Abhidharma[edit]

Hey Nat- I did some reorganization on the Abhidhamma page the other night and had some thoughts for structuring things with regards to abhidhamma vs. abhidharma vs. abhidhamma pitaka that I tossed on the Talk:Abhidhamma page. Thought you might be interested in taking a look. Enjoy China! --Clay Collier 11:30, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Prakrit[edit]

In reply to your "sofixit" --apparently you didn't bother to notice that I completely re-wrote the article. Thanks for your non-reply, telling me to edit the article rather than complain. I did both; and my complaints are hardly without justification. I hope I don't have to re-write the thing again, after the next generation of proud graduates to "Intro to Hindi 100" decide to reduce the article to their level of understanding.

Phra Bhudhacharn(Toh)Promrangsi[edit]

Regarding our mysterious monk- it looks like he is probably significant enough to warrant inclusion, but it may be a little difficult to dig up verifiable information about him. He is famous in Thailand mostly in connection with protective amulets- some that he created that are now highly sought after by collectors, and some contemporary ones that bear his image (common practice with powerful Thai monks). He seems also to have authored some popular protective verses, and possibly was a preceptor for a king of the Chakri dynasty. All the information on him seems to be heavily hagiographied, if that's a word. This is the sort of thing that my father-in-law might know something about; I might see if he knows anything about this particular monk.

Regarding naming the article- we're into the irregular romanization of Thai and problem that Thai monastic names are linked to ecclesiastic titles. I think that 'Somdet Toh' or 'Somdej Toh' might be the most common name by which he is referred, but I'll have to dig around a little more. Budhacharn Promrangsi sounds like an ordination name, so there should be a redirect from there. Not sure if the 'Phra' should be included or not. No need to redirect from luang pue, since that's just an affectionate honorific that can apply to any senior (typically titled) Thai monk. I'll see what other title/naming information I can find about this specific individual. --Clay Collier 02:37, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Macedonians (ethnicity)[edit]

Although I know that no rational solution to this article will ever be found, why not call it Macedonian (ethnicity) and use "ethnic Macedonians" as the default option in the text? All of the other modern people that you could describe as "Macedonians" are ethnic Greeks, ethnic Albanians, etc., etc. - Nat Krause 10:11, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, I want to acknowledge that I am an (ethnic) Macedonian, myself. (That is, to know, I am biased by default). We find the term insulting. I proposed the very same term myself, then there was a poll, which proved the obvious - there are more Greeks than Macedonians on the English Wikipedia.

However, I think I have managed to get pretty close to the problem (seen in perspective of the NPOV and the Wikipedia:Naming conflict policy, and I would like to address you here. There is a list of questions in the section below, that, unfortunately, were left unanswered. I would like to know your opinion about this. --FlavrSavr 14:21, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Where are you getting "Yunmen Wenyan" from? And why did you not make it a redirect, and instead decided to move Ummon to it; this is not standard pratice, as Ummon is vastly more widespread in English than Yunmen Wenyan. --Maru (talk) 00:18, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've recently added quite a bit to Ummon, along with quite a few place-names, peoples, and documents. If you could go through and rationalize everything withn your l33t chinese skillz? --Maru (talk) 21:39, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Rose - Categories[edit]

Nat, I'm new here and had asked other posters whether having 3 in the Esoteric category was redundant. I'd really appreciate an explanation of your deletion of Zen and Esotericism from the Categories on Richard Rose. These are certainly not spurious - Rose was very much more one of these than a Mystic. Thanks Steve Harnish 17:39, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Hello, do you mind telling me why you deleted the name of my article, under the list of Buddhist sects in China(Shengmi)? because it is a factual knowledge that I read from a library, and then put it in my own words. If it is because I have gone against some rule of Wikipedia, can you please notify me, so I can prevent making the same mistake in the future. Thank you. --Vajrabell 04:01, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thanx for your quick reply. I'm sorry, I'm still not exactly familiar with the way Wikipedia works. When you say you need sources, do you mean like a book that refers to this sect? To be honest, 聖密宗 is the actual name, I was the one who tried to translate it, according to the same style as the other branches named above it (I'm trying my best to go by the Wiki rules). The reason I put it there, was because, even though the article exists, but if there is no 'access pathway' to it(i.e no link to the article), how can people find out about the presence of the article? If you don't like me putting it under the branches of Chinese Buddhism, do you mind instructing me as to where I can put a link to my article? I humbly ask for your guidance. Thank you.--Vajrabell 10:07, 29 September 2005 (UTC) P.S (where was that picture of yours taken? :)[reply]

Ruhlen and Na-Dené[edit]

Thanks. I'm afraid I don't know much about the work that's been done on migrations of Native Americans to the continents, so I can't help you with that. Marianne Mithun (in Languages of Native North America, 1999) says that the Na-Dené family is indeed accepted by most linguists, and the relationship between Athabaskan, Eyak, and Tlingit is considered established.

