Re: WikiWomen's History Month

Sarah, thank you for your message. Indeed there is an event happening in Poland (already second edition of the project). I've just updated the page of WikiWomen's History Month. --Lantuszka (talk) 02:28, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Smithsonian message (harassment)

Sarah, you posted an unsolicited Smithsonian announcement on my talk page. This is the second time that I am saying that I am not interested in any messages on meet-ups from you and am asking that you cease posting meet-up annoucements on my page. Though I warned you on my talk page and your talk page when you posted the first unsolicited meetup announcement (Fine Art Edit-a-thon), I am considering this 2nd time a simple mistake; please do not make the same mistake again for a third repeated time lest I really will consider times after this as harassment. Please do not send me meetup announcements as, though meetups are a great idea, I am currently not interested in meetups. (Legal threat retracted AND recanted) Coviepresb1647 (talk) 16:17, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Wrongs lie on both my part and your part, and I am apologizing here for my wrongs in the conflict. I apologize for my deficient charity/love on my part in this conflict. I apologize additionally for overreacting and the resulting legal threat. I also apologize for subjecting you to an unwarranted legal threat (and the negative emotions related to that subjection). I do feel bad and sorry for these wrongs that I did to you. I will certainly double-check myself in the future on how I related to you and to others. I do not, never have, and will never consider reconciliation (dialogue and/or any related apologies) to be harassment toward me. Hence, per ANI's thread Legal_threat where you expressed to the admins that you desire to apologize to me, I will welcome an apology for the wrongs on your part. Signpost feature

Hi Sarah, just reviewing the piece and writing you in response now; do you mind terribly if we move the conversation to the Newsroom, so other interested editors might see it and share insights and suggestions? Regards, Skomorokh 16:19, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

That's fine, I wasn't sure what the protocol was. Sarah (talk) 16:20, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Super, I've left some initial comments under the "Article status" section there; take a look and let me know your thoughts when you get the chance. Cheers! Skomorokh 16:56, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Ok. I leave for vacation tomorrow, so I'm limited on my time and have to focus on wrapping up some other things. I'll do my best to take a look soon. Sarah (talk) 17:48, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sarah, just a note to say I've responded in the newsroom; if you get a chance, take a look. Hope you're enjoying the holidays otherwise! Skomorokh 13:39, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Teahouse absence

Hi Sarah, I'm not gone, I've just been...busy. I wrote two articles from scratch last week, helped a high level COI editor through OTRS and got tangled in a Deletion Review debate. I'm also trying to assist my own educational project (The Wikipedia Adventure) and substantially write or rework two other articles. That's the problem with any great new idea on Wikipedia, everyone's so frickin busy already. But I have not given up. I've read over the Q & A pages (which are quite well staffed), the host discussions, and the invite instructions. I'll charitably say that I'm lurking, biding my time to get involved. I'm sure that's not what you'd ideally like to hear, and if I'm taking up someone's spot who will be both eager and available, then I can step aside. I hope that in the next few weeks I will have more time to invest. Invites are something I've been dreading a bit, but I'm trying to get my head around how important they are to bootstrap the project and get it off on the right foot with a critical mass of involvement. That's a lot of words to say, I'm sorry I haven't gotten around to it yet. Let me know what you think. Ocaasi t | c 04:42, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

  • I'm still in, just a little busy in real life. Usually I deal with more complex situations, and it looks like others are handling things quite fine at Q&A right now. Thanks for your concern! :) - Mailer Diablo 13:32, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks to you both! We do have a waitlist of folks now interested in being hosts, so I'm just pinging people, to make sure that the Teahouse is on your agenda during this very important pilot period. specially because we really need help with inviting new editors to the project. And yes, so far we haven't had any issues with anything too complex (but, I guess it depends on what complex is). If either of ya find a few minutes of free time, and I know that can be tough, help with bringing new editors to the Teahouse would be fabulous! See you two there, and again, please let me know if other obligations are keeping you away, I'll totally understand! Sarah (talk) 13:35, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi Sarah, thanks very much for the barnstar! Much appreciated. Graham87 05:07, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Active and Online

