Hello, and thanks for the suggestion! I google'd her name and she appears in American Men & Women of Science - Volume 5 - Page 246 and clearly has a strong publication record, so I think she should be doable in terms of material. It sounds like you would be well-skilled to write the part most often missing from scientist bios -- a statement summarizing her work and its significance. I could work on the more biographic aspects. That said, I'm going to be very busy over the Christmas holidays and may not have much time for the next couple of weeks. You claimed during your check (tick) of the DYK nom that both parts of the hook were "supported and directly cited". We've since had to pull this hook from the main page after a further review was conducted at WP:ERRORS.   • @Coffee: Here are the sources I confirmed:
  • Part 1 - "grown only in and around Devanahalli" -- "Devanahalli chakkota is unique to the region and is cultivated in surrounding villages too." also "The number of farmers cultivating the fruit is estimated to be less than 100."[1] Also: "Devanahalli Pomello is particularly grown in 13 villages in Devan ahalli taluk."[2]
  • Part 2 - "said to be the largest citrus fruit in the world" -- "Pomello or Chakkota, is the largest sized citrus fruit"[2]
  • @Coffee: Ah, so the issue then is not that the sources didn't exist, but rather that the statements should have been more accurately combined in something like this? ... that the Devanahalli Pomello, a variety of the largest citrus fruit in the world, is grown only in and around Devanahalli?   • Exactly, but as you see at the ERRORS page the other admins commenting there pretty much chalked an ALT hook like that up to "... that pomellos are pomellos?" (I would state that I think it's more like "... that Devanahalli Pomellos are Devanahalli pomellos?" but it's pretty much the same point). Perhaps we could have tried a hook like what you're saying here, but, with the overall sourcing in the article Gatoclass, Dweller, and The Rambling Man didn't think it should go back on the main page. — Coffee // have a cup // beans // 16:02, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

yes, GA just a little, half way to FA ores.wmflabs.org/scores/enwiki/wp10/710594564/. given your good work, should start with WP:DYK. i don't normally try the promotional channels here to get on mainpage, since there are gatekeepers to contend with, but we do need to accurately reflect the quality status of your work, even if there will be a backlog keeping up with you.     • well i would, "nothing to good" in a week is something to celebrate. more badges for your user page, overdue. i'll look at infoboxen. the backlog on GA may be up to 6 months, so when a reviewer volunteers, they will put a to do list on the talk page. it tends to be style issues though. The section "Impact" is seriously wrong. The real advantages of using a spectrometer is that it enables easier analysis of mixtures of chemicals. This requires measurements at more than one wavelength, which is possible, if a little time-consuming, with a colorimeter, such as the Lovibond comparator. Simple colorimeters had been in use for half a century before the DU-type onstruments was produced. There is a detailed description of old colorimeters in A. I. Vogel "Quantitative Inorganic Analysis", Second edition (1951), pp. 611-624 (note the old date). Colorimeters are still used today - see Vogel, 5th. edition, (1989), p. 638. An even simpler type of colorimetric analysis is used, for example, to check the quality of water in swimming pools: the colour of a sample treated with a specific reagent is compared to a the colours printed in the user-manual. "It enabled researchers to perform easier analysis of mixtures of chemicals by quickly taking measurements at more than one wavelength to produce an absorption spectrum describing the complete substance." Barbara Meneley

Hi, @Mary Mark Ockerbloom:, Although I can tap into some of the background thinking to an extent, I am having some difficulty relating to the vigor of the deletion input at the Barbara Meneley AfD. I have brought up the Horowitz academic editorial repeatedly. I have evenhandedly acknowledged that the editorial could possibly be construed as touching on Meneley somewhat briefly but I see no response whatsoever, other than repetition of the opinion that the sources are "all local". Maybe this is a systematic blind spot. (I am not going to repeat the comment yet again at AfD because I hope the closer will see that there has been no proper counterpoint.)

Interestingly, Horowitz explains in the editorial, "...I am relieved and happy that the editorial team of RACAR agreed with me that it is both impossible and undesirable to attempt to conduct a blind or double blind review process for artists' research appearing in the journal, since documentation for our works can so readily be found online on artist and gallery websites." I think Horowitz is saying something like, "Let people decide for themselves, based on the readily available documentation." Clearly, the deletion input either has not read or has not understood the editorial at all.

The latest AfD input takes umbrage to the "Exhibition catalogues" section. The concern being raised seems to be that the section is somewhat atypical as a header, and may be of undue prominence and is thus "promotional". In my opinion, this is utter amphigory, that is being used to sexily dress up a non-issue in brightly-coloured tiger stripes, making it seem muscular. The general strategy is to criticize things into a conceptual vaccuum of non-existence.

