Unfortunately, fair use cannot be claimed for images solely on user pages. I've tagged the image Image:Lego-sannse.png that you uploaded as having unknown copyright status. Norwegian Defense Web Page information

In reference to your comment on my talk page: I have tried to find a tag which fits, but there isn't one and I don't know how to make one. I have emailed the administrators of www.mil.no and the reply was that all information on the page could be used as long as the source was mentioned. It wasn't too clear if this also applied to pictures, but pictures are information in my view. mil.no carries no copyright tags/claims. Wikipedia is intended for non-profit, educational use. I therefore do not see wikipedia as being in violation here. I only think it might be a problem if the information was misused.

This issue is probably also valid for all info/pictures from any Norwegian government web page. I am not sure about Norwegian copyright rules in general, but they are most likely the same as any other Western European country. I would like a special tag for Norwegian government/defense force pictures, but as I said I am not sure about how to make it or how to formulate the correct legal languate. If someone wants to check this stuff with odin.no or mil.no and then make a tag I would be very happy. Inge 16:59, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. I did some more research and came up with a brief paper categorizing a number of countries by copyright law with regard to government works. It lists Norway as a country where there are not copyrights on government works.

The Commons states that "Photos of people may not be published without their consent unless either ... the image illustrates a current event of interest the general public." That may be a mistake--I don't see why past events of interest to the public would be excluded. A portion of Norwegian copyright law has been translated into English, available in HTML or PDF format. Also, the U.S. Library of Congress seems to have a good Norwegian Law portal set up as well.

I don't speak Norwegian, and I'm completely unfamiliar with their laws, but if you'd like to create a template for works of the Norwegian Government, those pages would be a good place to start. I'm sure there are people at [Wikipedia talk:Copyrights] who'd be willing to help you furthur.

If you have received permission from the site to license the work under the GFDL, take a look at Wikipedia:Successful requests for permission. I will tag the image as public domain as a work of the Norwegian Government for now, since they said it would be ok with attribution and this is a non-profit, educational use. If you have any furthur comments or questions, be sure to let me know!

Hi! Thanks for your note on my talk page. I uploaded the image (and a second image, actually) some time ago, and was even less familiar at that time than I am now regarding image copyright and fair use. I'm afraid, even after reading the fair use summary I'm not much clearer. The no-for-profit part I think I'm pretty safe on, but the setting up in competition bit may be a little muddier. The page I took it from was essentially one with information on the town of Leixlip.

As far as I remember, I lifted the image from this website: http://www.kildare.ie/leixlip/places-of-interest/index.asp , which is the offical local government page.

Now, there's the situation. I hope you can help determine whether the images can be used legitimately, or should be removed?

Thanks for taking the time to try and learn about copyright and fair use. The whole copyright situation is really a mess (at least in the U.S.) and there is a lot of ambiguity. This particular image falls under fair use, because the source website has a notice stating that the images may be used for non-commercial purposes. Hi Powers, I appreciated the note. If this concomitance means anything I'm sure it is that we make fine Wikipedians, being keepers of the peace and all. Really though, I came across the article from CollegeHumor, and considering some of the college-aged people I know... well, suffice to say that I expected worse. Thanks for your quick reply. I don't believe that the spoken articles should be removed because they are outdated, since they probably won't be recorded very often. I'd prefer to see an outdated recording that not to know there was one at all. Perhaps this would be a good topic of discussion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia? As for the spoken box itself, I'm not sure what it looked like at the time, but it looks fine to me where it is now. Images need both source information so that the legality of its use on Wikipedia can be verified. The copyright tag makes it easier to categorize pages and saves people time (so they don't have to look up the copyright status themselves every time). The copyright tag is also important when users upload images they have not released anywhere else, because they need to specify the licensing information. The copyright notice at the web page you retrieved the image from (http://today.reuters.com/HelpAndInfo/Copyright.aspx) states that "Republication or redistribution of Reuters content, including by framing or similar means, is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of Reuters."

The only way we could use it on Wikipedia is if you receive written permission from Reuters, or you claim it as fair use. If you do decide to claim it as a fair use image, tag it with {{Fairusein|ARTICLENAME}} and provide a fair use rationale similar to the one below:

The image linked here is claimed to be used under fair use as:
# Its inclusion adds significantly to the article because it shows the article's subject
# The photo is used non-commercially, for informational purposes only
# It is a historically significant photo

Be sure to customize the rationale for this particular image. Also, please note that this image probably wouldn't qualify as fair use for the Park Place article, which is the only place that it is currently located. I wonder if Mr. Dallaway can include a wikilink in the file info? (meaning, I don't know if it's possible to do.. I would suppose so, though)

The ironic thing is that I only know about RP b/c I'm a French major and the big French-English dictionary I use has an infobox on it as a "cultural tip."

The closest thing we Americans have to it would be called Network standard (scroll down to Ryan's post). Brits would all know what RP is, and quite possibly anyone living in a former British colony/commonwealth. I think you're right that many other Americans wouldn't. Thanks for the complement, I had been looking at a number of little apps (mac osx) focusing around expanding the clipboard and/or copy paste functionality. None of them really seemed to work well because they had the assumption i would be copying things a lot that might change when what I really needed was a "palette" of canned messages. So, I went low tech and just made a folder with text clippings. If you aren't on mac, I don't know if windows or linux has them, I will give a brief explanation. If you select some text and drag it to your desktop it creates a small file, which when you drag it to a text area in any app is interpreted as pasting that text in at that point.

So, I just have that little folder sitting beside the browser with the tags with dates etc filled in, I only use it for no license and no source, and the associated edit descriptions; for the rest i manually type them in. - cohesion★talk 07:53, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

I reverted your edit to Template:Spoken Wikipedia because the heading text was colliding with the "Please read Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales's personal appeal" notice that only non-logged in users see. I'm not sure how you would edit the positioning so that it appears lower (and therefore below the notice) only for non-logged in users, but if you can figure it out, please go ahead and do it. Image Autotagger

I haven't been doing much tagging, actually. I've got a bot that does three things: it removes any image with no source or copyright information from articles, it notifies users if they haven't been notified, and it adds a datestamp to any nosource or no-copyright tag without one, which may be what you're seeing. I've been playing with the idea of creating a script to automatically tag images, but I haven't had time. --Carnildo 23:12, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