As promised, my exams are over and am online. It will take me some time to be fully active though as I have a lot of backlogged Wikipedia work and I'll be travelling for two days from Monday. But promise to give the Teahouse top priority. Just give me some time to go through all the stuff. I also replied to a question on the questions page. Sorry for the delay. But am online now. --Debastein (talk) 05:47, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Awesome, thanks for the update Debastein! I did see you active. The Teahouse really needs help with invitations, so any help with that would be much appreciated! Sarah (talk) 13:37, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
And PS, I hope your classes went well. Again, I understand! Sarah (talk) 13:37, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Sarah. One of the n00b participants in the Teahouse was bitten by a bot about an hour ago. I left them a note but thought you might want to try and engage further. Sorry to ping you while on vacation, but I do see you've been editing recently. Alarbus (talk) 09:03, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. The Teahouse is part of my fellowship, so as of this afternoon I'll be "AFK" from anything related to one of my two jobs or school, and that includes portions of the Teahouse (but not all portions, just some). It looks like you engaged her pretty well. Thanks! Sarah (talk) 13:39, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Sarah goes on vacation today

Hi everyone. I am on vacation as of later on this afternoon, eastern time, for 6 days. You might occasionally see me making some edits, but, I won't be providing timely responses on my talk page or reply to emails unless it's an emergency. If you are in need of something related to the Teahouse, please ping the talk pages or you can ping Jtmorgan, Siko, or Heather. Thanks for everything and see you soon. Women's History Month and Texas First Ladies and Gents

Hi Sarah,

It was suggested over at WikiProject United States that I let you know about this.

For Women's History Month, I created List of First Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas and an accompanying Navbox. It's an area that has slipped through the cracks in Wikipedia. Photos are needed, as are individual pages. While all the presidents of the Republic, and the Governors of the state, have had individual articles created, most of the First Ladies of Texas have not, becoming neglected footnotes in history as names married to important persons. The state's only First Gentleman - James E. Ferguson - has his own page, but only because he was first a Governor. Any help anyone would care to give would be welcome. Maile66 (talk) 20:16, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

And a P.S. Here. Maybe no surprise, but perhaps I stumbled upon one of the many needy areas in Wikipedia, or the states in general. There is a Category:Spouses of United States state governors, which therein is missing sub categories of American Samoa, Arizona, Delaware, District of Columbia, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Palau, South Dakota, United States Virgin Islands and Washington state. Even on the sub categories listed, individual pages on spouses are very sparse. As I was doing research for the spouses in Texas, I was a little disappointed that the official state resources did not have the same kind of bios on the former spouses as it did the former governors. The spouses also served the state. Maybe that's the same situation within other individual states. Given how women have been airbrushed out, it's an achievement that spouses of Presidents have not suffered the same fate. Maile66 (talk) 12:35, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Re:Looking for you...

Hello Sarah!
First of all — thank you for such a nice #WikiLove on February 14, I seem to have sadly missed that one (I don't remember getting a notification). As for the IRC message, I just wanted to let you know that your study of the involvement of women in Wikipedia has been recently cited in a very controversial discussion, with lots of media coverage in Poland. And so your name has been there on the Polish Internet and in the press, sand I am now proud to say that I know such a famous person :-)) Cheers, and have a happy week! odder (talk) 23:40, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Some rambling points, leading to a question, plus a separate question about Wikimania

Hello SarahStierch. I see that you are on vacation (color me jealous), so I'll understand if it takes time for a response.

I am getting more involved in copyright and paraphrasing issues. Some are clear cut, but many are not so easy. I just added an item to my user page to-do list to work on creating some case studies of paraphrasing. Wikipedia has an interesting challenge—on the one hand, we want editors to lean heavily on sources when they write material, and if a statement in an article cannot be supported by a source, it can be challenged. On the other hand, if the wording is too close to the source, even when not a copy paste, it runs into a different problem. Finding that middle ground is tricky, and trickier so because we as a community have not provide clear guidance to editors. It is my hope to take a small step toward providing that guidance.

