A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Missvain.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Missvain,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Missvain. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Hello, my page is constantly getting rejected, but I cannot clearly understand the reason. The only way I can show sources on my article is the newspaper articles released online, and reliable web pages.

I also look for similar articles which are online on WikiPedia, and those pages have the similar sourcing ways and titles. I did my best to create the most reliable article by taking those similar online pages as examples, but though they're already approved on Wiki, my page keeps getting rejected.

And the rejection causes are not clearly stated. I am a new user on WikiPedia, and it's a bit hard for me to understand the long articles on sourcing. Please tell me what is wrong on my page and I'll do the corrections.

Hello Missvain,

Thank you for bringing to my attention the necessity for a COI disclosure. My apologies, I had no idea that this was necessary when submitting an article about a notable person in which all statements are substantiated and referenced. Now I know! I am a brand new editor on Wikipedia so learning this process has been challenging.

I have added a COI disclosure in the Edit note section. I hope that is the correct way to handle it?

At this point, is it up to you or to me to remove the COI alert you added at the top of my submission? I appreciate your guidance as to how I can put my best foot forward with getting approval for this new article submission.

Draft:David Breskin

Hello Missvain,

Thank you for reviewing the new article draft I submitted, draft:David Breskin. I read that you have a concern about a conflict of interest and wanted to ask for your help in clarifying.

In researching Wikipedia entries in advance of creating this new article, I read through countless Wikipedia articles written for associates of David Breskin in the music business that were clearly generated by the artist him/herself, the record company that put out the CDs and albums, or by colleagues or friends.

Every new recording that comes out for David Breskin's associate, Nels Cline, for instance, is immediately given its own Wikipedia page, which was clearly written by a business associate, friend, or record label of his. For example, his new album (which David Breskin produced) called Lovers:

Given all this, I am very confused after reading the COI policy you've posted, as there are clearly so many examples of articles written by someone who knows the subject in some way. Just because an article is created by someone known to the subject does not make the subject any less notable. Also, there is zero commercial angle for an entry for David Breskin, as he has nothing to sell, as opposed to the articles for these new albums such as the one I've shown you.

David Breskin has published nearly 30 records with critically acclaimed avant-garde musicians since the early 80s, he's published 8 books with major publishing houses like Faber & Faber and Penguin, and collaborated with prominent, internationally known artists such as Ed Ruscha, Gerhard Richter, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, etc. All statements in the draft include references. Nearly all collaborators and projects have their own Wikipedia articles.

Am I correct in assuming that a subject who has this level of established notability should have a Wikipedia page, regardless of who submits the draft? Though I know David Breskin, I am not being paid to generate this article. I am doing it because there are so many countless books, records, magazine articles, etc that establish his notability and would be useful to the public if shared on this platform.

I'm new to this and a little uncertain what to do when I finish making revisions to an article. 1. Do I remove your original comments and suggestions before submitting? 2. What is the code I am supposed to put at the bottom of the article when I submit it again? Or does it just appear when I click submit? I didn't add it the first time and waited 2 weeks to realize I needed to do that before submitting. :-)

Image contribution cheatsheet

Sarah (and also pinging @Pigsonthewing, AWossink, JMMuller, and OlafJanssen), I've been tasked as WIR for the Amon Carter Museum to create a simplified cheatsheet on image contribution and licensing issues and techniques for my museum and participants at our EaT's. But before doing so, I was wondering whether someone might have already done so for their institution. Are you aware of any such document that's already out there? Also, do any of you have any experience with the issue of just how picky Commons is about what person within an organization can give copyright persmission and, if they are picky, who they will accept? Hi User:TransporterMan - Amon Carter is great! They have a wonderful collection. Excited to hear you are the new WiR! Let me think about the cheatsheet, one might exist. Regarding who they will accept permissions from - as a former WiR and a former OTRS agent, it really doesn't matter. As long as we can verify that the person is indeed affiliated with the institution, and it makes sense that they are giving permission (i.e. the permission is given by a collections manager or an administrator, versus the manager of the GLAM restaurant or the janitor ;-) then it isn't a big deal who signs off. Let me think about the cheatsheet, and we'll see what everyone else says! Missvain (talk) 20:48, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
About the "verify that the person is indeed affiliated with the institution" part: Is more needed than their email come from the institution's domain, e.g. xyz@cartermuseum.org? Something in an OTRS email to me makes me think that they only will accept emails from people named on the organization's website, but it's very ambiguous. Technical news

  • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
  • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
  • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

JPOST and RS

On the Linda Sarsour page you made a statement that the JPOST is not a reliable source for Wikipedia. I would suggest you read up on WP:RS and WP:V before you do any admin work removing JPOST as a reference used in articles. Sir Joseph (talk) 20:19, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

User:Sir Joseph - thanks for visiting my talk page. If you review my writing, I follow up stating that JPost (which I use as a reference source!) should not be used for this particular "fact" (the Hamas connections) because all JPOSt is doing is sourcing an unreliable, Libertarian publication. Hi User:Antonioatrylia! Cool that you have taken interest! Thanks for noticing :) I'm doing a lot of work on things from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other collections. The Met just released data CC0 - read more here. My friend and colleague User:Jane023 created a list of works that can use Wikipedia articles from the Met. The links to go to Wikidata, but, you can see what piece has articles in other languages, or not, and links to the artwork on the Met website. Feel free to look at examples of the paintings I have done to find inspiration for layout and information. Take a look at Jane's list here: here. I fully understand the reason for deleting a copyrighted photo of Joanelle Romero and consequently appreciate your edit.

At the same time, you have deleted the brief record about the film The Girl Called Hatter Fox, which was not only the first film Romero took part in, but also the first film a Native American played a leading role in, and therefore worth noting.

I believe I am free to restore my edit.
