Ohhhhh...lol - of course! I was thrown off by the word "auto" thinking that it was a command that auto added a ref name + the full citation after you entered the url. Wishful thinking...or not thinking in my case. Atsme📞📧 10:06, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
@Atsme: Citer is a nifty tool to create ref names and full citations, which can then be copy/pasted into articles. One has to double-check the results generated by Citer, though, as there are sometimes errors. Otherwise, it works great; I use it all the time. North America1000 11:33, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
Sounds good - thank you! Is there a list of all these really cool shortcut tools that make editing easier? I only recently learned how to check my NPP and AfD logs.   • Good morning @Atsme: Consider creating a links or dashboard page for links you want to denote for future use, such as in the style of the dashboard I have on the bottom of my main User page (transcluded from User:Northamerica1000/Dashboard). You can keep such list on a user subpage, on your main user page, or even your user talk page if you'd like. Regarding tools and scripts, myriad options are available. Below are some examples. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Spencer Rabin new developments

Please see the recent (within last 24 hours) discussion that's at the bottom of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Spencer Rabin. The main voice to keep the article has agreed to allow a delete but with the text moved to Draft:Spencer Rabin for further incubation, in the hopes that he becomes notable in the future. I suggested this as a win/win compromise: the article is "deleted" per process and can be speedy taken out of the mainspace if it shows back up, but the user can continue to work on it.

  • Good morning C.Fred: Since the ping to all participants was very recent (today at 02:19 UTC), I recommend allowing a bit of time for Bearcat to potentially respond there, particularly since Bearcat has provided significant commentary in the discussion. Also, you may already be aware of moving procedures, but just to review, if the article were to be placed back in Draft space, to preserve attribution (e.g. Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia#Userfication) the draft page would be deleted, the page moved, and then a WP:HISTMERGE performed on the draft page. The end result would be the article page being deleted without a redirect with all of the Revision history intact. North America1000 15:14, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

C.Fred: Technically no, because it was a straight page move from the draft to main namespace. I performed the hist merge for the draft page, since Winged Blades of Godric closed the AfD discussion as draftify and moved the article over a redirect back to the draft page (diff), rather than userfying. The histmerge preserved all of the history, and the histmerge consisted of only one deleted edit that was restored to the draft page's Revision history. As such, the draft could still be moved to user space if desired, with all history preserved. North America1000 14:53, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Technical issues : Articles for deletion log page

Hi, I saw that article Anti-Orthodoxy was nominated for deletion, and it was added here: 2018 February 10: DBR, but it seems that section title "Anti-Orthodoxy" is not showing on the page 2018 February 10, and now "untitled" discussion has started between sections "Expected Goals" and "Nellie Bowles". Recent changes

  • TemplateStyles has been deployed to the Swedish Wikipedia. TemplateStyles is a feature to make it easy to add CSS to templates without administrator privileges. This allows for better adaptability to screen sizes, especially on mobile where are half our total page views. If your community would like to be the next to have the feature, please submit a task on Phabricator. [1][2][3]
  • Registration pages now collect keyboard/mouse usage information for research on identifying spambots.

Changes later this week

  • You can opt in to a new beta feature that lets you use visual diffs on history pages. [4]
  • The visual editor shows and lets you edit templates in one way, and reference lists in another. This meant that templates that only contain a fake reference list, like {{reflist}}, would not get updated as you edited. Now they will update as you edit, but you will no longer be able to visually edit them as templates. [5]
  • The abuse filter extension has a new feature contains_all that you may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string. [6]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 February. It will be on all wikis from 15 February (calendar).

Recent changes

  • The explanation of the abbreviations on the recent changes page could overlap with the list of changes. This has been fixed. [8][9]
  • You can now see statistics for pageviews per wiki per country. You can see this on maps or in a table. [10]

Problems

  • Linter is reporting estimated counts instead of actual counts for some wikis. This is because of performance problems. You might notice a false higher number in linter counts for some categories. This will be fixed as soon as the performance problem has been fixed. [11]
  • Last week the way that Visual Editor displays references lists was changed. As a result, the references generated by specific templates like {{sfn}} are not visible in the references list whilst editing. [12][13]

DYK Approval page

Northamerica1000, it hasn't been our practice to move nominations back from the Approval page to the Nominations page if issues come up after the nomination has been approved. We've left the nominations where they are, and issues tend to get solved whichever of the pages they're on. I've noticed that we're pretty inconsistent on how we deal with nominations that have been pulled back from prep: some people put them on one page and some on the other.

