I don't know how long the influence section has been there. In fact it's not only for directors, it's part of the 'Infobox person' template, so any kind of page about a person that has an 'infobox' (the box at the top right with biographical information) can have 'influences' and 'influenced' easily filled in. As with other areas of wikipedia, this information should be properly sourced.
