Hello, happy new year and welcome to the 2011 WikiCup! Your submissions' page can be found here and instructions of how to update the page can be found here and on the submissions' page itself. From the submissions' page, a bot will update the main scoresheet. Our rules have been very slightly updated from last year; the full rules can be found here. Please remember that you can only receive points for content on which you have done significant work in 2011; nominations of work from last year and "drive-by" nominations will not be awarded points. Signups are going to remain open through January, so if you know of anyone who would like to take part, please direct them to Wikipedia:WikiCup/2011 signups. According to websites I read supposedly the North Korean team was shamed for winning the world cup beacuse there was no responses of them after the world cup and they where not seen after. Later it was proven that they left the world cup to practice for the Asian games and where to busy practicing in north Korea and it was a lie that where shamed. I recommend you check with User:Rwxrwxrwx, the original reviewer, instead. Attacks

Hi - I just declined 1 of the 4 pages tagged as db-attack, but noticed that you deleted at least one of the others. The claims seem to be referenced and the articles have thus far stood the test of time and have been edited by many contributors. Since it seems like we should be consistant with all 4 I wanted to mention it to you to confirm if you do feel they qualify as attacks. Regards,  7  04:18, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

4. http://www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2002/just/1213n07.htm -- Does not mention the subject
5. http://www.nopedo.org/english/pages/actualite12.html -- Page not found
6. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_29-5-2002_pg4_3 -- Does not mention the subject

So I feel confident that Edward French needed to be deleted at least based on the content as it existed at the time. Maybe the other pages that I haven't reviewed are better referenced. My deletion of Edward French was based on it being a negative unsourced BLP (without taking a position as to whether the statements in the article were true). Mister Boffo

I was interested to see your article on this. I've got one strip from a newspaper somewhere round Everett, WA, that was used as packaging. Also in the packaging was a rather surreal sounding one called 'That's Jake' which I quite liked. Neither have been published over here - American cartoons don't come here much with the obvious exceptions of 'Hägar the Horrible' and 'Garfield', both of which fit the Brit sense of humour well. ('Red Meat' has a cult following, but I've never seen it in newspapers.) 'That's Jake' doesn't seem to have an article..... Peridon (talk) 19:15, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

• "That's Jake" is one I'm not familiar with; I don't think it ran in any of the newspapers I ever read regularly. It seems to have ended its run a few years ago. I actually don't see "Mister Boffo" that much anymore even though it is available on newspaper comics sites such as the Houston Chronicle's. Ironically, I was expecting to hear something about the Mister Boffo article I wrote today, but I expected it to be an AfD based on the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/National Standard Finance. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 02:36, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

The one I've got has someone wearing a Southern/Western big hat, boxers or check shorts and an inner tube greeting a conventionally dressed (same type hat and cowboy waistcoat on the chap) at the door. He is saying, "You're just in time. Here's your canteloupe and your fork - we'll be releasing the badger shortly.". In the foreground is a group of people dressed as the speaker, hanging upside down by one foot, and holding melons on forks. Underneath is a box with a barred front panel, and a pair of eyes are looking out. Underneath I've just found a caption reading "Why you should never accept an invitation to a party honoring a holiday you've never heard of." I enjoy the surreal... Request on RPP

Apologies for bothering--I just looked through my watchlist for an admin who is editing right now, and you're the first I saw. I'm trying to hold back a voluminous tide of vandalism on Irvington High School (Fremont, California). I've had a request at WP:RPP for about 2 hours w/o action, which I know is normally an acceptable time period, but I'm reverting a dozen edits at a time, from simple misinformation, to generic vandalism, to racism to BLP violations. If you're still on, could you kindly take a look at semi- it if you agree? 07:05, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

The User page had been deleted before I reviewed the Talk page and, to be honest, I didn't think (a) and (b) were relevant any more.

Not questioning your decision, Metropolitan. Explaining myself. This is why I speedy nominated:

WP:UP#DELETE - A user's contributions that consist solely of a lone edit to their user page should not normally be speedy deleted unless it consists solely of spam or other speedy deletable material. And WP:REMOVED - In general, it is usual to avoid substantially editing another's user and user talk pages other than where it is likely edits are expected and/or will be helpful...Unsuitable pages, media and images in userspace may also be nominated for deletion or (if appropriate) speedy deleted, but special care should be taken as the user may be expecting leeway and take it personally, and there are a few exceptions.

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! • One problem here is that when your username is User:Zane malik1, and you are writing an article about someone named Zane Malik, it looks like you are writing about yourself, which is a conflict of interest. I think we may not find out what he/she thinks about that MfD. The user appeared on Feb 12th, edited quite expertly (including RfD, AfD, and SPI) for six hours and hasn't been seen since - unless the user has reverted to IP editing or was a sock for some reason. WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. • I did indeed read it. The full content, just before it was tagged for speedy deletion, was the words "from sandbox". If the content copied from the DNB had been included in the article at that time, I wouldn't have considered the article for deletion. It wasn't until after I deleted that page that you moved the biographical content from your sandbox to the page. The exact chronology was: 03:37, 9 March 2011 (UTC): article created with only text being "from sandbox"; 03:40, 9 March 2011 (UTC): article deleted; 03:42, 9 March 2011 (UTC): article re-created with content. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 04:57, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
