William Reginald Mitchell

The article was declined on the grounds that I had failed to establish the notability of the subject, historian and writer, W R Mitchell. However, Mitchell was awarded an Honorary Degree by the University of Bradford, and an MBE for his services to journalism, is the author of 170+ books on the regional history of North Britain, and has collected hundreds of interviews of Dales people over 60 years on tape, which are now being digitized and form part of a publicly accessible W R Mitchell archive. The citations and references given are of institutions of higher education or other reputable British organisations, e.g. Yorkshire Dales Society.

So I'm not sure how else I can establish the notability of this subject. Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.Neville323 (talk) 09:59, 26 March 2014 (UTC) Neville323 (talk) 09:34, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Neville - I wouldn't give up hope. I'm sure there's also some link to Alan Bennett, to a BBC documentary on Mitchell's life & work. May I suggest introducing a 'Media' type section and take the Radio 4 interview from external links and putting it there as an actual citation, then the Alan Bennett documentary (unless I've got the wrong person) and then keep adding the newspapers until there's around half a dozen. Then put in ISBNs at the end of each book. Oh, and take out the personal publications for 'friends and family' - not suitable for an encyclopedia.
I'm no expert on Wikipedia but I'd be surprised if you can't get this interesting man listed. Lastly, don't put it up again until it's complete: I tried that with my own AFC and it came down in minutes : ) I had no idea that articles can be reviewed so quickly. I'd gladly work on this article and I might just give it a go - feel free to revert any of my mistakes if I do. I've got to go to work now...good luck with it. PS - local newspapers aren't worth much with regards to the value of citations, but there's no harm in adding the few that are unused in External Links. Eh up! that was a bit of a surprise. Looks like Kevin has kindly given you the benefit of the doubt. I'll work in a media section if you don't get round to it yourself. While Mr Mitchell is very well known in the north of England, there's little doubt that his influence has taken him beyond to the rest of the UK, mainly through the popularity of the Dalesman. I hope you might trace some national reviews of his more popular books, even if they're just off the blurbs at the back. I've now had him adopted by the Dalesman entry on Wikipedia - so I'll remove the orphan tag. Lots of work to do on this article now. Angela MacLean (talk) 21:36, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:W R Mitchell.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:W R Mitchell.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 11:02, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
