Marathi Language Dwindling Nos[edit]

  • "considering the dwindling number of students opting for Marathi-medium schools."
    • I belive "increase in preference for english medium schools" would be a better sentence. Because although in middle class preference for English medium schools is increasing ,it will not affect in absolute percentage terms because of most of rural and poor population is much dependant on Govt. run Marathi Medium schools only;and their population is ever increasing

Unspecified source for Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 15:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as fair use or article name, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 15:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Melissa Theuriau.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Yamla 15:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IPM Page - Thanks for your inputs![edit]

Hi Max, actually, I agree with you that I shoudl use the word 'claim'. I will. :) With regard to the controversy section, I was simply following precedent, in that a lot of institutions and companies on WIkipedia have Criticism as their topics on similar issues. I aree with the usage issue, and would be happy to consider a third alternative. You see controversy as a word has an interesting nuance, that may not accurately describe the content of the section. With reference to the section being well-researched, It lists a number of issues against the institute. I have described why that section should be rewritten on Talk:The_Indian_Institute_of_Planning_and_Management#Controversies - comprehensive re-write. Currently, that section constitutes an attack on the institute, and cites blogs and a magazine that does not qualify as a vverifiable source.I have mentioned the issues with the sources here [of JAMMAG quotes]. Do let me know your opinion, ad perhaps you could help me with a rewrite after you have reviewed this material? Many thanks, --Iipmstudent9 13:03, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sunita Williams[edit]

Perhaps u didnt eye on the menu This article is in Wikiproject India. May i know from you why it is belongs to Indian Project. Is there any one who give me the reason. i am waiting for the answer. After 24 hours i will upload the Hindi name. Guddu 07:05, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Query regarding names in other languages[edit]

Hello Bhadani,

I have been having a discussion with a fellow editor over here and we seem to disagree about whether or not to put Sunita Williams' name in Hindi on her page. I have been arguing against putting her Hindi name, because Williams is a citizen-by-birth of the USA (please see the aforementioned talk page for more details). Her Indian link is through her father who was an Indian immigrant. Just for the sake of uniformity and for future reference, I would like to know if it is appropriate to include names in the native tongue of people who are the second (or generally, nth) generation offprings of immigrants.

I would appreciate your opinion on this. Is there any WP rule/guideline that can throw more light on the issue? I read this and this, but couldn't find a lot of relevant information.

Thanks, Max 11:56, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient Lands[edit]

Well, what is problematic is using an expression like "ancient Pakistan," which indeed would imply that Pakistan has been around since ancient times. However, since Pakistan is a modern-day state, the expression "ancient lands of Pakistan" is equivalent to "ancient lands of modern-day Pakistan." So using the latter expression makes one redundancy. Saying "ancient lands of what is now modern-day Pakistan" is the double redundancy, since you clearly don't need "what is now" when you say "modern-day." Fowler&fowler«Talk» 08:46, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed it to "ancient lands of modern-day Pakistan." Thanks for your feedback. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 10:44, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Konkani Language Article[edit]

I have placed a rewrite-section tag on the Konkani v/s Marathi section. Kindly view my comments in the discussion page and add your opinion.

PS: we seem to think alike. I have been working on a longer and more detailed article for the Konkani page where I intended to put a section on Konkani Revival and Shenoi Goembab. I also intended to put detaield information abotu SN Katre's (and other's) work , and detaisl about the various scrit debates. Can I be sure you are not reading my mind or something???

OK just joking.

I will put up more contents in a couple of days. Maybe a separate history of Konkani page too. Will let you know and look forward to your feedback. --Deepak D'Souza 10:04, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. I would request u to verify the official language status once again. No hard feelings from my end. :) Maharashtraexpress 05:07, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have placed a draft of the improved Konkani article on my userpage. I have not yet seperated the History section. It needs more work , such as adding links and refs ,also I have to carry over the changes done by others. I have yet to work out the Konkani v/s Marathi section. But I feel it would be better if you do it yourself. Just dont spend too many lines on it. All I request is that in the quest for neutrality, facts should not be sidelined.