An additional complication is my belief (based upon reading some of the discussions about these issues) that Wikipedia does not want to set the hurdle at the legal definition, but something more conservative. Of course, we always have to comply with the law at a minimum, but we have opted to draw the line a big tougher, which makes sense to me. However, that means we have to define the boundaries ourselves, we cannot look to legal cases as guidance, except possibly to provide insight into what issues are relevant.

I noticed that you used Feminists who changed America, 1963-1975 as a source in a number of articles. This reminded me of some edits I've done, and still wonder if I did OK. I edit women's basketball players and coaches articles, and I stumbled across David L. Porter's Basketball: A Biographical Dictionary, which has turned out to be a wonderful resource, and I've used it in a number of articles, for example, Hazel Walker. Because it is a collection of biographies, very similar in style to Feminists who changed America, one has to avoid the temptation to simply borrow material. I've always know one cannot copy and paste, but I've learned that one has to be careful about copying the structure (as SandyGeorgia warns). I also have some canned advice I give to new editors, to point out that relying on a single source creates a danger that one will unconsciously adopt the structure of the source, and run into the danger of paraphrasing too closely. I haven't heard any complaints about my edits, but let's be honest, I'm writing about women's basketball players, not pop stars, so I don't think the articles I work on get much traffic.

I am planning to look at some of the articles using Feminists who changed America as a source. Some are edited by you, others, such as Muriel Fox, were edited by others. I've only just started; at the moment, I don't have any specific concerns, but if I do see issues that deserve mention, I'd like to follow up. While it is normal practice to raise such issues on the respective article talk pages, I would prefer to start by bringing them to your attention. Let me know if you prefer something else - I have seen editors who do not like article issues raised on their talk pages, and request that the discussion go to the article talk page, so I'll respect whichever venue you prefer.

If I may, I'd like to raise a completely different question. I see that you attended Wikimania 2011. I saw the notice for Wikimania 2012, and I'm mulling over whether to attend. I spent a fair part of yesterday viewing some of the video summaries of the sessions. I fully expected that viewing them would convince me I have to go, but I'm still on the fence. One disappointing observation—most of the videos captured the presenter (understandable) but never showed the slides. In many cases, the message was heavily dependent on the slide content, so I was not able to follow some of the discussions. I note that the YouTube often had a link to a Wikimedia page, which had a placeholder for the slides, but none of the ones I checked had a copy of the slides (update, found some). Is it possible I'm simply looking in the wrong place? More importantly, as you are on staff, can you tell me who I should talk to about this? If I could write to the right person, who might be in a position to encourage the participants from last year to upload their slides, it might help some (OK, me) to make a decision about attending this year.) I looked again, and I now see some of the copyright material, but I don't see Samuel Klein's slides. I think the place for them is here. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:54, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi SPhilbrick, thanks for stopping by. Regarding copying and paraphrasing. I could see how unintentional paraphrasing could be seen in articles, mine and others. As many times, when writing about such specific things without many online resources, it can be hard to manipulate the text when biographies are written in a certain structure naturally and most resources follow that. But, I understand the concern. I have read up a bit on the concept, and I could see how perhaps I have made some mistakes. As a longtime editor, it's rather embarrassing to know I've potentially violated an area of Wikipedia that I care so passionately about (heck, I lecture on copyright). Is there anything I can do or begin to do myself? Feel free to bring things up on my talk page, thanks again!

