Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Username: newbie[edit]

Hi,

I guess I chose my username based on the company I work for. I saw the page for NEXEN on wikipedia and all fo the information was incredibly inaccurate and false, even down to who the CEO is. I thought, perhaps wrongly, that by having a username similar to that of the company, it would indicate that the edits came from a reliable and accurate source. If this was a bad thing to do, I would be happy to change it. Whatever I can do to best contribute to wikipedia, and ensure the information about my company isn't all lies, works for me.

Please let me know and I will comply with your request.

Sincerely,

M

Hello - and welcome! Wikipedia:Business' FAQ should give you all the information you need! Be careful about what you put in to the article - don't remove any libellous information, as it could be construed as 'PoV-pushing', that is, pushing your company's point of view. You should also request a username change at WP:CHU. Remember that your account is personal - an account cannot be used by a company or organisation, only by individual. You might also like to take a look at our conflict of interest guidelines, and of course (and most importantly) our welcome page. Any questions, simply place {{helpme}} anywhere on this page, and ask your question below. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry 18:59, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • In fact, the policy is that clearly defamatory information may be removed by anybody. - Mike Rosoft 19:14, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help - both of you. I have submitted a name change request.Nexeninc

I am afraid your contributions read way too much like a promotional piece (Wikipedia articles are supposed to bee written in a neutral, objective manner); please see our guidelines on possible conflict of interest in writing about your company or another topic you are directly connected with. In addition, some of the text seems to be directly borrowed from the company website, which is against the Wikipedia copyright policy. Wikipedia articles are GFDL licensed; unless you are the copyright holder, or have received his permission to release it under that license, you can't include it in the article. (Brief quotations, with proper attribution, are acceptable; see our fair use policies for more details.)

May I suggest that you go back to the previous revision], and just correct the factual inaccuracies without including all the marketing content?

HELP Hi Mike,

Now some other admin has taken over and is adding all sorts of warnings on the page. Can you please just revert the page and allow me to remove the lies and fix the name of our CEO?

Thanks!!

Content Fixing[edit]

Hi Mike,

I have to say, this is all very confusing as to what is, and isn't acceptable. Much of what is in the article now was there before - just scrubbed of wrong information. I guess I thought that since the historical information was inaccurate, that pulling information from our website regarding the history, would be the best thing to do.

I'll revert to the previous version, remove the offending copy, edit the inaccurate, and give up. It sure seems like it is easier to post lies than truths here? Very frustrating.

Thanks again for your help - while frustrating, it is appreciated,

Nexeninc

Conflict of interest[edit]

Dear Oilwebguy, hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! I hope to not seem unfriendly, but I'd like to bring to your attention the conflict of interest guideline which explains the potential incompatibility between the purpose of Wikipedia to produce a neutral, verifiable encyclopedia, and the purposes of an individual editor. Conflict of interest editing often involves contributing to Wikipedia in order to promote yourself, your friends or family, or the interests of other individuals, companies, or groups you are closely associated with. When an editor disregards the aims of Wikipedia to advance outside interests, they stand in a conflict. Please review this guideline, and you may wish to also review the notability guidelines as well. Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia, and I hope you'll find many helpful areas! Sincerely, ArielGold 19:54, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Oilwebguy, as a representative or employee of Nexen, Inc, you are in a conflict of interest by editing the article, and blanking nearly the entire article is not acceptable form without discussion. Please show me where a Wikipedia administrator instructed you to blank the article of nearly all information, and I will repeat the action personally. However, if you are referring to a Nexen administrator, I'm afraid that they do not have the authority to make such a decision. Please review the policies and guidelines found in the help menu to understand more about Wikipedia, and please do not blank the article. Instead, discuss the issues you have problems with on the article's talk page, and due to a conflict of interest, it would be best if you allow neutral, non-involved editors to edit the article. Thanks! ArielGold 19:53, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done. As you were editing under an IP, I was unaware of the conversations here. I would suggest you avoid editing the article due to the COI, and instead, discuss any changes you wish to make on the article's discussion page. Thanks! ArielGold 19:57, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Resolved (this is a false positive); I have asked the user to go back to the previous version and edit from there, which he did. See above. - Mike Rosoft 20:18, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
