New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 04:43, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm

Orangemarlin...I keep seeing your name pop up in different places, and what I've learned from seeing your contributions is that you are definitely here as a content builder, content protector, article starter, and article protector. You seem to have a knack for protecting Wikipedia from fringists, quacks, and their ilk. At the same time, I can clearly remember being very terse with you in the past. Allow me to explain myself. I'm an admin. (Deserved or not is irrelevant at the moment :-) I'm not, by any stretch, an article person. I'm a meta-person. My niche is, as I see it anyway, is as a "content defender", meaning I defend, to the end, those particular editors that decide to keep Wikipedia clean from fringists, etc. Where did I get a negative opinion of you? I can't find it in diffs, but I remember it. But I'd like switch. I'd like to be an admin-defender for you (not that you need it necessarily, but it surely wouldn't hurt). All this rambling to say, is that I'd like to put water under the bridge of wherever you and I crossed paths where we've given each other bad impresssions (as I'm sure my own ill will feelings towards you are certainly mutual)... I've had a negative opinion of you, I freely admit it, and I'm not sure where it came from, but I'd like it to go away. I firmly believe that article builders/defenders are the core of Wikipedia, and I firmly believe that you are one of those core article building/protecting editors. I'm not one of those myself, but with block/delete/protect buttons, however the hell I earned them and by whatever fluke, I can at least help in my own small way. Are you willing to help me reconcile? (Again, I know that I have a negative opinion, but I can't find out the roots of it. I'm willing to let bygones be bygones. Help me out?) Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 22:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

DUDE!!!!! You're now giving me work. I've got to find one of those 15,000 edits where you and I might have battled. Or I could take the easy way out, and say, "sure, I really appreciate it." I'm going to be lazy.  :) Bygones are definitely bygones. Hell, I'm actually quite loyal to User:B, whom I once considered a Creationist admin, and now, well I still think he's a Creationist admin, but he's an honorable one. He also hates racism as much as I do, so he gets like 47.212 points out of a possible 50 for being a good guy. Anyways, honestly I don't remember if we battled, but I do think of myself as builder of this project. I don't like the political crapola, and stay out of it mostly. I just prefer to focus on building articles into good shape, keep the anti-science fringe element under control (but am willing to listen once to one argument from them--the tendentious crap doesn't make me happy). Anyways, thanks. OK, to be honest, I'm not that lazy, and I'm going to dig this up.OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 22:29, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Excellent. I really want to improve my "image" of you. I honestly don't remember what it was, but I "vaguely" remember telling you that you were "always sarcastic" or some such. Let me know what you find. Either way, I'll be glad to move along and help you "protect/build" this insane website. Ask Malleus if you need my credentials for protecting article builders. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 22:33, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I am always sarcastic. LOL. OK, I'm not getting what you want to do. Mentor me? Not going to work so well. It's probably my arrogant, narcissistic self image which will not allow that. Protect me? I'm sorry but that might be hard work. It's kind of a 24/7 responsibility. Learn from me? I make a poor teacher. So????? I'm confoozled. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 22:58, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I've been known to be rather sarcastic myself. No, I have no intentions of mentoring you. that would be rather presumptuous, seeing as how you've been here longer than me. Protect you? No, not necessarily. I'm merely suggestion that you (and I) bury the hatchet (wherever it is). I have a fondness for article builders, because I'm not one, and freely admit it. You are one. And you defend articles. I'm not trying to "learn from you" either, as you and I, both being rather bullheaded, would probably disengage as soon as one or the other of us tried to tell the other what to do. I'm simply trying to clear my own perceptions of you, which, right or wrong, have bgeen negative. (probably wrong). Anywho, all that to say, best of luck to you in your editing. You are now on my watchlist (obviously), and I'll watch for your article contribs from now on to "protect" you from fringists. Hope you don't mind :-) If you find the diffs where you and I butted heads, let me know! I am certain they exist, but I can't find them either....Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 23:06, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Sounds perfect. Regarding the diffs, I gave up. I had no clue when to search to narrow the number of diffs. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 23:09, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
As much as it's going to bug me, I can't find the diffs either, although I know they exist. Either way, I'm glad you agree to call them bygones. Keep up the good work (and by "work", I of course mean article building/protecting/defending). Let me know if you need any admin assistance from this point forward. Cheers, (which means I'm a heavy drinker :-) Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 23:18, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