Regarding Wikimania, I'm not sure about the slides/presentation situation. Hmmm...oh, it might be a good idea to ask User:Deror_avi, as he was the general manager of the Haifa Wikimania? (I do think I uploaded mine, on Slideshare, at least). I'm only volunteering in a few areas of Wikimania, but I think Deror might be able to provide information about last year for you. I do hope you'll be in DC, I'm always looking forward to meeting passionate Wikipedians like yourself. Thanks for everything. Sarah (talk) 21:32, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

First off, let me say how happy I am at your attitude. As for what to do next, let me apologize for a timing issue, which has two aspects. First, one of my passions is March Madness basketball, which started today. It is not all-consuming, but between that and trying to squeeze in some work, plus the need to do some basketball related Wikipedia items, my other Wikipedia pursuits often lag a bit in March. Second, I see portions of Feminists who changed America, 1963-1975 on Google books, but as I went to look closely as one section (involving Muriel Fox, an article I think you have not touched), the key sections were not viewable. I went ahead and ordered a copy, but it is scheduled to show up April 3. That shouldn't stop me cold, but the combination of things mean I will be on the slow side for a some time. My hope is that we can treat this as a collaboration. AS you said, when sitting with a nicely written source, and not much else, it is challenging to make sure that the source material isn't reflected too closely. My plan is to pick a couple article, chat about what I see, and discuss whether there's a way or a need to rephrase or restructure.
On WikiMania, thanks for Deror's name, I'll check that out. I had listened to the copyright lecture, which frankly didn't do much for me, but I did find the slides, and re-listened, and the second experience was much better. It was also humbling. I've spent a fair amount of time reading about copyright, and while I was gratified that some of the material was not new, some of it was new, so a good learning experience, but yet another reminder about how tough the subject is.
Hope you enjoyed your vacation, I'll try to respond shortly.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 23:40, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Re: March madness. I'm from Indiana originally, so I totally understand your love (I went to Indiana University, actually, and grew up near the Butler University) for March Madness. :) Keep me posted on what I can do to help and how I can learn to "avoid" issues like this. I might even go look at a few articles of mine (generally the stubs/starts would seem to be prime real estate for issues like this) that might not even be oriented with that specific book, and take a look at them based on the paraphrasing documentation and see what I can do if anything needs to be done, if that's okay, of course.
Re: Wikimania. Keep in mind that a lot of the presentations are done by Wikipedians. Meaning that some folks don't always have the background or skillset in public speaking that others might have (i.e. public speaking is part of my work, when others are often tech-heads who have the confidence and feel comfortable giving a lecture for the first time at Wikimania) so you will find some that are not that great (trust me, I've taken a few unintentional naps at Wikimania :( ) and some that are mindblowing (woo!). You can also take a look at what is being considered for the conference this year [1]. This year we'll have a mix of Wikipedians, tech professionals, museum professionals, women in tech advocates, etc. And before the conference we'll actually be having AdaCamp coinciding with hackdays - it's an event thrown by an organization I'm involved with, the Ada Initiative. So that might interest you.. but don't let the occasional lame presentation throw you off. It's more than just the presentations - it's an amazing opportunity to meet people, have fun with fellow Wiki-people, brainstorm about new ideas, etc. Sunday the proposal submissions close, so you could always submit something too :) Later! Sarah (talk) 14:11, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Teahouse update and question

Hi Sarah! I finally got around to doing some invites, mainly off the database report sheet. It wasn't as bad as I had thought ;) I posted about three ideas that would make the invite process more efficient, at the Teahouse talk page, at Village Pump Technical, and at the Bot Requests page. Although other editors thought the ideas would be generally helpful, I haven't heard back from anyone with the ability (or time) to actually code them. So I wanted to run the ideas by you in the hope that you had access to some folks who might be able to whip these up in the near future.

