Retired

I have decided that its time for me to move on. My first edit was 5½ years ago in October 2003 which doesn't seem that long ago, so I suppose that's evidence that I enjoyed myself. I met some terrific people along the way and have learnt a lot. I may or may not return occasionally, but I have resolved that if I do so it will only be after some time and it will be with a new identity—those who know me will work it out I'm sure.

Why? I'm just burnt out and have lost my enthusiasm. I've had a couple of shortish breaks recently and didn't find myself much refreshed on my return, so a new start may be what's needed.

To my mates at WP:WA: I'm always available for a pizza/coffee/beer and a chat. You have my email. To them especially and to everyone else I know, good luck and best wishes.

Moondyne - congratulations and thank-you for a truly remarkable contribution to Wikipedia, in particular to most things WA and Aust-related, over a very long period. 5½ years eh? Well then, its beyond question that you've put in the hard yards and deserve the long break or retirement or whatever. Though I've only known you for a matter of a few months, you earned my respect and admiration when our paths first crossed. I've just checked your edit count. I believe it should be recorded here that you have made 43,685 edits in WP:en alone. I made my 500th edit last night, having started 5 months ago. A quick but of mental arithmetic tells me that it will take me about 35 years to rack up the same total as you. It would follow, therefore, that either I'm extremely slow/lazy, or you are an ABSOLUTE LEGEND. I know which it is. but it ain't just the sheer numbers that stagger me, its the quality that impresses. I know that as I continue to make my modest contributions to WP:WA and Australia, when I check an article's history, that I'll keep coming across your username time and time again, whether in the flagship articles like 'Perth' and 'Western Australia', or the obscure little article that I stumbled across last night in which I notched up my 500th. And I can be quite certain that those edits tagged with your name were good ones. As Hesperian has noted in the award posted on this page, your body of work is indeed a legacy. It is only after a few days

After editing for a few days after the announcement - I has struck me that it is a sign of the unreplacable nature of such an editor - someone so scrupulous with facts, and with the policies, dedicated, and always there - on wiki and off - as a support and sounding board. It is not simply a loss to the projects to whom he gave such valuable effort and time, but a very timely and poignant move - that we are only here (some of us) because of the supportive subcommunity that we have been able to work with.

Now that I know more people who have left wikipedia, than I currently relate to - I believe in time we have to acknowedge how real life in most cases is far more important than wikipedia - but also we should be a lot more supportive to those who earn the equiavelnt level of respect that Moondyne did in all the projects he contributed to. Split of 1987 America's Cup

Hey Moondyne, I apoligise for any annoyance I caused. I had/have been slowly working along creating Louis Vuitton Cup articles and approached the move from that point of view rather than one of spiting the original article. Also, the America's Cup technically only refers to the race between the defender and the challenger and I think the changes I made have made make the 1987 article fit better alongside the other America's Cup articles. Okay, I've left a note on the 1987 DSS page which seems to have been mainly a copy/paste job, I must say I hadn't come across WP:SPLIT before on wiki and as I had said I hadn't approached it from a mentality of "splitting" the page, rather one of creating articles that in my view are notable and needed. I am puzzled by your comment that "I also note that none of the other exiting AC articles has a sub-article for the defender series" because 1992 and 1995 do have DSS articles while in 1988, 2000, 2003 & 2007 no DSS took place. Indeed most of the LVC articles have been started by me, as have many of the America's Cup articles. In general this field seems to be mostly neglected on wikipedia and it is good to find another editor that has some interest, this is the reason that I didn't leave a note on the page, I would have expected to be waiting for six months and receive little to no feedback and so I was just WP:BOLD and made the changes. I guess the fact that we are talking about changes I made over a month ago illustrates my point a little bit, but if I had known there were other editors that had strong views on the page then of course I would have consulted. The 1987 AC article in general is a lot more fleshed out than other AC ones, with the information on the Staging issues, Course and the 1986 World Championships all making it a better article. Desal plant infobox and image

What's the reasoning behind removing the water image in the desal plant infobox? --One Salient Oversight (talk) 03:41, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

I think a generic photo in a navbox is fine, but an infobox photo should represent the specific subject unambiguously. The photo File:AeratedWater.jpg tells me nothing about the article and isn't even particularly attractive (thats just my opinion). A photo of a factory or a pipeline or even the ocean might be more relevant, if you had to have one. Also, its presence might be a discouragement for someone to go out and get an original photo of the plant in question. –Moondyne 04:12, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

I noticed at Kent Music Report there is a delinking of his Australian Chartbook website with the note:

Could you check David Kent for Trojan malaware? I don't know how to check for these, but the article uses the same webiste in a number of references: de-link as necessary.