<outdent>All that to say, are there other "article builders" that you know of that could use admin assistance? I meant that to say, for whatever reason, your name crossed my mind, as someone that could perhaps use an additional "eye". Any others that I can approach? I'm serous in my intentions. If you look at my last thousand contribs, they are all talkpages/metapages/wikipages. I'm not an article builder. Therefore, I have an enormous respect for those that are article builders/starters/defenders. Names? (and, if you're watching this, and are an "ally" of Om's), let me know! I'll happ8ily defend you as well. Again, ask Malleus. My mission on Wikipedia is to defend article writers/builders/defenders. Let me know where I can assist. Last revert

To explain that - I wrongfully removed a sourced section of Guettarda's edit, and had replaced it - the bit about "While similar to some of her beliefs..." Also, I misread the source, the "false dilemma" stated by Picard was not between science and religion, but between intelligent design and evolution. Parsing words, maybe, but important to get right. FCYTravis (talk) 07:03, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. This debate is heated enough, and we don't need to get it over the boiling point. We all agree on the big picture, and in cases like Robert J. Marks II, it's pretty clear that a person is an out-and-out ID proponent. I just think we need to be extremely careful at the margins - with people like Picard - not to go overboard in damning them with the DI brush where the situation is far murkier and there's no certainty that they're actually in favor of the DI/ID agenda. FCYTravis (talk) 07:10, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Organised attempt to change POV of AIDS articles

Thought you might like to be made aware of this discussion on the "AIDS Myth Exposed" forum. Trezatium (talk) 11:40, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

User "Paul King" ("PaulKing (Mxxx Hxxxx) <aimulti_at_aimultimedia.com> wrote..." [misc.mailarchive.ca/health.aids/2005-05/0685.html]) from the "aidsmythexposed" msn group linked by Trezatium writes that at Wikipedia he has "spent a vast amount of time learning the inner workings and establishing credibility as an editor. I cannot discuss more here as this is an open forum but if there are four or five people willing to devote a reasonable amount of time over four or five months I can teach them how to make a radical change to Wikipedia on 'AIDS' and related topics." "Paul King" is the pseudonym of a long-time AIDS denialist activist and head of the "Dissident Action Group" (DAG) in Los Angeles. I have taken up this matter with arbitration, as even the non-AIDS edits of this agenda editor are problematic. RetroS1mone (talk) 17:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

What's the procedure?

You gave someone a final warning here. I subsequently reverted the same behavior here. I'm not sure whether to leave another warning or not. What do you think? Is there a warning that says "We really mean it this time"?16:17, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Ferrylodge (talk)

If another editor has placed a final warning, and there is further clear vandalism, you should then post to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Numerous admins watch the posts, and then place escalating blocks. That's why it's important to place warnings on the page of anonymous vandals. I've seen vandals who have made 20 different edits, and no one placed the final warning. The next edit after the final warning is blockable. I've seen vandals who vandalize after blocks too. I think blocks serve as final warnings, but that's up to the admin. I usually place a final warning even if I see a block, then post to ANI/Vandalism. I hope this helps. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 16:55, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
I just looked over their vandalism. You don't even have to post to the User talk, just do an IPvandal posting to ANI/Vandalism, and reference "vandalized after final warning." No diffs are necessary. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 16:57, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I had season tickets from 92-97. The day after the World Series, I had to jump in my car to drive back to California, where I had taken a new position. Since I had not slept that night (remember, 80,000 people screaming and yelling?), I was exhausted. I think I stopped in Orlando, said screw it, and went to sleep. In 03, I caught a bunch of games. I have more Marlins paraphernalia than you can imagine. I love wearing my 97 World Series hat to Dodger games, just to annoy them!!!! OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 00:14, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

People still curse the name of Jose Mesa. And to think, I thought the Marlin part was because you were a bit of a fisherman. Baegis (talk) 01:02, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

more Tinkling...

