I joined Wikipedia hoping to work on an article, my friend tells me you are the one who "protected it" which prevents people from working on it, can this be fixed or reversed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by I Write Stuff (talkcontribs) 13:06, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've unprotected the article. However, please be aware that edit wars caused the protection in the first place, and that I'll reprotect the article if it happens again. Meanwhile, if you are new, I'd suggest you take a look at each of the "five pillars" of Wikipedia to understand a bit more about what the project is about, before actively editing. Welcome. --Nlu (talk) 16:08, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your efforts, it seems something is still preventing the article from being edited, if you have any idea who I can contact, or what may be preventing edits, it would be greatly appreciated. Sorry I forgot about the signing. --I Write Stuff (talk) 17:55, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I pressed the wrong button. Sorry about that. --Nlu (talk) 20:56, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Li Tan and Li Dan[edit]

"(I don't see how "Li Tan" could be confused for "Li Dan")"

Because there is a system called Wade-Giles - "Li Dan" in Hanyu Pinyin is "Li Tan" in Wade-Giles. WhisperToMe (talk) 22:40, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All right. Let me add a {{dablink}}, then. Thanks. --Nlu (talk) 22:40, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like 206.113.142.245 is at it again[edit]

Hey Nlu! Can you consider re-blocking this IP address? More vandalism (this time to Rwandan Genocide) is once again originating from it. Thanks! --Todeswalzer|Talk 00:08, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't look like it's the same vandal -- at least the evidence so far is insufficient. The level of vandalism doesn't really warrant a block right now if they're not the same person. I appreciate the report, though, and please do let me know if vandalism continues. --Nlu (talk) 04:27, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Keluo Khan[edit]

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Keluo Khan, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. You're the 9th victim of his spam, and counting. He simply spammed every user he know over a simple, one-word dispute, and deleted and ignored my replies. And gave me three vandalism warnings. I don't know if he's trolling or just (forget NPA) totally dumb. This is an immense waste of time. I suggest you disregard this although you're certainly welcome to comment. Your future works?[edit]

your works on Chinese history are great, now you are writting about the history of Tang & its' figures. later, will you write about the next dinasties & their figures? i'm waiting your works on the warlords of Five Dynasties period & the heroes of Song dynasty.--61.94.124.65 (talk) 10:40, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am planning to write articles on the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, yes. Song Dynasty is a bit more difficult since I am less familiar with it (since it is not covered by the Zizhi Tongjian), but I'd probably still write articles on the most important figures, although they'll be shorter and not as detailed. In particular, I am hoping to expand and add information on every emperor and empress all the way to the end of Qing Dynasty, but practically, everything after the Five Dynasties is out of my area of expertise, so I'll have to think a bit more. And, obviously, this will probably take years. Thank you for your encouragement. --Nlu (talk) 15:23, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ooh i see, i think u are very expert in Zizhi Tongjian :). don't u study Ming shi and 24 histories? it looks like there are more references there about the history of the Song-early Qing. thx --61.94.124.139 (talk) 17:10, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I do use the Twenty-four histories, but the Zizhi Tongjian is highly useful and easier to understand due to its chronological nature. I will try to see if I can figure things out when I get there... --Nlu (talk) 17:13, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD[edit]

Hello, Nlu, and welcome to Wikipedia (I know you're not new, please don't take it that way. I just think everyone deserves a welcome.)It seems that you have nominated two articles on one afd page. Next time, please consider using seperate pages so users know what they are discussing. Thank you. Nothing444Go Irish! 16:04, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AFD explicitly suggests that related articles should be nominated together, if they are going to be nominated at all. --Nlu (talk) 16:08, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Trung Sisters[edit]

Could you translate the Vietnamese account of the Trung Sisters from the original text? The version we currently have in the article is a translation of a translation, so something might be lost along the way. DHN (talk) 21:46, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do that. Thanks for getting me involved. I think it may take a day or two, but I'll get it done. --Nlu (talk) 21:48, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is how I'd render the translation (the names are in pinyin; you have my blessing to change them to Vietnamese) -- the "smaller font" in all likelihood signified later commentary, which is the case in Chinese historical works as well; also, the last paragraph had one character that I have never seen before, which I suspect was a local Vietnamese character, but I hopefully understood it right:

The Chronicle of the Reign of Queen Zheng

Queen Zheng reigned for three years.

