Two things:

  1. We don't need to have two pages that are completely identical. Please don't do this.
  2. Don't create new pages by copy-pasting an existing article to the new article. This applies to general page moves as well.

If you would like to improve the article Retrotransposon, then by all means do so, but please do it there and there only, not on a separate article (using a sandbox would be acceptable, though). If you would like the article name changed, then please follow the processes outlined at WP:RM.

Thank you. SkyWarrior 03:07, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicating articles[edit]

Hi, thanks for your edits on genetics topics. Unfortunately, it's a principle of Wikipedia that we can only have one article on a topic. It looks like your Short Interspersed Elements text duplicates exactly the same topic as a pre-existing article, Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs), so while I agree that that article has some problems the aim should certainly be to improve it.

Let me know how this sounds or if you disagree. Blythwood (talk) 16:05, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Blythwood, it sounds good to me! The pages were spelled differently so I didn't really realized there was already one when I created it. So thanks for removing it. In fact, checking further, it looks like there was already two pages for SINES: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_interspersed_nuclear_elements_(SINEs) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_Interspersed_Nuclear_Elements_(SINEs)... Also, I don't know if this is the proper way to answer you? Thanks for your help!

Oh goodness, I hadn't even seen that one. Yes, this is a mess. What I've done is propose for deletion also the Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) so we keep the senior article on this topic, Short Interspersed Nuclear Elements (SINEs) (which was put up in March last year). Sorry, I realise this is getting to be quite a mess. I've copied your text over to that article's talk page so it isn't lost. Blythwood (talk) 19:39, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think this is a good idea! The one you are deleting looks like the copy-paste of somebody's thesis or something like that!
OK, great! If you want me to move portions of your text over into the senior article let me know what you want me to do and I can do it, or feel free to make changes yourself. Sorry about this once again, I'm just trying to make sure there's one article per topic so nobody gets confused. Blythwood (talk) 17:45, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have a copy of my text as well so you can discard it. For sure this get confusing. There wasn't even any links directing to any of these articles! So I added a couple and when I have time I will go through the senior article and see if I can improve it. Thanks!

The article Short Interspersed Elements has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This apparently Duplicates the pre-existing Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) article that has existed for over a year. If there are problems with that article it should be improved, not duplicated confusingly.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
