Sorry to hear about that: sometimes people can be a bit overzealous in anti-vandalism patrolling or whatnot. You might try and use edit summaries: explain what you are changing briefly in the edit summary, especially if you are doing something controversial. That way other editors can see why you are changing it and are probably less likely to revert your edits.

In the past (My IP is not static, so the edits that I have made are not all associated with this IP) when I feel I am making an edit that will be reverted I use as many reliable citations and I post on the talk page, and I used edit summary- it's more of a general attitude I find among those who spend a lot of time editing the Wiki and little time on other things. It's particularly rampant on specialized wikis that are not Wikipedia, but that even Wikipedia is not immune to "that guy" who thinks he's the world's foremost authority.
I find that the more information I put along with my edits, the faster they have tended to be reverted. That is why I have registered, so that people will see a name instead of an IP. A lot of people assume, instantly, that an IP and no username is vandalism. Like you said, overzealous patrolling. The problem in my opinion, is that that is detrimental to the wiki as a whole. But I guess that's just part of a wiki.
I will be citing and edit summarizing and checking everything, but I'm still not very confident. I'll post here next time it happens to me, just to give an example.