(smaller font) The queen was strong and brave. She expelled Su Ding and established a kingdom as the queen, but as a female ruler could not accomplish the rebuilding of the state. (end smaller font)

Her taboo name was Ce, and her family name was Zheng.

Her family name was originally Luo. She was the daughter of General Luo from Mileng [note that the Book of Later Han used "Miling" rather than "Mileng"] from Feng Prefecture, and she was the wife of Shi Suo from Zhujiu County. (smaller font) Shi Suo was the son of General Luo's doctor [at least that's what I think that character is -- the resolution wasn't good enough for me to be sure], and they arranged the marriage. The work Gangmu Jilan erroneously indicated that his family name was Luo. (end smaller font) Her capital was Milleng. (smaller font) Mi is pronounced Mi. (end smaller font)

Her first year was Gengzi. (smaller font) It was the 16th year of Han Dynasty's Jianwu era. (end smaller font) In the spring, the second month, the governor of Wangku Commandery, Su Ding, punished her under the law, and she also hated Su for having killed her husband. She therefore, along with her sister Er, rose and captured the commandery capital. Su was forced to flee. Nanhai, Jiuzhen, Ri'nan, and Hepu all rose in response to her. She was able to take over 65 cities and declare herself queen. Thereafter, she began to use the family name of Zheng.

Her second year was Xinchou. (smaller font) It was the 17th year of Han Dynasty's Jianwu era. (end smaller font) In the spring, the second month, there was a solar eclipse, and the moon was dark. Han saw that as Lady Zheng had declared herself queen and captured cities, causing much distress in the border commanderies. It thus ordered Changsha, Hepu, and our Jiao Province to prepare wagons and boats, repair the bridges and the roads, dredge the rivers, and store food supplies. It commissioned Ma Yuan as the General Fupo and Liu Long the Marquess of Fule as his assistant in order to invade.

Her third year was Renyin. (smaller font) It was the 18th year of Han Dynasty's Jianwu era. (end smaller font) In the spring, the first month, Ma followed the coastline and entered Sui Mountain. He went for over a thousand li and reached Langbo. (smaller font) West of Luocheng's western street was named Langbo. (end smaller font) He battled with the queen, who saw that the enemy's army was large. She considered her own army to be ill-trained, and feared that it could not stand. Therefore, she withdrew to Jin (禁) River. (smaller font) Jin River was referred to in history as Jin (金) River. (end smaller font) Her followers also thought that the queen was a woman and could not be victorious, and therefore scattered. Her kingdom therefore ended.

Please let me know if you want clarifications. --Nlu (talk) 04:42, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Would you incorporate it into the article? If not, I'd do it by this weekend. DHN (talk) 06:51, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it might be better for you to do it, since I don't know Vietnamese. Thanks. --Nlu (talk) 07:07, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have a question about the translation above: Can 雒將 be interpreted as "a Luo general" instead of "General Luo"? The "Luo" wasn't a surname, but an ethnic grouping? Vietnamese consider themselves descendants of the Lạc Việt (雒越 Luoyue) group, so Luo has a special meaning in Vietnamese context. As to Shi Suo's origins, did you look at the gloss at the left for that character? Thanks. DHN (talk) 21:55, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did look at what was mentioned of Shi Suo's origins -- and there was one character I couldn't make out for certain, but I believe it's "Yi" (醫, doctor), and thus the translation above. As for whether it's possible to be "a Luo general" rather than "General Luo," in that context, no, because it referred to Zheng Ce's father, and the text had said that her original surname was Luo. (I know, that might or might not be the truth, but that's what the text said.) --Nlu (talk) 00:58, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