Thanks. My home PC uses Avast! and it was definitely detecting a trojan on that site last night — and that only confirmed the note that someone else had previously left there. Megalitres etc

I wasn't aware that a style manual existed for megalitres so that is fine to change them. The important thing is to ensure that the measurement is consistent for all desal plant articles - I've found that the Sydney Water external sites measure it in gigalitres per year and the Perth plant measures it in metres cubed per day. In other words, the external links themselves make it confusing to compare. I made the decision to put the measurement in million litres per day but if the style guide prefers a different measurement then I'm happy with that, just so long as the figures allow readers to compare the size of plants easily.

In order to come up with the million litres/day figure I had to do some calculations, so it may be wise to check the original external links to find more accurate figures. Thanks! --One Salient Oversight (talk) 06:15, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

1 cubic metre = 1 kilolitre
1 million litres = 1 megalitre = 1000 cubic metres
1 gigalitre = 1000 megalitres

I think that cubic metres should be non-preferred — kilolitres would be better. I don't know why WA's Water Corporation uses it as often as it does. Perhaps to make the numbers look bigger! –Moondyne 07:13, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure what to do with Wonthaggi desalination plant! It strikes me there's an awful lot of un-encyclopaedic lobbying there which should be removed. Its a bit like Bell Bay Pulp Mill once was but which has now improved considerably. Similarly National Broadband Network. –Moondyne 05:07, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

I shudder every time I read it. The person who wrote it really had an axe to grind. One of the quotes they gave was from some UN report saying that Desalination was inefficient and too costly, but the quote was from a study into water supplies in Saharan Africa and the reason why desal was panned was because of the poor infrastructure in the area - so the quote was taken completely out of context and inserted by someone who opposes the Wonthaggi plant. Very annoying. The Kurnell Desalination Plant was pretty bad too but was written from a supporting perspective. Fortunately I edited it a little bit the other day and made it more neutral. Check out this pre-edited version of the article... yecch! We could probably begin incrementally improving the Wonthaggi article slowly. The problem is that they were seemingly indiscriminately mass nominated and while I would agree that some are not going to be easily improved and would not myself defend them, others are. For one, for example, the actress won and was again nominated for her performance as the character, i.e. verifiable real-world information about the reception of the character's depiction. Fair enough. I encourage you to more carefully consider these things case by case, because they really are not equal in terms of how we can improve them. I hope you can understand that it is frustrating when trying to discuss them individually to see copy and pastes. That is my concern and I partially offer that out of even my own experience, i.e. when I started here, my comments in these discussions were just not as elaborate as they are now and I too was cautioned for that a few years back and really I don't wish for anyone to experience the same. Otrem

Regarding this edit, Metro Meat Holdings was renamed Otrem Holdings so that the actual meat business and its name could be sold. I have nothing citeable. From my hazy memory of the era, after Otrem was created, the seven(?) MMH abattoirs and the Hurtle Square office building were hived off into MMI and 50% of that was sold off to the Chinese CITIC group. At some point CITIC took 100% ownership of MMI and the assets were sold off one by one, with the last two, the WA plants, sold in 1999. I know for a fact that the MMI name ~~and brand~~(?) still existed a few years later within a shell company but with no assets—I imagine that its been de-registered completely now. I have a contact who might be able to recall more details but I wont be seeing him for another week or so. Hello Moondyne, and thank you for your recent comments. I sincerely apologize for my recent error. I joined Wikipedia a year ago, but I am still learning my way around, and obviously have a long way to go. Please allow me to explain what I think happened.

