"Unencyclopedic"?

Why have you deleted all of the material in the entry Dell Hymes that discusses his significance to linguistics, folklore, and literary theory? Granted, it could be rewritten in a less POV or conversational tone, but deleting it serves no purpose. If you don't appreciate his contributions, you shouldn't just delete them willy-nilly without putting up discussion about how or why they should be edited. I won't revert, because your edits in the first paragraph are useful, but I will reconstruct the article in a more encyclopedic tone based on the previous version. Bruxism - I agree with you about the 'willy-nilly' deletion of contributions. This user has done something similar with Morrisville State College, assumably because of its overly-POV content. POV content should be edited, not deleted. And no one should delete large bits of contributions without first discussing it on the talk page, perhaps with users who edit said article frequently and are, arguably, more familiar with the topic. 24.59.199.207 03:50, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

$1 FRN and like changes

Hi, I understand the ideas that your trying to convey. However, I think it would be much more suitable if the specifics of the $1 FRN and $2 FRN(I saw the $2 FRN article too) were put in the Federal Reserve Note article. I'm not sure how familar you are with U.S. currency, but I was thinking that the Federal Reserve Note article should have further information about specific series of notes and the changes that accomplied them. (E.G. Series of 1913 heading with information about first Federal Reserve Notes, Series of 1963 heading with info about 1st $1 FRN, Series of 1976 heading with info about the first $2 FRN, etc.) If you have any questions feel free to leave me a message. --Kurt 00:20, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi Paul, I see what you're doing with U.S. one dollar bill. Your additions enhance the article, but I suspect that you'll (metaphorically) paint yourself in a corner with the different type of notes (USN, FRN, SC,...) here... and, most likely, a similar repetition with each of the other denominations. May I suggest the following (I think I mentioned it in the AfD discussion, but my short term memory isn't the greatest, either):

Set up a section entitled U.S. currency types (or more appropriate name). In it put the description of the red seal USN, blue seal (or brown seal) SC, Hawaii notes, yellow seal GC, etc. with a general description of the various types (after all, do we need detailed repetition between the $1 US Note and the $5 US Note?) and representative pictures of various denominations.

This will cut down on the duplications, and - more importantly - "free up" U.S. one dollar bill (and others) for sections dealing with the evolution of the design over the years. Ditto the other denominations. It will be more challenging for you, but in the long run the results will be far more rewarding for you and more interesting for the so-called "average" reader (I'm partial to the large notes that were circulated prior to 1920 myself).

Coin renamings

Hi. I've just come across some of the coin renamings you've done in the last couple of hours. PLEASE STOP until you appreciate that articles are not named "British coin ..." and "English coin ..." at random — it is totally incorrect to rename, for example English coin Noble to Noble (British coin) - those coins were produced centuries before there was a British State to issue them. In most cases this is only a technicality (although intensely annoying to us UKians), but in the case of English coin Florin or Double Leopard which you've moved to Florin (British coin) there is also a British coin called the Florin produced 500 years later which also has its own article. Basic principle: NO COINS PRODUCED BEFORE 1603 CAN BE DESCRIBED AS "BRITISH", ALL COINS AFTER 1707 ARE "BRITISH", THOSE PRODUCED IN BETWEEN COULD BE EITHER. -- Arwel (talk) 00:07, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Numismatics

Thanks for your welcome. I appreciate feedback/help on my Wiki contributions. I've been active in the Numismatics WikiProject since I got here, and am working to re-organize (although no one has responded to my suggestions yet -- want to be the first? see Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics/Categories). I wasn't sure what Category:United States Mint engraver was exactly, so figured I wouldn't mess with it. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I believe it probably should be replaced completely by Category:United States currency designers and will update my category structure proposal accordingly.

