are considered reliable. If you are unsure about a particular source, there is a search bar near the top where you can see if anyone has asked about that source before. If not, you can start a discussion yourself. @USZSI: Hello. Locations such as these are usually assumed notable enough for inclusion in Wikipedia; however, the article was in very poor shape, which is why I sent it to the draft space. For one, please do not write in all caps and do not bolden headers. Also, some of the references are not reliable. For example, https://blessingotabor.blogspot.com/ is not a reliable source (it is a blog), and https://oapub.org/ has been deemed a predatory journal. Also, like I mentioned on your talk page, many of the references do not work. For example, the iproject.com.ng reference links to no information, all of the ikaworld.com links do not work at all, climateknowledgeportal.worldbank.org does not link to any info. Make sure that your references directly link to relevant information. I should not have to search through a website to find the information that is claimed in the article. The Most part of the sources for this page i'm trying to create unfortunately is not available in english.

I've found very little information about Peiropolis, I saw it is not in wikipedia (enlgish) but only in Portuguese. The primary source (citation) I have included (the pdf file GEOHERITAGE) was actually an article used in the graduation work. The authors made a deep research about the location of Peiropolis, showing the details and the importance that this location represents. The work is in PDF.

Well, I removed the other sources and changed  them for new ones. I din't know about the Wikifandom issue but i also replaced the previous source with a new one, though.

Be sure that every claim in the draft is supported by a source, which is best done by using in-line citation directly following the claim. @JakobJohnson1998: While some of the references are reliable, you need to show that the subject is notable enough for inclusion in Wikipedia by providing a decent number of sources that are all of the following: reliable, independent, secondary, and contain significant coverage of the subject. Fandom sites are not reliable; they're user-genreated content. Tournament result pages (smash.gg, ESL Play, Battlefy, Intelworldopen) do not contain significant (in-depth) coverage of the topic. The thinktechhawaii one is the homepage for that website... so I'm not sure what you're referencing there. Sector Six is advertising their product, so its definitely not independent. KontrolFreek has no information on their journalists and no editorial policy, so it's likely not reliable either. @JakobJohnson1998: Avoid any "other stuff exists" arguments. It's not that you can't use ESL, Battlefly, and Intel. They're fine for verifying information. However, they are not enough to demonstrate notability. Put another way: every source must be reliable, and you may use reliable sources (just about) whenever. @SBCornelius: Basically, most anything that the company has said about themselves (e.g. in interviews). For example, Because shop inventories can contain ten thousand items or more, the Thrilling platform contains technology to assist shop owners in digitizing large inventories, including the ability to use photography to detect an item's size and recommended price. Checker shadow illusion

The checker shadow illusion is an optical illusion published in 1995 by Edward Adelson, an American professor of vision science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The phenomenon features an image of a checkerboard with light and dark squares, partly shadowed by another object, such as a cylinder as in this illustration. The optical illusion is that the area labeled A appears to be darker than the area labeled B. However, within the context of the two-dimensional image, they are of identical brightness – in other words, they would be printed with identical mixtures of ink, or displayed on a screen with pixels of identical color.

@Itswikisam: as I mentioned on your talk page, it needs to better sourcing. You need to find references that have significant coverage (not just passing mentions) of the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. Also, TCVP isn't really a blog, it's more of a collaborative online chess variant encyclopedia which also doubles as a PBeM server. Hello Pbrks/Archives,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

ParserFunction errors

Forgive me, but my knowledge of template coding is practically nonexistent, and I'm curious. What is the function of a template like Template:Bracket builder/row, on the page of which nothing but an error message is displayed? Likewise User:Pbrks/sandbox/test and User:Pbrks/template2. @Deor: The error is there because I've asked it to compute an inequality, but the inequality depends on a parameter that has no value there. Hi Pbrks. Perhaps you can sort this out. I don't think a HISTMERGE is needed in either case, but at the same time there's also no need for two versions of the same article to be floating around. @Marchjuly: Hi, thanks for reaching out. I agree that there is no need for a history merge, as Falastur is the only user with substantial edits to these pages. I think the best course of action (or inaction) is to just wait out the six months for the drafts to expire or redirect them. In regards to notability, there are no SNGs covering esports (in particular, WP:NSPORTS explicitly excludes esports). Some users also consider WP:NORG for esports teams, but this has been debated, with no clear consensus. Generally, WP:GNG is the only relevant guideline. FYI I'm not really requesting upscale because of upscaling but rather because of the filesize reduction which DatBot does automatically when up or downscaling. @PhummyLW: No worries. One of the most difficult things to do on Wikipedia is create an article. The biggest thing is demonstrating notability, which is not as straightforward as you may think. In Wikipedia's view, having over 2 million subscribers and 100 million views (or really, any amount) doesn't matter. More or less, what we're looking for is significant media coverage of the subject. You'll usually want no less than three reliable, independent (e.g., not the company he works for), secondary (e.g., not his Twitter, webpage) sources that contain significant coverage of the subject (e.g., not just a passing mention) present in the draft/article. Three is the bare minimum, but you should have more if at all possible. Avoid using any sources that don't meet these criteria as much as possible. A good rule of thumb is, if reliable sources aren't talking about it, neither should we. There are a ton more policiess and guidelines to follow, such as keeping a neutral point of view, but this is one of the most important.