  • Idea 1: Twinkle modification or userscript: I think what really would make the invite process effortless is a script which automatically posted a Teahouse invite to the talk page and then loaded the email user page if enabled, all the while preloading messages and usernames as it went along. I don't know how to code this myself, but I believe this is doable. It would could down each invite to only say 20 seconds rather than about 1 minute per which it's taking right now to change everything.
  • Idea 2: 'Invited' tracking: I would also like if the database reports had a column for 'has been invited which updated whenever a teahouse invite was on the userpage. This would save time and help us coordinate our efforts. A simple bot could be written which checked the userpages of those listed on the database reports page for the word 'Teahouse' and if present, updated a column on the respective report entry that the user had been invited.
  • Idea 3: Invite bot. If not now then after the pilot, we should look into an invite bot which could consider a number of factors such as rapidity of edits, absence of blocks, absence of warnings, as well as other sophisticated data such as WikiTrust or WP:STiki metadata which judges vandalism likelihood using a computer algorithm. Although part of Teahouse's charm is its personal connection with users, If Teahouse grows, it will be unideal if we have to continue doing this manually, i think. So we might start looking at intelligent machine assistance. This could still be done in a very friendly and intelligent way, and would make sure we didn't 'miss' anyone who could make a positive contribution.

I hope you like these ideas and know some people who might be able to work on them. Please let me know if I can be helpful in bringing them forward. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 15:15, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ocaasi - I am on vacation right now (out of the US) but wanted to ping you real fast - I did ping User:Jtmorgan about your great suggestions, as he's the "bot/database/tracking/whatnot" guy for the Teahouse pilot :) So let's see what his input is (if he hasn't pinged you already or you two haven't connected on the Teahouse talk pages, I haven't had time yet to follow changes on those pages). So just an FYI and I'm so glad you're participating now =) Sarah (talk) 22:22, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I forgot about vacation... go back to the beach!! I did ask Jtmorgan and he said he wasn't sure he could do it. I'm sure people are out there who can, I'm just not sure if they're available or see it as a high priority. But it might be a high priority for the Teahouse pilot, so I figured you were the right person to ask. I'll keep digging around, and when you get back, you can too!  :) Have fun. Hi Sara -

I just read your message inviting me to the female wikipedia editors survey. Thanks! Unfortunately, the link to the survey site did not work for me. Is your survey over?

Teahouse

Hello,

I often edit (as now) using a mobile device when I have a few minutes to spare when working. The type of work I do in construction keeps me away from a desktop computer for long periods of time. I like to give a quick answer to a student or make a comment on an AfD when I have a chance. But I can't easily cut and paste or work with templates with an Android device. So it seems that I can't easily comply with the Teahouse rules. I will try to participate a bit on those occasions when I have access to a desktop computer, but those are the times when I usually write Wikipedia articles. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:55, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

I just responded to a Teahouse question and used the talkback template for the first time. I will try to develop the skill of inviting new users as well. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 22:21, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the confidence you've shown in me, Sarah. I will do my best, but I need to get back to "real world" work now. Maybe I can get started this evening. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 22:26, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
I hear you =) Trust me! And I understand, totally. I do hope you can do as much as you can, without comprising your life, of course. Wikipedia isn't life.......just a major part of it ;-) See you there (and hopefully at Wikimania - great work you also did at the recent SF edit-a-thon!!) Sarah (talk) 22:29, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Rebeca Matte, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Depressed and Charity (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Your note to me re Teahouse--I'm a bit confused

Sarah, please understand I'm not complaining. I'm just new to all this, and trying to figure out how things work. I posted a question on the Teahouse Talk page. Then I got a notice on my own Talk page that said you'd answered the question. When I click the link, it takes me to my question. But the only answer I see is from one Mlm42, Mark. Jiminy Cricket

Hi Sarah. I like the graphic. It's going very well and I'm finding my way around the site which is interesting and sometimes surprising. I'd like to get involved in some of the maintenance activities when time allows but first I'm concentrating on article work and have picked up a couple that were in poor shape to see if I can expand and improve them. At some point I'll have them reviewed and maybe try to put them up for good article. That's in the longer term as there's a lot of work to be done first. But, yes, I'm enjoying the site and I only wish I had more spare time to spend here.

I hope you are well. I see you are busy in real life too so you must have the same availability problem re the site. Very best wishes to you and thank you for writing to me. With wikilove, --Brian (talk) 05:22, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

I am writing an article on rabbit digestive system. Summarizing and paraphrasing the highest quality sources I have and hooking it up to relevant articles in physiology and biochemistry and also getting citations down so they are in the correct form. Every fact will be supported by references from the highest quality sources :)

Cited Wikipedia several times yesterday in my online newspaper article.

