New Wikiproject!

Hello, OwenBlacker! I saw you recently edited a page related to the Green party and green politics. There is a new WikiProject that has been formed - WikiProject Green Politics and I thought this might be something you'd be interested in joining! So please head on over to the project page and take a look! Thanks for your time. Me-123567-Me (talk) 18:43, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Me-123567-Me: Thanks for letting me know, but I'm pretty busy with WP:WikiProject AIDS and WP:WikiProject Former countries at the moment so I'm not likely to be able to put much effort in on Green topics, I'm afraid. I'll drop in when I can, but I doubt that'll be very often, sorry. Good luck! 😊 — OwenBlacker (Talk) 21:43, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

MOSDAB

Hi OwenBlacker, Really, time to stop pushing your desired edit through against consensus (of the MOS). You could at least try to justify per the explicit exception wording (3rd time I've suggested). Hey, you may want to check out other dab pages, but just drop trying to push without recognising it is against consensus, and we work by consensus around here. Hope that helps, I really am dropping this now until there's more opinions. Widefox; talk 14:22, 27 January 2017 (UTC) [reply]

@Widefox: I don't believe it is against consensus — I don't think the issue has been considered. There is no explicit exception wording, as I pointed out. I know we work on consensus here — I've been an editor for a similar length of time to you; you don't need to patronise me over a discussion I thought we were both having in good faith. If you would like to continue with this conversation, we can do it on Talk:MD — where I should point out you appear to be the one wikilawyering and opposing consensus (and WP:BRD, as has been pointed out). Kindly continue the debate there, not here. — OwenBlacker (Talk) 14:27, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed - more opinions have solved it. I was wrong. Sorry and thanks, as hopefully we'll get this sorted in MOSDAB now. (see talk, let's continue on dab talk) Widefox; talk 14:34, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Principality of Erfurt

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Principality of Erfurt you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of 10W40 -- 10W40 (talk) 14:01, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@10W40: Awesome; thanks for letting me know. Are you done with your first pass? If so, I can take a look at the comments you've raised and either make corrections or discuss them with you further :) — OwenBlacker (Talk) 13:58, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead and reply now. My comments are mostly about reducing the use of German and extending the lead section. Many readers will read only the lead, so this section should include all the important points you make. 10W40 (talk) 15:23, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article Principality of Erfurt you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . OwenBlacker, I'm sorry that your GA reviewer is unable to continue work on the review. You might want to post a request at WT:GAN to see whether someone would be willing to take over the existing review. If not, you can either wait for the posted second opinion request to bear fruit—though it may not bring in someone who wants to conduct the rest of the review—or the nomination can be put back into the pool of articles waiting for a review with no loss of seniority. Missing lead

This is a few months past due, but I just discovered the issue today: what prompted you to tag Catholic Church and HIV/AIDS with a {{lead missing}} template? The article had a very well-developed two-paragraph long lead section. It was missing a sentence that contained the specific words "Catholic Church and HIV/AIDS", but an exact recapitulation of the article title in the lead is not required. (See WP:BEGIN.) WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 18:49, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@WikiDan61: I agree that a lead doesn't need to catalogue all the points in the article, but the pre-heading section is so long that it doesn't all fit on my laptop screen. The point I was hoping to make was that the lead could do with being substantially more concise. — OwenBlacker (talk) 21:29, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This is a long and complex article. A lead of three paragraphs is not unduly long. (WP:MOSLEAD recommends up to four paragraphs.) But if you truly feel the lead needs to be pared down, the template for that is {{lead too long}}. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 21:33, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiDan61: Oh indeed. But they're very long paragraphs. A much shorter lead would definitely be helpful. — OwenBlacker (talk) 22:05, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure, given the content of that template, that it is the most appropriate tag, but I've tagged it thus nonetheless :) — OwenBlacker (talk) 22:07, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Typography in article title

While doing cleanup in album articles I came across a page move you performed way back in 2005:

Intergalactic Sonic 7’’s → Intergalactic Sonic 7″s

I can see the paired single-quotes are admittedly weird, but I'm a MOS:CURLY advocate and don't like seeing non-standard quotes. This seems like a typographic choice to me. Or was there an issue with putting a double quote in a title? (I was going to list this at Requested Moves.) – Reidgreg (talk) 17:41, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Reidgreg: Hey, thanks for pinging me. The change I made wasn't to a smartquote, but to a double-prime symbol — the title is referring to 7-inch vinyl. WP:TITLESPECIALCHARACTERS has the prime symbols down as "avoid them", but doesn't forbid them and doesn't include them in the list of forbidden characters (so the same as a double-quote would be). It's a bit pedantic, but 7" is incorrect whereas 7″ is correct here. Does that make sense? :) — OwenBlacker (talk) 18:33, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I'm glad I asked. (I should be more familiar with this!) I guess I grew up with metric and never realized it should be prime and double-prime for feet and inches. Boy, you learn stuff every day on the wiki. Thanks for the info! – Reidgreg (talk) 19:45, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Reidgreg: Haha, it's a "benefit" of growing up in the UK during the generation or 2 where the changeover between Imperial and metric was occurring. No problem; have a good weekend :) — OwenBlacker (talk) 19:52, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Paine Ellsworth: No problem; I hope you don'think I was too standoffish in my reply. It was late and I was grumpy, so sorry if I was an arse about it :) — OwenBlacker (talk) 14:20, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And here I also thought I was being less than friendly. You did the right thing, which made me go back and check BRINT. I slightly altered that bullet and hopefully it won't be misread by others as I misread it. Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing. Your participation in the contest and contributing articles on British women from your area or wherever would we much appreciated. Thanks.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Bobbi Campbell at the Clinical Nursing Conference on AIDS at NIH, October 7, 1983.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Bobbi Campbell at the Clinical Nursing Conference on AIDS at NIH, October 7, 1983.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, OwenBlacker. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. language tagging question

Hi Owen- Just curious, what is all that language tagging on place- and family names for in Fribourg#Middle_Ages? Eric talk 13:56, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Eric: It helps assistive technologies (such as screenreaders) handle text where the language is different from the language of the page-content. As it mentions at MOS:LANG, Non-English words or phrases should be encased in {{lang}} and there's a little more information at Template:Lang/doc#Rationale. — OwenBlacker (talk) 13:59, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I thought it might be something like that. Thanks for letting me know. Does the MOS call for that on proper names? Eric talk 14:04, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, Eric. The MOS is not explicit around proper names, but the accessibility rationale still holds, so I add it and others don't. I don'think I've seen anyone remove it, though — the disbenefits are minimal, after all. — OwenBlacker (talk) 14:05, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
