expos/nationals debate

There is a major debate going on, and I wondered if you might want to chime in. The debate involves how to deal with franchise moves in baseball. The question is whether Montréal Expos should be its own article or if it should redirect to Washington Nationals. All other instances of franchise moves in MLB redirect the old team name to the new team name, and the history of the franchise is covered within the new team name (for MLB, NBA and NFL examples, see here. Some people are confused and think the Expos and the Nats are different teams. Some people don't want to upset Canadian readers.

Indeed, the Washington Nationals are not a new team - the Montreal Expos franchise has moved to Washington, and the old franchise name should redirect to the new franchise name, just like the 20+ instances of this occuring in Wikipedia. For example, Brooklyn Dodger history resides in the Los Angeles Dodgers article. New York Giants history, including the Shot Heard 'Round the World, resides in the San Francisco Giants article.

I had already done Paige and Rose; I think I did some edits to Cobb, but not as much. I hadn't gotten to Speaker or Aaron yet. I agree that the large tables don't add much to these articles; they take up a massive amount of space, and the stats are easily available through external links. I'm inclined to leave them for the time being on articles which don't have detailed synopses of the player's career, but see no reason to keep them in the long run. Negro Leagues

2005 Boston Red Sox Season

Check this out if you have time. I am looking forward to a deletion motion, similar to my 2005 New England Patriots Schedule article's status at present. Well, the big question is that of significance - we know, for example, that the 2005 World Series will be noteworthy, but if the Red Sox were to suddenly have a lousy season and finish fourth, an article on their 2005 season would be somewhat unnecessary. Their dramatic fall from the top could likely be well-covered in the 2005 in baseball article, I suspect. Otherwise, it seems that the articles would constitute little more than news reports and commentary. I know there's a place for this kind of article, but I'm not sure Wikipedia is it. As for park effects, that would likely make an excellent article, though the specifics for each stadium should go on their separate pages. The main article would simply be an overview, with significant examples and comparisons, along with the history of study in the area. MisfitToys 20:55, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

Firpo Marberry

Great job on expanding the Firpo Marberry article, and thank you. But I was just wondering: Why did you remove the "baseball umpires" category. Baseball Library said he was a Major League umpire briefly. Thanks.

Well, he only umpired briefly - not even a full season. It's mentioned in the article, but the minor nature of it doesn't seem to merit putting him in the category; there have been numerous major league players who probably umpired in more games than he did, on a purely substitute basis. Everyone currently in the category umpired in the World Series, and there are about 200 umpires who have worked in the postseason or All-Star Game - they seem to be the ones clearly belonging in the category. I'm not sure it's worthwhile to put people in categories for occupations they held for a only a couple of months, with no particular distinguishment. MisfitToys 22:32, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)

List of New York Yankees people

I recently made the article "Ray Mack." Mack was on the Yankees for a VERY brief period. He is listed on baseball reference as having played for them for 1 game, and has no other numbers, all 0's across the board. So I'm assuming he pinch ran or something.

So, anyway, I added him to List of NY Yankees people, which I'm assuming is correct since he is listed as playing a game with them. However, I wasn't sure what position to put since he never played the field as a yankee. I put 2B because he was a second basemen for his entire career.

So, I was just wondering how you wanted to handle that.

My goodness, there's a reason

I call it continuity. The reason I use a seperate line is that to show the series score. By the way, what's with the semi-colon on the end next to the italicized recap? NoseNuggets 4:25 AM US EDT Oct 19 2005.

Baseball postseason

Hi there! I noticed you've been following up the 1995 postseason articles with the umpire entries and was just wondering where you were getting the listing of umpires. If I had a list, I could add them in the initial page when I get around to doing some other years.

Also, do you like the format or have any ideas on improvement? Do you think we should port that format over to some other postseason entries, such as the page on the 2003 American League Division Series. Or maybe a fusion of the two, since the 2003 entry gives a short recap of the events of the game, whereas the pages I've done are pretty much just stats and results, with no information about the events of any one particular game. Right now they are pretty much just cookie cutter pages. I'm still relatively new here, and I'm not sure, but could we make the template a standard for all pages about the postseason series? I've been collecting data on the umpires over the past year or so; the postseason assignments were in The Sporting News annual guides, and I just double-check them before posting so I get them in the right order (crew chief first, and the game rotation). The only playoff games where I had a hard time finding them were for the 1981 Division Series (the split season playoff games); the TSN guides didn't list them, but Retrosheet has them in their box scores, so I'll have those once we get to those 1981 games. I admit the basic beginnings of each page are pretty standard, but the longer they get, the more distinct and individual they become. MisfitToys 20:22, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

I see someone reverted comments (yours, I think) about the possible reasons for the low ratings in 2005. The answer is quite simple: No Yankees. The fans did not know ahead of time that it would be a sweep, nor that Game 3 would run so long, but there are many Yankees fans across the land, and about as many of them aren't interested in the Series if their Yanks aren't in it. This was the reason the Series of 1997 was also low-rated. I don't know if I can prove it directly, but I think it was being commented on at the time in 1997, and I think a little research would confirm that as fact. Wahkeenah 04:48, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

The fans don't know ahead of time that it will be a sweep, true; but the ratings tend to rise game-by-game as the series progresses, especially if the games go back-and-forth between the teams, so a sweep tends to have lower ratings. A lot of casual watchers don't tune in until a few games in, and sometimes don't bother watching at all unless there's a real struggle between the teams. And true, also, that viewers didn't know how long Game 3 would run - but as the game goes late into the night, many people turn the game off and go to bed (even Yankee fans), and that does affect ratings. (I would also point out that while a lot of people don't watch the Series unless their favorite team is in it, there are also a lot of people who won't watch if the same teams keep getting there. Not suggesting that the two groups are equal, but it goes both ways.) I also suspect the ratings might have been higher had Thomas and Bagwell been healthy and having solid years; ratings also tend to go up when there are big stars involved (did either team have a strong MVP candidate?). It looks like what's really needed is an in-depth analysis of the ratings to see where the demographics are, and also how the ratings change from game to game. Not really, as nearly as I can tell. I've run across some discussion of Buck O'Neil, more for his overall accomplishments than simply as a player, and Minnie Minoso might have a shot (though I'd rather see him elected as a major leaguer) - and it doesn't hurt that they're almost the only ones still living. But they both have articles already; apart from the ones that are just stubs now and need fleshing out (Pete Hill and Cristobal Torriente, for starters), I'd probably suggest Mule Suttles, Ray Brown, Sol White, Frank Grant, Dick Redding, and Louis Santop to begin. Year-related categories

I notice you created Category:Elections by year and Category:Years in baseball, both containing articles whose titles begin with a year. If you have time, could you please go through and make sure the articles are sorted in their respective year (or year-in) parent categories using sortkeys as outlined at Wikipedia:Categorization#Year categories? (Don't forget to start the sortkey with a capital letter.) If you've done this already, thanks and sorry for bugging you about this. Well, I suspect I created the elections category based on a pre-existing ghost (red-linked) category; I really haven't had much to do (if anything) with those articles, and likely just added the missing category.
