Major copyright Violations[edit]

There are a whole bunch of potential copytright violations on the kobe bryant page--Duhon (UTC) April 30th

Just make sure, you're talking only about the images, which are quite bad, and not the article's text, right? Thanks. ×Meegs 06:41, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes the images --Duhon (UTC) 1 May 2006

Help needed[edit]

This is an AOL adress and it's doing chaos wright about now. Since there is no point in warning them, what to do? Special:Contributions/64.12.116.8 Death2 08:04, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That address has only made two contributions in the last few hours [1] [2], and neither looks like vandalism. What's the problem? ×Meegs 08:18, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's what were trying to find out, and it is more than two they did other Cradle of Filth albums adding labels which are posibly not involved with the band. Also there is some other stuff that I've found (oops): Image:Glen Benton.jpg, Image:Jeff Waters.jpg, Image:Max Cavalera.jpg, Image:Eric Peterson.jpg, Image:King Diamond.jpg, this one has photo credits???, Image:Bumblefoot.jpg, and where I found that Quorthon picture is on this fan site but they say their source is http://www.blackmark.net . I wouldn't recommend going to that site their server is too slow, it takes an hour to upload the first site (at least to me it did). Death2 08:26, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For this AOL editor, are all of their questionable contributions related to Spitfire Records? Maybe that label is, in fact, the distributor of that one CoF album, or its reissue (at least in some region of the world), as is suggested on their website. If you really don't think it belongs, remove it. Make sure to explain your reason in an edit summary and possibly in a quick note on the talk page. This is not what I would call chaos  ;)
For all the images, you can tag them yourself, if you want: either add {{subst:nsd}} to them or remove them from articles and use {{subst:orfud}}. If you don't want to, though, that's ok; I'll take care of it a little later. ×Meegs 08:49, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A landslide victory for The JPS (aka RFA thanks)[edit]

Hey, Meegs/Archive 4, thank you so much for your vote and comments in my RfA, which passed with an overwhelming consensus of 95/2/2. I was very surprised and flattered that the community has entrusted me with these lovely new toys. I ripped open the box and started playing with them as soon as I got them, and I've already had the pleasure of deleting random nonsense/attacks/copyvios tonight.
If I ever do anything wrong, or can help in some way, please feel free to drop me a line on my talk page, and I will do my best to correct my mistake, or whatever...
Now, to that bottle of wine waiting for me...

RFA stuff[edit]

Sorry to be such a bother, but I've added some stuff to my RFA for people to look at, and you don't have to if you wish, but I'd like to know how I handled those conflicts that I added. They're in the comments section. Again, I must state that I'm NOT trying to make you change your vote; I'd just like to know how the conflicts were handled, nothing more. Thanks, _-M o P-_ 03:13, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization[edit]

I think we can do without capital letters in the AFC templates. See Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation#AfC_Templates for my reasoning. :) - Mgm|(talk) 16:43, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I find your lack of faith... disturbing. [edit]

Indulge. :)

Dear Meegs/Archive 4,

Thanks for voting on my RFA! I appreciate your comments and constructive criticism, for every bit helps me become a better Wikipedian. I've started working on the things you brought up, and I hope that next time, things run better; who knows, maybe one day we'll be basking on the shore of Admintopia together. Thanks and cheers, _-M o P-_ 22:01, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Butt-head CfR[edit]

Thanks. I think it is spelled with a lowercase "h," though MTV spells it "Butt-Head" on their site, so that's probably the correct spelling. tregoweth 04:03, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

copyright issue[edit]

Hi Meegs - Thanks for your response to my question to Shyam regarding the copyright status of File:Commuters Reading Newspapers.jpg. I just realized the problem. It turns out that file name represents a flawed upload attempt; I uploaded the same image again with a new file name and the correct copyright information, and failed to delete the old file name. The correct image is (Image:NYC subway riders with their newspapers.jpg), which does have all the correct copyright information. My mistake. Thanks again for helping to clear it up. Orphan bot[edit]