At any rate, you don't need to do moves like you did with the bagpipes company today; just leave it where it is, and let the bot do whatever moving is necessary. If it ever becomes important to move noms from the Approval page back to the Nominations page, we can add it to the bot's tasks. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:49, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

  • @BlueMoonset: Thanks for the input. I moved around four nominations that were initially approved and then non-approved back to the main DYK nom page. An immediate concern is that not many people view the approval page compared to the nominations page, and that moving back to the nom page could potentially lend to more article improvements or DYK commentary being made per more eyes. Check out the page view analysis below. For example, until I moved it, this nom had been sitting in the Approved page despite being non-approved since 13 January 2018 (UTC). That all said, I do see your point about leaving well enough alone.

My experience is that most people don't look at the older (upper) reaches of the Nominations page—it's why I post the "Oldest nominations needing review" lists to the DYK talk page. So I don't think those numbers reflect the actual activity with older and approved noms. Some of the more experienced reviewers (and anyone who does promotions) will look through the Approval page. We can ask Mifter, but I suspect the reason they picked up the China nomination you moved back was the link from that Oldest list rather than looking through the Nominations page. Most reviewers will look in the very latest dates in the Current section of the Nominations page, or perhaps at the dates nearest to where their own nomination will be placed.   • @BlueMoonset: Well, I'll likely just leave well enough alone most of the time. Doing nothing is a lot easier than moving stuff around too! Thanks for your perspective, and yes, I have seen those listings that are placed on the DYK talk page, but never noticed who was actually posting them (e.g. diff). It's been you! So thanks for that and for all you do to forward the DYK process. That all said, if entries fester at the approved page for a long time, it still may be a good idea to move back to the nom page. That response at Template:Did you know nominations/China's 100 major archaeological discoveries in the 20th century was quite quick after I moved it back to the nom page.   • Update: Template:Did you know nominations/McCallum Bagpipes received a comment two days after being moved back to the DYK nom page, from a previously uninvolved editor. I'm starting to wonder if leaving disapproved entries at the approved page is actually a good idea. Seems possible that more eyes on the nom page (around 7x the number the approved page receives) can equate to more progress, whereas if the now disapproved entry was left on the approved page, it could still very well be sitting there without any additional commentary.   • Actually, Chris's comment was made because I queried him directly on his talk page about the image, since he's knowledgeable in the image space through his work at Featured pictures, so since I provided him there with a link to the nomination template, it would have been made regardless of where the nomination was transcluded, and would not have been made without that solicitation, regardless of its location. If you do decide to do further moves, please do not add a comment about the move: we do not add comments when moving from Nominations to Approved, and doing so in the reverse direction has nothing to do with the nomination itself, just housekeeping irrelevant to the review itself.   • @BlueMoonset: Thanks for letting me know what's what, and I agree about the commentary...keep it simple by omitting it. I need more time to think matters over, but it at least seems that disapproved nominations on the approved noms page would receive more eyes when moved back.   • Perhaps you should get opinions at WT:DYK before you start wholesale moving. It may be that people who are prep builders are more likely to also work on these nominations if they remain on the approved page. We both seem to be making guesses that may not hold up when editors explain their way of working (I've already noted why I think your "more eyes" argument may not hold water, since I believe most people don't look at older nominations but go straight to the bottom of the Nominations page when looking for a QPQ). If moving no-longer-approved nominations back from the approved page is important enough, then we should probably request that WugBot be given the job of doing it. Would you consider reopening Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Linda Weber? I believe the discussion is still reasonably active. A number of editors are trying to assess consensus with regards to WP:NPOL and WP:POLOUTCOMES, and I believe this is productive and should play out (see also Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peter Jacob and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David Pringle (activist) (2nd nomination)). Hi Marquardtika: I don't know, the discussion has already received a great deal of input from many users, and there really is no consensus for a particular result regarding the article. Discourse regarding the subject in the discussion has declined in recent days, and was mostly limited between two users, (Bearcat and Tomwsulcer), who are obviously in disagreement. Also of note is that per WP:RELIST, it states, "relisting should not be a substitute for a "no consensus" closure. If the closer feels there has been substantive debate, disparate opinions supported by policy have been expressed, and consensus has not been achieved, a no-consensus close may be preferable." At this time, I feel that adequate, guideline-based commentary has transpired in the discussion, and that closing now as no consensus is appropriate. North America1000 23:46, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