New draft page about Bezau Business Schools

Hi Pbrks, thank you for the fast check of the draft of Bezau Business Schools. However, I am a bit confused that you declined it, as it is simply a translation (just a bit shortened history section) of the wiki-page in German - see here: [Bezauer Wirtschaftsschulen] which is checked and worked on by several users (check version history). The references are given in the literature section and with the weblink. It is just a school, so this is not about advertisement etc. and the information are for all out there to see and it seems not to make sense to cite the given sources (given in the literature section) in the text - but if that is, what you critizise - I can do that, even though it seems to make no sense to me in this case? Also your remark, that there should be independent / secondary sources seems to make - in part - no sense, as we often use (also in sciences) data from a source, without having other sources. Especially in this case - with a public school - when the resources are from the public school, it seems to make no sense!? When I posted earlier, it appears to be a different version, as the round 1 seeds all were showing 2 instead of 2/3/4/5. I notice that you have made additional edits just now, and that has fixed the issue that i had with the incorrect seeding.
The other issue that needs to change is the additional text, which appears on the new one as Lower round 1 / Lower round 2 / Lower Final, as you currently have above. When I tried to replicate this with the following text it did not work:

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.

Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

Bracket merger for NBL23 finals

Hi Pbrks,

I noticed you make template brackets. I need help making a bracket for the 2022–23 NBL season page. I’m having issues making one since the bracket I want is complicated.

I have an example of two brackets which need to be merged.

Lastly, I need best-of-3 (3 legs) for the Semi Finals and best-of-5 (5 legs) for the Grand Final series. If you could help me or know someone for help, that would be greatly appreciated.

Sadly no, I just made a bracket with the bracket builder but I need a straight black line from seeds 3/4 to connect to the 2 seed match.

Big thank you! I fixed the bracket so it lines up better for the loser. In the future it could have a red loser line if it works.

@Alextigers: In regards to the first bracket, no, color is not supported for paths. Paths are usually only drawn for the winners of the round, and in a double-elimination bracket, it is understood that the losers from the upper bracket drop to the lower bracket (hence why they are literally under the upper bracket). I needed the 5-6 matchup on top because they verse the first seed in the semifinals. The first seed with the bye needs to be on top of the 2 seed. Plus it needed a bottom line to connect to the other play-in game.

@Alextigers: In my opinion, it is much clearer for the double-elim bracket to be in the correct order, rather than sacrifice that for the top seed to be on the top section of the semifinals. And like almost every other double-elim bracket on Wikipedia, we do not need connecting lines for the losers in double-elim brackets, it is understood that the losers in the upper bracket drop to the lower bracket. – Pbrks (t • c) 04:33, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Reminder for replacing image files

Hey, how's it hangin'?

Instead of creating a whole new page for images, you can overwrite them.

Here's how to take a screenshot on your computer: If you're on Windows, press Alt+PrtSc, it'll automatically be saved to your "Screenshots" folder in "Pictures"; however, if you're on Mac, press Shift+Cmd+3, it'll automatically be saved to your desktop.

I don't know the file type for Mac screenshots, but I know that Windows screenshots are typically saved as .png files, which was the file type of the images for subjects like Sodapoppin.

If you're taking screenshots directly on the YouTube page for these videos, I also recommend an extension called hyde, which allows you to hide YouTube's controls overlay (as well as that annoying shadow) in fullscreen by pressing Ctrl+M.

@L33tm4n: Hi. Actually, you cannot overwrite images that are not in the same file format. PNGs should not be used for images with photographic data. They should be used for icons, diagrams, etc, that could not be better stored in a vector format. Photographs, as well as screenshots from videos, should almost always be uploaded as a JPG file. For example, here is the comparison of PNG vs JPG when scaling:
Although these two images look identical when at full resolution, the PNG is much blurrier when scaled down. Moreover, the PNG is nearly four times larger in file size. See WP:PIFU information about when to use which file types when uploading images. – Pbrks (t • c) 15:21, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Image licensing

Hi Pbrks, let me explain my reasoning.