I have to disagree, I think ancient sources are always primary, whether or not they are reporting events that themselves occurred long before. However, I have only queried your articles and not nixed them. If someone else wants to promote your articles, I am not going to stand in their way. I've made some further comments on the suggestions page. Gatoclass (talk) 06:36, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That is, however, not the way that Wikipedia distinguishes primary and secondary sources. --Nlu (talk) 06:37, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Just a question: why did you AFD an article (Anna Guo) without actually taking a bit of time to inform the creator of that article? I believe we should be as courteous as possible at WP. Please consider doing so now, and in all similar instances in the future. Badagnani (talk) 00:51, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notification is not required; it's optional, and in my opinion not warranted in this case. --Nlu (talk) 01:44, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We must be as courteous to one another as possible at WP. Badagnani (talk) 02:21, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, but I don't think in this case notifying of AfD provides any more courtesy. --Nlu (talk) 03:15, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please take the few seconds it would take to notify the creators of articles you propose for deletion; not to do so does not show courtesy toward them. Thanks. Badagnani (talk) 04:07, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I said, it's not mandatory, and I see no reason to do so in this case. To be blunt, I feel it's a waste of time when there are hundreds of articles that I have to go through to cut down on the size of a tremendous tree. --Nlu (talk) 04:08, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reason is that we're all human, and subject to error. By seeking more review, it cuts down on the chances that a legitimate article gets axed. --Bfigura (talk) 04:51, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's what an AfD is for. --Nlu (talk) 04:51, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but not entirely. If it can be improved easily, there's no need to send it to AfD and waste everyone's time. (After all, that's what we have tags for). (Not that I'm implying every article is salvageable, but clearly at least a few of the last ones were). Best, --Bfigura (talk) 05:02, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Siqing Lu[edit]

Hi. I wasn't the author but I've expanded and referenced Siqing Lu. It should now meet the notability guideline and WP:MUSIC. Could you review this and possibly withdraw the nomination? Thanks, PeterSymonds | talk 17:35, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd rather let the AfD run its course. There is no reason to withdraw it prematurely without a full discussion. --Nlu (talk) 04:57, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop mass re-categorizing.[edit]

There is a discussion page on the WP:CPOP project page, which serves that purpose. Anything relating to music in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong falls under that jurisdiction.

Taiwanese musicians = Taiwanese instrumentalists. Taiwanese singer-songwriters = singer-songwriters from Taiwan. Mandopop singer-songwriters = singer-songwriters that are part of the Mandopop industry, regardless of location.

Pandacomics (talk) 19:06, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:CAT. The category tree was getting unmanageable. If someone else has a better idea on how to reorganize it, I'm all ears, but right now, there is no action on it. I'm open to yet a further reorganization that makes better sense to you logically, but inaction means that the category is simply getting larger and larger until it becomes impossible to do anything with it. --Nlu (talk) 04:56, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, first of all, you could have at least asked, or discussed. Imagine my shock when I found everything messed around with. Let's start discussion here instead of doing mass reverts, because I'm not in the mood to re-revert over 100 articles. Firstly, I would like to keep Category:Mandarin-language singers because there are Mandarin singers who are NOT from the Sinosphere (namely Siris (band)). Secondly, I disagree with your creation of People's Republic of China singers category. I don't see why we couldn't just say "Chinese singers". Pandacomics (talk) 05:03, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You already started a discussion -- at CfD -- which is a good start. Let's see what the community thinks. If you object to the Mandopop subcategories, again, I'd suggest adding them to CfD. --Nlu (talk) 05:05, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Category:Taiwanese Mandopop singer-songwriters (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at the discussion page. Thank you. Pandacomics (talk) 19:09, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