Your suggestions /criticism will be appreciated

--Deepak D'Souza 12:35, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. You are right about the problems section. Most of it is my own observations, and I agree it may be difficult to find citations for all of them. Since you are busy I will do the Marathi Konkani section myself, problem being it may be really difficult for me to maintain NPOV . --Deepak D'Souza 04:35, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much.It has taken a week of stolen office time to do the work. Hope more people will contribute more info.

I am not very happy about the "It has been claimed by some quarters that..." Because some quarters is too neutral, too ambiguous. Nontheless, I wont bother to change it. You can't make everyone happy everytime, can you!

Apart from that I appreciate the changes you have made.--Deepak D'Souza 04:46, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding IIPM[edit]

Wiki Policy[edit]

Please see this 1 IP198 15:02, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the positive reply. Wikipedia is, and should remain politically correct. In my opinion the Mumbai train bombings was a terrorist attack, but i also think what America is doing in Afghanistan and Iraq is terrorism. Others, especially for the latter, will disagree, so it best to remain neutral and just avoid the term. IP198 21:25, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE:About the terrorism template[edit]

If you are going to call the template Militant organizations in India, how is linking it to Terrorism in India fair? Terrorist commit terrorism, not militants. It seems that you are trying to avoid the policy by putting the link in. How would it seeem if i created an article about "freedon struggle in India", and liniked it to the template? The best solution would be to leave the template without a link, and let people come to their own conclusion on whether the groups are Terrorist, Militants, or Freedom Fighters. I wont revert your edit, but if your position does not change i will ask the WP:VP if the link is appropriate.

btw for the war on terror template i have removed it from articles such as this.2 However their are to many instances for one person to remove all references to terrorism or terrorist. IP198 17:42, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I posted a question at the village pump 3. I dont know how long it takes for a respone, but hopefully they can clarify the policy. i will respect any decision regarding the template that make. IP198 20:55, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Their still has been no response at the Village Pump, so i thought i would suggest a new idea. How about creating a new template called Militant Organizations in Kashmir, and link it to this Category:History of Jammu and Kashmir4 This category has a number of useful articles including Terrorism in Kashmir, Kashmir region, and Kashmir conflict. I think this would be a better link fo readers as they would get more information. If this is fine with you, would you want me remove the post from the village pump? IP198 19:32, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok i removed the question from the Village Pump. I have another idea, but if this not acceptable then i will accept your temporary solution. Lets create the seperate template for Kashmir and link it to three differnt articles. For example the word Kashmir can link to Kashmir region, the word militant can link to Terrorism in Kashmir, and the word organization can link to either Kashmir conflict or Kashmir Freedom Movement. this will provide more information about Kashmir, and why their is conflict their. The problem with the current template is that their almost no links for any of the Northeastern gropus, the Khalisthan movement has ended, and it lumps all of these groups together. IP198 16:54, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah that sounds good like a good idea. I understand your concerns regarding the template, so i will take them into account when i create one in my user area. However i will be busy until Wednesday. In the mean time i will change the title to Organizations listed as terrorist groups by India(i am assuming you meant by instead of in). Regarding your question, the only reason i was against the current template was that it only gave an article on Terrorism, without taking account other sides. IP198 20:59, 20 April 2007 (UTC

Take a look at this rough draft User:IP198\Kashmir Template. I it modeled after a template created by User:Rama's Arrow. IP198 19:41, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I completely understand what you mean as you say that no academy makes the English language, although I tend to interperet the policy on how the country classifies a city's name in a certain language depending on if the country uses the language as an official language. Because of the British influence on India, the country uses English as an official language. However, if a country such as Ukraine classifies the name of Kiev in English to be Kyiv, I prefer to use the English vernacular, considering the fact that English has no domestic merit in the Ukranian government. In fact, I have been arguing with a sockpuppet crusader as to why Kiev should stay where it is. Reginmund 21:29, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Symbiosis logo.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Symbiosis logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 09:42, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of word Diwali and Kandil -deletion ![edit]