I came across the Ticket of Leave page last night, and someone had previously posted a suggestion for the page to be disambiguated (it contained 2 different subjects on the same page). I saw this as an opportunity for me to help the project, and also to gain some valuable experience in doing what is probably a routine task.

This is the first time I have attempted such a task, and needless to say, I screwed it up beyond belief. When I tried to revert my changes, I got a message that they could not be undone! So I was at the keyboard until 0530 this AM, manually fixing every link I could find.

With respect to "piping the links": this is a new concept for me, but I can and will pipe all the links in the exact manner you have suggested. Are you sure this is the best way to handle this change? The only reason I ask, is that I do not want to have to go back and do a third round of changes after I have completed that task. I would like to get this valuable lesson behind me and move on ASAP.

Once I have completed fixing all the links I can find, I will attempt to fix the attribution of the authorship of the 2 Ticket of Leave pages. I suppose I will have to do this by placing a note on the each of the two "Talk" pages. It is not and was never my intent to claim credit for authorship of either of the new pages; this really was just an honest error. As far as I can tell, the Ticket of Leave page was created by Hesperian at 03:47 on 08 December 2004. Am I correct? I am sure you understand that right now, my greatest fear is compounding my previous errors even more.

I humbly ask for your help with this task, and a little friendly mentoring would be tremendously appreciated. It is my sincere intent to be an upstanding member of the Wikipedia community. List of active gold mines in Western Australia

Thanks for the example, I was looking for a better system, but, and there is always a but, will it work with footnotes that have a reference, as it uses the same template, reflist? I tried before and it only gave me a red error message. I wouldn't want to lose the references. And, while I've got your attention, what do you reckon about all the mines that are currently redlinks. Should I try to create the articles one by one, and that will take a while, or just create basic stubs for all of them and then expand them one by one? Your opinion would be appreciated. Hmm, I see what you mean. I think that the answer is here, but I am off to the footy. Will look at it tonight. Regarding redlinks, how you do it is entirely up to you. For me personally, I'm quite happy to start off with stubs and expand as I gather more info and as my time and interest intersect. Others prefer to do each properly before moving onto the next. The main thing is to make sure that you clearly assert notability in the lede, even if a stub, and ensure adequate WP:RS (esp. Zenfolio has been deleted several times on notability grounds. The first discussion makes it clear that the subject isn't really suitable material for Wikipedia. I would suggest you drop the matter and focus on improving articles which are notable. –Moondyne 11:42, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

That old one might have been taken once he got off the boat in the UK if it was by the MCC (or the Melbourne CC), in which case the author could have been born 1855 died 1940 if he was lucky and not 70 years. GANGgajang

Have noticed that an editor, User:Nouse4aname, has recently moved GANGgajang to Ganggajang, when I attempted to revert the move the user cited 'Correct capitalisation as per WP:MOSTM and WP:NC'. I've checked WP:NC and it would appear that based on the overarching objectives, using the most easily recognized name; using the mane most prevalent in reliable sources; and using the name most readers are likely to search by that the article should be GANGgajang not Ganggajang. I've also had a look at WP:NC (common names) which would seem to support my view - anyhow I was hoping that some people who are older and wiser than me might be able to give some clear directions on the correct name for this article. No. RossRSmith is a longtime advocate of the theory that the award is fiction, claiming no sources support the claim for its existence. He seems to be a minority of one however. Others refute that and cite newspaper articles which mention a champion player awrad. I don't know enough to engage in the debate, but reckon that The Argus ran two separate awards for champion players at various times, one a popular vote and another voted by a panel. The problem is that definitive RS hasn't yet surfaced. A close read of the talk page will reveal a lot.