Hello again. I've inserted the template nsd into pictures (copyrighted) I uploaded and removed them from the articles. But Orphan bot is still notifying me? Should I list them all on my talk page so he can skip the notification, or will you delete them and, problem solved. Stupid little bot! <-- this is a joke! Death2 22:56, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The stupid little bot is a joke, not the images! Death2 22:56, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Since they've been in articles for a while, we can not delete them for seven days. You could list the image names on your talk page, but if there weren't that many of them, it's probably easier to just ignore the messages as they come. It will be over in a day or two. Also, no one will mind if you delete the automated messages without archiving. ×Meegs 07:05, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Orphan droped another one, heh. Death2 19:41, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have listed them all at the end of my talk page. There is a bunch of them, hm. Also if you have time please take a look at this image it may need additional fair use info. I didn't upload it. It is used in article Dimebag Darrell, he is not among us anymore so the picture qualifies as fair use with no free alternative. Bye! Death2 20:08, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The image of Diamond Darrell doesn't have any info about its source, and because of that we can't authenticate it as a Wikipedia:publicity photo. Assuming it's not, its fair use rationale is not that strong, and its presence in the article will certainly discourage the addition of free images, which will be harder and harder to come by as the time since his death increases. I'm not going to do anything about it now, though. ×Meegs 20:25, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just did a quick search; this site has a bunch of great pics of Dimebag by three different photographers, and provides a URL for each of them. If you want to do something truly great, see if you can convince one of them to release a photo under the Creative Commons ShareAlike license. ×Meegs 20:45, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Price is Right[edit]

Thanks for pointing me to that licenseless image! -- Zanimum 17:03, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging[edit]

It looks as though you have uploaded dozens of images, like Image:June75-tommy-bolin.jpg, under the tag {{magazinecover}}. This tag presents a rough rationale for the fair use of the cover of a magazine in an article about the magazine. It does not apply to images within the magazine, nor the cover's use to illustrate the pictured person. Most of these images are not suitable for fair use in Wikipedia (see fair use counterexample 4).

You have also tagged a few images as promotional that do not fit our narrow definition of publicity photos. Please be rigorous deciding whether this tag is truly appropriate as well.

If you have any questions, you can ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. ×Meegs 21:43, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, but these photos are actually magazine covers. I have a huge collection of covers as I am in the print industry. Many of these covers are just the photos themselves without the magazine text. I have strictly adhered to the rules of Wikipedia image uploading. Thanks - Onlyslighted —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Onlyslighted (talkcontribs) 2006 May 6 22:03.
Remember that Wikipedia is, at heart, a free content encyclopedia and has tight restrictions on the use of copyrighted images. Adding copyrighted images to articles masks the fact that a free image is needed. This is particularly bad in the case of contemporary musicians, where there is ample apportunity to produce or procure free images for the purpose of identification. More to the point, though, as it says in {{magazinecover}}, magazine covers may only be used "to illustrate the publication of the issue of the magazine in question". Image:June75-tommy-bolin.jpg and many of your other images are simply being used as portraits. ×Meegs 22:42, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AFC archiving[edit]

If you're interested there is a pywikipedia framework script I made that can reduce the number of clicks somewhat. Do you know of anyone that knows a way to program a bot that can move pages? Fetofs Hello! 22:09, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, thanks for writing this! I don't exactly know how to use it, nor am I the one that's going to take responsibility for the archiving in the future, though. If you've tested this already, perhaps you could post a link and instructions for its use on Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation for all to see.
Am I right that you could turn this into a fully-automated bot if provided a way to move pages? That seems to be the critical problem for everyone we've asked. Higher up on this page at User_talk:Meegs#AfC, you can see a few of the responses I've gotten. There, Tawker suggests that Freakofnurture might have Python code that can do it, though I don't know if he every pursued it. I don't know anything about bots or python, and haven't programmed in a number of years, but would you ask to Freakofnurture? If you could complete a full bot, that would be absolutely outstanding. ×Meegs 17:13, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you're right. I could complete a full automated bot if I had the move code... I'll ask him. Fetofs Hello! 21:45, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cat[edit]

Hi, I don't know much about categorys. Article Rebel Meets Rebel needs a couple more. I think the band is over it was just a side project so you can add that one inactive bands. Also other than that the article is a stub ({stub} is not added), but nobody may not even notice that, the article isn't drawing too much attention (don't worry it's notable). Question about block of User:209.120.161.44[edit]