I think it would put closure to any wispy spider web tendrils of legitimacy regarding the "Exhibition catalogues" section if the sources were restyled by being less visually prominent, by attaching them to the relevant works. I plan to make this change to the content you added and I came here to let you know why. If you feel otherwise, I would offer the consolation that I have no objection to the present format myself, but would like the undress the Big Muscular Tiger. @FeatherPluma: I too find the discussion an odd one. I added the section because there seemed to be an assertion that she wasn't mentioned in group exhibitions -- therefore I listed some catalogs giving evidence of her presence in group exhibitions. I'm happy to add a note to that effect, and after that I'm happy to have you edit however you wish and seems fit ... Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 22:36, 19 March 2016 (UTC)
@Mary Mark Ockerbloom: Whatever you judge best. I am sure you will factor that in some ways "less is more", thus avoiding "promotionalism", a favourite knife of some AfD participants. On the other hand, if a particular exhibition catalogue has a curator's comment about a given work or about her work collectively, please do consider adding that to article. I think frankly that the problem is failure to read and analyse the article and references properly, so although I have put a lot of time into this, I suggest not pandering overmuch to the unappeasable. You really never can tell how an AfD will be closed, but in my opinion, either a "Keep" or a "No consensus" (which by practice defaults to a keep) might be the outcome here. If it's "Deletion" I am going to look at the closer's rationale very closely. FeatherPluma (talk) 23:01, 19 March 2016 (UTC)
@Mary Mark Ockerbloom: Closed, finally, as No consensus. That was the worst AfD I have ever dealt with, except for one a few years ago where a nutter wanted the article kept if grossly inflammatory and totally unsupportable content was retained, and by golly the nutter wanted it retained, or the article deleted as biased whitewashing lies if they didn't get their way. This one was just weird: gloomy, mind-boggling, sodden entrenchment. Not fun. Thanks for your input at various stages. Anyway, moving on, and thanks again. Dr Rosaly Lopes

Hello, I am a friend of Dr Lopes. I note you were the last to edit her Wikipedia entry and would like to co-operate with you on her entry update. The key issue to be addressed is that she has reverted to and prefers to be called by her maiden name, Rosaly Lopes, rather than Lopes-Gautier. What I suggest is that her primary entry is under Lopes, but with a link to the primary entry from Lopes-Gautier, who come to her from her work when known by that name. yes thanks, incorporating experts at editathons may be a way forward. i get worried that the basic articles will remain starts forever, because they are too tough (it's been 5 or 10 years with minimal progress). we need to find a way / process to improve quality of the basic high visibility articles. thanks for your \help in this. Hi, MMO. I did not want to bring this up over on the DYK template for Planned Parenthood. It is getting to be tedious for me over there, and I do not want to clutter up your fine suggestion.

I liked including Brooklyn because it is a quirky part of New York and a lot of people live in that area so they would be intrigued by seeing their area in a hook. Thank you for wikilinking birth control. So obvious now. D'oh!

Sanger, her sister, and colleague starting out distributing birth control and advice. Right off the bat.

There were arrested for the advice part, at least that is my takeaway from reading the article and as many of the references as I can that support the article.

I cannot find the point of reference that documents that it was for "obscene" even though we tried using that word in one of the many hooks (more than 10).

I am starting to feel like we are flogging this. With that said, I am very happy to see you trying to breath fresh air into it and get us out of a ditch, if we are in one. I am trying to step aside unless called upon.

The QPQ seems to be a non-issue now as this is only my 2nd nomination, although I have gone along on the ride for 5 DYKs, one of which was pulled from the queue at the witching hour for being negative about a living person.   • Hi MMO. Thanks again. Is it OK to put a comma after birth control as they did distribute birth control, information, and advice? I like the way you weaved Brooklyn in there. Making it more passive then I had previously. I think it would be more accurate than birth control information and advice.
On a side note, I have been helping a new editor Picomtn and you may be able to help them by direct editing as they are working on several articles about WW I and WW II chemists, and associated articles. I'd seen some of your great work for the residency at the CHF when I first started as WiR in May, but it was a time of serious information overload, so sorry I've only just got around to getting in touch! I got a nudge from John last night when he helped me out by adding the Wellcome Library to the Forward to Libraries list.
I've just been talking with the British Society for the History of Science about running some editathons to improve histsci content - would be lovely to do something collaborative, let me know if there's anything you're working on that we could get behind and help out with!   • Hello! @Zeromonk: Delighted to hear from you, I've been impressed by the gorgeous images from Wellcome on Commons. The next thing we are planning for CHF is a "Women in Science" event on Thursday, October 13, in part as a recognition of Ada Lovelace Day. Do you know if the Royal Society is planning around that again this year? Planning is also underway for a science edit-a-thon at WikiConference North America in San Diego, CA, likely to be on Sunday, October 9, 2016. I thought I'd better recheck

  • That was a tricky one, since he's involved in a lot of them. I found both an NPR page that may link to shows he's done, and a way to get a list of his shows from worldcat, so that it lists the ones where he is credited as an author. Hi, if you want something to run on a particular date, after it's approved by an uninvolved editor, you can move the template to the Special Occasions holding area and put it under that date. I don't understand why you want this hook to run before U.S. Election Day; why not on it? We already have another non-2016 election hook scheduled for that day as well. Why C and not B class?

  • @Dthomsen8: I'm not quite sure what's going on with that -- it currently shows as B-class when I view it. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