The Wikipedia globe's license is CC BY-SA, which states, in part (my emphasis): ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original. In other words, you cannot add copyrighted artwork to a CC BY-SA licensed image – any derivative of a CC BY-SA licensed image must again be CC BY-SA. Right? Repechage templates

Hi, first I want to thank you for your work on sport results templates, I use them a lot and I appreciate your work on synchronizing them. you redirected Template:Repechage1 into 4TeamBracket which is a bit different but that's manageable with removing seeds, etc. but my question is what's your plan for other repechage brackets? like Template:Repechage2 and Template:Repechage3, can you create such tables similar to your new change on Repechage1? if my points wasn't clear, take a look at this and this what we can do to make their repechage sections look similar? thanks Sports2021 (talk) 07:03, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

look at the tables above, the line between two boxes in the 2nd row is not a straight line, I believe that's fixable.
the space between the lead box (where we wrote Round 1 etc) and the results part is a bit bigger than the same space in the first bracket. (4 team normal bracket) also it will be great if there is a little space between those 2 repechage sections. I mean something like this

and another thing, those two tables above show the same width but if you read the code the first one is 220 and the repechage one is 195. Bracket Changes

Hi Pbrks,

I see it is you who has altered the templates for brackets recently, and I must say, I'm not a fan of it for darts events...

For example, if you look at 2022 Hungarian Darts Trophy, all the first round matches now look lopsided with that "dip" look, where when it was all straight as it used to be, it was much better, certainly looked more formal.

Any chance you could either sort it for the 24/48 team bracket, or make an alternative just for darts...?? JRRobinson (talk) 13:16, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

NRL brackets

The PagePlayoff bracket is not quite right, and I notice it's been used in other seasons. There's no connecting line from the semifinal winner to the preliminary finals. The one you've removed has it right, and should be used instead. Local Potentate (talk) 21:02, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

Surely it would have been a good idea to nominate the template for deletion first and reach a consensus, before changing multiple articles on various Australian sports with a misnamed (the 8-team system used in Australia is not a Page Playoff) variant template, especially as it is not of the same quality. A Wikipedia article may include a subject's cultural impact by summarizing its coverage in reliable secondary or tertiary sources. The content you added was more of a "this exists" type of thing. Repechage brackets

Hi, me again, I see another problem with Repechage brackets when I use firefox (still it works fine in chrome) take a look at this pic there is no line below that "Round 2" word. actually that line doesn't exist for Round 2, 3 and more when you use the bracket for more than one round. thanks in advance. @Sports2021: Unfortunately, that would require revamping a lot of things in the module. The 1px difference only affects the left side of the brackets, and otherwise everything else is aligned. Bracket template moves have orphaned /doc pages

It looks like you have been doing a ton of work on merging and fixing bracket templates, which is wonderful. It appears that some of your redirects and other changes have left a number of bracket template pages and /doc subpages orphaned and unused. You can see a list of some of them starting about 20 lines down at User:Jonesey95/unused templates, and there are more in the report at Wikipedia:Database reports/Unused templates/1 (you'll have to dig through to find them amid many other unused template pages). Pbrks, it's Allen. That vandal with the username starting with Syed disclosed his own personal information (phone number and email address) on your user page when he moved your user page, so could you request an administrator or an oversight to delete the vandal's edits on your user page history that contained the disclosure of another person's personal information from your user page history? Other than that, I'd like to think that I agree with Aidan721 in a WikiProject Baseball discussion that background colors for the playoff bracket couldn't agree with MOS:COLOR, and you said it comes to accessibility issues regarding background colors on those playoff brackets (background colors of red representing American League teams and blue representing National League teams that some user added prominently on postseason articles). I was trying to make a 12TeamBracket-MLB template on my sandbox if the red and blue background colors on a playoff bracket is going to work on this year's postseason article on Wikipedia (I copied the source from 16TeamBracket-MLB but it's hard for me to find where to remove unnecessary lines between the first and second columns that looks weird to me when I whitened some boxes on the first column that are unneeded for a 12-team playoff bracket). --Allen (talk / ctrb) 07:41, 2 October 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Pbrks/Archives,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Questions Regarding Reliable Sources

I had a quick question on reliable sources. If you get information straight from the person a biography is about, are you allowed to cite that as a source when writing about the information in question? Would previous employers on job information also count as a reliable source?

@Zekerocks11: Hello. Primary sources can be reliable sources, see WP:PRIMARY. However, we want to use primary sources sparingly and certainly do not want entire sections/paragraphs that are only sourced to primary sources. In general, if third-party, published, reliable sources have not covered a topic, Wikipedia likely should not cover it either. The big thing is that primary sources can be used, so long as they have been reputably published. YouTube and Twitter can almost never be used as sources, as they are user-generated content. "disambiguated" or "qualified" place names

Hi Pbrks. I have only just noticed that in March you moved about half the suburbs of the City of Playford (I haven't looked to see if you ventured wider) from "<suburb>, South Australia to just "<suburb>", with an edit comment of "unnecessary dab". I have not been very active on Wikipedia this year, so did not notice sooner - sorry this is a delayed response. Since the WP:NCAUST was watered down to allow this shortened naming, the convention has been to not move articles in either direction between using or not using the ", <state>", and leaving whichever form the first author chose. As you clearly believe that concision trumps precision and consistency in WP:TITLE, you might like to throw your two bits worth in to the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject South Australia#Unnecessary ", South Australia" in hundreds of place names. - Scott Davis Talk 12:31, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