Hi Sarah

Thanks for making the outsider feel welcome, hope things are going well for you. I'm still getting the hang of some of the controls and gizmos, but I think I'll find plenty to do around here. So far my only contribution has been a hefty tidy up on a video game plot, so I'll probably be one of the guys who goes around doing the tidying up ;-). Hope I get this signature thing right, I'm just copying the other guys, haha. User:BluesHarpGuy (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 11:26, 21 March 2012 (UTC).

Hey! Ah, many Wikipedians are or were outsiders. Heck, I feel like one online and offline, but, Wikipedia is a good place for outsiders. Yes, gizmos, even I can't figure those out most of the time. Sounds cool about the video game, and yes, tidying up is awesome - while we can always use new articles, we *really* need people helping to clean up articles, so thumbs up to that. You almost got the signature right. When you go to sign your talk page comments, all you have to do is type four tildes: ~~~~ and voila! :) Sarah (talk) 13:11, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

my Teahouse timestamp

Hi Sarah, Another editor brought it to my attention a few minutes ago, and I subsequently figured out the problem... I had created a template on March 11, and locked in the date/time. Mea culpa! I fixed the template after it was brought to my attention, so the last few invites have been correct. Do I need to try and correct the date on the ones that are wrong? I sent out a lot of invites between March 11 and today... --Rosiestep (talk) 04:18, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Teahouse templates

I've gone ahead and created templates for the Teahouse Invitation and Thank you userpage notices. They can be found at {{Teahouse invitation}} and {{Teahouse thank you}}. These can also be used to add to Twinkle preferences. Just go here, and scroll down to "Custom welcome templates to display" and enter the two templates separately. It works out rather nice! Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 04:44, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Cindy! My only issue is that when I used the templates it automatically signs your name, not mine. I'm not sure how to make that automatic (like in the original template). That's okay though, it's cool that templates are that easy to add to Twinkle. I am currently using Writ Keeper's script. If we can figure out how to fix the signature issue...then we'd be good to go (unless I'm missing something, and I very well could be, I'm not that savvy with templates n'stuff!). Sarah (talk) 16:04, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
I noticed that and I'm working out the kinks right now. I also don't like how it is adding my signature twice. Ugh. I'll keep working on it and keep you posted. I just set up an alternate account to test the templates. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 16:23, 24 March 2012 (UTC) (edited to add: I think an admin needs to delete my first attempt at {{Teahouse welcome}}. I think it is messing it all up. My latest attempt on my test page, rather than placing the invitation, added a redirect to the template from the welcome template. UGH) Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 16:35, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
Sarah, try the "invitation" and "thank you" templates at User talk:Cindamuse (public), but substitute the template. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 17:19, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Sarah

Thanks for the Barnstar Sarah, I appreciate your encouragement.

The Sara Niemietz bio has been an interesting project, with an interesting subject and overlapping achievements in such a young life.

It looks like the article has been rated pretty fairly and added to categories, which knocks off one thing on my learn how todo list. I had just started going through the sections for who, what, where, why and how. Also. checking for Neutrality, so I'm not surprised if the article has earned that tag at the moment.

I'm not sure which article will be next, there are some old(e) English words I'd like to see brought back into the common vernacular -- I don't have the chops for that yet

Steve 009o9 (double o nine o nine) 009o9 (talk) 23:28, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Don't knock the categories and ratings off your to-do list yet...you'll have to do them yourself soon enough =) It is pretty cool though to see others come along and do all those things for your article, you know? The neutrality thing can be tough, some words you think are neutral might not be, etc. A fun page to browse (and learn from) is Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Words to watch, so take a look at that for some insight into neutral words when you have sometime to kill. It's a good read (well, by Wikipedia policy standards..). If you're into "old timey" words, we also have a sister project about words called Wiktionary. I don't hang out there, but, there's a team of folks who do and you might stumble across something interesting there. Talk to you later! Sarah (talk) 16:16, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Sarah,

Okay, I now see the owner of the edits "WikiProjectBannerShell" and a disambiguation -- Thank you! I would have never guessed that the bannershell would belong on the Talk page. I was busy looking for clues and rules under the DEFAULTSORT area/section.
Also, one of the old English word I'm interested in is, "Hireling". Hireling is in the Wiktionary (Thanks again), but there is need for expansion. I see that "Hireling" is currently a redirect to Employment#Employee, again, the word has a much more diabolical history than just employment.