All I'll say about the Marlins is that I'll believe they're gonna pay Hanley Ramirez $70 mil when I see it. Looks like they jumped off the Dontrelle Willis bandwagon just in time though, doesn't it? I was leading my 16-team league... until Rafael Furcal's back started to hurt. Now he's going on the DL Tuesday, and if that wasn't enough, Erik Bedard imploded tonight on me. At least I had Josh Hamilton too - he got 3 RBIs off Bedard. Damn. I need a drink.

Anyway... for welcome templates, I made my own welcome template several months ago using hints from the list of the Welcoming Committee. I transclude it onto the talk pages of new users with an abbreviation in TextExpander. TextExpander and PTHPasteboard save my bacon around this place.

Friendly does automated welcoming instead of Twinkle. You have two choices with Friendly, as you do with Twinkle: a gadget in your user preferences, which you can't customize, or installation in your monobook.js file, which you _can_ customize. Try using it as a gadget first, to see if it suits you and does what you want it to do. If you like it but want to customize it a little, let me know and I'll play around with it a little to see if I can help. I don't mind - I'm kind of interested in JavaScript and wikicode and I like to mess around with my .js and .css from time to time. I fixed my .css file so I don't see the big orange message bar, and it's added years to my life. :-)

Right now 3RR reporting isn't one of Twinkle's things. I don't think Twinkle is suited for it either, because 3RR is so much more involved than AFD listing, the most complex task Twinkle performs. Listing an AFD is basically placing three templates, one of which contains text entered by the user, on three specific pages. 3RR is only one template, but it requires many more inputs - there are the userlinks for the user you're reporting, the page involved and its links, proof of the 3RR warning, the version reverted to, and the four+ diffs. It also takes quite a bit more time to complete correctly than an AFD nom does, so I don't think it's a Twinkle-type task. I could be wrong, though, and you could make a feature request.

Let me know if you need anything else! - KrakatoaKatie 03:39, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, I guess there are things that Twinkle doesn't do. Bummer. I jumped off the Willis bandwagon last year. The Marlins sure know how to find young talent.OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 15:18, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

You know, I usually know when I'm being uncivil. In that case, I was making an editorial comment about comparing AIDS denialism to Astrology, which the editor was trying to do by adding a category. Wow. I've never heard of that before. Of course, I'm not a shrink, and try not to play one on Wikipedia. I'll need to read the COIN more closely (and I note certain POV-warriors involved), but IMHO, if it's not listed in DSM-IV with diagnostic criteria, it does not exist. I'll try to look at this before this evening (California time). OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 18:39, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

RFA Thanks

Thanks for your participation at my recent Request for adminship. I’ll keep your concerns in mind as I continue to work within the project. I hope you find I live up to your expectations of administrators. Best, Risker (talk) 16:44, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Question