@Onel5969: Half of the article consists of blue links. I think that the links to the main country articles in the third paragraph should definitely go (e.g. India, Austria, Germany, Belarus, Cuba, etc.), as per MOS:OVERLINK: What generally should not be linked; "This generally includes major examples of: geographic features...". Perhaps the links to the various language articles could go too. Does the article really need a link to every language mentioned in it? North America1000 21:10, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors February 2018 News

Welcome to the February 2018 GOCE newsletter in which you will find Guild updates since the December edition. We got to a great start for the year, holding the backlog at nine months. 100 requests were submitted in the first 6 weeks of the year and were swiftly handled with an average completion time of 9 days.

Coordinator elections: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2018 were elected. Jonesey95 remained as lead coordinator and Corrine, Miniapolis and Tdslk as assistant coordinators. Keira1996 stepped down as assistant coordinator and was replaced by Reidgreg. Thanks to all who participated!

End of year reports were prepared for 2016 and 2017, providing a detailed look at the Guild's long-term progress.

January drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2017 from our backlog and all December 2017 Requests (a total of 275 articles). As with previous years, the January drive was an outstanding success and by the end of the month all but 57 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 38 who signed up, 21 editors recorded 259 copy edits (490,256 words).

February blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 February, focusing on Requests and the last articles tagged in May 2017. At the end of the week there were only 14 pending requests, with none older than 20 days. Of the 11 who signed up, 10 editors completed 35 copy edits (98,538 words).

Recent changes

Problems

  • Last week's MediaWiki version was rolled back because of a bug. [16][17]
  • Since the deployment train last week until late evening on 20 February UTC, when you thanked someone for an edit, the thank went to the latest unthanked edit to that page. It didn't matter which edit you tried to give thanks for. This has been fixed. [18]
  • Special:Statistics did not take newly created pages into account since 13 February 2018. Because of this the statistics are recreated. [19][20][21]

Changes later this week

  • Users with version 10 of the Internet Explorer browser will no longer get JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis. If you use this browser on your computer, you can try upgrading to a newer version. [22]
  • Advanced item The Wikinews wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 27 February. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in the middle of 2018. [23][24]

An appeal to an Impulsive GA reviewer

Hello, I am contacting you since I have close connections and we have edited in the past. I recently put up an article Taconic State Parkway for GA review in hopes that a reviewer would post issues and I would solve in order to reach a passing level. The reviewer impulsively failed the next day without giving me a chance to do any work or see problems. I am reaching out to you as I do not feel this was in fair jurisdiction for an article I put a lot of effort in. There was no effort on the reviewers end. The reviewer was "CycloneIsaac". Need your assistance on an article

I am a big fan of your work and I enjoy reading the new articles that you nave created and the neglected stubs that you have improved to DYK status.

I know that you seem to specialize on working on food relate articles, so I have a small request for you. If you, have the time, can you look at an article or two?

I have discovered a relatively neglected article about the defunct fast food chain called Druther's and I need help in trying to fix the lead paragraph. The main problem is the chain sold out to Dairy Queen several decades ago, but one lone franchise is still hanging on. The problem with the lead paragraph is tense. Can you take a quick look?