Why did you block this user? The user did not vandalize after the test4. JoshuaZ 14:23, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be with you in a moment ... ×Meegs 14:33, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My investigation began several minutes before my 10:16 block, which was the same minute that you posted this note to Anger22's AIV listing. I did not encounter your test4 edit until a couple minutes later when I got around to leaving my test5. Our conflict, as you can see, is purely temporal. The reason I blocked, rather than giving a test4, was because 7 of their 8 edits during the hour were clear vandalism, during which time they received 5 warnings, including two block-mentioning test3-equivalents. Let me know if you want to discuss this further. ×Meegs 15:08, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

inactive musical groups[edit]

Yeah, I'd kill it. It leads to a principle where we do "Retired baseball players" and "Decommissioned battleships." We don't do living and dead people, so we should do living and dead bands.--Mike Selinker 18:35, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there[edit]

Hi once again, well its seems that user Siddiqui has once again strated his Vandalism, he is keep reverting some time very neutral editing without any explainations, his general attitude his that what ever he writes is always true. Secondly is complaining again and again user Yahah01 and posting that I have something to do with him, well you can check your self but I think he should stop doing these things other wise I will revert all of his edits without explaing. regards phippi46 23:27, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Phippi. Really, the best thing I can suggest is that edit some different articles for while. You are still relatively new to Wikipedia, and I think it would be good for you to not clash with Siddiqui over every edit. Also, as I've said before, do not call his edits vandalism. It's unfortunate that he doesn't always explain his reversions, but they are not vandalism, and labeling them as such will only hurt your ability to communicate with him. His sock puppet claims are likewise inappropriate. By the way, even if you were User:Yahya01 — and I'm not suggesting that you are — there would not seem to be any violations of WP:SOCK, such as using two accounts to circumvent a block or representing yourself as multiple people in discussions or votes (Yahya's time on Wikipedia did not overlap yours).
Unfortunately, I do not have the time to get involved with the specific issues of this conflict, but I hope you will take my advice and avoid Siddiqui for a while. If not, I suggest you use on of the mechanisms listed in Wikipedia:Resolving disputes, such as informal mediation. Regards. ×Meegs 16:29, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar[edit]

The Original Barnstar
I hearby award Meegs this Original Barnstar for his work in tagging copyvios. Great job! --Fang Aili 說嗎? 18:04, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About Image:C437242a.jpg...[edit]

Why did you list it as not having a source? The original source was there and the image was tagged correctly, but you said it had no source. Was this a mistake or something? --ApolloBoy 03:00, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Because the msn source is not adequate to identify the image as a publicity photo. In fact, that source tells us nothing about the ownership or copyright status of the photo. ×Meegs 04:41, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But shouldn't it be pretty obvious that the image is promotional just from looking at it? --ApolloBoy 21:57, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Why, because it is high quality? It could be an original photo from a commercial web site like msn, or a magazine, or it could even have been taken by a a skilled amateur photographer. Whether it is a publicity photo or not is not so important, anyway, because in either case it is not free content, and not compatible with WP's goal of creating a free encyclopedia. We only allow copyrighted images when they are themselves the topic of an article or when there is no possibility of acquiring a free image taking its place. A contemporary car model, with hundreds of thousands of instances on the road, in public, is a ready target for free photographs. ×Meegs 18:08, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RFA[edit]

Canon law articles[edit]

Meegs, please let me finish this work before you switch it all around. I just completed a major edit that took me 10 minutes to write because of an editing conflict caused by your revert. This is going to take me a couple of hours. If you hate it by tonight, could you please do whatever to it then. Thank you. --Vaquero100 19:01, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, but please do not leave voids in articles. The encyclopedia is live. ×Meegs 19:08, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Video Game Screenshots as Fair Use[edit]

So, if I use a screenshot for a videogame console to promote it, then it's fair use? CubsFan2006 23:38, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, unlike Reggie Bush, there is no free alternative to a screenshot of Super Mario Brothers. You can use a small number of screenshots (preferably one), provided they are used in an article about the game. It does not matter whether the image promotes the game (in fact we try not to promote anything here on Wikipedia); what matters is that the image is critical to the written commentary about the game. ×Meegs 23:58, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Live in Helsinki[edit]

I cropped the image from the front cover of the album because four other members were also on the cover, and the article only pertains to Adrian Smith.

Thanks.

