Speedy deletion of The Planet Wilson[edit]

A tag has been placed on The Planet Wilson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics.

No thyself[edit]

Hi, before I deleted the article it had been tagged by another editor as having multiple issues: confusing, dead end, unreferenced, unwikified and probable copy-and-paste from a possibly copyright source. I deleted the article because it did not provide independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts or show that it meets the music notability guidelines. It didn't even have a link to the group's Wikipedia article, let alone any proper sources. Note that for the article to merit its own article, you need more than a tracklist, since that doesn't of itself explain why the album is notable. Notability isn't transferred; an album doesn't become notable just because it's by a notable group. They may have a roadie, but that doesn't make the roadie notable Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:47, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There may be a case for arguing that an LP by a notable band would be notable, because it is likely to be an important aspect of their history and musical style. Sounds OK apart from Amazon, since
  • it's a commercial site, looks spammy
  • Reviews by professional music journalists confer notability, those from Joe Public don't, especially where the "reviewers" have actually bought the record, so are hardly independent

  • See Wikipedia:Notability (music): "In general, if the musician or ensemble is notable, and if the album in question has been mentioned in multiple reliable sources, then their officially released albums may have sufficient notability to have individual articles on Wikipedia." I would have thought that an LP and a roadie are not comparable, so I find the argument above illogical. Snowman (talk) 15:32, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't be necessary to use hang-on, there should be a grey button to press which will set up the contest page. The Stub article on No Thyself was in a much worse state than I had imagined. I have done some tidy up work and added one reference. I hope that User PaukiPKK will be able to add information from the references that he has mentioned including adding in more information in the infobox. I plan to visit the article most days this week to help new users with Wiki formatting. Was that an image of the LP cover that was deleted as well, if so can it be un-deleted, if it can be considered fair use on the article? Snowman (talk) 14:57, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quote or re-write it in your own words[edit]

I think you are getting to know a bit more of the Wiki mark-up code. There are also a lot of guidelines to keep the Wiki consistent across many pages, and there are also restrictions of the copyright laws. Because of copyright laws it is better to re-write what is in a copyrighted source than quoting it, so that you are not copying portions of it; see Wikipedia:Do not include the full text of lengthy primary sources. Hi there Pauki. You recently left a message at Chzz's talk page, but since he's not active atm I'll try to answer here. You bring up IMDb. Well, here it's not considered a reliable source, especially as far as establishing notability goes. You might use it to source facts, but since the site is so extensive (and user-submitted) they have info on people who will almost never be notable as far as WP standards go. If Davis has been written about in things like the BBC online though, then it won't matter. Those are definitely reliable sources, and depending on the number and depth of detail (can you shoot for 2-3 reliable sources that give at least two paragraphs to her?) would help you out a lot. Hey Pauki, thank you very much for your not one my talk page. It's great to see such a well-reasoned and thought-out rationale for why an article deserves inclusion in Wikipedia :). The relevant guideline is WP:CREATIVE, criterion #3: "The person has created, or played a major role in co-creating, a significant or well-known work, or collective body of work, that has been the subject of an independent book or feature-length film, or of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews."

Your sources verify that Davis co-created Game On, so the question is whether or not Game On has been the subject of "an independent book....or of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews." I did a few cursory searches and did not find much, but as you said Ms. Davis comes from the pre-internet era, and it seems likely that multiple articles and reviews about Game On were written and exist offline. So, Ms. Davis probably meets this requirement. The problem is that if we created the article and someone nominated it for deletion, we would be hard-pressed to prove that she meets the requirement.

To me, the main issue is that while we may know quite a bit about Ms. Davis' work, nothing has been published about her as a person. I agree that its probably unfair, but Davies has had an entire book written about him, while Davis just doesn't seem to have that level of coverage. The article says where she went to university, but are there any sources to back this up? I'm afraid that we may not know enough about her to write a substantial article. Has she done any interviews?

Since you've put a lot of work into the article, I'll leave it up to you. We can either move it into the mainspace and risk deletion (frankly, I think it's likely that it will be deleted), or we can leave it for now and hope that Ms. Davis receives more coverage in the future, as her career seems to be continuing. If you can turn up any old print sources, that would be great as well. Let me know what you think, and I'll try to make it happen. I would hate to see you put more energy into this article only to see it deleted. If you don't mind me inserting a shameless plug here, Wikipedia always needs more reasonable and intelligent editors like you, and I am highly impressed by the formatting and writing quality on your article, so I hope you stick around. The article was right on the line before, and I think your new additions, especially that critical appraisal, have pushed it over - it looks good and I encourage you to resubmit it. I also agree that once the new show comes out we'll likely see more sources. All the credit is yours - you've worked really hard on this! Wow, great job continuing to work on this! There's nothing wrong with having some discussion of the show on Davis' page, since this helps the reader understand her work. If you want to go more in depth, making a new article is a good idea - the more the merrier :). Also, if you're interesting in developing Davis' article more, you might think about adding an infobox to summarize information about her.