Is there something I can do to improve the tone of our relationship? I understand we disagree. But I think we could be respectful towards one another. If I've been disrespectful towards you, I am sorry. Bryan Hopping T 21:07, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Not until you drop the allopathy-push. You're only support is from CAM POV-warriors. If what you are saying is true, that is you're going to medical school (or osteopathy school), promoting a POV that is only supported by CAM types is offensive. Every physician, myself included, who edits this project thinks you need to stop. Pigheadedness is not an admirable character trait for a future physician. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 21:11, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
I hear your request. Let me ask two questions: Do you feel strongly that even on pages, for example the NRMP page, where the organization uses the term in its own publications, that the word "allopathic" should also not appear? Do you feel strongly that I should not be included even on pages, for example Osteopathic medicine in the United States, where most of the sources use the term? (I am asking sincerely, so that I can understand your position.) Bryan Hopping T 21:15, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
You are attempting to violate WP:NPOV by giving undue weight to relatively few publications that use allopathic as a descriptive term. If you want to mention in certain articles that allopathic is used to describe certain groups of physicians but is consider pejorative by the vast majority of physicians, be my guest. But to tendentiously push your POV on every medical article is tiresome. i will look at the article that you're discussing. But no osteopathic physician I know calls me an allopath. In fact, until I came here, I never saw the term. This quote, "the broad category of medical practice that is sometimes called Western medicine, biomedicine, scientific medicine, or modern medicine," says it all. To those of us who practice these type of medicine, it is the ONLY medicine there is. The rest of the crap out there is not medicine, just fakery. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 21:22, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps if we came to an agreement on which articles it would be acceptable, we'd both be happier. My other concern is quotes. When quote directly from a source, as is done several times in the MD/DO comparison article, the author uses the term. For example, in this section Comparison_of_allopathic_and_osteopathic_medicine#History. Is this type of usage acceptable or unacceptable? Again, I'm asking sincerely to try to understand if there are some cases in which you feel the use of the term is appropriate, i.e. within quotations. Bryan Hopping T 21:33, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
This discussion should be elsewhere. Make a proposal more than to me. Antelan, Calisber, MastCell, and a few others should participate. Set up a daughter page on your talk, something like User talk:Hopping/Allopathy wording. We could all discuss it there. At this point, I am not in favor of using Allopathy anywhere, except in the homeopathy article.OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 21:56, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm happy to have a broader discussion. I was really interested in getting your personal opinion on the issue. That's why I am asking here. But if don't want to discuss here, that is okay with me. I hear you saying that you are not in favor of using the term "allopathy" outside of article on homeopathy. Does this include the term "allopathic medicine" ? I would assume yes, but I want to ask to be sure. Answer on the new page you've created, if that's your preference. Bryan Hopping T 22:06, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I have left a couple messages for Bryan Hopping regarding this issue. I share your concerns about his behavior and would appreciate being notified if any further discussion warrants my participation. -- Fyslee / talk 19:15, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

stub

Can you clarify what the "stub" tag is for? I was unclear as to why Allopathic medicine was intentionally short, even after reading the discussion page. --Wiki11790 (talk) 22:26, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

You can find more information at WP:STUB. As for this article, I didn't write it, and I have no clue why the original author wants it stubbed. I would bring up your concerns on the article's talk page. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 22:33, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

advice

I forget the policy - is this the kind of joke people are welcome to make on their userpages, or is this the kind of thing that gets reported to AN/I or Jimbo? Slrubenstein | Talk 10:30, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Take it to User:El C. He seems to know how to deal with it. I know that the use of joke regarding Hitler is offensive enough that it's been dealt with in the past. I seem to recall that even an admin was taken to task. But El C will, if it's offensive, take care of it. Keep me posted. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 12:36, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Human evolution

Hi

You removed my contribution to the article human evolution. Why exactly? AFAIK I gave references to the added text, for instance my dissertation on the history of paleoanthropology (Bender 1999). Anyway, this article should be worked out, since many information are just incorrect. For instance, the first description of Australopithecus africanus was in 1925, not 1924 (1924 was the discovery of this fossil). And the expression "homo sapiens" should be written "Homo sapiens" in a paleoanthropological article.

What should I do now? How kind of references you expect I quote in the article?

Voicing your Opinion

Hi, I noticed the comment you left on Majorly's page and was wondering if I may comment my view on the situation? Thanks, Dusticomplain/compliment 22:00, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

You may. But don't expect me to think that enabling racists is a good thing. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 22:10, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I took a quick review of what happened and I am neutral of the situation. Everyone has the right to voice his/her opinion however, you must be respectful or at least voice your opinion in such a way. By calling someone a "pig" your actually being incivil and disrespectful. Enabling racism isn't a good thing, but by getting out of control and risking a block isn't good either. I suggest putting this beind you and moving forward, ignoring the individual(s), and keeping your cool. Sorry for intruding but I thought I might offer a little bit of help. If you have any questions, ping my talk page. Happy editing! Dusticomplain/compliment 23:00, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Wrong. Racism is uncivil, and, therefore, can be treated in any manner chosen. There is no reason to treat a racist, anti-semitic pig anything but uncivilly. Again, I do not know if DHMO is an overt racist, but he enables it because he lacks the critical thinking to understand that White Pride is a racist, anti-semitic organization, not so say I, but so say independent sources. But, as long as he leaves me alone, I won't be bothered by his overt or naive support of racism. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 23:05, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