Thanks again for your help, Steve 009o9 (talk) 18:06, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Neha. Good question. I might not be able to provide the right answer, so I'd reask your question as the Teahouse! I'm afraid my answer might not be that helpful (because I'm not specifically sure what the answer is). Just click this link and then the "Click here to ask a question," button! (talk page stalker), Dr. Sharma, you created the article in what's called your "user page", where you are supposed to tell us about yourself, your goals, opinions and purpose here. I've moved that article to serial extraction, where I hope it will be worked on by others. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:54, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Some comments on an article you've edited

I'm honestly not certain how to proceed, but I took my first stab by adding some comments to a talk page Talk:Mimi Abramovitz. My intent is to list things that I observe, then change some where I can, but hope that some others may chime in. It's a fairly low traffic page, so I'm not expecting much, as much as anything, I'm trying to document my thought process if I do end up making substantial changes.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:40, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

I looked at Margie Adam and it looks great to me. My main question is whether Women's Music should have the "M" capitalized, as it is in Feminists who changed America. I glanced at a quick search and saw many examples capitalized, but I confess I'm not planning to research this further, just noting in case you are anal enough to care. I know Wikipedia eschews overuse of capitalization of the second word, often an issue in section headings, but I'm reasonably sure that doesn't trump usage in RS. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 23:55, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

I see your name EVERYWHERE on talk pages and I think every GLAM discussion, so it is nice to finally leave my John Hancock on yours. I normally wouldn't bother a person with a one shot mistake, but since I can actually leave a talk message...

With Akatsuka Jitoku and other Japanese names, they can be given in Western order or Eastern (Chinese) order. Akatsuka is difficult because he was born before the Emperor's decree (1885), but lived most of his life afterwards. Looking at the reference, the book gives name in Eastern order. So, his surname is Akatsuka. Artist are also difficult because they can be known outside Japan in Eastern order... Sumo wrestlers and Kabuki actors are always Eastern order. Now, I'm going to go off and celebrate this momentous occasion. Bgwhite (talk) 06:36, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jenny. We can't use those Match.com links, they don't count as reliable references. I have a bad feeling that this article probably won't be kept. Again, the match.com and primary sources don't count. I'm sorry! :( Sarah (talk) 17:34, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for taking the time to look at it Sarah. I sincerely appreciate it. I will remove the Match.com links now... Jennyspencer (talk) 17:53, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

No, you don't have to remove them. Primary sources can be used in an article, but they don't help establish notability. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 18:13, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Sarah, thank you so much for inviting me to TeaHouse! It helps a lot considering I am completely new to Wikipedia! For my English class we are posting Wikipedia articles on subjects we care about. Before I get too far into editing, I am trying to ask around for feedback. If you wouldn't mind taking a few minutes out of your day to take a look at my edits to a Wikipedia article, I would greatly appreciate it. Hasse page

Sarah, I proposed the Clara H. Hasse page for deletion because the subject of the article was an "an assistant horticulturist and botanist." I just don't see how that's remotely notable. You removed the deletion request with the comment "I mean come on." I truly don't mean to be snarky, but can you please explain this? I only recently started doing New Page Patrols, so I may be misunderstanding some of the Wiki guidelines. But, this seemed like a pretty obvious article for deletion, so if I missed something, please let me know. Thanks!JoelWhy (talk) 20:08, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