I m puzzled , as to what may be the reasons that a observation reflecting nominally accepted / assumed truth about Diwali and kandil have been deleted - diwali is not a direct Hindi word , in fact the word Diwa does not exist in Hindi at all but only in Marathi and Maharashtri prakrit

it also the Fact that devnagari 'La' does not exists in Hindi and is generally misread/interpreted as devnagari 'la' and which is what has happned in the word Diwali where word Diwa+ALi has become Diwali

the arguments to deletion seems weaker as it is not a original research but a known fact (atleast in Maharashtra )that diwali stands for Diwa+ALi a ordinary grammer in Prakrit called "sandhi"

and Kandil is also puerly marathi(and to some extent in North karnataka) word and is as per its tradition ,which have been followed only in that part of india (North India did not have that tradition )and hence other Indians are likely to be ignorant of its significance, which has been mostly being passed on by mouth to ears over the generations and which is what I have put

the point is there is probably no source required for somthing as simple ,factual and fundamental as this and there is probably no direct source availble for me to send you in very exact lines

please do guide me as to how I can make you satisfied about my comments and not be disppointed with wikipedia reflecting untruth or not encouraging first information reports(there has to be always the 1st time for everything and if that 1st time reflects the first hand truth then Truth and only Truth should be given the precedence ) one can not ignore and shut one self to other information sources just because they appear to be first information resources ,reports (FIRs) and not based on some citations or some already discovered and confirmed source -if that be the case/rule followed by every publisher then there will never be anything written at all -a catch 22 situation —Preceding unsigned comment added by Profinder (talkcontribs) 03:04, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To max[edit]

Thanks max , appreciate your prompt response and sorry abt my delayed reply

I m sorry but you seem to have missed few points in reading my original text , where I have never doubted the true origin in Sanskrit as Deepawali and clearly mentioned the same

the word diwali is secondary "Apabrhansha"of deepawali Sanskrit -> Maharashtri (Prakrit) -> Marathi ->Hindi/marathi i.e. Deep+ Awali -> Diwa + Awali -> Diwa+ALi -> Diwa+Ali

the individual break up and history of respective words in Hindi/Marathi of is as follows

Sanskrit -> Deep ->Marathi -> Diva/Diwa |

               |--->    Hindi -> Diya

Sanskrit -> Awali ->Marathi -> ALi / Ali |

               |-----> Hindi -> XXX (there is no apabhranmsha in Hindi)

Hope it explains

Also might or numbers on any front doesn’t make anybody correct but only truth does

both DiwaALi and Diwali are valid in Marathi while only Diwali is valid in Hindi as La is missing

not to mention that the word Deepawali it self can be used without any restraint in both Hindi and Marathi

I can assure you that word Diwali is as much sandhi as the word deepawali "sandhi in prakrit and in marathi" where Awali became -> ALi and Deep became Diwa

the grammar of Prakrit and Sanskrit are almost the same , i,e. with and only with sandhi can you form such words and it is a very very common knowledge

however , if you still have doubts you can open the content debate

rest assured that no Hindi encyclopedia which is older than 100 years will have Diwa as the original hindi word and no where the word Diwali will be visible in Very Old Hindi literature while that word is scattered everywhere in Maharashtri (Prakrit) and Marathi literature in both the formats

the origin of Hindi it self has seen the transformation from urdu/arabi/farsi to Sanskrit during last 70 years -mass translations / acceptance were carried out by translating the works of popular prakrit / Marathi vocabulary into Hindi

this reorientation/sanskritization (in EARLY AND LATE 50S) of Hindi to coincide with Sanskrit and Marathi has been happening for ages , and marathi being the best source of original Sanskrit vocabulary+ indigenous and inherited vocabulary is freely used and continue to be used even today