When I got to your talk page, I noticed that someone else commented on your renaming coin articles. Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Numismatics/Style if you haven't already. First of all, I'm a ma'am, but am not offended. Second, I have been asking for feedback (and not getting it) on my category redesign proposal, so I'm not offended at all. I thought I might finally get feedback once I started making changes. This is not my preferred way of doing things, and I have directly asked for feedback on the Numismatics project talk page, and even your talk page. Anyway, please see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#Directors of the United States Mint if you would like to comment on that one. I guess I should add why I renamed the category in the first place. I was confused by it as a non-US collector. I didn't realize that the US Mint was an organization containing other mints. I still think it would be clearer to have a category just for branch mints, but I don't mind if others disagree. Also, I was not aware of the fact that engravers were necessarily designers. Is this true in other countries as well? I see you left the officers category, but put directors back as well. Shouldn't directors be a subcategory of officers? Shouldn't engravers also be a subcategory of officers? I'm not trying to make unilateral decisions, but I think a redesign is necessary in general (not necessarily anymore in the mints section), and I don't know much about US coins/mints. Thank you for your detailed reply. I'm from the US (Texas), but have always been more interested in world coins than local. The idea of different people having different "money" is what has always fascinated me about various currencies since I was a kid. Right now, I'm most interested in how currencies change over time (through regime change, inflation, monetary unions, etc), but have never had a source like this to really indulge my curiosity. I'm more of a collector than a numismatist, but am also an information junkie. I'm definitely an organizer (as you probably could've guessed), although anyone who's seen my house might wonder (my kids are 3 1/2 and 1 1/2). (I ought to add that to my user page, and will momentarily).

About currency forgery/money forgery, since "currency" includes coins, I'm not sure I understand your comment. I'm a little unclear on the technical distinction between currency and money though, so don't know which one it should be. Mom2jandk 19:30, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi again! In order to move around Argentina I think the best option is by bus. The main bus stations in Buenos Aires are in Retiro, Buenos Aires and Constitucion station, these are also the first and last station of the Buenos Aires Metro (subway, underground). You can find a map of this in [www.subte.com.ar] The bus trip to Montevideo is quite long (and currently the bridge between Gualeguaychú and Fray Bentos is been cut by argentinians complainig against the inaguration of two paper plants aside the Uruguay River, this could make the trip longer). Going by water (crossing the River Plate in a [www.buquebus.com Buquebus]) is a little more expensive but considerably more faster. I think the best option is a combination, by water to Colonia del Sacramento and by bus to Montevideo. About getting a job I would like to know what area you are interested in. Chévere is a word used in Venezuela (from what I know). In Argentina we talk a different Spanish, for instance instead of saying "tú" (you, informal treatment) we say "vos" and change verbs. Example: "tú tienes" (you have), but we say "vos tenés"... you see? My birthday is coming closer (by January 22) and I had been planning to travel to Córdoba (another province) where my uncle lives. Re: New Mexico

When I first moved to New Mexico I was pessimistic about the place. It was too hot, too cold, too dry, too high (I seriously couldn't breathe until I'd been here about a month). After living here almost 12 years, I love it and would not want to live anywhere else. If you're considering coming here, keep the adjustment period in mind. As far as hiking, I think the desert in general is a great place for it. In my opinion, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah are the best places for hiking I've ever been. I especially enjoy hiking in the Albuquerque area, because a short drive puts you in the mountains, near some volcanoes, or in the middle of nowhere with great views. Overall, my feedback for New Mexico would be: A++++ would live here again and will recommend to others.

Spoken Wikipedia

Hey fellow Wikipedian, I'm glad to see someone's interested in Spoken Wikipedia :) I've actually been too busy to record any articles lately, but I can help you with setting yourself up. You'll need a microphone, nothing special. You can pick one up from Radio Shack for under $30 that gets the job done. Make sure the mic connects with a 3.5mm jack plug (this connection is compatible with your sound card.)

From there, you can record yourself right in Audacity. You can use the slider bar with the microphone next to it to perfect the volume of your mic (it should be loud enough to be audible, but low enough to not clip or distort). When you speak into your mic, the "meters" in the upper right hand corner shouldn't go past 0db.

Once you get your volumes perfected, you can start recording yourself if you haven't already by pressing the big red record button. When you finished talking, just press the square stop button. To edit out sections, just simply highlight the part you don't want and press delete.

Now you just need to encode to Ogg Vorbis. You might want to check the encode quality first by going to File>Preferences under the File formats tab. I believe between 4 and 6 is a good level for Vorbis. Finally, go to File>Export as Ogg Vorbis and you're done :)

List of published collections of Doonesbury

Explain to me how this article does NOT conform to guides or styles in comparison to other articles that are also lists? I forked this off on purpose, as a long list of the books would detract from Doonesbury, unlike how the list works in Calvin and Hobbes, as there are far fewer books in the latter. Many thanks to Paul and Kimchi for your helpful hints. Kimchi's right, the base for this article was the front page of the organization's official site. I've just started to work on it, this is virtually a stub, and it will be continually improved and expanded over the next weeks. So I just ask other Wikipedians to be patient with me on this. One idea I have would be to compare and contrast Socialist Organizer's positions with the criticisms of other progressives; that means that arguments for and against S.O.'s positions would be explored. Do you all feel that this would help in dealing with the POV/advert concern? Thanks for your patience, just keep in mind, I'm new at this and still learning.