Try some string searches at [2] eg. "champion player" (advanced search, with exclusions etc.) , but be warned, you'll have to dig deep and you may go crosseyed. –Moondyne 12:05, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

There are current reliable sources - the AFL annual stats book lists them and 100 years of AFL book lists them too... but Ross (and others, me included) have struggled to find any sources from the time that they were awarded. Maybe it's just something someone in the 50s/60s/70s made up, maybe it's real, but not that notable, maybe it's the poor text recogition (so far) on the NLA newspaper search website. I've started to rewrite it a few times (to take a "disputed" approach), but never finished it.The-Pope (talk) 04:18, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

From memory, I created the article a long time back based on a page on the fullpointsfooty website which is an eclectic collection of history and trivia. Tellingly perhaps, about 12 months ago they removed that page. Greetings all. I wrote to the AFL History Dept on 19 February 2008, plus a number of times since, asking for evidence to be produced in support of the award's existence. Didn't expect that they would be able to quote any, and they haven't. I don't have a full set of the AFL Season Guide, but CoTC award is never shown up to and including the 2000 edition - but is in by the 2003 edition. It would be nice to have the matter clarified officially. Bland statements that the matter has been thoroughly researched should be ignored, and requests made [I think] that specific date references be provided. After all, it is simple enough to locate confirmation of each year's Brownlow result.

As ever I am forever grateful to your for your help - may your day be a good one - it is very odd sleeping in a room that has been polish nationalist, gestapo/ss, nkvd that is on the top of a death deciding cellar - perhaps the fortuitous little direction finding duck that failed me in getting out of manchester and other similar locations in the uk in less than 3 goes - has flown me to a place that needed identifying... my re-reading after the horrible start (to the stub that is) says that it was built for the poles who wanted to have a polish silesia and it had some very famous krakowians who supported its establishment - then the gestapo used it for their bureaucratic needs - in all probability it was an office area that was used for the paper work for the part of the final solution business - and then the nkvd probably used it as a follow up to the polish free people to send them off to the grave (in russia) as well - and yet it doesnt show up in the feel good stuff about krakow. The name of the street was enough to give any ww2 era citizens/survivors the creeps as it was where they knew of people being killed or sorted to send to the camps that are not so well known. Anyways i will in all probability be low on edits for a while again or maybe rest of the trip - thanks for the clean up. Appreciated. Nope, see the redlinks in 2009–10 Australian cricket season. I only found 2008–09 Australian cricket season itself was red a week ago! There's a fair bit of work in keeping these current and they really need someone to take some ownership through the season. I have neither the time or inclination to do it on my own. I'm forming a view that these individual season articles are excessive and that Template:Australian cricket seasons and the 4 tournament articles would suffice. Perhaps they be merged into History of Australian cricket from 2000–01. The whole business needs wider discussion and hopefully some rationalisation. I agree with you on all counts and I apologise if you got the impression that I wasn't assuming good faith. My only remaining point of contention here is that an edit summary with "spelling and grammar" implies spelling and grammar, not rewording the said section to portray it's subject matter in a different light. You reworded the section, altered words, replaced words with other words and the effect of this was that it portrayed the subject matter of the given section in a light different than that which it was portrayed in previous to that edit. The genuine grammar and spelling fixes are more than welcomed, but be careful not to alter the text in doing so. If you've got any problems with the content itself or the way in which it portrayed the subject matter initially, then I should refer you to your own advice of not reverting the edits in question, rather, do as I have done and discuss it on the article's talk page. gut and air

I have no idea but reckon it was a case by case process and nothing ever coordinated. Most are now B. It'd be interesting to tabulate the quality status of selected Category:Top-importance Australia articles (Geo's) including dates listed and delisted. I think that the average Australian editor is getting quite disconnected from GA+ nowadays, thinking it is pie in teh sky or that the time for fine cleaning is a waste, given that most do care a lot about POV pushing/flagrant junk at grassroots level, whereas in many other places, people are only worried about the flagship/prominent stuff that affects Wiki-reputations more and don't care if an alarmingly high % of articles are in disarray due to random accretions of junk as long as the elite bits keep stacking up, because that's the only indicator of health that the casually examining Wiki peer looks at YellowMonkey (bananabucket) (Invincibles finally at Featured topic candidates) 12:28, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

"Fairbridge Western Australia" [4] (no comma) is a charity and I think the new editor was trying to create an article mainly related to that. Kingsley Fairbridge covers the history and the farmsite and now has a lot of duplicate info. I'd propose to move Fairbridge, Western Australia back to Fairbridge Western Australia and merge the duplicated info.