BTW i have a very good study of Hindi , Marathi and Sanskrit background so no numbers or might can campaigning against the truth as it is a known history in India of what I have stated also , I m a NI settled in Maharashtra who doesn’t believe in any religion and is trying to be really a free thinker (unlearning the BIAS and being as born to be)and proponent of TRUTH so that leaves any prejudiced NIs complaining against me as a outsider or bla bla.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Profinder (talkcontribs) 09:51, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your Message on PoV[edit]

Hi Max, I'd like to bring forth a set of open questions, in all my previous contributions to Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar and Xpressions, I have ensured that all the "supposed PoVs" are backed by citations, which if you notice, most of the entries in Business Schools in India are yet to suffice, so one can simply not pick up any entry and bash it up. Entries are replete with phrases like "Best in India", "Topmost", "Toughest", are they not PoVs, even if they are backed by citations. The same notification has to be provided to all such entities which do not adhere to such rules. The Law is for everyone and It's sad to see one having put a watch on a single entry to purposefully denigrate it's existence. I'd request you to visit some of the notable entries in the category mentioned above and find out if they abide by the wikipedia guidelines, irrespective of their social stature. If Stanford university wishes to call itself as a "Highly Selective" and "Well Regarded" entity, without any wikipedia citation, irrespective of what the whole world thinks of it, would you choose to disagree, with it's PoV or would that not count as a "PoV" at all ? When I mention an adjective like "Premier" or "Biggest" , I tend to notify a reader about the available reference about the enitity, hence, it can't simply be termed as my personal view. I provide tons of media citations to support my sentences. You have definitely been doing a great job by showcasing wikipedia as a neutral venue, but at the sametime, I must tell you that Print media acts as an evidence for all such claims, otherwise, why would we have "Citations" in the context of wikipedia? If PoVs have to be suppressed, then wikipedia can very well do without the Citation Requirements. And yes, your title "Warnings" on my talk page was not in good taste, looks like a "War Cry", What did you mean by "Commentary" or "Personal Analysis"? Please learn to express yourself in a subtle manner, first. Wikipedia is a symbol of Free Expression and I don't think, other than Contextual Monitoring, exercise of Pseudo-Control would be in keeping with the objective of this platform. Thank You.

Reply to your note[edit]

Hi Max, your last post was in a much better tone. I definitely appreciate your reasoning and to a large extent, I was trying to hint at the same although I might have sounded a bit critical. To answer the usage of the so called peacock terms and your statement A point to note is that words like "best", "biggest", "premier" are called peacock words. If such words are used by multiple, third-party, reliable sources, you should attribute them to the sources they came from, instead of synthesizing them from one's own conclusions., I must tell you that, in one of my previous edits to one such instance in the entry Xpressions, where I had used the statement "Biggest b-school fest of the east", I had provided a reference to what Financial Express, a prominent business paper in India, had to say about the fest. It's an altogether different story that it was removed without due deliberation. As I have said before, I have always tried to substantiate the claims through a transparent channel, print/online media in this case, without making these read as blatant forms of ostentation. But, at the same time, I do agree that, constant refinement is a pre-requisite towards a neutral and un-biased form of expression, in keeping with the 5 pillars of Wikipedia.

Thank you for this informative post. Do well.

Zaid Hamid[edit]

Thanks for your message. Didn't mean to suggest you were doing original research, just that this article has been through this before where the reader is invited to criticize simply because his (admittedly provocative) views are listed under criticism. Your modification is fair, although it would be better if the new Political views section also contained more general information, rather than solely concentrating on the extreme. He must have views on other, less controversial, political topics as well?

Other than that, I have neutralised things. Scare quotes, words like 'vitriolic' and the emphasis on 'repeatedly' is not neutral. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 10:43, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

re: protection request[edit]

Hi -

I looked at the IPs who have been removing that block of content, and it appears the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has itself a sockpuppet. (Who knew?) I'd lay money it's the same guy editing from home, work, _and_ mobile.

Just in case it's not the same guy, maybe one guy plus one of his buddies, I semi'd the page for one month. I hate to do that for a running TV show but at least we'll see if he's determined enough to create an account and get identified. Thanks. :-) KrakatoaKatie 17:55, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