I made another template:

{{FS1037C}} is a template used to tag articles that contain content from this standard. {{FS1037C MS188}} is for articles that contain content from this standard and/or MIL-STD-188. They can be used to replace any "Source: " instances, links to Federal Standard 1037C in the references section or at the beginning of the article, instances of this category (the template puts the article in this category already), etc.

Now we can replace all the various incarnations without losing any information. I checked all the ones that were already in the category (phew!) and the rest could probably be done by a bot. — Omegatron 23:18, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, well, I mostly work out of Wikipedia:Featured article review, which you're welcome to help out in -- the specific instructions are on the page, but the gist of it is to review Wikipedia:Featured articles to see how they can be improved. One thing that would be wonderful is fixing up Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/FAs first -- we need the id number of each featured article from the revision it was promoted. It's easy to do (just find when it was promoted from the history of the talk page, then find the revision of the article closest to that date and copy the number from the URL), but it's tedious... I am mainly involved with the core topics subproject and hope to do more with geography.

In the core topics, we are slowly working on ensuring that about 150 topics are good enough. As we go along, we will add more topics, such as all the countries.

And now for something completely different - WP 1.0

Hello, good to hear of your interest in WP 1.0. Core topics is quite active, and is beginning to make a difference on some of these basic subjects. I help with that periodically (though I'm rather busy with work at the moment), and I'm also involved with Work via WikiProjects which has been going well too. The main aim here is to get all of the experts in each subject area to give us their suggestions for articles. There are two welcome side-effects: (1) As a result of our contact some projects get talking about quality issues and may even start a worklist, and (2) it really helps contact between editors and the WP 1.0 project generally, an important thing IMHO. So far we've contacted all of the groups, though we're still compiling the last few results. We are talking about making a second contact of all groups to ask each group for their own subject-specific list of "core topics," that work will probably start soon. If you're interested in helping with the next stage of contacting & compiling sign up with the project, we'll probably be talking about our plans in the next week or so. I think in the end all four sub-projects will contribute something to the early releases of Wikipedia on CD/DVD/paper. Walkerma 05:12, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

RE: Spoken Wikinews

Sounds Great! What you are describing, however, sounds more like the News Briefs rather than the Spoken articles. They're basically the same, however News Briefs puts a few of the most-recent articles together into one recording (see News Briefs). Hello from another U.S. politicians editor

Hello. I saw you on New Pages patrol when you created an article about a politicians. I also create a lot of articles on American politicians, as well as politicians from other countries, but there are so many of them, and it is great that you are helping with this project. By the way, I read your user page and I agree with your statement that Wikipedia is the future.

The main reason for this message is that many of your articles do not have enough redirects to them. What I mean is that some of the articles on the Congress sessions of the United States, and the Missing Encyclopedic Articles pages, have the full names of the politicians; their first name, middle name and last name. For example, Thomas Manson Norwood had some pages linking to it and should have redirected to Thomas M. Norwood. I fixed this, but this might be a lot of problem for some other articles. I'm going to go through your contributions to see if the full names of the politicians you wrote about have pages linking to them, but it would be great if you could help with this, and remember this problem in the future. Should Irish-born political figures that are in Irish-American politicians category be left in the Irish-American politicians category because some politician could be Irish born but be Scotch-Irish and not Irish-American? 75.3.4.54 19:10, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

I don't think Scottish should be put into the Irish-American politican category and I think if people of Scottish ancestry are in the Irish-born category, than people Irish-born of Irish ancestry should also be put into the Irish-American politican category as a distinction of there ethnicity. 75.3.4.54 01:34, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

State judge categories

I think these are a good idea, but before you create any more I think it's better to name them as "X state judges," or perhaps even better, "X state court judges," to ensure that federal judges who happen to be based in that state are excluded. Thanks for the comments on my talk page. I'm open to making the portal focus just on the Federal government, with a separate one for state/local. What's wrong with categories?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but why are you removing New Hampshire Categories from their subjects? Category:People from New Hampshire and Category:Manchester, New Hampshire are POPULATED with articles and are entirely legitimate and useful. Please explain why they are "redundant," as your summaries note.
