Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Soc of authors. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Society of Authors, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

Please edit carefully[edit]

Hallo, In your recent edits to Society of Authors you managed to damage the encyclopedia.

There was a link to Richard Imison Award: it was a "blue link", ie it led to an actual article at that title. You observed that this was the wrong name for the award, and changed the text of the link to "Imison Award". The link then went red, because there was no article at that title - so a reader wanting to find the award from the page about the society could not do so.

There are four ways you could have fixed this:

  1. If nothing else, notice the red link, realise it's a problem you don't know how to fix, and undo the change you made - a link to the article using an out of date name is better than no link
  2. "Pipe" the link: change [[Richard Imison Award]] to [[Richard Imison Award|Imison Award]] The second version appears as Imison Award and links to the article at its established, incorrect, title (ie what's to the right of the "pipe" character appears on screen, and what's to the left is the functional link)
  3. Create a "redirect", a cross-reference which takes "Imison Award" and links the reader to Richard Imison Award (though after my action, that latter is now itself a redirect)
  4. Move the article from the wrong title to the right title. I've done that. You would not have been able to do it yourself using the "Move" tag (you have to have done at least 10 previous edits), but you can use "Request Move" to ask for the article to be moved.

Please check after any editing that the results on the screen are what you want them to be, and try to fix any problems you've inadvertently caused. If all else fails, put {{help me}} on your user talk page (ie this page) and explain the problem, and someone will come along and fix it.