The editor has now added a 'under construction' tag. So, it may just be that my deletion request was premature. :)JoelWhy (talk) 20:29, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
The article now attributes an important discovery to this lady, so A7 definitely doesn't apply. But I'd agree that the version that you tagged was A7 worthy. Note to Sarah, with New page patrol in the state that it is, it is always safest to include a key notability claim in your first save. ϢereSpielChequers 09:56, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Hi Sarah, I noticed that you de-activated the orphan tag from this article almost immediately after it was placed without adding any links to it from other articles. I've added four links to it today and just wanted to leave some tips for de-orphaning if you encounter a similar situation. Most university articles have lists of notable alumni (e.g. University of Michigan), most cities have lists of notable residents (e.g. Muskegon, Michigan), and then there are the "Year in X" articles, which can be a big help. See Category:Years by topic and its subcats for the full list. I added the article under the "Deaths" section in 1926 in science, and the publication of her work on citrus canker under the "Life sciences" section in 1915 in science. The article could also be further integrated into Citrus canker.
I know its annoying to see a tag on an article, but properly de-orphaning an article integrates it into the encyclopedia and helps to attract both readers and potential editors to it. Articles which aren't integrated generally languish for years with virtually no readers and no improvement or expansion either. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 07:49, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi everyone, the article was part of a series created during Wikipedia:Meetup/DC_30. As we were all sitting in the room together, new editors, many who had never made an article before in their lives, started to realize that their articles were being nominated for deletion. In order to save these articles from their impending doom, the fastest and easiest way was to remove the prod tags quickly, and state that the articles were still under development. This all happened in a matter of minutes, and as an editor of Wikipedia for ten years teaching approximately 7 new editors how to edit - a lot was going on very quickly. I appreciate everyone's efforts, and input and encourage you to include the original creators of these articles in these discussions. I'm quite aware also about the orphan tag process, and I've been removing the tags and de-orphaning articles for quite sometime (and also nominating some for deletion that just plain aren't fit to be on Wikipedia, at that!). Again, I encourage you all to say hi to the new editors from the edit-a-thon, and perhaps touch base and encourage them that you helped contribute to their articles, as I know it'll mean a lot. Thanks again for helping with Clara Hasse! Sarah (talk) 15:01, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
And, just another note - I tagged the article "under construction" on behalf of User:Digitaleffie who intended on expanding on it, but, it looks like it's been done. (You can see where I share some citations on her talk page, after we talked about them at the event.) I really appreciate your work Voceditnore. And apologize if my sudden removal of the too quickly attached orphan tag caused you concern. Sarah (talk) 15:03, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
I also took the time to place a comment on each talk page regarding articles created, so experienced editors will be aware of this. It's a good thing I guess I should consider doing in the future. Sarah (talk) 15:12, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Good heavens, Sarah, I'm not remotely upset by you removing the orphan tag. I'm not even the one who put it there. But since you removed it with the code that says you had attempted to de-orphan it but couldn't think of any articles to link back, I assumed it was true and thought I'd pass on some tips. Could you help remove the intro chapter filed in a wrong field?

The Sherbourne Common Article is entirely written by me, no copy-paste, only using reliable sources. Also I used primary, secondary, third party sources, respecting the notability and the golden rule.

Also, I incorporated 18 different sources, referenced them properly in the article, considering them very notable, just as the architectural value of the Sherbourne Common in Toronto - if necessary there are more then those 18 links to be listed.

Could you help remove the intro chapter filed in a wrong field that appears before the article that has no edit button and I can not edit out /remove, which appears not to be referenced, although the same chapter is also filed in a right filed, appearing right under the problematic chapter and is referenced properly.

Also, S.C. is mentioned in several articles in Wikipedia, so it is notable in ever sence of meaninig (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=Sherbourne+Common&title=Special%3ASearch).

Thx., regardless of the potential help. 99.240.30.181 (talk) 02:58, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Editing problem. (Ever Night)

Could you fix the Ever Night page because some anonymous editor are messing with it. And can you also change its privacy so that no one would edit it carelessly. Jiangye (talk) 04:31, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
