Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Paul W! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 941 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Internal communications

Hi. I'm impressed by the above as a beginning for a rich topic (OK, I have a vested interest). I'm on the Kingston PgDip/MA IC course at the moment, so I have references coming out of my ears. I'd like to undertake the radical overhaul that this article has been begging for, for a while. Have started drafting in my sandbox, and wanted to ask for your thoughts/input, before whacking this on top of the good work you've done already ... whenever you get time, there's no particular rush here. Cheers! Adhib (talk) 22:11, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Still pending. If you've moved on, no problem - I'll make a move later on in May. Adhib (talk) 18:58, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Just had a quick look at your sandbox version - looks very good, though it could with some editing to conform with the Wikipedia house-style (eg: on positioning of references and punctuation. If you let me know when this goes live, I'll be happy to oblige Paul W (talk) 16:34, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Paul - an interesting discussion is developing on Talk:Waterloo church and I wonder if you have anything to contribute to it. Cheers.--Peter I. Vardy (talk) 09:46, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on CoverItLive requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Constructing Excellence

No permission is needed, just go ahead and write an article, if you have sources. Trade publications are fine, if they are independently edited, and it is clear they are providing their own coverage, not just reprinting material sent them by organisations. If you want to ask me about specific ones, please do so. I need to apologize for the impersonality of the response on my talk p. , which was written on the assumption that it will be looked at by beginners and people outside Wikipedia--of course you know what I said very well already. I agree we need more articles on organisations of this sort--the difficulty has been in properly documenting them. I see from your user p. that you're in a good position to know about sources, so any help you can give in this area would be very welcome. DGG ( talk ) 18:45, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

London Wikimedia Fundraiser

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 23:40, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Peter Delme/Delmé

Hallo, I came across this trio while stub-sorting.

Note that sort keys should not include accented characters, as these file after z.

I added a hatnote to the first one, to make the other two accessible - we could alternatively have had a disambiguation page but I think this works OK.

I looked at Peter Delme, found it didn't exist, made a redirect from it, but then looked at incoming links and found there are several. I'll leave it to you to sort them out (eg in succession box for Gilbert_Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound,_1st_Earl_of_Minto). PamD 10:00, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, PamD, for the tip regarding the accented character (didn't know that!). I have now sorted out the hatnotes to the other two articles and the remaining links to the unaccented Peter Delme. I will leave the redirect page in case other articles link to the unaccented name. Paul W (talk) 20:04, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Saw your blog post

I saw your blog post about the CREWE group and PR involvement in general. I also saw that you linked directly to Wikiproject Cooperation. I suppose this is probably a pointless question, since you clearly already know about it and have had the opportunity to join if you wanted to, but...do you want to join? SilverserenC 00:35, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. As I have been frantically busy recently, I haven't really had chance to consider the CREWE group properly - though I have been skimming updates on the FB page. Things may be a little less rushed soon, so will look at it afresh. Paul W (talk) 09:31, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Fulham Bridge?

Hi Paul -

Very impressed by your contributions, particularly on London local history and construction.

I am very new to activity on Wikipedia, so please forgive the occasional solecism. I wanted to draw to your attention a possible inaccuracy in the article on Putney Bridge which you commenced. I wouldn't presume to change the article myself, though I have posted a version of the text below on the Talk page. If you agree there may be an inaccuracy we can possibly discuss how the article and its links might be revised.

This is what I wrote on Talk:Putney Bridge:

The naming of the wooden bridge in existence between 1729 and 1886 as 'Putney Bridge' may be disputed. Records in the PRO indicate that the name of the crossing was Fulham Bridge, and it was known as such to its proprietors: http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Fulham_Bridge_Proprietors http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=B11641

See this article by John Goodier in the spring 2008 newsletter of the Hammersmith and Fulham Historic Buildings Group, on pp. 7-8: http://www.hfhbg.org.uk/newsletters/Newsletter-18-Spr-08.pdf

There is evidence from contemporary engravings etc that the crossing was known as Fulham Bridge, and the existence of a gatehouse straddling the bridge at the northern bank suggests that it was named for its northern terminus. See here: http://www.britishmuseum.org/collectionimages/AN00804/AN00804767_001_l.jpg here: http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/Collections-Research/Collections-online/object.aspx?objectID=object-93013&start=68&rows=1 here: http://www.weissgallery.com/PrintObject.aspx?objectid=244120&dealerid=321 and here: http://www.weissgallery.com/FullScreenZoom.aspx?photos_zoom=WeissThephoto/Weiss2122010T1782.jpg

The present alignment of Fulham High Street deviates away from the main route over Putney Bridge: below the junction with New King's Road, Fulham High Street runs away to the E, finishing in a cul-de-sac adjacent to the riverbank. I surmise that the main road originally continued over the former Fulham Bridge, which was built on an alignment different from the 1886 Putney Bridge.