Onlyslighted

As we've discussed with magazine covers, album covers can only be used under fair use as a part of critical commentary about that album. Here it is used solely as a portrait. See WP:FU#Counterexamples #1. ×Meegs 02:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB[edit]

Dear Meegs,

I went to check something on the AWB and discoved that my name was removed from the approved user list. I am having some difficulty understanding this as I followed every instruction that you gave me and went back and fixed all the errors I had created. I took you suggestions about keeping the root Canon law article. I put in a lot of hours on this project which I believe will make possible for WP a really excellent article on Catholic Canon law.

I appreciated the corrections that you sent me and said I would use talk pages in advance in the future. That I would create an article before linking to it. I learned that a disambiguation term should be hidden in an article. I am sure that you got tired of correcting me. But, I actually learned a lot.

Anyway, I would hope that we could at least talk about this.

Thanks, Vaquero100

I did not remove you from the AWB list, and looking through the last week of edits, it appears that neither did anyone else. In fact, since Prodego added you yesterday, you are now on the list twice. ×Meegs 20:25, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AN/I discussion[edit]

There is a discussion going on over at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#User:moe.RON where a user is blaming me for unjust classification of some images. I have pointed out that it was you, not I, who did this. I would appreicate any insight you can give into this discussion as well as to User:Padgett22. Thank you! --MOE.RON talk | done | doing 04:54, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Moeron. Thanks for notifying me of the ANI topic (now archived here), and apologies for not being accessible for the past week. As others have pointed-out, you did the right thing re-removing the images from articles. An important issue that was not addressed in the ANI discussion is that even if the image were a magazine cover, it only qualifies for fair use as a part of commentary on the magazine, not when simply used as a portrait for the person on the cover. I've discussed this before with User:Onlyslighted, who is almost certainly the same person as User:Padgett22. Thanks again. ×Meegs 05:59, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response! I would just like to mention that User:Padgett22 has reinstated those pictures at Janick Gers and Trevor Horn. Perhaps you should leave a comment for the user about your reasoning from above. Thanks! --MOE.RON talk | done | doing 03:36, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. ×Meegs 08:16, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA Thank You![edit]

Thanks Meegs,

I am honored by your support in my recent successful request for adminship. As an administrator, I am your servant, ready to help however I can. (In your case, since you've had the tools longer than I, my best use might be menial labor!) My talk page is always open; should you need anything, or should you see me making a mistake -- probably a common occurrence -- please do let me know. I will depend on the good sense of the community to keep me from making a complete fool of myself! :) In gratitude, Xoloz 16:40, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS. While I'm a Cubs fan myself (and I can't tell you how miserable the last few years, with two curses younger than ours broken, and... the great collapse... of which I cannot speak...), I must say that Fenway is the best house in baseball (yep, even better than Wrigley), so I'm happy to see its beauty at the top of your userpage. :)

WP:AfC again[edit]

Hi. I programmed and tested the script for archiving WP:AfC following your specifications. It is ready to go. However, a short look at the page leads me to wonder whether there is any established editor watching that page and creating articles. In fact, an anon asked the same question on the talk page yesterday.

So, what do you want me to do? If you say so, I can activate the script immediately, but that doesn't seem a good idea if the page is basically dead. Just to confirm: everybody on Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Today should be archived, even the proposed articles that nobody has looked into yet? -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 11:48, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jitse. Sorry for the long delay. I share your concerns about AfC, and have been quite pessimistic about its future recently. Interest in the page has been steadily declining since it was launched at the end of last year, but there are a handful of good editors that remain involved, and User:MacGyverMagic has just advertised on the mailing list for more volunteers. I think regular archiving will help too.
I see that you ran the script yesterday, and it looks like it worked perfectly. Your are correct: the entire page should be moved, including the submissions that have not yet been inspected. If it isn't any trouble, please do begin running the script daily. Thank you, thank you. ×Meegs 05:30, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion Please[edit]

What is your opinion on using images from www.flickr.com on Wikipedia?MP123 03:13, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the images on the site are released under compatible Creative Commons licenses — ones that allow commercial use and derivative works — and can be used on WP, provided that they are properly tagged and give all required attribution. Many other images, like this one, that you uploaded as Image:Cameron Maybin.jpg, state that all rights are reserved. ×Meegs 06:35, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AFC[edit]

I hang my head in shame for causing such a delay, but I just sent a message to the mailing list in the hope of recruiting some vandal hunters and RC patrollers to tend to AFC and avoid blankings going unnoticed and crap like that. I hope this will bring in some new blood and get more things done. :) - Mgm|(talk) 07:37, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