Take care --Whimemsz 17:30, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

American Indians versus Native Americans[edit]

Nat, your doing the "dab" work, but creating a re-direct. You changed the Wikilinki (s) to:

"American Indians in the United States"
But it re-directs to:

Prokudin-Gorskii's photo[edit]

Hi,Nat! I've removed Prokudin-Gorskii's photo from the Han Chinese article, as I couldn't find much evidence showing him to be a Han. Also, as he's wearing the costume of one of the ethnic minorities in China, the photo isn't representative of Han Chinese.

Thanks for the welcome. The man in P-G's photo worn a traditional Manchu dress, but it's hard to tell if he's really a Manchu. --Geckothesidhe 09:23, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The La Follettes/William LeRoy La Follette[edit]

All the Follettes of the United States are descended from a common ancestor who was a Hugenot(sic?) from France.Being from Wisconsin,I pick that one up from my readings about the La Follettes of Wisconsin.I think William LeRoy La Follette was a third cousin to Robert Marion La Follette,Sr. of Wisconsin. This needs to be research further.Thank you- Richard Dungar-La Crosse,Wisconsin

Samsara[edit]

Hey Nat, I note that you have edited the article on Samsara in the past. I've been having a discussion on the talk page with RDF about whether Surat Shabda Yoga belongs in the lead, along with Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. American Indian[edit]

I'm officially on vacation from WP for a while, but I just thought I'd stick my head in long enough to ask why you felt there had to be two separate disambiguation pages for the same thing on American Indian and Native Americans? You know that having trimmed American Indian down to just a few links, someone is going to come along and add back in all of the other information, but not quite all... we'll end up having some articles that only one will point you to and some articles that only the other will point you to.

Didn't we agree that one of these articles would be a disambiguation page and the other would redirect to it way back when we were and many others were discussing the fate of Native Americans (now Native Americans in the United States? -Harmil 03:53, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Read WP:NOT. Is the AZA notable? Interesting? Is it Encyclopedic, in other words? --Maru (talk) 13:25, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Chan in Communist china is forbidden for the last 50 years. All masters are appointed by the government. Most of the Buddhhists in Taiwan practice as ritual only. There are a few linages still seem to maintain in Taiwan, mostly Rinzai(LingChi). As far as I know, this is the only one who publicly claimes to be Chan Master and emphasizes extreme practices of Sitting Zen. While others called themselves Dharma Master and teach sutras or the knowledge more. SenYan for instance, called himself dharma master in Chinese and Zen master in English.

To answer your question, it is important significant if the authentic and original Chinese Chan could be taught anywhere in the world and not lost.

This is my two bits based on my research. If you agree with my input, please edit, instead of delete, my piece in accordance to wikipedia rules.

No different from you, everyone at AZA works as volunteer only. It is not for profit and not religious. In the tradition of Zen, our master forbid any of us to idolize him or beg for his blessing. He only points the way, and we have to walk on it and witness ourselves.

A "Spirituality" portal[edit]

economic fascism[edit]

Hey Nat, long time no see on ancap. I'm writing you, for one, you may be interested in vote for deletion on the economic fascism article that I authored. And, secondly I'm bringing the vote to your attention message because the guy who put it up for deletion went around putting notices on people's talk pages misrepresenting the contents of the article, so maybe some semblance of fairness can be achieved. See ya (and don't feel obligated to vote to keep). RJII 16:22, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

personal privacy[edit]

What should Wikipedia policy be in the case of an invidual, such as this Rogue fellow, who is famous only under a pseudonym and apparently wants to avoid having his real name publicly available? Should we have any consideration for the whims of the subject? - Nat Krause 06:37, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

You asked this a long time ago, and I'm trying to make sure that everyone in the community has a good answer to this quesiton. We should absolutely have deep consideration for the 'whims' of the subject. These are real human beings who may have personal safety issues, and it is not our job to 'out' people. If the name appears in mainstream published sources, then we can publish it; otherwise we should absolutely and firmly err on the side of human dignity and respect. --Jimbo Wales 14:36, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