The construction of Putney Bridge in 1886, on an alignment which ended on the N bank some 100 yards W of the former alignment, led to some consequential changes to the arrangement of buildings in Fulham. All Saints Church was substantially rebuilt, also in 1886, as the structure, of medieval origin, could no longer be adequately protected from flooding. Quite why this option was taken, rather than the embanking of the north bank of the river (subsequently successfully undertaken), is unclear. The former vicarage of All Saints, which stood on the plot now called Vicarage Gardens, immediately to the W of the Putney Bridge approach on the N side, was demolished in 1915 and a new one constructed at 70 Fulham High Street on land belonging to Fulham Palace. Vicarage Gardens is referenced here: http://www.londongardensonline.org.uk/gardens-online-record.asp?ID=HAF069

All this suggests to me that a new page should be created for Fulham Bridge and associated articles (e.g. Putney Bridge, Fulham, Putney) edited accordingly.

Best regards -

Martyn

CIPR

I saw your note in the editing history about whether we should include each CEO under the Leadership section. When I started the leadership section, I didn't realize the position swapped out every year. Knowing that, I think it would be best to scratch the section and merge it with the Organization section. Just my quick remarks. Corporate 07:18, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Not CEO, President changes annually. Agree - scrap that section (none of the individuals are notable) Paul W (talk) 07:50, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
I would actually evaluate (just making conversation) on the basis of whether the President left a mark on the organization or had a distinctive leadership style, as oppose to if the individual is notable on their own, but if each President is only there for 1 year, that doesn't leave us with much rich information to give the reader.
Thanks for chipping in - I only gave it a quick pass. I guess my interest was drawn by their Wikipedia project. Corporate 02:48, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi Paul. I'm working on the Chartered Institute of Public Relations article in the hope we can bring it up to GA status. Would love any feedback you have. One of my primary concerns is the lack of available secondary sourcing for huge swaths of history and some of its organization, as well as what level of detail to cover awards, code of conduct, etc.. My interest was initially drawn due to their COI guidelines, but I want to work some of the articles I've been heavily involved in up to GA status. Corporate 20:50, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
I will try to help, but have a COI (I now undertake some training for the CIPR), so will have to contribute via the Talk page and let you use your judgement on what is appropriate to include. Let me know if you are looking for anything in particular on this subject (or anything related). Paul W (talk) 21:07, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
Oh congrats! Sounds like fun. I've done a couple trainings for PR agencies in the US, but we don't have anything official like what CIPR is doing. Mostly the US PR community seems to be becoming increasingly more ill-informed ;-)
In any case if you know of any good secondary sources that are missing - in particular about the big gaps in their history, I'll certainly include them. I was surprised CIPR didn't want to take a shot at it following their own best practices sort of speak. I enjoy writing about them because they just seem to be one of those companies with a lot of "good" in their soul. Corporate 22:37, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Samuel and Henrietta Barnett

Hi, I noticed that you reverted the edit I made last night to Samuel Barnett with a note that he's not a saint. I made the edit after noticing him and his wife (Henrietta) listed as the saints of the day (June 17) in wikipedia's Church of England calendar. I'm not British, and don't particularly know where I could doublecheck their sainthood quickly (phoning Lambeth palace isn't going to happen:)). As an anglican convert in the US know I can doublecheck the episcopalian calendar at satucket.com. Anyway, the Henrietta Barnett entry's much worse, and my time's limited.Jweaver28 (talk) 13:14, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I unreverted my edit when I saw a similar change on Henrietta Barnett's page. I have little knowledge of sainthood or the CofE's liturgical calendar, but I have let it stand for now in the hope that someone more knowledgeable will apply the right nuance to that aspect of the page (I thought saints had to be approved by the Pope). Paul W (talk) 13:59, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for the update. As far as I know, the Pope doesn't approve non-Catholic saints. In Protestant churches (as in the pre-1000 church) church councils (in the Episcopal Church of both ecclesiastics and laypeople every 2 years) determine those worthy of remembrance on their calendars. I find the CofE and other calendars offer interesting viewpoints of spiritual developments/responses in recent centuries.Jweaver28 (talk) 01:19, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

London Bridge waterworks

Hi - I see that you originally wrote the article on Peter Morice who built the original water pump under London Bridge. That article states that, following their destruction in the Great Fire of London, "replacements engineered by his grandson remained under the bridge until the early 19th century." The article on George Sorocold says that he "rebuilt London Bridge Water Works". In his book Chelsea to Cairo: Taylor-made Water Through Eleven Reigns and in Six Continents, Gwilym Roberts says that "In consequence (of the fire), the descendants of Peter Morris (stet) sold their rights and title in 1701 to a Mr. Soame, a goldsmith. He engaged George Sorocold to design and install a third waterwheel under the fourth arch". Several other sources refer to Sorocold installing the new pumps in 1705. Can you let me have your comments? My interest is that I am putting together an article on the Coultershaw Beam Pump near Petworth in West Sussex, which my sources refer to as being based in design on the pumps installed by Sorocold. I'd like to get the facts straight before I finalise the article (currently in my "sandbox"). Thanks for any help. -- Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 11:09, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

By Googling "Peter Morice" "George Sorocold", I have found the following hits which explain the background, although it's not clear who the grandson was and where his designs fit into the narrative:
  1. [1]
  2. [2]
  3. [3]
  4. [4]

It seems that there would be some merit in creating a standalone article on the London Bridge waterworks. -- Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 12:16, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