    • I apologize for typing the wrong link since most of your DYK related work tends to be food related and quite interesting. The correct article is about a defunct American restaurant chain called Victoria Station (restaurant) that initially created theme restaurants out of old railroad box cars. After opening 100 restaurants throughout the U.S., the company basically imploded and was forced to file for bankruptcy. Case studies of the company's history appears to be subject of many business school textbooks and PhD theses. I believe that there is still more material that could still be added that this topic could lead you to another DYK, if you choose, since I don't think I have enough time to complete this (properly) for DYK.         • I understand that your limited time is currently stretch out very thin based upon the number of different articles that you seem to be actively working on at any moment. I'm glad that you are not burnt out by fighting with those idiots (that later turned out to be Sock Puppets) on such articles as Cabalen who mindlessly gut articles that have reputable third-party citations while you restore the deleted material. (BTW, I agree with your edits and I had to revert edits that the same person had deletion in other articles.) Out of curiosity, when does the expanded 5 times its size in 10 days clock start? For Victoria Station (restaurant), the article had 3,893 bytes just before 21:31, 27 January 2018. The article is currently 2-3 times that. -- 50.195.200.161 (talk)

            • Thanks for the tip. BTW, enjoyed reading your recent DYK article, Pizza by the slice. If you need suggestions for possible food relate articles that could be DYK candidates, I have stumble upon the following topics while hunting for citations that were used in improving Du-par's, Brown Derby (originators of the Cobb salad), Chasen's, and Norms Restaurants:
              • Hamburger Hamlet, a former nationwide chain of gourmet hamburger restaurants that originally started as a single restaurant on the Sunset Strip that had catered to the Hollywood crowd during the 1950s and 1960's since was close to the film studios and the Los Angeles area nightclubs. Was a favorite watering hole for Dean Martin and other in the film, television, and music industries. Was also the employer of many aspiring actors before they became famous. I left many citations at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Arts and entertainment#F–I that could be use to start an article.
              • Cassell's Hamburgers, not sure of notability, but has many newspaper and magazine articles written about the business that was a favorite of some Hollywood tyes. I left many citations at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Arts and entertainment#C–E that could be use to start an article.
              • Tiny Naylor's, a former regional chain of coffee shops and drive-ins that was founded and owned by William "Tiny" Naylor who supposedly invented the patty melt. Naylor's son is the currently the owner of Du-par's and his granddaughter was the head chef at Wolfgang Puck's Granita restaurant in Malibu. A quick Google search shows that there have been many books and newspaper articles written about the chain and its founder.
BTW, I am having a slow going trying to improve the Brown Derby article because there is a lot of unreference material there and it is going to take awhile to locate properly citations. Another problem is correcting the lead because other authors are constantly inserting unreferenced material concerning unrelated companies that adopted the same name and similar themes but have no relation with the original company. All that is left of the original company is that the heirs of the last owner have maintained a franchising agreement with the Disney Corporation. There is a lot of material about the Brown Derby chain that was published in contemporary newspaper articles that still needs to be added. -- 50.195.200.161 (talk) 03:52, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

My editing time varies lately, but I denote such suggestions and tend to work on suggested articles, at least a bit, as time and interest permits.   • Unfortunately, I really don't have much time to address all of the above right now, and will soon be taking somewhat of an extended break from Wikipedia for a bit of time. A short answer to the above is that most stub/start and c-class articles can often be improved. It's all about first finding sources, and from there just expanding articles based upon what sources objectively state. For quite some time now, I typically add a reliable source for every sentence I add to an article. As an aside, regarding sources, check out the WP:ADVANCED essay I created, which is useful to learn about source search ideas.   • You can notify users in edit summaries. They will get a ping just as if they had been mentioned on a wiki page. [26]
  • On Special:AbuseLog you can now choose to list only actions that actually made an edit. Other actions are when the filter warned the editor or blocked the edit from being made. There are also more search options. [27][28]
  • Advanced item Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor, but it is complex. The tool will now warn in the JavaScript console if the configuration isn't correct. Soon Citoid will disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it. [29]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 March. It will be on all wikis from 8 March (calendar).

Guideline and policy news

  • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

Technical news

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.
