Reference help[edit]

{{helpme}}

A page I started has been tagged for citations but I don't know how to put these in or what would be acceptable. I started another page too that is similar but has not been tagged, that presumably needs them too.

Anyone able to help?

Citations are the references to reliable sources that support the statement. These are usually put inside of <ref> tags right after they support. Consider the following snippet of code:
Superman is faster than a speeding bullet,<ref>Olson, Jimmy. "[http://www.example.com/link_to_story.html Superman saves bystander from shooting]." ''Daily Planet''. April 1, 1938.</ref> and he can leap tall buildings in a single bound.<ref>Lane, Lois. "Superman flies to rescue." ''Daily Planet''. April 2, 1938.</ref>
When formatted, it produces this text:
Superman is faster than a speeding bullet,[1] and he can leap tall buildings in a single bound.[2]
At the end of the article, a {{reflist}} tag is placed in the References section of the article. That will produce a list of all the references cited, like this:
  1. ^ Olson, Jimmy. "Superman saves bystander from shooting." Daily Planet. April 1, 1938.
  2. ^ Lane, Lois. "Superman flies to rescue." Daily Planet. April 2, 1938.
The critical part, though, is providing a link to the sources. If it comes down to it, you can just put the URL of an online site after the statement, and other editors can assist with the formatting. You can use sources from newspapers, books, and the like that aren't online, if you include enough information for other editors to find the source. If the source is online, including a link makes it very easy for other editors to verify the information. —C.Fred (talk) 15:25, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for that C.Fred it was very helpful.

Now how do I get the tag removed as I have put in a citation?

It looks like you've already figured this one out [1] so I'll cancel this help request.
Two tips though;
  • When you leave messages, please remember to "sign" your name, by putting ~~~~ (four tilde signs) at the end. This will add your name, and the date and time. You can also do this by clicking the 'sign' button, pictured to the right.
  • Note that all the facts you add on Wikipedia need a reference. So, yes, the article now has a reference - but it really needs more. You can use the same reference several times. But at the moment, I can't see where to verify that the ship was used to collect herring, that it was built for speed, and that is why W Sligting chose the ship, or that she was relaunched in July 2010 as a two masted topsail schooner etc.
So, it does need more references - even if they are repeated. You can use 'named references' for that.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer be able to have them marked as minor by default. For more information on what a minor edit is, see WP:MINOR or feel to get in touch.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 22:38, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits, such as your recent edits to Shark fin soup, as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you. —Bagumba (talk) 01:37, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
